Full text
Abstract:
The paper describes the use of Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) in the library of the Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule Zürich (ETH-Zürich). The author explains characteristics of a subject authority index, the NEBIS Subject Index (NSI), through which the UDC is implemented for indexing and searching. The ETH library has been using the UDC for the past twenty-five years and most users hardly ever noticed the classification. A query in today's NEBIS-OPAC (formerly called ETHICS) is based on a verbal search with descriptors in German, English and French, and corresponding related search-terms. A single UDC number, linked to these descriptors, connects them to the related document-titles, regardless of the language. Thus the user actually works with the UDC, without realizing it. This paper describes the experience with this OPAC and the work behind it.

Abstract:
In the Internet information space, advanced information retrieval (IR) methods and automatic text processing are used in conjunction with traditional knowledge organization systems (KOS). New information technology provides a platform for better KOS publishing, exploitation and sharing both for human and machine use. Networked KOS services are now being planned and developed as powerful tools for resource discovery. They will enable automatic contextualisation, interpretation and query matching to different indexing languages. The Semantic Web promises to be an environment in which the quality of semantic relationships in bibliographic classification systems can be fully exploited. Their use in the networked environment is, however, limited by the fact that they are not prepared or made available for advanced machine processing. The UDC was chosen for this research because of its widespread use and its long-term presence in online information retrieval systems. It was also the first system to be used for the automatic classification of Internet resources, and the first to be made available as a classification tool on the Web. The objective of this research is to establish the advantages of using UDC for information retrieval in a networked environment, to highlight the problems of automation and classification exchange, and to offer possible solutions. The first research question was is there enough evidence of the use of classification on the Internet to justify further development with this particular environment in mind? The second question is what are the automation requirements for the full exploitation of UDC and its exchange? The third question is which areas are in need of improvement and what specific recommendations can be made for implementing the UDC in a networked environment? A summary of changes required in the management and development of the UDC to facilitate its full adaptation for future use is drawn from this analysis.

Abstract:
The African Studies Centre (ASC) Leiden is an independent foundation associated with Leiden University. Its aims are to undertake research on Africa in the social sciences, to maintain a specialist library and documentation department, and to facilitate the dissemination of information on Africa. The library houses a broad-based collection in the field of the social sciences and the humanities, the only collection in the Netherlands focusing entirely on Africa. Current holdings include some 75,000 books, 2,000 periodicals, of which almost 600 are current subscriptions, about 1,000 documentaries and feature films, and a growing digital collection. Approximately half the holdings are English, about a third French, and the remainder is divided between German, Dutch, Afrikaans, Portuguese and Spanish. Between 2000 and 2006, the library carried out a project to improve subject access to the ASC collection by building an African Studies Thesaurus and converting all subject codes used until then into thesaurus descriptors.

Full text
Abstract:
The paper explores two possible solutions for integrating a thesaurus and a classification scheme, specifically UDC, in order to develop a common platform for subject information retrieval through both systems. The author reports and compares experiences from two Hungarian projects aimed at creating a complex system for combining UDC and thesauri under a homogeneous theoretical framework: MÁTrIkSz (Hungarian Comprehensive Information Retrieval Language Dictionary) and the project of thesaurus construction and implementation in the Hungarian National Library (Széchényi). The role of UDC in these two projects is analyzed with respect to the features supported, classification-based retrieval functionalities, and the perceived advantages in subject access and knowledge organization. The author explains the methodology of her research based on an examination of structured and well-documented examples and literature research into the theory of UDC and its use. The paper underlines the importance of cognition as the basis for concept-building and points out some possibilities and expedients for the integration of thesauri and the UDC.

Abstract:
Nowadays, museums may be characterized by two paradigms: traditional and contemporary, with research, documentation and exhibition activities being influenced by those two models. However, the way science is made and communicated is also changing, ie, from a specialized, fragmented practice toward an investigative practice, reigned by the "mix" of disciplinary relations and knowledge contextualization. The aim of this study is to observe how occurs the transposition from the knowledge classification of the UFRGS's Astronomy Department research lines, in a production sphere, to the knowledge classification of the UFRGS's Museum "At Home, in the Universe" exhibition, in a communication sphere. This research is a case study with qualitative approach, made by means of interviews, document analysis, observing, indexing and classification. The Universal Decimal Classification — UDC — was used for data analysis in the research lines' themes ad in the exhibition. As final considerations, this work points to the existing disciplinary relations in knowledge production and communication, in three levels: inter, trans and multidisciplinary. It also presents the UDC as a methodology for bibliometric and scientometric studies.

Abstract:
The article has been reviewed and accepted for publication in the Journal of Documentation
This is a preprint to be published in Journal of Documentation. Purpose - A general overview with up-to-date information on UDC use worldwide. Design/methodology/approach - The research combined e-mail interviews with LIS professionals in 208 countries, literature research and information obtained from UDC distributors/publishers (AENOR, BSI, UDC Consortium). The following categorization of UDC use was offered: A - dominant system; B - used in some kind of libraries only; or C - rarely used. Findings - Of the 208 countries contacted and researched through the literature in 2004-2006, the UDC was found to be used in 124 (60%) of the countries. In 34 (28%) of the countries researched (in Europe, Asia and Africa), UDC is the main classification system used across national information networks. In 45 (36%) of the countries it is used in certain kinds of libraries. In the remaining 45 (36%) of the countries it is used rarely, in only a few libraries or information centres. Research limitations/implications - It was beyond the scope of this research to provide any information regarding the actual number of institutions using UDC in a given country or to give an estimate of the size and number of document collections organized by it. Although a decline in UDC use since the 1980s was reported from a number of countries, it was not possible to measure this accurately. Practical implications: The interest shown for using UDC in the organization of digital collections, information exchange and cross domain and cross collection resource discovery depends on accurate knowledge of its actual usage worldwide. This gives a measure of its global importance and verifies its credentials as an indexing standard. This research, which attempted wider and more systematic coverage than previous surveys, should help clarify the status of UDC and its potential use in the networked environment. Originality/value - Up-to-date information on the presence of the UDC system across countries and languages. Paper type: Research paper

Abstract:
This is an abbreviated version of the original article.
This is an English translation of the article published in Vjesnik bibliotekara Hrvatske (Croatian Library Journal). The paper reports on a pilot study observing the level to which library classification, Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) specifically, is exploited in searching and browsing library OPACs. The study was conducted in 2004-2005. A selection of 30 Web OPACs using UDC from 22 countries were observed. The OPACs were representative of 5 in-house and 10 vendor library systems. Interface areas examined were: UDC access points, searching, browsing and display. In total, 23 designated interface functionalities were identified. From these observations, it transpires that there is a great discrepancy in the number of functions available, ranging from two to sixteen. The majority (87%) of OPACs have between seven and sixteen UDC related access points and functions enabled. Only four out of thirty catalogues offer top/down systematic browsing (i.e. knowledge area browsing), and only fourteen catalogues have a classification number in the bibliographic description hyperlinked to allow access to other titles in the same class. The study shows that Web OPACs offer different selections and a different number of functions in supporting searching or browsing UDC - even if libraries use the same vendor system. This study is only a pilot and does not analyse the differences between interface options in relation to the 'strength' of library systems and does not rank them according to their importance in IR. However, the study provides an insight into this, usually neglected, segment of library OPACs and establishes a framework for further research. At this stage the research does not include analysis of classification authority data on which the searching and browsing is based. Further research is planned to shed more light on IR specific functions and their relation to authority control and library systems.

Abstract:
The Universal Decimal Classification is a scheme of classification created with the purpose of organizingand arrange all kinds of recorded knowledge. It is an alphanumeric classification language that aims tosynthetically describe the content of documents, it matches a numeric notation to a broad conceptand, as it has been said above, it is used for the physical organization of library collections as well asfor their inventory in systematic catalogues. This study intends to identify and analyze the application of common auxiliaries of form of the UDC,namely (03), (031) and (038), and its use in the Biblioteca Geral da Universidade de Coimbra and in theBiblioteca Municipal de Coimbra. In order to achieve this goal, it was chosen a qualitative approach based on an exploratory study, itwas also made a literature review on bibliographic classifications mainly on the Universal DecimalClassification and its common auxiliaries, more precisely the common auxiliaries of form.In conclusion, it became evident that the use of the common auxiliaries of form is different in bothlibraries, since they have distinct audiences as well as structures. While the BGUC systematically usesthe studied common auxiliaries, which makes their notations more extensive, the BM Coimbra makesless use of them. One notices that this as to due, mainly, with their audience profile, very specific andhomogeneous in BGUC and more heterogeneous in BM Coimbra, but also with their structure and theway the audience reaches information.

The main issue of this investigation is geared towards the need to facilitate the information retrieval contained in the book collection of the Catholic University’s Library John Paul II. The access has until now been made by means of bibliographic classification with Universal Decimal Classification (UDC). The users, mainly undergraduate students, are not familiar with the classification tables and avoid searching with UDC, preferring keywords when they search, which leads to a high number of false hits in the results. Bearing in mind with the idea of providing the users with a better and simplified searching instrument, which could improve the precision of retrieval, it was decided to work on a controlled vocabulary by means of matching the UDC notations with less complex subject headings compiled from the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). The study was done by using bibliographic records that were already classified from the library’s online catalogue.

The school libraries analyzed, are not also used by grammar students, but also by preschool children (age three to six). The school libraries here studied, are integrated in the national network of school libraries (RBE) and are, nowadays, well equipped, modern and with a large range of recent documentation, which are diversified and adequate for the number and age of students who use them. They fulfill the necessities and curiosity of its users. Our school libraries have known how to comply with the purposes of this program, launched in 1996, which under international guidance by the IFLA and IASL, have put our school libraries to the level of other European school libraries. Through a candidature process, more than 2000 public school libraries are supported by the RBE. The School libraries of Grammar schools have, furthermore the support of the Public Libraries of each Town or District. These Public Libraries support school libraries trough a service and office called SABE, that uses, generally the same UDC, a division of knowledge divided into ten classes (0 to 9), which correspond to ten vast areas of knowledge. We verified that this division of knowledge is used by the majority of school libraries, even though the system is not imposed by the RBE. The same system/designation is also used to identify documents which are available on bookshelves. In spite of the fact mentioned before, the UDC can differ in each school library in some variations (colour, symbols), what makes evidence that the system itself is quite probably, as a designation for documents, not clear enough for the user of school libraries, children, who are between 3 and 10. To analyze this situation, in 16 different Public Libraries, was used a inquire trough questionnaire, given to the 16 corresponding SABE services. We can conclude that the CDU is used, while book designation/quote, in 80% of Grammar school libraries of the Lisbon district. All schools analyzed use adaptations, using mostly chromatic codes, what from our point of view, only shows that the CDU itself, does not respond to the needs and the profile of the users of the school libraries in question.

Abstract:
In this project, we seek to describe the project work we participated in promoted by the Library and Information Services of Faculty of Arts and Humanities of University of Coimbra for the Master degree in Information Science. With this in mind, the aim of this thesis is to present both the theoretical and practical aspects of the role of an Information Science professional, specifically a librarian, as well as all the services provided by this library for the users. It sets itself apart by having two perspectives: that of the work done by a professional for the users and the one of the user of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities Library. I based this thesis in the theoretical knowledge I accumulated throughout the course, as well as the practical work we performed in the internship. In the theoretical part, we explain the Universal Decimal Classification, emphasizing its structure, signs, common auxiliaries and main tables. The Classification Systems, the Bibliographic Classification, the ISBD norm and Documental Language are some of the topics we will cover. The practical segment of this project work is the explanation of the activities performed in SBD-FLUC, in which we worked with a cataloguing Software called Millennium — the main tool used in the Libraries of the University of Coimbra —, and with classification tools, such as the two versions of CDU (1990 and 2005). This part of the project work further revolved around the introduction the use of shelf mark (“cotas”) based on the Pha Table — a tool that completes the notation assigned to a monograph, making it even more specific in regards to the subject, for a more accurate shelving. From a personal point of view, the main results obtained from this project work were rather satisfactory, being that all the learning both practical and theoretical resulted in consolidation of the subjects previously studied. The review of the theoretical contents related to the Classification Systems, such as the CDU, are examples of how the theoretical component was important in this project work. This resulted in the shelving, by subject, of the monographs of the Translate Library Room (over 1000), using the notation of the bibliographical record, the shelving guidelines and the Pha Table. Furthermore, the classification of each monograph was checked and corrected or reintroduced, if deemed necessary. The project work was concluded, with every goal being accomplished.
