Abstract:
The article proposes an algorithm for decoding and representation in natural language of the Universal Decimal Classifycation (UDC) complex class numbers. The algorithm is based on the formal definition of correct class numbers using a generative grammar, which sets the list of structures starting with simple table codes of UDC classes. Then separate integers, auxiliary and independent class numbers are sequentially attached to the codes with special symbols of relations of classes, which compose the complex class number. The algorithm expresses the values of the analyzed complex indices by descriptions (names and notes) of the table classes included in the structure of the analyzed string. The class descriptions are accompanied with the logical connectors based on the functions of the auxiliary characters. They provide the idea on connection of concepts denoted in the class number. The algorithm action is described evidently for the analysis of combined index 539.4.019: [535-15+537.8.029.6]. The proposed algorithm is applicable both to visualize the meaning of complex class numbers, and to ensure the completeness and accuracy of the documents retrieval by the UDC classes.

Abstract:
This Paper Presents a Classification System for Managing and Indexing Hardcopy Engineering Drawings, Referred to, in this Paper, as Drawings Library Management System (DLMS), Developed for an Appropriate Technology Research Centre in Botswana. the System Is Akin to Common Library Cataloguing and Classification Systems such as the Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), Universal Decimal Classification and Others, which, though Are Well-Known and Have Been around for many Years, Are yet to Be Exploited for the Classification and Management of Paper Drawings. in Fact, Hardcopy Drawings Appear to Be Neglected Compared to the Softcopy Type, for which Various Scholarly Articles Have Been Done on their Classification, Retrieval and Management. this Is Unfortunate as, Invariably, it Is Hardcopy/paper Drawings that Are Mostly Used in Production, Especially in Developing Countries where the Power of CAD/CAM Is yet to Be Fully Harnessed. Accordingly, the DLMS, a Model Successfully Used in a Research Centre in Botswana for over Ten Years Is Proposed. The System Was Further Analysed against and Compared to Three Main Library Classification Systems, Namely, the Dewey Decimal, the Universal Decimal and the Library of Congress Systems. Results Show that the DLMS Is a Better Classification System for Managing Hardcopy Drawings.

Abstract:
Library classification was originally created for the purpose of thematic arrangement of books on the shelves in libraries on the basis of classification systems. The creation of the latter, in turn, is closely related to the classification of sciences, as works devoted to certain fields of knowledge or spheres of human activity are classified.Throughout their history, classification schemes have been transformed and structurally changed, based on the basic principles and levels of scientific knowledge. Originating in the ancient period, science has been developing for centuries according to the disciplinary principle. However, in the process of evolution of scientific knowledge there is interdisciplinary integration, which involves both natural, technical and social sciences. Complex fields of study are formed as a result of interscientific interaction, when the most distant sciences can discover a direct connection. This is a joint cognitive activity of specialists from different scientific disciplines, involving not only research, but also other types of activity (organizational, communicative, journalistic, etc.). Thus, the sphere of interdisciplinarity is formed. The article considers the representation of the problems of interdisciplinary research in the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) and in the Library and Bibliographic Classification (LBC), recognized as the national classification system of Russia.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Universal Decimal Classification system is widely used throughout the world for the arrangement of books in libraries and for the indexing of papers and reports as an aid to the retrieval of information. It is a comprehensive and language-independent system. The classification for astronomy and related topics (UDC 52) is used by many persons whose main interests are outside astronomy as well as by astronomical specialists. It is important that the classification be kept up to date, but the revision of UDC 52 is now overdue, as the last major revision was made in 1975 and published in 1977. It is clearly the responsibility of IAU Commission 5 to provide expert advice to the International Federation for Information and Documentation (FID) on the revision. Persons who are willing to participate in the work of revision are invited to write to the author, who is the current chairman of the relevant revision committee.

Abstract:
Objective – To determine the extent to which knowledge is currently addressed by the Library of Congress (LCC), Dewey Decimal (DDC), and Universal Decimal (UDC) classification systems. Design – Comparative analysis of the LCC, DDC, and UDC systems using Zin’s 10 Pillars of Knowledge. Setting – The Faculty of Philosophy and Science at a Brazilian university. Subjects – Forty one subject-related classes and 386 subclasses from the first two levels of the LCC, DDC, and UDC systems. Methods – To evaluate the LCC, DDC, and UDC systems, the researchers employed the 10 Pillars of Knowledge, a “hierarchical knowledge tree” developed by the lead author of this study (p. 878). According to the authors, the 10 Pillars of Knowledge seek to illustrate relationships between fields of knowledge while capturing their breadth. The first level of the Pillars consists of the following categories: Knowledge, Supernatural, Matter and Energy, Space and Earth, Nonhuman Organizations, Body and Mind, Society, Thought and Art, Technology, and History. Each of the 10 Pillars is further subdivided, resulting in a four level hierarchical structure of 76 categories. Of the 76 categories, 55 are unique subject areas. A selection of subject-based classes and subclasses from the first two levels of the LCC, DDC, and UDC systems were then mapped to the relevant subclasses within the Pillars. Analysis was limited to the first two levels of LCC, DDC, and UDC, except for the LCC categories of BF and BL where further subclasses were analyzed. Classes or subclasses in LCC, DDC, or UDC that were not subject based (for example, those based on publication type) were excluded from the study. In total, 41 main classes and 386 subclasses from LLC, DDC, and UDC were categorized using the 10 Pillars. Main Results – The LLC, DDC, and UDC systems were deemed to be complete and systematic in their coverage of only three of the 10 Pillars: Matter and Energy, Thought and Art, and History. This means that there was at least one class or subclass in each of the three systems that corresponded to the subclasses in these pillars. The remaining seven pillars were only partially covered by the three systems to varying degrees. For example, the coverage of religion in LCC and DDC show evidence of a bias towards Christianity and incomplete coverage of other faiths. In addition to the lack of completeness in terms of subject coverage, the researchers found inconsistencies and problems with how relationships between subjects were illustrated by the systems. For example, botany should be a subclass of biology, but the subjects occupy the same level in the LCC, DDC, and UDC systems. Researchers also noted cases where subclasses on the same level were not mutually exclusive e.g., the BR (Christianity) and BS (The Bible) subclasses in LCC. Overall, LLC performed slightly better than DDC or UDC, covering 47 of the 55 unique subject categories in the 10 Pillars. It was followed by UDC with 44 out of 55, and DDC with 43 out of 55. Some of the 55 unique subject categories in the 10 Pillars system were not represented by any of the systems: 3 subclasses under Society (Society at Large – Area Based, Social Groups – Age, and Social Groups – Ethnicity), 2 under Technology (Technologies – Materials and Technologies – Processes), and 1 under Foundations (Methodology). Conclusion – The researchers conclude that none of the three major classification systems analyzed provides complete and systematic coverage of the world of knowledge, and call for the library community to move to new systems, such as the 10 Pillars of Knowledge.

Abstract:
The second edition of the Bliss Classification (BC2) is a faceted classification scheme which reworks the original Bliss Classification, devised a century ago. It compares favourably in terms of its wealth of detail, the fineness of its analysis, its flexibility and the conciseness of its notation with its main rivals, the Library of Congress Classification, the Dewey Decimal Classification and the Universal Decimal Classification. The Art class, W, is one of the most detailed and best organised of the BC2 schedules, with the caveat that the author did not find the giving of priority to place over period and the listing of individual artists separately from their periods and places to be the most helpful arrangement. However, room is left for alternative arrangements within the scheme.

Abstract:
Classification systems are published primarily in the book form, for various purposes and in different versions. They are identified by the number or year of publication. The authors propose another variant of maintaining classification systems, i.e. in the card format. The authors discuss the issues of presenting classification schedules of popular classification systems on the Internet with special focus on their applications. They explain why privately owned classification systems, like Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) and Universal Decimal Classification (UDC), are not published on the Internet, while the systems supported by government organizations (e.g. national libraries) are traditionally published openly. The authors provide the example of the Library of Congress Classification (LCC), which is the United States’ National Classification System and which is published on open access. The project of the open presentation of the Library-Bibliographical Classification (LBC) in several versions supplemented with indices on the website of the Russian State Library (RSL) is described in more detail. The possibilities for their use are analyzed.

Abstract:
The authors discuss the findings of the study to compare relevant master versions of the State Rubricator of Sci-tech Information and Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) in Russian. The classifications are compared through the method of intellectual analysis of intrinsic and semantic characteristics of SRSTI subject headings and UDC main schedules and its general and special subdivision tables. The UDC compound numbers are assigned to over the half of all rubrication vertexes. Over one third of SRSTI headings are assigned the compound UDC numbers made of two+ simple or compound numbers. The semantic matches between SRSTI headings and assigned UDC numbers are established as logical match, inclusion or extension overlapping with provision for terminological, structural and semantic features of the classifications being compared, as well as of the substance of the subject areas and their indexing principles. The interreflection of SRSTI and UDC numbers is executed in three types of relations: equivalence, hierarchy, association. Based on the analysis of coefficients of distribution by types of relations between semantic SRSTI headings and UDC numbers, the conclusion is made on the relatively high matching of terminology and structure of the given classification systems in almost every thematic class of subject areas. The value of the study is that the “converter” between SRSTI and UDC is to expand functionality of the interrelated classifications.Russian National Public Library for Science and Technology, within the framework of the Government Order No. 075-01235-23-01, R&D theme No. 1021070112681-2-1.2.1;5.8.3, has been pursuing research for building the single network of links between classifications, development of “converters” between them for the purpose of computer-aided thematic systematization, and integration of dispersed information resources. Abstract:
Training in knowledge organization (KO) involves an understanding of theories for the construction, maintenance, use, and evaluation of logical documentary languages. Teaching these KO concepts in LIS programs are related basically to accessing documents and retrieving their intellectual content. This study focuses on access to documents and exploring the ethical theme in all its dimensions as applied to the teaching of an undergraduate discipline as part of a Bachelor of Library Science degree offered at the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG). As a methodology, a Project-based Pedagogy strategy is used in the teaching of a discipline called “Classification Systems: UDC” for students to classify a documentary resource from a collection on ethics. The teaching of bibliographic classification requires students to learn how to use the mechanisms available to form a notation as well as to use a syntax schema (tables) appropriately. Students also learn to determine a place for the document in the collection, considering the knowledge represented in the collection as a whole. Altogether, such a practice can help students to understand the theory underlying a classification system. The results show that the students were able to understand the basic concepts of knowledge organization. The students were also able to observe that the elements of the different tables of a classification tool are essential mechanisms for the organization of knowledge in other contexts, especially for specific purposes.

This completes the introductory part of the paper and addresses the main issues related to the classification of historical literature, with emphasis on the processing of books in the field of history for children. By pointing to characteristic examples, an attempt has been made to show the complexity of subject and professional classification in this particular field. This way of classification of these books is making history, both the national and general, more accessible and closer to children. All the examples in this paper are from the practice of the National library of Serbia and are taken from the COBISS.SR database.

Abstract:
Libraries have the main task in the processing of library materials by classifying books according to certain ways. Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC) is the method most commonly used in the world to determine book classification (labeling) in libraries. The advantages of this DDC method are universal and more systematic. However, this method is less efficient considering the large number of books that must be classified in a library, as well as labeling that must follow label updates on the DDC. An automatic classification system will be the perfect solution to this problem. Automatic classification can be done by applying the text mining method. In this study, searching for words in the book title was carried out with N-Gram (Unigram, Bigram, Trigram) as a feature generation. The features that have been raised are then selected for features. The process of book title classification is carried out using the Naïve Bayes Multinomial algorithm. This study examines the effect of Unigram, Bigram, Trigram on the classification of book titles using the feature extraction and selection feature on Multinomial Naïve Bayes algorithm. The test results show Unigram has the highest accuracy value of 74.4%.

Abstract:
Using various classifiers, which are thought to facilitate analytical work through structuring subject areas, in fact impedes this work. The authors present the method of combining several classification systems, namely the State Rubricator of Sci-tech Information (SRNTI); and RAS VINITI’s Rubricator of Disciplines; Universal Decimal Classification (UDC); International Patent Classification (IPC). The combination of these classification systems solves the fundamental problem which is to obtain the most detailed understanding of any scientific problem. The solution of this problem enables to determine search boundaries, filter out insignificant and irrelevant information on the subject (in this case – Microbiology). In their study, the authors selected the author's keywords and phrases. On the basis of the arrays of author’s keywords and phrases, an essential harmonized list of keywords and phrases for the basic Microbiology local rubricator was designed. Further, the selected keywords and phrases will serve as the foundation for building the ontological model of the discipline, which will enable computerized ontology building. The Microbiology draft rubricator developed by the authors comprises a three-level hierarchy. In particular, the first level is based on the classical concept of classification systems. Rubricator in Microbiology is developed on the basis of VINITI RAS classification of disciplines through the detailing method.

Massive amounts of data from different contexts and producers are collected and connected relying often solely on statistical techniques. Problems to the acclaimed value of data lie in the precise definition of data and associated contexts as well as the problem that data are not always published in meaningful and open ways. The Linked Data paradigm offers a solution to the limitations of simple keywords by having unique, resolvable and shared identifiers instead of strings This paper reports on a three-year research project “Digging Into the Knowledge Graph,” funded as part of the 2016 Round Four Digging Into Data Challenge (https://diggingintodata.org/awards/2016/project/digging-knowledge-graph). Our project involves comparing terminology employed within the LOD cloud with terminology employed within two general but different KOSs – Universal Decimal Classification and Basic Concepts Classification. We are exploring whether these classifications can encourage greater consistency in LOD terminology and linking the largely distinct scholarly literatures that address LOD and KOSs. Our project is an attempt to connect the Linked Open Data community, which has tended to be centered in computer science, and the KO community, with members from linguistics, metaphysics, library and information science. We focus on the shared challenges related to Big Data between both communities.

Abstract:
The paper reflects the results of activities related to the development of models of fragments of reality: their purpose, features and classification, in relation to the study of processes in pedagogy. The analysis of scientific research is carried out, revealing the basics of mental formation, construction and implementation in practice of the model–representation of the original, answering the questions “what should the model be and what properties should it have?”, “what information to carry and in what form to display?”, “how to characterize the developed model without revealing its content and features? The article includes examples of classification of models distinguished by the authors according to specific characteristics: the principle of conformity to the properties of the object and the degree of materialization, the sequence and periodization of their construction, the similarity of the model with the original, the direction of the main information flows circulating between the subject and the world around him. In order to organize knowledge and indicate the subjective position of the author, the principles of model construction, the requirements for their content and their inherent individual properties, taken as a basis in the work, are given. A variant of classification of models according to characteristics is proposed: relation to the original in the process of activity, method of implementation, form of representation and reflection of the state of the simulated object. The typology is based on the principle of a universal decimal classifier with the possibility of making changes and additions to the structure and content. The models mentioned in the works are included in a separate list, but due to functional similarity with other models (or rather a clear lack of originality), the presence of controversial issues in the issues of application in pedagogy, were not reflected in the proposed classifier.

Creating bibliographies (from the 17th century to modern times) is a way of describing books and other types of publications and classifying them according to certain standards, with the aim of providing sufficient information about a certain work. Since the end of the Second World War, with the increase in the number of publications on the territory of the newly formed state, there was a need to create a unique database of bibliographies of publications, in order to provide users with insight into the entire publishing activity of Yugoslavia. This work continued even after the independence of the Republic of Serbia, in the National Library of Serbia (NLS). In addition to creating bibliographies of monographic and serial publications, the NLS also creates bibliographies of articles and content from professional journals. The Department of Serial Publications, more precisely the Subject Analysis Subdepartment, is in charge of this work as a separate organizational unit. Within this department, in addition to the creation of bibliographies, bibliographies of articles from proceedings, CIP of articles (professional classification of articles from serial publications of articles), revision of the library collection, and translation of UDC (Universal Decimal Classification) tables are carried out.

Abstract:
The 11th part of our tour through one-dimensional binary Cellular Automata concerns period-2 rules, which form the second group in our classification of the 88 globally-independent CA rules according to the properties of their periodic orbits. In this article, we display the basin tree diagrams of all period-2 rules along with their time-2 characteristic functions, and then we prove that all rules belonging to group 2 have robust period-2 ω-limit orbits for any finite, and infinite, bit string length. This rigorous result, which pairs with the one about period-1 rules given in the tenth installment of our chronicle, confirms what we stated about period-2 rules on the basis of empirical evidence. In the second part of this tutorial, we introduce the notion of quasi global-equivalence and prove that there are only 82 quasi globally-independent CA rules. For the first time, we show that the space-time patterns of globally-independent local rules can depend on each other, and we present an example of quasi-global transformation. We also define the super string 𝄞, and its unique decimal representation x𝄞, dubbed the super decimal, which provides a completely transparent yet rigorous proof that rule [Formula: see text] is chaotic when L → ∞. Moreover, we present the basin tree generation formulas, which uncover the analytical relationships between basin trees of globally-equivalent rules. Last but not least, for pedagogical and epistemological reasons, we conclude this paper with the selection of rule[Formula: see text], instead of rule [Formula: see text], as the prototypic universal Turing machine for our future discourse.

Abstract:
Scientific libraries use different approaches and tools for subject retrieval. Issues related to electronic subject retrieval are widely discussed in the library community. The purpose of this review is to analyse publications of recent years on the aspects and problems related to subject retrieval in electronic catalogue (EC). For its preparation, the author used publications (and references to them) taken from the national bibliographic database — the Russian Science Citation Index (RSCI); the time coverage is 2003—2019. Particular attention in the studies is focused on the need to combine different information retrieval languages (IRL), thesauruses, subject headings and keywords to ensure effective and multi-aspect search. Since the domestic libraries have accumulated a lot of experience in indexing and retrieval through hierarchical classifications (UDC and LBC), it is necessary to use this at the full extent in the electronic subject retrieval. The authors of the recent studies on subject retrieval consider being the most effective the functioning of classification systems as part of the complex of linguistic tools of electronic catalogue. In the electronic environment, it becomes possible to use classification indexes as a set of characters that maximally reflect the content of the document, what involves the use of all fragments of the index as independent retrieval elements. However, the lexical composition of the classification information retrieval languages needs to be modified for effective use in the electronic catalogue. The main directions here can be as follows: unification of the structure and vocabulary of classification schedules, optimization of the structure of classification systems (using facetization principles), as well as formalization of the use of grammar tools, (it is necessary to ensure the unambiguity of their interpretation in the electronic catalogue). The review presents and analyses the areas where the subject retrieval has been developed in the electronic environment for over the past 16 years. For example, there has been developed and is being implemented the superstructure over Universal Decimal Classification (Library for Natural Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences), which allows users of the library to remotely conduct full-fledged subject retrieval. The paper also presents the new developments by the Russian State Library on subject retrieval, in particular, the project “Presentation of classification metadata of electronic libraries using linked data technology”. The author concludes that it is necessary to form a common space of related open data of various libraries.

Abstract:
The article presents the part of the epistolary heritage of the outstanding Russian and Soviet bibliographer, ideologist of the introduction of the universal decimal classification in the USSR – B. S. Bodnarsky. The article presents for the first time his little-known historical sources. There are twenty epistles to the Soviet historian S. I.-Ya. Borovoy. Generally, the correspondence of these bibliographers is of undeniable interest in the history of Soviet bibliography in particular, and in the history of historical science. The represented epistles are stored in the State Archives of Odessa region, in the fund of personal origin of professor S. I.-Ya. Borovoy. The published ego-documents cover the period from 1952 to 1968 and are a valuable source on the history of socio-cultural life of the early second half of the twentieth century. The provided materials reflect separate fragments of professional activity of two scientists and their personal and scientific communicative communications with some representatives of the Soviet scientific community. The epistles allow us to reproduce some details of the history of Soviet historical science, certain episodes of the biographies of a number of Soviet scholars of those years against the background of socio-cultural events. The particular interest is the epistles of B. S. Bodnarsky in the context of the study of his interpersonal relationships with colleagues and contain facts for a detailed description of the academic community of the time. The epistles also contain a description of human relations, emotional feelings about certain moments that took place in the scientific environment, a description of the atmosphere of everyday life. The special value of the presented primary sources is that their content demonstrates the presence of attentive and friendly attitude between scientists. To a large extent, the personal connections of S. I.-Ya. Borovoy and an influential scholar in academic circles helped his younger colleague to overcome some difficulties and gain recognition as a scholar in the field of bibliography at the All-Union level. The publication of the letters is accompanied by quite complete comments on their content and introduces a valuable historical source into scientific circulation.

The main Student requeSts for finding topics for course, scientific, diploma theses were Studied. Depending on the specialty in different courses, every Student in the field of culture and art begins to think about what to write his term paper, theses for the conference, scientific component of the diploma thesis. There are many well-written bestsellers, some even in Ukrainian, about the basic rules of writing and finding topics. The article also examines the context and inter-contextual perception of how to find one’s circle of interests among all the diversity of scientific paths. It is explained why the selection of the Universal Decimal Classification code is important in the Study. The article recommends how to avoid fear of writing and the supervisor. The article recommends how to rely on your own experience, available material and analyze available sources and your own interests. Procrastination and hedonism in the artistic environment. The main Steps to writing a scientific research are outlined, how to avoid fear of writing. In the article is recommended to write down phrases related to the chosen topic, to read scientific topics: articles, abStracts. An overview of the moSt common reasons for poStponing the Start of writing a paper, what is «writer’s block» and how to deal with it has been made. It is recommended to work on small tasks in Stages, to constantly consult with the manager, to seek help and advice from outsiders. Knock and somebody open. By reporting to him, you will be able to track the gradual movement for yourself. The moSt importantly, do not pretend to be perfect in your search, because there is no perfect scientific work. The important thing is to Start writing. From the firSt paragraph to the second, from the goal to the plan, from the object to the subject, from the small to the big, from the simple to the complex. Write and you will definitely make some discovery for yourself. We will gladly welcome you to the scientific circle with a discussion in your approbation. Therefore, write about what is close to you, write about what intereSts you, write about what you noticed while rereading someone’s texts, whether it is currently relevant, or what you read in view of the current State of affairs, about what has changed and what you did not imagine, or perhaps predicted by previous researchers.

Abstract:
Universal Decimal Classification (UDC) is a popular controlled vocabulary that is used to represent subjects of documents. Text categorization determines a text's category, as evident from the notation-text label format of the Universal Decimal Classification. With the help of machine learning techniques and the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC), the present work aims to develop an end-user (library professional) based recommender system for automatically classifying documents using the UDC scheme. The proposed work is conceived for determining and constructing a complex class number using the syntax of Universal Decimal Classification (UDC). A corpus of documents classified with the UDC scheme is used as a training dataset. The classification of the documents is done with human mediation having proficiency in classificatory approaches. The BERT model and the KNIME software are used for the study. This study uses the classified dataset to fine-tune the pre-trained BERT model to construct the semi-automatic classification model. The results show that the model is constructed with high accuracy and Area Under Curve (AUC) value, although the prediction represented a low accuracy rate. This study reflected that if the model is explicitly trained by annotating each concept and if the full licensed version of UDC class numbers becomes available, there is a greater potency of developing an automated, freely faceted classification scheme for practical use.

Abstract:
Palavras-chave: Mulher; Classificação Decimal Dewey (CDD); Classificação Decimal Universal (CDU).ABSTRACT The dynamics and emergence of new knowledge requires building new knowledge organization systems and reviewing others for the location and access of knowledege. In this process the structures of knowledge organization assume particular relevance, as effective instruments to accomplish these purposes. For its longevity, the bibliographical classifications stand out and among them particularly the Dewey Decimal Classification (CDD) and the Universal Decimal Classification (CDU). It is proposed to identify how these two systems represent the concept of woman and whether this can be considered as an indicator of two perspectives on the same concept. A qualitative exploratory approach was adopted, based on literature review and comparative analysis of the representation of this concept in the two systems considered. Two different perspectives are not observed in relation to the woman’s concept, because the two systems continue to translate the positivist mentality in which they were conceived. The low representativeness of the concept of woman in the two classification systems is evident with regard to exhaustivity and specificity. Both systems reflect the notion of woman in a depreciative and inferior plan to the masculine, translating the traditional stereotype. Keywords: Woman; Dewey Decimal Classification; Universal Decimal Classification.

Abstract:
Critical cataloguing aims to study cases of social injustice, misrepresentation, negative biases, offensive terminologies, and hegemonic and oppressive hierarchical structures in the representation of communities and identities in knowledge organization systems. The aim of this study is to provide a critical analysis of the representation of sexual orientation in the Portuguese Universal Decimal Classification, grounded in a qualitative content analysis method. The results show that the principle of exhaustiveness does not manifest itself in the representation of sexual orientation. The absence of the term ‘heterosexuality’ mirrors the heteronormative hegemony, while the minoritization of ‘lesbianism’, but not of ‘male homosexuality’, reflects the patriarchal hegemony. The representation of sexual orientation carries the historical pathologization of sexual orientations other than heterosexuality. The Portuguese Universal Decimal Classification conveys negative biases and misrepresents sexual orientation in a way that is irreconcilable with present-day reality. Critical thinking must be encouraged within the library community and the Universal Decimal Classification should be promptly revised and updated.

Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this study is to develop a model for automated classification of old digitised texts to the Universal Decimal Classification (UDC), using machine-learning methods.Design/methodology/approachThe general research approach is inherent to design science research, in which the problem of UDC assignment of the old, digitised texts is addressed by developing a machine-learning classification model. A corpus of 70,000 scholarly texts, fully bibliographically processed by librarians, was used to train and test the model, which was used for classification of old texts on a corpus of 200,000 items. Human experts evaluated the performance of the model.FindingsResults suggest that machine-learning models can correctly assign the UDC at some level for almost any scholarly text. Furthermore, the model can be recommended for the UDC assignment of older texts. Ten librarians corroborated this on 150 randomly selected texts.Research limitations/implicationsThe main limitations of this study were unavailability of labelled older texts and the limited availability of librarians.Practical implicationsThe classification model can provide a recommendation to the librarians during their classification work; furthermore, it can be implemented as an add-on to full-text search in the library databases.Social implicationsThe proposed methodology supports librarians by recommending UDC classifiers, thus saving time in their daily work. By automatically classifying older texts, digital libraries can provide a better user experience by enabling structured searches. These contribute to making knowledge more widely available and useable.Originality/valueThese findings contribute to the field of automated classification of bibliographical information with the usage of full texts, especially in cases in which the texts are old, unstructured and in which archaic language and vocabulary are used.
