Abstract:
Christian tradition speaks mainly of two possible post-mortem human destinies. It holds that those human beings who, in their earthly lives, acted according to God’s will and accepted God’s love will be reconciled to Him in heaven; whereas those who have acted against God’s will and refused His love will be consigned to the everlasting torments of hell. The notion that hell is everlasting and also a place of unending suffering inevitably gives rise to the following question for theists: how could an omnipotent, all-good and allloving God allow anyone to suffer the torments of hell for eternity

Abstract:
This thesis outlines a constructivist account of what has come to be known as 'thin universalism'. It makes the case for a substantively minimal account of universalism as a response to the facts of pluralism understood in a particular normative way. Following G.A. Cohen, it challenges conventional constructivist arguments about the privileged role of facts in the construction of normative principles and suggests that construction must be aimed not at 'first principles', which cannot be responsive to factual considerations, but at 'principles of regulation', which can. This thesis aims to construct a conceptual framework for characterising the relationship between duties to refugees and duties to fellow nationals. The need for such a framework is generated by the current impasse on the policy debate about the nature and scope of refugee rights. The thesis examines a range of liberal political theories to see if they can provide an adequate account, evaluating them on three criteria: normative desirability; practical feasibility; and internal coherence. The discussion criticises liberal theories on two levels. Firstly, it shows how liberal universalist theori
