Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Most of these patients undergo neoadjuvant therapy in order to de-escalate the axillary surgery in case of response (sentinel lymph node biopsy, targeted axillary dissection or targeted axillary dissection, instead of an axillary lymphadenectomy). The conversion from positive to negative nodes after neoadjuvant therpy is expected in approximately the 60% of the cases, depending by tumor subtypes. Several models have been proposed with the goal of identifying predictors of nodal response prior to neoadjuvant treatment. The immune system plays a pivotal role in cancer invasion and progression. Its role in treatment response is currently under investigation in several settings. Primary endpoint: to identify a preoperative immune profiling of breast cancer patients with nodal involvement at diagnosis and to correlate the immune changes after neoadjuvant therapy with the nodal response (macrometastases, micrometastasis, isolated tumor cells, complete response). Trial design: It is an international prospective cohort study including breast cancer patients undergoing standard neoadjuvant therapy, who present initially with biopsy-proven axillary lymph node metastasis. Ten immune markers will be analyzed using immunohistochemistry and tissue microarray in primary tumor and nodal tissue samples (tumor associated neutrophils, CD4 lymphocytes, CD8 lymphocytes, T regulatory cells, Macrophages, Follicular dendritic cells(DC), plasmocytoid DC, interdigitant DC, mature DC, Lysosomal associated membrane protein 3). The tissue analysis will be performed on the biopsy collected at diagnosis (prior to neoadjuvant therapy) and during the axillary surgery (after neoadjuvant therapy). Target accrual/sample size: 210 patients Statistical analysis: To compare the distribution of immune cells according to the state of lymph node metastasis, Student’s t test will be performed. Pearson’s chi-square test will be used to evaluate the correlation between immune profile and nodal response, based on clinic-pathological features. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) will be calculated using logistic regression analysis. Multivariable analysis will be performed using the multivariable logistic regression model. Logistic regression models will be used to identify the clinical, pathologic and immunological variables associated with the nodal response. P-values less than 0.05 will be considered significant. Analyses will be performed using Microsoft IBM SPSS® version 20.0 for Mac. Current status: Recruitment has not started yet. Abstract:
Antonio Scarpa (1752-1832) was chairman of anatomy and surgery at the university of Pavia for thirty years since 1783. The study of the manuscripts containing his surgical lectures, collected by his pupils, is the basis for the knowledge of the method of teaching in its twofold dimension of the theoretical matter and of the practical demonstration. Starting from the analysis of one of these manuscripts, entitled «Lezioni di operazioni chirurgiche del Cav. Prof. Antonio Scarpa» the value of these collections of notes is discussed and their significance as a textbook for the students is emphasized. The survey of every single lecture demonstrates that the theoretical exposition immediately preceded the operative procedure on the corpse. Finally the qualities expected by Scarpa in the teachers and the students for a satisfactory education in surgery are considered. Fulfilling his mastership Scarpa Struggled to convey to the pupils the method learned when he himself was a student. He was therefore considered the head of the anatomy and surgery school in Pavia.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The essay takes into account a couple of recent studies about the personal path of Edoardo Gemelli, later known in religion as father Agostino. As a medical student at the University of Pavia and Ghislieri College, Edoardo used to profess socialist ideas, but during his years there, he experienced a spiritual emergency, which urged him to the conversion to the Catholic faith. Figures, friends and the cultural milieu of that time are the matter of the study by Luciano Pazzaglia, who carried out a research about Gemelli’s early life. Also the study by Michele Madonna is closely related to those years and to the same perspective of Gemelli’s social and religious engagement. Here, the author explores the main issues about the relations between Church and State, which were debated during the first thirty years of the Catholic journal “Vita & Pensiero”.

Abstract:
This paper discusses methodological aspects by illustrating the fi rst products of a researchproject developed as part of a collaboration agreement between the DICAr - Departmentof Civil Engineering and Architecture of the University of Pavia and the enterprise GEAs.r.l. Archaeology, for the documentation of the archaeological excavations in the former SantaMargherita Institute in Pavia (Italy). The activities, carried out by the experimental laboratoriesDAda-LAB and PLAY, regarded the documentation of the archaeological evidences, datingback to the 4th century AD, brought to light by the interventions of conversion and remodellingof the historical and architectural complex. The need to produce documentation apparatus tosupport the excavation activities is boosted by the fragility of the archaeological site, apparentlymeant to disappear to allow space for the construction of an underground car park. The research aims to develop a methodology for the organisation of the data acquired in themultiple excavation campaigns, the production of databases useful to archaeologists for thechronological interpretation of the excavation, the detection of archaeological emergencies andthe development of an information system that combines models and databases. Since March2022, data acquisition campaigns have been undertaken to progressively survey the phases ofexcavations. Data sheets were then developed for stratigraphic units and deposit units, andan effective GIS system was developed to represent the complex nature of the site by makingclear the relationships between the stratigraphic units. The fi rst results of the research outline amethodological process that leads to the development of a digital ‘container’ in which it becomespossible to include the data collected during the campaign by reducing the time gap betweenacquisition, recording, processing and synthesis of information.

Abstract:
The genetic causes of epilepsies and developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEE) with onset in early childhood are increasingly recognized. Their outcomes vary from benign to severe disability. In this paper, we wished to retrospectively review the clinical, genetic, EEG, neuroimaging, and outcome data of patients experiencing the onset of epilepsy in the first three years of life, diagnosed and followed up in four Italian epilepsy centres (Epilepsy Centre of San Paolo University Hospital in Milan, Child Neurology and Psychiatry Unit of AUSL-IRCCS di Reggio Emilia, Pediatric Neurology Unit of Vittore Buzzi Children’s Hospital, Milan, and Child Neurology and Psychiatry Unit, IRCCS Mondino Foundation, Pavia). We included 168 patients (104 with monogenic conditions, 45 with copy number variations (CNVs) or chromosomal abnormalities, and 19 with variants of unknown significance), who had been followed up for a mean of 14.75 years. We found a high occurrence of generalized seizures at onset, drug resistance, abnormal neurological examination, global developmental delay and intellectual disability, and behavioural and psychiatric comorbidities. We also documented differing presentations between monogenic issues versus CNVs and chromosomal conditions, as well as atypical/rare phenotypes. Genetic early-childhood-onset epilepsies and DEE show a very wide phenotypic and genotypic spectrum, with a high risk of complex neurological and neuropsychiatric phenotypes.

Abstract:
In 1496, Pavao Paladinić (Paolo Paladini, Paulus Paladinus, c. 1465 – c. 1513), a humanist from Hvar, composed his longest preserved text, The Oration of Pavao Paladinić of Hvar delivered in Taranto, in praise of the divine Frederick, Prince of Altamura, Illustrious Admiral of the Kingdom of Sicily and Governor-General. The text survives in a codex held today in Valencia (Universitat de València, Biblioteca Històrica, MS 132). The manuscript was a gift for Frederick of Aragon (1451–1501), the second son of the king of Naples, Ferdinand I (Ferrante). Frederick himself became king of Naples in October 1496. The paper introduces both Paladinić and Frederick, outlines the rhetorical features of Paladinić’s panegyric, and evaluates two modern editions of the Latin text (VALERIO 2001, GRACIOTTI 2005). The panegyric is provided in Latin and Croatian translation. Frederick of Aragon was the last king of Naples from the House of Aragon, ruling briefly in 1496–1501, after French King Charles VIII seized Naples in February 1495 and claimed the kingdom’s crown. Frederick spent much time abroad and refused to take part in the revolt of the barons, remaining loyal to his father, brother, and nephew. As king, he was forced to abdicate when confronted with the treaty of Granada in 1500. He had a keen interest in the arts and literature; in 1476 Lorenzo de’ Medici presented him with the gift of the Libro di Ragona, a collection of 500 poems by Dante, Cavalcanti, Cino da Pistoia, Pulci, and Boiardo. In the preface Frederick is compared to Peisistratos of Athens, who organised the transcription of Homer’s poems. Frederick’s court at Naples included a number of Petrarchist poets. The Paladinić family came to the Adriatic island of Hvar at around 1430 from Lecce, which in 1463 became directly subject to the Aragonese Kingdom of Naples. In Hvar the Paladinići became one of the richest families. Nikola Paladinić (born ca. 1419), Pavao’s father, served as the sopracomito of the Hvar galley in the Venetian navy several times between 1471 and 1497. In 1475 he was awarded the Order of Saint Mark. He had three sons: Pavao, Toma (killed in 1514 during the Hvar Rebellion) and Frano. Pavao accompanied his father in military expeditions, taking part in the capture of Monopoli in 1495 and in the battle at the Bocca d’Arno in 1497. In 1510, he composed a report (in Italian) on the crucifix from Hvar that perspired blood. Pavao Paladinić was in contact with the Dalmatian and Italian humanist poets Ilija Crijević, Tideo Acciarini, Frano Božićević Natalis, Pietro Contarini and Cassandra Fedele. The little known humanist Joannes Perlotus wrote De Nicolai Palladini Pharii equitis aurati Paulique eius filii militia ac memorabilibus gestis historiola per Joannem Perlotum edita, a brief celebration of the military achievements of Nikola and Pavao in 1475–1497 (preserved today as a manuscript in the National and University Library of Split); Nikola and Pavao were praised briefly in the Latin oration by Vinko Pribojević, De origine successibusque Slavorum (delivered in Hvar in 1525, printed in Venice in 1532). Pavao Paladinić praised Frederick of Aragon during the siege of Tarento, undertaken by joint forces of Naples and Venice, with a clear political goal: Frederick had to be persuaded to spare the city of Taranto, whose citizens were eager to surrender to Venice (and even to the Ottomans) to avoid massacre and destruction by the Aragonese army. For this reason, Paladinić insisted on the humanitas of the Aragonese prince. Paladinić’s panegyric follows the chronology of Frederick’s life, but mentions important events of that life only in very vague terms. The main themes of the panegyric are Frederick’s activities at home and abroad; there are remarks on the dignity of the human soul, on the best form of governance, on the island of Hvar and the Paladinić family, on his travels, and on the Necessity which rules human life. Paladinić cited or mentioned a number of names from Greek and Roman Antiquity (Tibullus, Xenocrates, Porphyry of Tyre, Plotinus, Augustine, Cicero, Strabo, Polybius, Aristotle, Apuleius and Hermes Trismegistus, Seneca, Pliny the Elder, Pythagoras, Vergil); while VALERIO 2001 identified most of Paladinić’s sources, I have been able to prove that Paladinić used – without naming it – the popular Italian commentary on Petrarch’s Trionfi by Bernardo da Siena (Bernardo Illicino, ca. 1430), first printed in 1475. Of the two modern editions of Paladini’s Latin panegyric, VALERIO 2001 is more reliable philologically, while GRACIOTTI 2005 is better on the Dalmatian context, and edits both Paladini’s prose and poetry from the Valencia codex.

Abstract:
This work presents the tests of a multi-gap detector (MGD), composed of three parallel-plate ionization chambers (ICs) with different gap widths, assembled to prove the capability of correcting for charge volume recombination which is expected to occur when high fluence rates are delivered. Such beam conditions occur with a compact accelerator for charged particle therapy developed to reduce the costs, to accomplish faster treatments and to exploit different beam delivery techniques and dose rates as needed, for example, for range modulation and FLASH irradiations, respectively. The MGD was tested with carbon ions at the Centro Nazionale di Adroterapia Oncologica (CNAO Pavia, Italy), and with protons in two different beam lines: at Bern University Hospital with continuous beams and at the Laboratori Nazionale del Sud (Catania, Italy) of the Italian National Center of Nuclear Physics (INFN) with pulsed beams. For each accelerator, we took measurements with different beam intensities (up to the maximum rate of ionization achievable) and changed the detector bias voltage (V) in order to study the charge collection efficiency. Charge recombination models were used to evaluate the expected collected charge and to measure the linearity of the rate of ionization with the beam fluence rate. A phenomenological approach was used to determine the collection efficiency (f1) of the chamber with thinnest gap from the relative efficiencies, f1/f2 and f1/f3, exploiting the condition that, for each measurement, the three chambers were exposed to the same rate of ionization. Results prove that two calibration curves can be determined and used to correct the online measurements for the charge losses in the ICs for recombination.

Abstract:
The search for new knowledge led the Milanese nobleman Alessandro Volta (1745-1827) to correspond with different scholars from other nationalities through his life. The present study looked at these correspondences, seeking to understand the relationships established by them as a method to develop their theories, as well as a facilitating means for requesting new instruments and documents. In an analysis of the work Epistolário di Alessandro Volta (1949-1955), that gathers about 1663 letters written between 1761 and 1827, we seek to verify how the network of connections was constituted. With the help of the historiographical study, we mapped life, education degree, political functions, publications, and the impact of Alessandro Volta's work on the construction of science at the time. In the scenario of political instability and changes in conceptions, Volta integrates with his ideas some debates in the field of physics and the “new chemistry” of the Frenchman Antoine-Laurent Lavoisier (1743-1794). In this study, we also focus on Volta's dialogues and interlocutions with other scholars during the second half of the 18th century, a period in which he developed his research and theories on aerology and electricity. Among his various correspondences, we highlight the dialogues with the Englishman Joseph Priestley (1733-1804), which made it possible to notice some changes in Volta’s scientific conceptions. Finally, we present our scholar's research for the institutionalization of Experimental Physics, instrumentalizing theory and practice, with the construction and expansion of the Physics Cabinet, located at the University of Pavia, also acquiring new apparatus from distant places, modernizing the space that solidified his experiences and studies.

Abstract:
Periodo: Principado (27 a. C. – 284 d. C.) ABSTRACTThe Roman institution of the domicilium turns the subject into a resident. It usually designates the place of prolonged residence of the incola or inhabitant who has emigrated to a community, as opposed to the municeps. Therefore, it is a legal link between the city and the person who emigrates there. As opposed to the expression of the origo in epigraphic texts, which is very common, the manifestation of the domicile occurs only exceptionally, in view of the scant number of surviving references, and its enunciation is very similar to that which indicates provenance. Abstract:
Investigating lay investment in the sacred sphere means first of all to clarifying historiography on laity, religion and money within Ancien Régime societies and their transposition to America, taking into account the multiple motivations of secular actors. The example of restitutions, donations and legacies inthe Andes enables us to explore the role of the Spanish laity and indigenous populations in the establishment of the dense network of Catholic institutions that was established during this period. The proposal postulates the role of lay actors in the construction of a Christian space in the Peruvian Andes in the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, when economic investment contributed to the transition from a society of war and conquest to a pacified, corporate society.KEY WORDS: Hispanic America-Andes, religion, economics, encomienda, 16th and 17th centuries. Abstract:
Paolo Mantegazza has been Rector of the University of Milan for four consecutive mandates, from 1984 to 2001, after having been for 10 years Dean of the Medicine and Surgery Faculty (from 1974 to 1984). His rectorship period has been a time of great change in the society but also in university, as a result of the Universityre form law, Decree 382, passed in 1980. In 1989 the law no. 168 granted to the universities the statutory and regulatory autonomy as provided for in the art. 33 of the Constitution. In those days there has been a great increase in the number of students too, particularly in the University of Milan. While in the academic year 1983-1984, at the beginning of Paolo Mantegazza’s rectorship, the registered students were 63.450, in the following years the student number has increased to almost 100.000, thus entailing an intensive work to make suitable the teaching performance and the overall activity for such a huge number of students. Paolo Mantegazza has directed the University trying to carry out this ever-growing task, acting on different fronts. Considering among these the total regulatory framework of the Athenaeum. Actually he has promoted the introduction of a new statute (1996) and the approval of the main rules, implementing the University autonomy. The great growth of the Athenaeum caused different problems: the increasing of the teaching staff to cope with the huge numberof students, but new buildings too. In this last regard he did a lot in different areas in the interest of the great part of the Athenaeum faculties. Nevertheless the dimensions reached by the University of Milan required a more far-reaching plan to carry out the decongestion of the Athenaeum. He worked towards the doubling of some faculties and the creation of new degrees and new faculties. However it was very soon clear that the most rational solution consisted in the institution of a second Athenaeum in Milan, already assumed when the three-year plan 1991-1993 had been compiled. Thus in 1998 the University of Milan Bicocca was born. In the same year, with the contribution of Paolo Mantegazza and the University of Milan, together with the Pavia University, was instituted the Università dell’Insubria, with branches in Como and Varese. In 1996 was instituted the Vita e salute San Raffaele University too, with a great contribution of the University of Milan during the rectorship of Paolo Mantegazza, transferring there several teachers of the Medicine and surgery Faculty without forgetting the role of Mantegazza as President of Medicine in supporting a University Center in Brescia and the following establishment in 1982 of an independent university. The commitment of Mantegazza for the development of the scientific research in the University has been wide-ranging. At the end of his rectorship the University of Milan was the first Italian university in different international rankings concerning the scientific production. Thanks to these results, at the end of his rectorship in 2002, the University of Milan has been the only University invited to be one of the 12 european universities called up to found the “League of European Research Universities” (best known as LERU) that connects the most prestigious European Universities. During his rectorship he performed his duties (for two mandates) as Vice President of the Rectors Conference of the Italian Universities. He has been a rector of human qualities, with a great operative capability together with a gentle nature. He was sensitive to the student needs, considering the teaching and the student education the first goal of the University. Soon after the end of his Rectorship the then Minister of Education, University and Research, Letizia Moratti, accepted the modification of the Statute of University that in the meantime had been proposed, with the addition of a new article (Art. 56) stating: “In consideration of the merits and the decisive commitment given to the Athenaeum during his rectorship, we confer to Paolo Mantegazza the honouring of Rector Emeritus”.

Abstract:
This paper offers a contribution to the history of historiography on the University of Pavia. The Author takes into account both the treaties explicitly dealing (since the 18th Century) with the history of the University, but also all the evidence of a historical consciousness about the origins and history of the University; such a historical consciousness started to appear in 1361, when the Visconti Family officially founded the University. Particular attention is paid to the three interpretations about the foundation (origo), which has been attributed to the Lombard Kings, to Charlemagne and to Lothair I. For a long time there was a widespread belief in Europe that the University of Pavia had been founded by Charlemagne, simultaneously with the University of Paris; the creator of this tradition (based on the history of Charlemagne written by Notker the Stammerer) was Barthélemy de Chasseneuz, in 1525. The attribution of the founding to Lothair in 825 is only a recent idea, which has been nourished, with different intentions, by the 19th Century German legal historians who discovered a school of Lombard Law in Pavia (attested since at least the 10th Century) and by the Celebrations held in Pavia in 1925.

Abstract:
The paper discusses the origins and the main features of Emilio Gabba’s familial library. It highlights the connection between his interests as a historian and the various books in the catalogue. The library itself was created in the 18th century by the Visconti, a family of notaries from Pavia, deeply connected with the cultural environment of the city and with its university. Among the most important books in this library, many works are written by historians and political thinkers, in addition to several legal texts. A few books underline the family’s interesting in Jansenism, which had spread to the university of Pavia, at the same time as the reforms wished by Empress Maria Teresa of Austria.
