LABARILE, MISA. "Il ruolo sociale delle Università il caso della partnership Boston University-Chelsea." Doctoral thesis, Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore, 2008. http://hdl.handle.net/10280/306.
Full textMy thesis in this work is that the universities could be active agents of development, intervening successfully on a local problematic area by networking with public and private actors in order to generate two specific factors of development: social and human capital. I set this idea in the context of the literature on higher education and the debates on innovative and active social functions for the contemporary university. This is the focus of Chapter 1. In Chapter 2 I approach the problem on a deeper level, in its organizational terms: I analyse the public-private partnerships as instruments for the universities to self-assign and re-interpret their local engagement for the creation of human and social capitals. The hypothesis presented in the first two chapters are tested in Chapter 3 on my case study: the Boston University-Chelsea Partnership, a unique example of the day-by-day management of a public district (the Chelsea public schools, MA) by a private university (the Boston University). My case study is set in context in Chapter 4, through the provision of other cases that, albeit not comparably, address similar concerns (quality of education and systems reform, and higher education policies and mission). All these cases are US-focused.

Full textThis thesis describes and analyses the teaching of Portuguese in Italian universities, paying particular attention to the Brazilian variety. In order to capture the inter-related set of factors composing the teaching/learning process in these particular settings, our research takes three main angles: i) a reflection on the geographical varieties of Portuguese, in particular Brazilian, on the basis of contemporary linguistic and sociolinguistic studies in this area; ii) a survey of the current state of teaching of Portuguese in Italian universities, with quantitative analysis of the results of an online questionnaire; iii) a qualitative account of teaching practices, both face-to-face and online, based respectively on the linguistic and cultural analysis of teaching materials used in universities, and on that of interactions between students working in teletandem. Our work has allowed us to trace a representative picture of the teaching of Portuguese in academia, and to show how online activities can complement traditional teaching, emphasising the links between language and culture and thereby contextualising the learning of the language and culture of Brazil.

Full textThe increased use of online payments and banking have turned financial institutions and their products into cybercriminals’ main target. Cryptomarkets and their forums facilitate both the sale of personal financial data and fraud of financial institutions and their customers. At the same time, carding is a crime that requires the acquisition of a certain level of skills to be perpetrated. Many darknet forums have turned into platforms where users can exchange knowledge on efficient methods to carry out the online fraud. The current study aimed to determine the significance of social learning theory in explaining carding offending. It tried to examine the mediating role of online platforms in the social learning process. To achieve these objectives the study relied on a mixed-method approach, including a content analysis of a forum content and an online survey. The results provided support for the influence of social learning theory elements on the probability of involvement in carding activities. The presence of favourable definitions and differential reinforcement seemed to have the strongest effect on the crime. Unlike real-world social ties, online associations and the online imitation of models influenced perpetration of carding offences.

Full textThe subject of this paper is assessment in university contexts. We intend to investigate the assessment processes related to students’ learning from the point of view of cultures (the values and meanings associated with the process), policies (strategic and organizational choices) and practices (tools, procedures used). The originality of this work with respect to the existing investigations on the subject is represented by the specific lens that has been chosen to adopt in reading what will emerge from the research: the lens is that of accessibility. In university contexts where heterogeneity is inevitably present in different forms (aptitudes towards learning, previous training experiences, motivation, facilitators / obstacles for learning and participation), it becomes important to give value to a construct such as that of Accessibility that arises in the context of philosophy of Universal Design and which, in dialogue with assessment, reveals opportunities for rethinking and improvement starting from questions such as: is it possible to think about an assessment process that promotes accessibility for all? What does it mean to design a universal assessment process? The chosen research design is the case study. The instruments used are document analysis (60 documents), questionnaires (156 teachers and 380 students) and Focus Groups (17 students).

Y. 2014-2015 The complexity , uncertainty and transformations of contemporary society affect the lives of each of us for the entire lifetime (throughout the life-span). The adult in particular is obliged to deal with transitions and if possible to anticipate them, process them and redesign them. So it is important that the adult is able to understand the interconnections and interdependencies, in the reading of become transnational problems by the time, able to acquire the categories of transformation , risk, participation and “responsibility” (Hans Jonas) for the construction of a "nomadic and migrant thinking" (Franca Pinto Minerva) and of a " plural thinking " (Isabella Loiodice). The University, as a place of learning and critical processing of knowledge, is appointed to help achieve these aims and is an ideal setting to continue learning directing its activities to a project of integral formation of the person. Through the thesis Scenarios for adult education in a European perspective : the role of the University for a project of integral formation I have investigated as the University, in the formal system of lifelong learning, has responded to the needs and the demand expressed by adults; what policies and organizational and curricular devices were activated and can take steps to increase the participation and equal access to the activities of education and training. The activities of exploration, statistical overview and qualitative description and interpretation of the results and reading of practices have served to bring key factors into focus, positive points and existing problems, to draw some proposals and identify additional project lines of research.

Full textThe research analyses the teaching careers of Italian artists Costantino Nivola (1954-57, 1970) and Mirko Basaldella (1957-69) at the Graduate School of Design, Harvard University, focusing in particular on the Design Workshop, founded – with the contribution of Nivola, its first director – in 1956, and directed by Basaldella from 1957 to his death in 1969. The peculiar case of two artists so involved with archetypal shapes defying both abstraction and figure, but forces to teach courses based on “design”, makes it necessary to introduce the subject with two chapters of theoretical character, addressing the problematic definition of “design” and its importance on the 20th-Century evolution of the contents and methods of art education in the American university, and particularly on the assimilation of the Bauhaus model. Such cumbersome influence is used as a way to clarify the distance between the art produced by the contemporary American avant-garde and the art taught at college level, mirroring the co-existence of two different formulations of modernism. In the space created by such distance Nivola, Mirko, and also Bruno Munari – Visiting Professor at Harvard in 1967 – work as college teachers.

Full textThe rise of English as a ‘global’ lingua franca has brought applied linguistic scholarship to question the tenets of English language teaching (ELT). In the expanding circle, the traditionally accepted English-as-a-foreign language (EFL) pedagogical model appears today outdated and possibly even obsolete. Before any changes in English language education can be confidently suggested it is important to understand the perceptions and the opinions of the ELT stakeholders. The importance of attitude studies related to the context of ELT has long been recognized and over the last two decades several such studies have investigated, with various foci, the teachers’ and learners’ attitudes towards English in educational contexts, revealing the high vitality of the native English norm. To date, most studies that examined the attitudes towards English of university students were conducted in specific ELT contexts and there is a need for further research that also involves students who do not specialize in English. This research consists of a study that investigates the attitudes towards English, English as a lingua franca (ELF) and English teaching of a population of students of three Departments of the Università di Modena e Reggio Emilia. The research has the objective of contributing to the task of assessing the established EFL models of English language pedagogy, and of pointing to possible future directions for both research in applied linguistics and ELT practitioners. In accordance with this objective, the following research questions were generated: 1. What are the students’ attitudes towards English? 2. What are their attitudes towards ELF? 3. What are the students’ opinions on the teaching of English? 4. Is an ELF-informed approach in tune with the students’ own perceived needs? The research method adopted for this study draws on folk linguistics and the direct approaches to the study of language attitudes. A mixed-methods approach was used for the collection of the data that integrated a structured questionnaire and semi-structured individual interviews. A total number of 254 questionnaire were collected and 28 valid interviews were conducted, between December 2019 and May 2020. The analysis of the data combined a qualitative and a quantitative technique, although with an emphasis on qualitative interpretation. The findings suggest a generalized favorable orientation towards English. By vast majority, the participants viewed English as a necessary tool for social inclusion and a gateway to future professional opportunities. Although the view that English belongs to the native English speakers from the inner circle was found to prevail, it nevertheless coexisted with an instrumental view of English as a de-territorialized and de-nativized tool that can be appropriated by the non-native speakers. The participants’ views on ELT revealed a prevailing orientation towards native English and a significant influence of native-speakerism and standard language ideology. However, the findings also demonstrated that ELF-aware instruction and especially training in linguistics influenced the students’ attitudes towards varieties of English, bringing them to question the image of a monolithic English, notions of ‘standard English’, and exclusive legitimacy of native-speaker norms. Pointing to a gap between the more traditional ways of EFL pedagogy and the realities of English in the out-of classroom, several interviewees were critical of ELT in their how country’s education system. The findings strongly suggest that there is a need to shift ELT practices in the Italian education system away from the traditional grammar translation (GT) method and support English learning with a solid training in linguistic theory.

Full textThe Entrepreneurial University concept represents an evolutive model of university, coherent with the required changes from the historical context which identifies the knowledge as a fundamental pillar to promote economic and social development. The University adds to the traditional high education and research missions a third mission, whose task is to integrate the first two and contribute building links with local contexts in order to transfer and acquire knowledge. The establishment of the third mission means innovative relationship models that require answers from the academic governance regarding policies, organization and resources allocation. The impact of the third mission on the universities and on the communities creates the conditions for a different culture and role of the University. The aim of this research is to investigate the consequences of the structuring of the third mission on universities. Two analyzes are proposed: first, the improvement triggered by public engagement, one of the most complex areas of the third mission; second, a structural organisation aspect, namely the introduction in the academic context of a monitoring process and an impact assessment. The first part of the research focuses on the evolution of the role of the University. The analysis recalls, in the light of the literature, some of the most relevant steps that created the idea of Entrepreneurial University and third mission, by proposing a view of the University as completly involved in the economic and social system. We investigate the relationships between the university with the growth models of innovation generation, starting from Triple Helix, open innovation, EU policies of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) and Social Innovation, up to the definitions of third mission and social impact. Starting from a theoretical framework, the second chapter focuses on the implications of public engagement and co-creation between universities and companies, with reference to case studies of entrepreneurship education related to the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. In particular, we study how these implications are managed, how they are implemented and what consequences they generate. The study deepens subjects under researched in the literature which is more concentred in the mere analysis of the relations between companies and consumers. The third chapter investigate a more general organizational issue, namely the monitoring and impact. The assessment of the size of the structural changes generated by the university, in the context of the knowledge economy, is increasingly relevant. The literature seems to confirm the difficulties in providing shared metrics and indicators since the nature, history and context of each university do not allow the identification of universal indicators. In this regard, a case study related to the introduction of the monitoring and evaluation processes of the third mission at the University of Milan is proposed: by evaluating the elements of organizational complexity of a system aimed to monitore and enhance the impact of the third mission in a large university. The conclusions summarize the results of the research providing a coherent view of the topics covered. The common thread in the case studies analysis, refers to the learning processes gathered by the Universities, highlighting the changes generated in terms of policies, organization, knowledge and resources and, finally, forecasting a vision for the long run.

Full textSeveral studies demonstrate the serious impact of homotransphobic discrimination on LGBT+ people, in tertiary education, in sports and in workplace (D’Augelli, Pilkington, Hershberger, 2002; Almeida et al., 2009; Di Giacomo et al., 2018; Taylor et al., 2013). This thesis consists of three essays on topics in sexual minorities discrimination and inclusion policies, in three different environments. Chapter 1 introduce the three essays and describes their main results. The first essay analyses a non-agonistic popular sports environment. It’s aim is twofold: firstly, it analyses the determinants of homotransphobic perceived discrimination; secondly, it explores, within the analysis of homotransphobia factors, the relevance of Allport's Contact Theory. From the empirical analysis we found that, among the determinants of homotransphobic perceived discrimination, there are individuals’ homosexual and bisexual orientation and a high level of education. Moreover, this study’s results reveal that among the factors related to homotransphobic behaviours and attitudes there are heterosexual orientation and male biological sex. Related to Contact Theory, our outcomes show that contacts with LGBT people typically reduce the probability of being homotransphobic and that being involved in projects aimed to put in contact LGBT with non-LGBT people reduces prejudice and discriminant attitudes. The second essay explores homotransphobia and policies inclusion in tertiary education. This study provides the first european index of LGBT+ inclusion for Universities, created using fuzzy logic techniques (Zadeh, 1965, 1988), that has a twofold aim: allow tertiary education institutions to assess their degree of gender inclusiveness with a shortcut assessment of the dimensions in LGBT+ inclusion that needs to be improved for reaching the aim of LGBT+ inclusion in tertiary education; Implement the proposed system to Italian universities that have promptly taken part to the survey thus making us in the condition to be able to show their achievements. With the support of six LGBT+ or ally students’ union, of four experts and of the National Conference of Equality Organs, we were able to evaluate the efficacy of the different practices in place and taking into account other. The third essay examines sexual orientation (and others) discrimination in workplaces, analysing European Working Condition Survey Data collected in 2015. We examine the relationship between discrimination’s predictors, stress, job satisfaction and moderating variables such as socio-economic position and age, showing that employees intersectionally discriminated are found to have more stress and less job satisfaction compared to their counterpart. Finally we realize a Mediation Model to detect and expound the mechanism underlies the relationship between an inclusive organizational model (the indipendent variable) and the employees' job satisfaction or their level of stress (the dependent variables), via the inclusion of sexual orientation (and others) discrimination variable (mediating variable) with the aim of clarifing the nature of the relationship between the independent and dependent variables. Each essay also explores LGBT+ inclusion best practices and suggests policy implications aimed to improve the inclusiveness of sports environments, workplaces and universities.

Full textPublic Administrations have been involved in a managerial transformation implemented above all through legislation; in fact, since the 1990s, many laws have stressed the times and the tools to realize in each Administration new paths of managerial innovation. At the base of the continuous legislative changes, still in progress, there is the need to implement a more efficient and effective use of public resources that are becoming more limited. In this regard, several scholars such as Anselmi (1995), Meneguzzo and Rebora (1990), Mussari (2002), Borgonovi (2005) have pointed out that the economic perspective is the necessary prerequisite to cut down the problem of public resources scarcity. In light of these considerations, the work is structured as follows. The first part aims at analyzing the “New Public Management” and the “Public Governance” which are the paradigms that have emphasized the adoption in the public sector of the principles of economy, transparency and accountability, encouraging a new relationship between Public Administrations and citizens. Considering the above mentioned aspects, in the second part the attention is focused on the change affecting public Universities which are analyzed as companies that present the corporate characteristics of a systemic coordination, autonomy and durability. In this context, the goal is to highlight how the various reforms have encouraged managerial direction of public Universities. To achieve this purpose, the chapter illustrates the reform of governance bodies, the new financing performance–based mechanisms and the transition from cash basis accounting to accrual basis accounting that have promoted, at least potentially, a new form of programming. Finally, the last part was furthered developed considering strategic planning and performance programming. To clarify this aims, literature review was examined to highlight what are the characteristics that performance plans should present to be considered managerial tools and the empirical research was conducted to find out their real programmatic value. In particular, this study was carried out about the Performance Integrated Plans published on the website by the small Universities characterized by a maximum of ten thousand enrolled students. At the end some critical reflections about managerial nature of the examined documents were carried out with the aim of enriching the scientific debate developed only in recent years. The topic analyzed is very recent, in fact the ANVUR has declared to issue new guidelines with the aim of supporting the Universities to make the Integrated Plan an economic document. So this event will certainly open the way for new future research prospects.
