Abstract Tumors and healthy tissues exhibit gene expression variability in many of the same pathways. We propose that these commonalities result from a performance trade-off between universal cellular phenotypes; each phenotype is defined by an orthogonal gene expression profile identified using unsupervised dimensionality reduction. Using two publicly available RNA-seq datasets (n=54 normal tissues; n=1504 cancer cell lines), we show that both healthy and cancerous cells occupy a trade-off between five canonical phenotypes: OxPhos, Warburg, Fibroblastic, Immune, and Growth. Fock and Goncharov conjectured that the indecomposable universally positive (i.e. atomic) elements of a cluster algebra should form a basis for the algebra. This was shown to be false by Lee, Li and Zelevinsky. However, we find that the theta bases of Gross, Hacking, Keel and Kontsevich do satisfy this conjecture for a slightly modified definition of universal positivity in which one replaces the positive atlas consisting of the clusters by an enlargement we call the scattering atlas. In particular, this uniquely characterizes the theta functions.

In this work, we address the problem of creating a 3D dynamic atlas of the vocal tract that captures the dynamics of the articulators in all three dimensions in order to create a global speaker model independent of speaker-specific characteristics. The core steps of the proposed method are the temporal alignment of the real-time MR images acquired in several sagittal planes and their combination with adaptive kernel regression. As a preprocessing step, a reference space was created to be used in order to remove anatomical information of the speakers and keep only the variability in speech prod

Constraints on dark matter from the first CMS and ATLAS SUSY searches are investigated. It is shown that within the minimal supergravity model, the early search for supersymmetry at the LHC has depleted a large portion of the signature space in dark matter direct detection experiments. In particular, the prospects for detecting signals of dark matter in the XENON and CDMS experiments are significantly affected in the low neutralino mass region. Here the relic density of dark matter typically arises from slepton coannihilations in the early universe. In contrast, it is found that the CMS and AT

There was one law for the heavens, where the gods dwelt for the most part, and another for the ordinary man. The modern scientist, and we can look back to Aristotle as being the first great natural scientist, commences his study of the universe by assuming that the laws of nature are universal. We do not need one law for the planetary motions, and another for walking along a road. In this spirit, cosmology, the scientific study of the universe, is develope
