Abstract:
The monograph is devoted to the uniqueness and universality of our being, earthly life, complexity, primarily multicellular organisms, intelligence and civilization. Despite the fact that all these phenomena are presented to us and in our person in the singular, their very existence indicates that, on the one hand, they obey the logic that runs through them all, and on the other hand, they observe certain universal rules for the implementation of something like this. That is, they are unique in their local representation, but they are constructed according to a template that applies to all such cases. The monograph consistently examines the multiplicity of hypostases of these realities and formulates the conclusion that, no matter how many of them there are, they must all fit into the mainstream of two principles — the embodied and the functional. Local conditions determine their final appearance, but the imperatives are the same for them all, and therefore these epithets do not contradict each other, but, on the contrary, are mutually complementary. It is intended both for specialists in the field of epistemology, ontology and philosophy of life, and for the general public interested in real issues.

Abstract:
This article deals with the universality of eigenvalue spacings, one of the basic characteristics of random matrices. It first discusses the heuristic meaning of universality before describing the standard universality classes (sine, Airy, Bessel) and their appearance in unitary, orthogonal, and symplectic ensembles. It then examines unitary matrix ensembles in more detail and shows that universality in these ensembles comes down to the convergence of the properly scaled eigenvalue correlation kernels. It also analyses the Riemann–Hilbert method, along with certain non-standard universality classes that arise at singular points in the limiting spectrum. Finally, it considers the limiting kernels for each of the three types of singular points, namely interior singular points, singular edge points, and exterior singular points.

Abstract:
Insurgent Universality presents an intervention in current discussions on universalism, democracy, and property. It investigates other trajectories besides traditional ones of modernity and traces an alternative legacy for contemporary movements. This legacy exceeds the familiar juridical horizon of citizenship, individual rights, and the state by revisiting questions relating to power, democratic practices, and the modern conception of private property. Insurgent Universality investigates and displays alternative trajectories of modernity that have been repressed, hindered, and forgotten. These trajectories are not only embodiments of a radical hope and a new conception of universality that arose from insurgencies from below; they also alert us to possibilities in our present that have been underestimated or overlooked. Eventually, they show us alternative institutions by which to reshape our present. These experimental democratic practices and institutions are based on the pluralism of authorities instead of the monopoly power of the state. However, such an inquiry resists the utopian urge to clear the tables. Instead, the book examines more closely, and with a fresh perspective, those aspects of our intellectual inheritance that we have allowed to remain in the darkness. By doing this, Insurgent Universality aims to “decolonize” European history, offering an image of Europe that is not monolithic but, rather, composed of many layers and paths that have been repressed or forgotten. The aim of the book is to rebuild those roads not taken and bridge them with non-European trajectories and political experiments.

Abstract:
Percolation deals with global properties of random configurations of local objects. While simple to implement in models, understanding percolation requires skill in pattern recognition and analysis. A cluster recognition algorithm is developed to obtain properties of percolation models. The fractal nature of a percolating system is discussed, along with general features of fractals. Scaling laws and critical exponents, which are central features of modern approaches to complex systems, are also introduced and illustrated with percolating systems. The important concept of a correlation function is also used to characterize these systems. Finally, the insensitivity of large classes of model systems with respect to short range dynamics, known as universality, is discussed in the context of percolation. This is illustrated with the modern concepts of coarse graining and the renormalization group.

Abstract:
This article examines the ‘dispute over tangents’ between René Descartes and Pierre de Fermat, which began in 1638, by comparing their methods of constructing tangents. Descartes’s method aims at a universality, whereas Fermat’s method aims at a generality. The article begins with a discussion of Descartes’s method of tangents, which he proposed in 1637 as a way of constructing ‘all the problems of geometry’. It then considers Fermat’s method, in which he introduces a rule for finding a maximum or minimum. It also looks at Descartes’s critiques of Fermat’s method as applied to the ellipse and the hyperbola, and how Fermat arrived at the question of the ‘specific property’ of a curve by constructing the tangents to non-geometric curves.
