La tesi estudia en profunditat el sistema de Creences, Representacions i Sabers (CRS) de tres estudiants del Grau de Mestre d’Educació Infantil de la Universitat de Barcelona sobre l’ensenyament i l’aprenentatge de la lectura i l’escriptura al llarg de la seva formació superior. L’objectiu principal ha estat fer un seguiment proper de l’evolució del sistema de CRS per veure si aquest sistema canvia o es manté estable durant els quatre anys que dura la formació universitària dels mestres. A la vegada, aquesta tesi, amb el seu disseny metodològic, respon a un buit científic identificat per nombrosos investigadors que tradicionalment han reclamat la necessitat de més estudis qualitatius longitudinals que aportin major informació sobre els processos de canvi. L’evolució de les creences dels estudiants del grau sobre l’alfabetització inicial encara no ha estat estudiat en profunditat des de la perspectiva del pensament dels professors. L’anàlisi del discurs de les tres entrevistes, realitzades en tres moments diferents de la formació (inici, mitjans i final), s’ha triangulat amb complecions de comparacions recollides a l’inici i final de la formació, així com amb l’anàlisi de seleccions de les memòries de pràctiques (recollides a mitjans i finals de la formació). A partir de l’anàlisi exhaustiu de les dades provinents de les tres eines de recollida s’ha inferit el sistema de CRS de cada estudiant en cada moment de la formació. Aquesta recollida sostinguda en el temps ha permès explorar l’evolució dels CRS. Els resultats mostren a la vegada estabilitat i canvi dels elements del CRS; una característica que ja havien identificat investigacions anteriors. A més, la complexitat del camp del pensament del professor posa de manifest la difícil tasca de rastrejar un element del sistema de CRS en el temps atesa la seva condició dinàmica. Malgrat la resistència al canvi, es pot confirmar que no són inamovibles, ja que s’han pogut identificar quatre patrons associats amb l’evolució. De major a menor canvi són: metamorfosi, ampliació, afinació i repetició. A més, l’estudi en profunditat ha permès entendre l’enfocament des del qual plantegen la relació entre l’ensenyament i l’aprenentatge, tot apel·lant a investigacions prèvies que posaven l’accent sobre el tipus de pràctiques docent dels mestres o el mètode que empren per ensenyar a llegir i a escriure, entre d’altres. S’han identificat elements en contradicció, alguns dels quals generen tensió. L’existència d’aquestes friccions emergeix com una dada rellevant, ja que la confrontació amb les pràctiques docents així com els processos reflexius han indiciat la major presència d’evolució en els elements del sistema de CRS.
This thesis focuses on the Beliefs, Assumptions and Knowledge (BAK) system of three pre service kindergarten teachers from the University of Barcelona regarding the teaching and learning of reading and writing during their higher education period. The main goal has been to track the evolution of the BAK system during the four years of the teachers degree in order to identify whether change takes place. At the same time, the methodological design of the thesis addresses a scientific gap identified by many researchers who have claimed for more longitudinal and qualitative studies in order to obtain more information about how change takes place. Moreover, the main topic of the thesis, the teachers’ beliefs regarding initial literacy has been poorly studied from the teachers' thought perspective. Interviews have been collected in three different moments during the teachers’ degree; at the beginning, at the middle and at the end. The analysis of the three interviews has been triangulated with two other data, sentence completions and practice reports. While sentence completion was collected at the beginning and at the end of the degree, practice reports were collected after the two periods of practices in the degree, at the middle and at the end. After the exhaustive analysis of the three different kinds of data, the BAK system has been inferred in each of the three moments of the data collection. This longitudinal design has allowed the exploration of the evolution of the BAK system. Results show both change and stability, a feature which had already been identified by some previous investigations. Furthermore, the complexity of the field makes it difficult to trace the elements due to their dynamic condition. Although it can be confirmed that they are resistant to change, four different phenomena have been identified, which means they are not immovable. Gradually, from the biggest to the smallest change they are: metamorphosis, addition, polishing and repetition. Also, the study has allowed us to understand the perspective from which they address the relation between teaching and learning, associated with previous investigations which put the emphasis on the teachers' practices methods used for teaching to read and write, among others. At the same time, contradiction elements have been identified, and only some of the themes generate tension. The existence of these elements in friction in the BAK system emerges as a relevant data because the confrontation with teacher practices and reflection processes have been powerful indicators for elements evolution

Abstract:
This research examines the American industrial city in the early twentieth century and the role of cultural institutions in the shift to an urban-oriented society. In-depth analysis of the University of Chicago’s architecture and planning traces how urban form emerged gradually as an assimilation of different traditions. It challenges a planning literature reliant on narrowly-prescribed categories and qualifies recent cultural histories that give a more nuanced portrayal of Progressive Era urban culture but which fail to consider the built environment directly. The research’s critical questions reconsider the role of nature within the city, the definition of the urban public, and the intertwining of commerce and civic culture. Its methodology uses original analytic drawings which trace how the University expanded over time, united with consideration of previously-unexplored written and visual archives. This combination of analytic mapping and archival investigation on one institution reveals new insights into how the industrial city was shaped as a whole. The findings identify paradoxes in the University’s planning, which promoted the dynamism of the modern city while evoking the image of bucolic Oxbridge. These contradictory impulses were enhanced by the University’s location on the Midway Plaisance, a public boulevard typifying the urban/rural hybridity of Chicago’s park system. The result was an urbanised nature, or the charged proximity of urban density and pastoral green space. Disputing the perceived eclipse of the nineteenth-century Parks movement, the term ‘urbanised nature’ suggests how earlier concern for naturalistic landscape was fused with the ideals of twentieth-century Progressivism. The research also contests previous emphasis on the exclusionary cultural practices of this period, as the heterogeneous development of the University’s Collegiate Gothic campus reveals a struggle to balance commercial interests, pastoral imagery, and monumental urban display. More broadly, this research sheds new light on the contradictions that shaped the American city in the early twentieth century—an urban culture driven by the contentious relationship between industrial capitalism and civic institutions, a public realm animated by mass appeal and elite tradition, and a spatial order drawn from urban and rural models.

The in vitro activity of twelve cephalosporins (first generation: Cephalothin, Cefazolin; second generation: Cefoxitin, Cefamandole, Cefuroxime, Cedonicid; third generation: Ceftazidime, Ceftizoxime, Cefotaxime, Cefoperazone, Ceftriaxone, Moxalactam) were studied against 146 strains of Gram negative bacilli belonging to the following families: Enterobacteriaceae Proteus vulgarius (2), P. mirabilis (5), Providencia stuartti (6), P. alkalifaciens (5), Morganella morganii (16), Serratia marcescens (14), Enterobacter cloacae (17), E. aerogenes (9), Kluyvera ascorbata (3), Citrobacter freundii (14), C. diversus (3), C. amalonaticus (1), Yersinia intermedia (1), Y. enterocolitica (2); Pseudomonadaceae: Pseudomonas aeruginosa (31), P. fluorescens (3); Neisseriacaee: Acinetobacter anitratus (3), Acinetobacter lwoffi (1); and Vibrionaceae: Aeromonas hydrophilia (4), Plesiomonas shigelloides (1), Campylobacter jejuni (5)). This investigation, which studied the activity of all the mentioned cephalosporins against each strain, suggests that resistance to the third generation cephalosporins has already emerged in such species as S. marcescens, E. cloacae, E. aerogenes, C. freundii, P. aeruginosa, P. fluorescens, A. anitratus, A. lwoffi, and Campylobacter jejuni. This resistance is most pronounced in Enterobacter spp., Serratia marcescens, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The second generation cephalosporins, particularly Cefoxitin and perhaps Cefuroxime, are chief inducers of resistance in Enterobacter and Serratia. In the pseudomonads difference mechanisms seem to operate than those taking place in Enterobacter-Serratia. The study also shows that resistance is not a generic characteristic in Proteus, Providencia, or Citrobacter but rather specific. Some aspects of mechanisms of resistance to cephalosporins are discussed. Concern is here indicated that at least in certain groups of bacteria, the use of the second generation cephalosporins may lead to emergence of resistance to the third generation group.

Abstract:
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an autosomal recessive disorder affecting 70,000 individuals worldwide. This disease is characterized by the buildup of mucus in the airways leading to chronic lung infections resulting in pulmonary failure and death in 95% of CF patients. Routine surveillance of CF pathogens using traditional microbiology culture guides management and treatment of CF patients. Molecular profiling studies have revealed emerging pathogens that may play a role in CF lung disease by either directly causing infection or upregulating the virulence factors of classic CF pathogens, such as P. aeruginosa; however, routine CF culture protocols have not been modified to detect these organisms. The goal of this study was to expand the data relevant to the use of microbiology cultures for the management and treatment of CF patients at Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center (VCUMC) by directly selecting for emerging CF pathogens in culture. This was accomplished by developing,optimizing, and implementing an agar to select for colistin-resistant non-fermenting Gram- negative rods (NF GNRS). In addition, McKay agar and anaerobic media were utilized to recover members of the Streptococcus anginosus group (SAG) and anaerobes in CF respiratory samples. The prevalences of SAG, anaerobes, and colistin-resistant NF GNRs recovered on study media from 75 adult and pediatric CF patients at VCUMC were 17.33%, 41.33%, and 4% respectively. Approximately 62% of patients culture-positive for SAG were also infected with P. aeruginosa and 53.8% of SAG recovered in culture were from CF patients experiencing PE. These findings further support the claim that interspecies interactions among emerging and classic CF pathogens may result in periods of clinical instability or PE. Twenty-eight of the 75 patients were culture-positive for Veillonella species, with the majority of samples collected during a period of surveillance. Four colistin-resistant NF GNRs were isolated on the study media alone. The selective nature of the study media prevented the mixed respiratory flora and classic CF pathogens from overgrowing and obscuring the growth of these colistin-resistant NF GNRs. The presence and role of emerging pathogens in the CF patient population at VCUMC warrants further investigation; therefore, the routine culture protocol needs to be revised to recover and select for those organisms thought to play a role in PE and lung function decline.

Background: Gram-negative resistance is a growing problem worldwide. It is generally believed that rates of resistant bacteria within a hospital are a function of antibiotic use, resistant organisms brought into the hospital, infection control efforts, and underlying severity of patient illness. The relative contribution of each to a particular resistance phenotype is unclear. P. aeruginosa is responsible for many hospital acquired infections and it may become resistant to carbapenems. In addition, newer threats to the future utility of the carbapenems are carbapenemase-producing K. pneumoniae Purpose: To determine if there is an association between the volume and composition of antibiotic use, geography, severity of illness and rates of carbapenem-resistant P. aeruginosa and K. pneumoniae. Methods: This is a retrospective ecological longitudinal investigation within the University HealthSystem Consortium affiliated academic medical centers. Antibiotic use data between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2009 were obtained from billing records and reported as days of therapy per 1000 patient days (DOT/1000 PD), in addition to hospital characteristics (e.g. geographical location, bed size, case mix index). “Whole house” antibiograms were obtained to determine rates and proportions of carbapenem-resistant P. aeruginosa (CR-PA) and carbapenem resistant K. pneumoniae (CR-KP). Also, CR-KP isolation was generated as a binary outcome. Generalized estimating equations (GEE) were used to model CR-KP and CR-PA. Results: CR-KP rates (1000PDs) increased from 0.07 in 2006 to 0.15 in 2009 (P= 0.0118) and CR-KP proportions increased from 1.3% in 2006 to 3.1% in 2009 (0.0003) within 40 hospitals over 2006-2009. However, CR-PA rates and proportions were stable over the same period. Geographical location, carbapenems use, and antipseudomonal penicillins use were significantly associated with CR-KP isolation. Thus, for every ten DOT/1000 PDs increase in carbapenem use, the odds of CR-KP isolation increased by 42% (P=0.0149). In contrast, for every ten DOT/1000 PDs increase in antipseudomonal penicillin use, the odds of CR-KP isolation decreased by 14%. However, there was no significant model to explain CR-PA rates and proportions. Conclusion: Carbapenems, antipseudomonal penicillins, and geographical location were identified as risk factors associated with CR-KP isolation. These findings emphasize the challenges associated with the treatment of multidrug- gram-negative bacteria.

Abstract:
A search of the literature revealed few references to the normal enteric flora of non-human vertebrates in general and the llama, Lama glama, in particular. The bacteriologic flora of the llama as a research project was suggested by my major professor, Dr. Fuad M. Nahhas, after it was brought to his attention by one of his assistants in the microbiology department of Dameron Hospital (Stockton, CA) that her pet llama was suffering from diarrhea. Fecal material from the llama was cultured and Yersinia enterocolitica was recovered. At the same time normal bacterial flora resembling those isolated from human material were also found. In seeking a research project I thought a bacteriologic examination of fecal material from llamas would be of some interest. A search of the literature revealed a great deal of information about parasitic infections of the llama, particularly by South American parasitologists and veterinarians,. but little information on the bacteriologic flora. Most of the published reports discuss enteric pathogens and enteric diseases (Fowler, 1989). Equally scarce are reports on the antibiotic pattern of such isolates; most reports on antimicrobial activity are limited to determining which drugs are effective in the treatment of a particular infection (Timoney et al, 1988). In contrast with this, Gram negative isolates from human intestinal material are well known and their antibiograms well documented in the literature as well as in unpublished hospital records. The use of antibiotics, discriminately or indiscriminately, in the treatment of human infections and the addition of antibiotics, especially tetracycline, to animal feeds to promote growth have led to the emergence··of resistant strains among these bacteria. To what extent such resistance exists in, has crossed over to, or has been exchanged among the intestinal isolates of humans and other vertebrates is not known. The objective of this study is, therefore, twofold: 1) to conduct a survey of the Gram negative aerobic intestinal bacterial flora of llamas to determine what species are present and their relative abundance; 2) to compare their biochemical (biotypes) and antibiotic patterns (antibiogram) with isolates from other animals and humans where information is available.

Abstract:
O presente estudo tem como tema as solenidades de colação de grau na Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) no período de 1992 a 2012 e, como foco as memórias das colações de grau dos cursos de Comunicação Social, Enfermagem e Engenharia, registradas através de depoimentos de graduados nos respectivos cursos e de membros da comunidade universitária que participaram da gestão acadêmica no recorte indicado desta investigação. Buscou-se investigar a trajetória do cerimonial, seus aspectos simbólicos e ritualísticos, inseridos aos contextos históricos, sociais e acadêmico-institucionais do referido período, bem como o papel dos agentes internos e externos nas prováveis mudanças ocorridas nas solenidades. O trabalho se insere na linha de pesquisa Memória, Cultura e Identidade e nos campos de estudos em memória social, trabalhando com conceitos de rito e cerimonial. O estudo, de natureza qualitativa, adotou a metodologia da história oral. O resultado da investigação foi apresentado em cinco capítulos, sendo os dois primeiros de caráter introdutório ao tema e de apresentação do cenário universitário no qual se procede à pesquisa e os três últimos capítulos apresentaram o contexto acadêmico e o cenário do cerimonial universitário e das colações de grau. Na conclusão, fez-se reflexão sobre o percurso do cerimonial das colações de grau, a cultura acadêmica e os testemunhos dos colaboradores. Para atingir as demandas de um mestrado profissional foi produzido um e-book com a memória das solenidades de colações de grau da UFRGS no período de 1992 a 2012.
This work aims at analyzing the graduation ceremonies that took place from 1992 to 2012 at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS) and we focus on the memories about the ceremonies in Social Communication, Nursing and Engineering experienced by students who have graduated and by academic staff who worked at the University within that period of time. We have investigated the history of ceremonial and its symbolic and ritualistic aspects according to different social, historical and institution-related events within that time, as well as the role of internal and external motivations for possible changes in the graduation ceremonies’ rites. This work is part of the research line Memory, Culture and Identity and relates to the field of social memory, dealing with the concepts of rite and ceremonial. The study, which has a qualitative approach, uses the methodology of oral history. The results of the investigation have been presented in five chapters, the first two introducing the subject and presenting the academic context and the setting for university ceremonial and graduation ceremonies. In our conclusion, we present a reflection on the pathways of ceremonial for graduation ceremonies, academic culture and the testimony of the contributors. In order to meet the requirements of a professional master’s course, we have written an e-book with the memories about the graduation ceremonies that took place from 1992 to 2012 at UFRGS.

A major concern of organizations today is the evaluation of customer’s satisfaction concerning the provision of their services. Among them there is the provision of educational services in higher education, whether in the private or public sphere. There are some quality assessment models in specialized literature which include Gap’s model, Servqual scale, Servperf scale and Hedperf model. The latter was precisely conceived to assess the quality of services provided by Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). In this context, the practice of university extension developed by HEIs is an interdisciplinary, educational, cultural, scientific and political process that promotes transformative interaction between universities and other sectors of the society. Among the extension actions of the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) there are the Casas de Cultura Estrangeira CCE (Foreign Culture Houses), perhaps the greatest foreign language teaching project among the Federal Institutions of Higher Education in Brazil. Thereby, this study aims to analyze the perception of the image of the foreign cultural Houses (CCE) of the UFC by comparing the degree of expectation and satisfaction of their basic language course students. For so, it was used an adaptation of the higher education quality assessment model called HEdPERF in the light of the five dimensions of quality (academic and non-academic aspects, reputation, program content and access). The research can be defined as a case study survey, with descriptive approach and structured questionnaires, adapted from the aforementioned model. For the results analyzes of were applied the classical statistical methods: exploratory data analysis and statistical inference, using the non-parametric hypothesis testing (Wilcoxon and Kruskal Wallis). The results show that in a general analysis, students of the Foreign Culture Houses have a satisfactory picture of the foreign language basic courses. And that the dimension which deals with academic aspects was the only one that got positive difference (greater satisfaction than the expectation) between the dimensions analyzed. The results of the comparative analysis between the CCEs pointed out that the German Culture House has, in most dimensions, higher degree of satisfaction to the level of expectation, which does not occur in the other houses.
Uma das maiores preocupações das organizações atuais consiste na avaliação da satisfação dos seus clientes em relação à prestação de seus serviços. Dentre elas encontra-se a prestação dos serviços educacionais de ensino superior, independentemente de estarem na esfera privada ou pública. Na literatura, encontram-se alguns modelos para avaliar a qualidade dos serviços, dentre os quais, destacam-se o modelo Gap’s, a escala Servqual, a escala Servperf e o modelo Hedperf, este último concebido especificamente para avaliação da qualidade dos serviços prestados pelas Instituições de Ensino Superior (IES). Nesse contexto, a prática da extensão universitária é um processo interdisciplinar, educativo, cultural, científico e político que promove a interação transformadora entre Universidade e outros setores da sociedade. Dentre as ações de extensão da Universidade Federal do Ceará (UFC) destacam-se as ‘Casas de Cultura Estrangeira’, talvez o maior projeto de ensino de língua estrangeira entre as Instituições Federais de Ensino Superior no Brasil. Desse modo, o presente estudo tem por objetivo analisar a percepção da imagem das Casas de Cultura Estrangeiras (CCE) da UFC por meio da comparação entre o grau de expectativa e satisfação de seus alunos dos cursos básicos de língua. Os resultados obtidos revelam que os alunos das Casas de Cultura Estrangeira possuem uma imagem satisfatória dos cursos básicos de língua estrangeira e que numa análise geral a dimensão que trata dos ‘aspectos acadêmicos’ foi a única que obteve diferença positiva (satisfação maior que a expectativa) entre as dimensões analisadas. Os resultados da análise comparativa entre as CCE apontam que a Casa de Cultura Alemã apresenta, na maioria das dimensões, grau de satisfação superior ao grau de expectativa, o que não ocorre nas demais Casas.

Aquesta tesis informa de la implementació d’un projecte de portafoli electrònic en els estudis de Grau d’Educació Infantil de la Universitat de las Illes Balears a la seu d’Eivissa. Durant els quatre cursos de la seva formació, l’alumnat documenta el seu procés d’aprenentatge usant eines de la Web 2.0 com blocs per la construcció del seu eportafoli i, una gran varietat d’altres eines per la construcció d’artefactes. La investigació sobre aquest projecte se centra en els dos primers cursos de la seva implementació experimental. La revisió de la literatura compren el tema de la Web 2.0 i els eportafolis. Les dades obtingudes mostren l’evolució positiva de la quantitat i qualitat del treball de l’alumnat en els seus eportafolis. Les entrevistes mostren les percepcions d’alumnat i professorat sobre els eportafolis i el rol de la tecnologia en l’educació. Les dades recollides fan palès una major dificultat en el procés de reflexió que no en l’ús de la tecnologia. Finalment, les conclusions també destaquen la relació de l’eportafoli i el PLE i, les possibilitats i limitacions de la Web 2.0 per la construcció d’ eportafolis i per l’ampliacó del PLE.
Esta tesis informa de la implementación de un proyecto de portafolio electrónico en los estudios de Grado de Educación Infantil de la Universidad de las Islas Baleares en la sede de Ibiza. Durante los cuatro cursos de su formación, el alumnado documenta su proceso de aprendizaje usando herramienta de la Web 2.0 como blogs para la construcción de su eportafolio y una gran variedad de herramientas para la construcción de artefactos. La investigación sobre este proyecto se centra en los dos primeros cursos de su implementación experimental. La revisión de la literatura comprende el tema de la Web 2.0 y los eportafolios. Los datos obtenidos muestran la evolución positiva de la cantidad y calidad del trabajo del alumnado en sus eportafolios. Las entrevistas muestran las percepciones de alumnado y profesorado sobre los eportafolios y el rol de la tecnología en la educación. Los datos recogidos también muestran mayor dificultad en el proceso de reflexión que en el uso de la tecnología. Finalmente, las conclusiones también destacan la relación entre el eportafolio y el PLE así como las posibilidades y limitaciones de la Web 2.0 para la construcción de eportafolios.
This thesis presents the implementation, analysis and evaluation of an electronic portfolio project in Teacher Education at the local branch of the Balearic Islands University in Ibiza. During their four-year programme, students are asked to document learning using Web 2.0 tools such as blogs for the construction of their eportfolio site and a wide range of tools for the construction of artefacts. The research on this project is focused on the first two school years of the experimental implementation. The literature review covers both Web 2.0 and portfolio topics. Data collected evidence the positive evolution of quantity and quality of students’ performance on their eportfolio. Interviews with students and lecturers show their perceptions on eportfolios and the role of technology in education. Furthermore, data collected indicate more difficulties in the reflection process than in the use of technology. Finally, conclusions also highlight the close relationship between eportfolio and PLE and, the affordances and barriers of Web 2.0 for the construction of eportfolios.

This research has as its theoretical and methodological assumptions (1) the Narrative Inquiry (CLANDININ; CONNELLY, 2011), (2) the Systemic Functional Grammar (HALLIDAY, 1985, 1994; THOMPSON, 2002; EGGINS, 1994; HALLIDAY; MATTHIESSEN, 2004) and (3) the English for Specific Purposes Approach (ESP - HUTCHINSON; WATERS, 1987; CELANI, 2005; RAMOS, 2005), and its overall objective is to survey the meanings construed by the participants who are ESP practitioners and have not received a specific education to teach this approach at their undergraduation. The field texts and therefore the analises were divided into two distinct groups: the first with data generated from a questionnaire applied to nine professors from a federal university in the northeast of Brazil, which contains open and closed questions about their training and their experiences in teaching ESP; the second group, focusing this time on the experiences of three professors from the first group who were still teaching ESP, with data generated from interviews with these participants in addition to the data generated from their autobiographies and from the researcher?s as well. The computational tool WordSmith Tools 6.0 (SCOTT, 2012) was used to select, organize, and quantify data to be analyzed in the first group of texts, identifying the types of Processes and Participants through the Transitivity System (HALLIDAY; MATTHIESSEN, 2004). The Processes which were more used by the professors in the questionnaire were the Material, followed by the Relational and then the Mental ones, indicating that most professors reported their actions related to the teaching of ESP, rated or evaluated the approach, their training to teach it and their experiences, hence, rarely showing their thoughts and emotions about teaching ESP. Most of the nine professors say they carry out needs analysis, but not all do it according to the authors cited by them or the ones that are considered a reference in this area, such as the ones used in this research as reference. Similarly, their definitions and conceptions of ESP, in most cases, differed from these authors. All the professors claim not having had specific education to teach ESP at the undergraduation. When examining the stories of the four teachers, in the second group of the field texts, based on meaning composition according to Ely, Vinz, Downing and Anzul (2001), it was revealed that the kind of knowledge they report using when they teach ESP is related to their Personal Practical Knowledge and their Professional Knowledge (ELBAZ, 1983; CLANDININ, 1988). In their autobiographies, metaphors were also identified and they represent their concepts of teaching and being a teacher. Through this research, we hope to contribute to the understanding of what teaching ESP might mean for professors in the researched context and also to the continuing education of ESP practitioners, as well as to a review of the curricula in the English language undergraduate courses and of the role of ESP in the training of these professionals
A presente pesquisa tem como pressupostos te?rico-metodol?gicos (1) a Pesquisa Narrativa (PN CLANDININ; CONNELLY, 2011), (2) a Gram?tica Sist?mico-Funcional (GSF HALLIDAY, 1985, 1994; THOMPSON, 2002; EGGINS, 1994; HALLIDAY; MATTHIESSEN, 2004) e (3) a abordagem de ensino de Ingl?s para Fins Espec?ficos (IFE HUTCHINSON; WATERS, 1987; CELANI, 2005; RAMOS, 2005), com o objetivo geral de fazer um levantamento dos sentidos constru?dos pelos professores participantes sobre o IFE, a forma??o espec?fica que receberam para ministr?-lo e a sua experi?ncia em ensin?-lo no n?vel superior. Os textos de campo e, por conseguinte, as an?lises, foram organizados em dois grupos distintos: o primeiro com dados gerados a partir de um question?rio aplicado a nove professores de uma institui??o p?blica no nordeste brasileiro, contendo perguntas abertas e fechadas a respeito de sua forma??o e de suas experi?ncias em ministrar a disciplina de Ingl?s Instrumental e o segundo grupo, a partir do enfoque nas experi?ncias de tr?s professoras do primeiro grupo que continuavam ensinando IFE, com dados gerados por entrevistas com essas participantes e por suas autobiografias, al?m dos dados gerados pela autobiografia da pr?pria pesquisadora, tamb?m participante da pesquisa. Foi usada a ferramenta computacional WordSmith Tools 6.0 (SCOTT, 2012) para selecionar, organizar e quantificar os dados a serem analisados no primeiro grupo de textos, identificando-se os tipos de Processos e os Participantes, pelo Sistema de Transitividade (HALLIDAY; MATTHIESSEN, 2004), sendo que os Processos mais usados pelos professores no question?rio foram os Materiais, seguidos dos Relacionais e em terceiro lugar os Mentais, indicando que a maioria relatou mais suas a??es com rela??o ao ensino de IFE, classificou ou definiu a abordagem, sua forma??o e suas experi?ncias do que demonstrou seus pensamentos e emo??es a respeito de ensinar IFE. A maioria dos nove professores afirma fazer a an?lise de necessidades, mas nem todos a fazem de acordo com o que estabelecem os autores por eles citados ou outros autores considerados refer?ncia nessa ?rea, tais como os que usamos nesta pesquisa. Do mesmo modo, suas defini??es e concep??es sobre IFE, na maioria das vezes, diferem das desses autores. Todos os professores participantes alegam n?o ter tido forma??o espec?fica para ensinar IFE na licenciatura. Ao analisar os relatos das quatro professoras do segundo grupo de textos de campo, com base na composi??o de sentidos segundo Ely, Vinz, Downing e Anzul (2001), percebeu-se que o tipo de conhecimento que estas referem usar para ministrar IFE est? relacionado ao Conhecimento Pr?tico Pessoal e ao Conhecimento Profissional (ELBAZ, 1983; CLANDININ, 1988). La tecnologia digital ha revolucionat pràcticament tots els àmbits de la vida humana, permetent l’accés i l’exploració de nous coneixements i comportant, com tot canvi profund, millores, problemes, dificultats, oportunitats. En aquesta investigació analitzem l’impacte de la mateixa al món educatiu en general i en la música en particular. El nostre objectiu és conèixer quines competències digitals musicals són necessàries i com es desenvolupa la seva didàctica als estudis de grau de primària amb menció en educació musical a les universitats catalanes. Per aconseguir-ho hem portat a terme un estudi basat en l’anàlisi documental, qüestionaris als alumnes i professors, enquestes per conèixer el context i entrevistes a experts externs. Els resultats obtinguts indiquen que, majoritàriament, a les universitats s’adquireix i s’aprofundeix coneixement, però es fa poca creació de nou coneixement en els àmbits estudiats. També ha quedat palès que al món educatiu li cal una revolució que adeqüi els mètodes i les eines docents a la societat xarxa, atorgui més protagonisme i experiències als alumnes i que fonamenti la tasca educativa en els verbs crear i compartir.
La tecnología digital ha revolucionado prácticamente todos los ámbitos de la vida humana, permitiendo el acceso y la exploración de nuevos conocimientos y comportando, como todo cambio profundo, mejoras, problemas, dificultades, oportunidades. En esta investigación analizamos el impacto de la misma en el mundo educativo en general y en la música en particular. Nuestro objetivo es conocer qué competencias digitales musicales son necesarias y cómo se desarrolla su didáctica en los estudios de grado de primaria con mención en educación musical en las universidades catalanas. Para ello hemos llevado a cabo un estudio basado en el análisis documental, cuestionarios a los alumnos y profesores, encuestas para conocer el contexto y entrevistas a expertos externos. Los resultados obtenidos indican que, mayoritariamente, en las universidades se adquiere y se profundiza conocimiento, pero se hace poca creación de nuevo conocimiento en los ámbitos estudiados. También ha quedado claro que el mundo educativo necesita una revolución que adecue los métodos y las herramientas docentes en la sociedad red, otorgue más protagonismo y experiencias a los alumnos y que fundamente la labor educativa en los verbos crear y compartir.
The digital technology has revolutionized almost every field of human life, allowing the access and the exploration of new knowledge and implying, like any deep change, improvements, problems, difficulties, opportunities. In this investigation we analyse the impact of the digital technology in educational world in general and music in particular. Our purpose is to know which digital musical competences are necessary and how their didactics is developed in the bachelor’s degrees in primary education with musical education specialisation at Catalan universities. To achieve this objective, we have carried through with a study based on documental analysis, questionnaires to students and teachers, surveys in order to know the context and interviews with external experts. The final results indicate that in most universities students acquire and deepen their knowledge but little new knowledge creation is done in the areas studied. Also it has become clear that the educational world needs a revolution to adapt teaching methods and tools to the network society, to give more importance and experiences to students and to base the educational task on verbs like create and share.

This work is about a quantitative research, having as objective to analyze the young black in the region north of the city of São Paulo, searching to understand the difficulties found for these in the access the university. The biggest difficulty pointed for the participants is the lack of financial resources, making with that these young has that to dedicate to the work, taking them not to get it good notes, for the lack of time to the study, pointed for them also as the second difficulty with respect to the access to superior education. The research discloses that practically the half of the young blacks has interest in the continuity of the studies, exactly not having financial incentives on the part of familiar, resources and social support. The study it points the necessity of the creation of Affirmative Politics that reach the black and poor white in Secondary Education.
Esta pesquisa tem por objetivo analisar jovens negros e negras, buscando compreender as dificuldades encontradas por jovens negros e negras no acesso aos estudos em nível superior. A maior dificuldade apontada pelos participantes é a falta de recursos financeiros, fazendo com que estes jovens tenham que se dedicar ao trabalho, levando-os a não obterem boas notas, pela falta de tempo ao estudo, apontada por eles também como a segunda dificuldade para o acesso ao ensino superior. A pesquisa revela que praticamente a metade dos jovens negros e negras têm interesse na continuidade dos estudos, mesmo não tendo incentivos por parte de familiares, recursos financeiros e apoio social. O estudo aponta a necessidade da criação de Políticas Afirmativas que atingem o negro e branco pobre no Ensino Médio.

Aquesta tesi estudia la implementació del contracte pedagògic com a una eina d'aprenentatge, dins de dues metodologies utilitzades en el grau d'infermeria que s'imparteix al Campus Docent Sant Joan de Déu, tant des de la perspectiva de l'estudiant com del tutor, per conèixer quin és el seu constructe mental al respecte del concepte "contracte pedagògic", "cas integrat" i "Pla d'Acció Tutorial", com s'estan formalitzant els pactes en el desenvolupament de les metodologies en l'actualitat, quines són les propostes de millora segons estudiants i tutors i finalment quines característiques hauria de tenir el model de "contracte pedagògic" del Campus Docent Sant Joan de Déu. El "cas integrar és una metodologia grupal basada en l'ABP que es desenvolupa en el segon i quart semestre del grau en infermeria i el "pla d'acció tutorial" és una metodologia individual en la que segons el model del Campus Docent, la primera setmana del primer curs s'assigna a cada estudiant un tutor i aquest tutor l'acompanya al llarg dels quatre anys de durada dels estudis, tutoritzant també la Carpeta d'Aprenentatge i el Treball fi de grau. En aquesta recerca hem utilitzat metodologia quantitativa i qualitativa dins d'un disseny ex-post-facto i, com a mètode per a obtenir informació, hem utilitzat el lingüístic (qüestionaris, entrevistes semi-estructurades i anàlisi documental). Les tècniques d'anàlisi de resultats han estat tècniques estadístiques multivariants per a esbrinar nuclis representacionals dels estudiants en referència als tres conceptes estudiats "contracte pedagògic", "cas integrat" i "Pla d'Acció Tutorial" i anàlisi de contingut i de discurs pel que fa a les entrevistes realitzades a estudiants i tutors. Un cop administrats els qüestionaris, s'ha procedit a la seva tabulació informàtica en el suport: DTM-VIC 5.6 per a les respostes treballades amb la tècnica d'Associació Lliure de Paraules (ALP). El contingut de les entrevistes s'ha treballat amb programa IRaMuTeC de tractament textual obtenint tres formes diferents de representació a partir de tres formes d'anàlisi diferenciats: classificació descendent jeràrquica (CDJ), anàlisi factorial de correspondències (AFC) i anàlisi de similituds (ADS). Dels resultats obtinguts es desprenen diferents propostes de millora vinculades a les dues metodologies estudiades "cas integrat" i "pla d'acció tutorial". Aquestes propostes es presenten en un format possibilista des de la perspectiva de gestió, per tal de ser implementades en un termini de temps determinat. Es constata també que per part dels tutors existeix una preocupació per la formalització dels pactes que necessàriament s’estableixen en el desenvolupament de les metodologies que actualment es resolen amb iniciatives individuals de cada tutor. Existeix un consens respecte a aquells valors i comportaments que estudiants i tutors han de treballar perquè les metodologies funcionin i queda demostrat que els tutors practiquen amb l’exemple els valors institucionals perquè els alumnes narren haver-los rebut. Finalment s’estableixen els elements del model de ”contracte pedagògic” del Campus Docent Sant Joan de Déu, que entén el contracte pedagògic com una eina pensada dins del continum: dissenyar- negociar- pactar- complir- redissenyar és a dir un pacte viu que es dissenya i es trenca a mesura que l’estudiant va adquirint les competències incloses en el contracte. A més es proposa dins de l’espai de la simulació, tant utilitzat en l’àmbit de les ciències de la salut, la formalització del contracte pedagògic mitjançant la signatura del mateix per ambdues parts.
This thesis examines the implementation of the Learning Contract as a pedagogical tool, within two methodologies used in the nursing degree taught at Sant Joan de Deu Campus, both from the student's and the tutor's perspective. We aim to know what their mental construct is on the concepts of "learning contract", "integrated case" and "Tutorial Action Plan"; how agreements are being reached in the development of methodologies today; what the improvement proposals suggested by students and tutors are; and finally what features should the model of "learning contract" of Sant Joan de Deu Campus have. In this research, we have used the combination and completion of quantitative and qualitative methodologies in an ex-post-facto design. As a method to obtain information, we have used questionnaires, semi-structured interviews and documentary analysis. Once questionnaires had been passed, we proceeded to their computing tabulation on the DTM-VIC 5.6 platform for the answers worked on the technique of Free Association of Words. We have worked on the content of the interviews using the IRaMuTeC textual data analysis program. As a main result, we established elements of the model of "learning contract" of the Campus Sant Joan de Deu, which understands the contract as a pedagogical tool designed within the continuum: desing-negociate-agree-fulfill-redesign — that is, a living agreement that is designed and broken as the student acquires the skills included in the contract. Besides, it is proposed within the space of simulation — so widely used in the field of health sciences — by means of a contract signed by both parts.

Microbial pathogens play an important role in the food industry where they could cause disease and subsequently significant economic losses. Limited information is available on the situation with regard to Listeria in food products in South Africa. However, much research is being done in the rest of the world on Listeria indicating serious problems as a result of resistance development against various antimicrobial agents, including the organic acids. It is hypothesised that the situation with regard to resistance development may be more serious than generally admitted. Isolation of 200 different food samples was done by using a slightly modified EN ISO 11290-1/A1:2004 standard method. Identification of presumptive positive colonies was confirmed as Listeria by API (Analytical profile index) Listeria. API positive cultures were subjected to 16S rDNA sequencing to compare and confirm identification. Isolates and standard strains were screened for resistance to food preservatives such as organic acids and antibiotics used in the current treatment regime for Listeria infections. The organisms evaluated included isolated strains namely Listeria monocytogenes, Listeria welshimeri, Listeria innocua and their corresponding ATCC (American type culture colletion) strains. An agar dilution method as described by the Clinical and Laboratory Standard Institute (CLSI) was used to determine the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 11 antibiotics and 13 organic acids and salts for all the isolates. Overall antibiotic susceptibility patterns of all the isolates indicated high level susceptibility to all the antibiotics tested. Susceptibility to all the organic acids was notably reduced at pH 7 in all the isolates and control strains. Eight highly susceptible strains were selected for induction and represented each of the species isolated. These isolates were exposed to increasing concentrations of three antibiotics and three organic acids. MICs were again determined for all the induced strains for five antibiotics and three organic acids. Proteins extracted from the induced strains were separated on discontinuous SDS-PAGE slab gels to generate total protein profiles. Notable variations were observed in MICs, although induction with antibiotics as well as organic acids did not result in general resistance development. However, evidence was provided that continuous exposure to antimicrobial agents may cause Listeria spp. to develop resistance to different antimicrobial agents. Further research and in depth studies on mechanisms involved in the development of resistance to food preservatives would, therefore, be required. Finally, it is concluded that Listeria monocytogenes may be a possible threat in the Central South African food industry, which deserves more attention. The situation may actually pose a problem that is overseen, because only a small percentage of people that get sick from food, would seek medical advice.

Abstract:
This thesis analyzes ethnics and gender inequalities in access to the labor market during the Great Recession in Spain. The first article illustrates the probabilities of unemployed people to get a job depending on gender, age, level of studies, care responsibilities and level of unemployment in the region of residence. The analytical sample is drawn from the first quarter of the Labor Force Survey for the period 2006-2016. Thanks to these data, access to employment is studied both in the moments before and after the socioeconomic crisis of 2008, taking into account the effect of fatherhood and motherhood on the labor trajectories of men and women. The results show that despite the high destruction of Inasculinized jobs, women had worse employability. In addition, it is shown that despite the fact that a higher educational level ensures better job opportunities for men and women, men ali,vays have more employability. Third, the results lend support to the hypothesis of a motherhood penalty and husband Premia in the access to the labour market. Finally, it establishes that people with foreign nationality are more likely to find a job than people with Spanish nationality. The second article of the thesis analyzes the social integration of the immigrant population and examines to what extent the changes in the economic cycle have coincided with a reconfiguration of the labor market in Spain and with a modification in the integration of foreigners. The selected data are the second quarters of the Labor Force Survey for the 2006-2016 period. The results provide support for the ethnostratification theory, showing a very unequal distribution of immigrants in the socio-occupational structure according to their origin. While immigrants from enricher countries are better located in the occupational structure, those from impoverished countries are over-represented in the lower socio-occupational classes. Although in certain cases, the post-crisis period has meant an improvement in the occupational condition of some groups, the situation is quite stable for other migrants, who seem to be stuck in a time warp. Finally, it is shown that the socio-economic recovery from 2014 only benefited the integration of people with Spanish nationality. The third and last article of the thesis analyses the transitions from the university to the labour market in Spain. Using a sample of 23,885 university graduates in 2009, I assess the probabilities of obtain a job in 2014. The results show that, even though a greater educational investment ensures better job opportunities for graduates, the probabilities of ending up over-educated are higher, especially for women. In addition, I found that graduates from health care and engineering fields of studies are more likely to obtain a job and a quality job than those from scientific, social sciences and humanities careers. Finally, it is found that people from sex-atypical field of studies (i.e. women in masculinized and men in feminized careers) are less likely to obtain a job or a quality job, especially women from masculinized fields of studies.
Esta tesis analiza las desigualdades de étnicas y de género en el acceso al mercado de trabajo durante el periodo de la Gran Recesión. El primer artículo estudia las probabilidades que tienen las personas desempleadas de acceder al mercado de trabajo. Los datos empleados para el artículo provienen del primer trimestre de la Encuesta de Población Activa para el periodo 2006-2016. Estos datos permiten estudiar el acceso al empleo tanto en los momentos previos como en los posteriores a la crisis socioeconómica surgida en 2008 y el efecto de las responsabilidades familiares sobre las trayectorias laborales de hombres y mujeres. Los resultados establecen que a pesar de la alta destrucción de empleo masculino consecuencia de la crisis, las mujeres han tenido peores oportunidades de acceder al trabajo ren-žunerado en comparación con sus coetáneos varones. Asimismo, se demuestra que a pesar de que un mayor nivel educativo asegura unas mejores oportunidades laborales para hombres y mujeres, los hombres tienen siempre más opciones de acceder al mercado laboral. En tercer lugar, este artículo confirma la "penalización a la maternidad" —penalización laboral sufrida por las mujeres cuando tienen hijos— y del "premio a la paternidad" —asociación positiva entre la paternidad y la probabilidad de encontrar un empleo—. Finalmente, establece que las personas con nacionalidad extranjera tienen más probabilidades de encontrar un empleo que las personas con nacionalidad española. El segundo artículo de la tesis analiza la integración social de la población inmigrada y examina hasta qué punto los cambios de ciclo económico han coincidido con una reconfiguración del mercado de trabajo en España y con una modificación en la integración de las personas extranjeras. Los datos seleccionados son los segundos trimestres de la Encuesta de Población Activa para el periodo 2006-2016. Los resultados muestran una distribución de la población inmigrada en la estructura social muy desigual en función del origen nacional. Mientras que los inmigrantes de países enriquecidos muestran altas probabilidades de integrarse en las clases sociales más altas, los inmigrantes de países empobrecidos se encuentran sobrerrepresentados en las clases sociales más bajas indistintamente de sus niveles educativos. Finalmente, se demuestra que la recuperación socio-económica dada a partir del año 2014 solo benefició la integración de las personas con nacionalidad española. El tercer y último artículo de la tesis analiza la inserción laboral de los titulados universitarios cinco años después de la finalización de los estudios. Los resultados muestran que si bien las probabilidades de acabar sobreeducados son altas para hombres y mujeres, una mayor inversión educativa asegura mejores oportunidades laborales para ambos. Además, se confirma en la línea de los artículos anteriores, que las mujeres, en igualdades formativas tienen más dificultades que los hombres para acceder a los empleos de calidad. Asimismo, se establece que las carreras que presentan mayor empleabilidad son las sanitarias y las ingenierías y las que peores posibilidades laborales presentan son las científicas, las ciencias sociales y las humanísticas. Por último, se comprueba que las personas con estudios sexo-atípicos —carreras en las que hay una sobrerrepresentación de personas del género opuesto— tienen más dificultades para insertarse laboralmente y mayores probabilidades de acabar sub-empleados situación que se da cuando las personas tienen una formación superior a la demandada en su puesto de trabajo—, especialmente las mujeres con títulos obtenidos en campos masculinizados.
Aquesta tesi analitza les desigualtats ètniques i de gènere en l'accés al mercat de treball durant el període de la Gran Recessió. El primer article estudia les probabilitats que tenen les persones desocupades d'accedir al mercat de treball. Les dades emprades per a I f article provenen del primer trimestre de l'Enquesta de Població Activa per al període 2006-2016. Aquestes dades permeten estudiar l'accés a l locupació tant en els moments previs com en els posteriors a la crisi socioeconòmica sorgida el 2008 i l'efecte de les responsabilitats familiars sobre les trajectòries laborals d'homes i dones. Els resultats estableixen que malgrat l'alta destrucció d'ocupació masculina conseqüència de la crisi, les dones han tingut pitjors oportunitats d'accedir al treball remunerat en comparació amb els seus coetanis homes. Així mateix, es demostra que malgrat un major nivell educatiu assegura unes millors oportunitats laborals per a homes i dones, els homes tenen sempre més opcions d t accedir al mercat laboral. En tercer 110c, aquest article confirma la "penalització a la maternitat" —penalització laboral soferta per les dones quan tenen fills— i del "premi a la paternitat" —associació positiva entre la paternitat i la probabilitat de trobar una ocupació—. Finalment, estableix que les persones amb nacionalitat estrangera tenen més probabilitats de trobar una ocupació que les persones amb nacionalitat espanyola. El segon article de la tesi analitza la integració social de la població immigrada i examina fins a quin punt els canvis de cicle econòmic han coincidit amb una reconfiguració del mercat de treball a Espanya i amb una modificació en la integració de les persones estrangeres. Les dades seleccionades provenen dels segons trimestres de l'Enquesta de Població Activa per al període 2006-2016. Els resultats mostren una distribució de la població immigrada en l'estructura social molt desigual en funció de l'origen nacional. Mentre que els immigrants de països enriquits mostren altes probabilitats d'integrar-se en les classes socials més altes, els immigrants de països empobrits es troben sobre-representats en les classes socials més baixes indistintament dels seus nivells educatius. Finalment, es demostra que la recuperació socioeconòmica donada a partir de l'any 2014 només va beneficiar la integració de les persones amb nacionalitat espanyola. El tercer i últim article de la tesi analitza la inserció laboral dels titulats universitaris cinc anys després de la finalització dels estudis. Els resultats mostren que si bé les probabilitats d'acabar sobre-educats són altes per a homes i dones, una major inversió educativa assegura millors oportunitats laborals per a tots dos. A més, es confirma en la línia dels articles anteriors, que les dones, en igualtats formatives tenen més dificultats que els homes per a accedir a les ocupacions de qualitat. Així mateix, s'estableix que les carreres que presenten major ocupabilitat són les sanitàries i les enginyeries i les que pitjors possibilitats laborals presenten són les científiques, les ciències socials i les humanístiques. Finalment, es comprova que les persones amb estudis sexe-atípics carreres en les quals hi ha una sobre-representació de persones del gènere oposat— tenen més dificultats per a inserir-se laboralment i majors probabilitats d'acabar sub-ocupats situació que es dóna quan les persones tenen una formació superior a la demandada en el seu lloc de treball—, especialment les dones amb títols obtinguts en camps masculinizats.

En l'ensenyament de Grau en Infermeria a Portugal , la formació específica dels alumnes en " Cures Pal · liatives " és insuficient . Molts estudiants i professionals d'Infermeria tenen dificultats a l'hora d'interactuar en situacions relacionades amb la mort ; descrivint sensacions d'ansietat i falta de coneixements orientats a la cura de persones en fase terminal . La majoria dels estudis que comporten a la Titulació de Grau en Infermeria a Portugal , no compleixen amb les recomanacions de l'EAPC i de la APCP per a la formació d'aquests professionals en l'àrea de les Cures Pal · liatives , principalment pel que fa als continguts de l'assignatura i de la càrrega lectiva . Aquest estudi està guiat per la següent pregunta de recerca : Quines són les repercussions d'un programa de formació optatiu en Cures Pal · liatives a un grup d'estudiants de la Titulació de Grau en Infermeria en una Escola Superior d'Infermeria a Portugal ? . La tipologia d'estudi correspon a Investigació- Acció ( IA ) , una modalitat d'investigació qualitativa . Com a resultats , sobresurten quatre qüestions que contribuiran al coneixement dels estudiants : Repercussions de la formació en els coneixements dels estudiants , Repercussions de la formació en l'acompanyament dels pacients , Repercussions de la formació en l'acompanyament de la família i Repercussions de la formació en la gestió emocional . La formació va contribuir eficaçment a l'hora de prestar cures. La percepció dels estudiants sobre la importància de la formació en cures pal · liatives permetre valorar determinades situacions en aquesta àrea , així com incrementar la confiança dels alumnes per relacionar-se amb els pacients en fase terminal . Aquesta formació també va ampliar els seus coneixements sobre les cures pal · liatives, així com la seva aplicació pràctica , el que va ajudar a despertar la seva atenció sobre determinats aspectes inherents a la filosofia d'aquestes cures .
En la enseñanza de Grado en Enfermería en Portugal, la formación específica de los alumnos en “Cuidados Paliativos” es insuficiente. Muchos estudiantes y profesionales de Enfermería tienen dificultades a la hora de interactuar ante situaciones relacionadas con la muerte; describiendo sensaciones de ansiedad y falta de conocimientos orientados al cuidado de personas en fase terminal. La mayoría de los estudios que conllevan a la Titulación de Grado en Enfermería en Portugal, no cumplen con las recomendaciones de la EAPC y de la APCP para la formación de estos profesionales en el área de los Cuidados Paliativos, principalmente por lo que respecta a los contenidos de la asignatura y de la carga lectiva. Este estudio esta guiado por la siguiente pregunta de investigación: ¿Cuáles son las repercusiones de un programa de formación optativo en Cuidados Paliativos en un grupo de estudiantes de la Titulación de Grado en Enfermería en una Escuela Superior de Enfermería en Portugal?. La tipología de estudio corresponde a Investigación-Acción (I-A), una modalidad de investigación cualitativa. Como resultados, sobresalen cuatro cuestiones que contribuirán en el conocimiento de los estudiantes: Repercusiones de la formación en los conocimientos de los estudiantes, Repercusiones de la formación en el acompañamiento de los pacientes, Repercusiones de la formación en el acompañamiento de la familia y Repercusiones de la formación en la gestión emocional. La formación contribuyó eficazmente a la hora de prestar cuidados. La percepción de los estudiantes sobre la importancia de la formación en cuidados paliativos permitió valorar determinadas situaciones en dicha área, así como incrementar la confianza de los alumnos para relacionarse con los pacientes en fase terminal. Esta formación también amplió sus conocimientos sobre los cuidados paliativos, así como su aplicación práctica, lo que ayudó a despertar su atención sobre determinados aspectos inherentes a la filosofía de estos cuidados.
The undergraduate nursing education, concerning Palliative Care training has several weaknesses, namely in Portugal. Many nurses and students have difficulties dealing with death and refer anxiety and lack of preparedness while caring of terminally ill people. Most courses leading to a nursing degree do not meet the recommendations of the EAPC and APCP for these professionals in the area of palliative care, particularly in terms of programmatic content and workload. This study aims to answer the following research question: What is the impact of an optional training program in palliative care among a group of undergraduated nursing students in a nursing school in Portugal? The study design is framed in the typology of Action Research (A-R), a modality of qualitative research. As a result of the palliative care course, 4 dimensions emerged that contributed to the knowledge of the nursing students: Repercussions of the training course within the student’s knowledge; Repercussions of the training course in the care provided to the patients; Repercussions of the training course in the care provided to the families of the patients; and Repercussions of the training course in the emotional well-being and coping of the students. There was a significant contribution of the palliative care course during clinical practice. The perception that the students had about the importance of a training course in palliative care was noticeable as a form of awakening for specific situations, as well as an increase in confidence while caring terminally ill patients. By implementing this training course, students expanded their knowledge concerning palliative care, and how they can be applied, helping them to be attentive to certain details related to the philosophy of such care, which reflected on the way they acted in clinical practice, through the acquisition of core competencies that derived from the training course.

Abstract:
Transmembrane beta-barrels (TMBB) are a special structural class of proteins predominately found in the outer membranes of Gram-negative bacteria, mitochondria, and chloroplasts. TMBBs are surface-accessible proteins that perform a variety of functions ranging from iron acquisition to osmotic regulation. These properties make TMBBs tempting targets for vaccine or drug therapy development A prediction method based on the physicochemical properties of experimentally characterized TMBB structures was developed to predict TMBB-encoding genes from genomic databases. The algorithm's prediction efficiency was tested using a non-redundant set of sequences from proteins of known structure. The algorithm was based on the work of Wimley (2002), but was improved because of its disappointingly high false-positive prediction rate. The improved prediction algorithm developed in this study was shown to be more accurate than previously published prediction methods. Its accuracy is near 99% when using the most efficient prediction criteria, i.e. where the most known TMBBs are correctly predicted and the most non-TMBBs are correctly excluded. The improved algorithm was used to predict the abundance of TMBBs in 611 chromosomes from Gram-negative and acid-fast bacteria. The average predicted abundance of genomic TMBBs was 3%, which is consistent with previous estimates Predicted outer membrane protein L (OmpL) from Salmonella typhimurium LT2, was tested as a model for validating the prediction method. All of the physicochemical and spectroscopic properties exhibited by OmpL are consistent with other known TMBBs. Recombinant OmpL localizes to the outer membrane when expressed in Escherichia coli; has a beta-sheet-rich secondary structure with stable tertiary contacts in the presence of either detergent micelles or a lipid bilayer; OmpL also forms a pore through which small hydrophilic solutes can diffuse. Together, this data proves that OmpL is a true TMBB, which supports the computational prediction. This work significantly contributes to the advancement of TMBB research

Abstract:
Marsupials and eutherians are mammals that differ in their physiological traits, predominately their reproductive and developmental strategies; eutherians give birth to well-developed young, while marsupials are born highly altricial after a much shorter gestation. These developmental traits result in differences in the development of the immune system of eutherian and marsupial species. B-cells are key to humoral immunity, are found in multiple lymphoid organs, and have the unique ability to mediate the production of antigen-specific antibodies in the presence of pathogens. Marsupial B-cell investigations have become increasingly important in understanding an adaptive immune system that develops primarily ex utero. In comparison to eutherians and monotremes, marsupial B-cells have four Immunoglobulin (Ig) heavy (H) chain isotypes (IgA, IgG, IgM and IgE) and two light (L) chain isotypes; lambda (Igλ) and kappa (Igκ). The gray short-tailed opossum (Monodelphis domestica) is a well-established model marsupial species, with a well annotated genome. The B-cell transcriptome of an individual opossum was investigated by Next Generation RNA-Seq techniques at the single-cell level. A total of 273 single-cells and 575,721 contigs were generated, annotation of the transcriptome identified 14,654 unique genes. The first study of this thesis analysed the IgH and IgL usage in the opossum B-cell repertoire. Not surprisingly, IgM had the highest expression in the repertoire, followed by IgA, IgG, and very few cells expressing IgE. Despite Igκ being the most complex IgL isotype, the ratio of Igκ to Igλ was 35:65. IgL isotypes have been identified to have a greater contribution to antibody diversification than IgH isotypes, due to the complexity and abundance of IgL variable (V) gene segments. The second study of this thesis examined the whole opossum B-cell transcriptome and analysed the most highly expressed genes. The most abundant gene transcripts were Sydnecan-4, making up 0.66% of the entire transcriptome. IgM and IgG cells produced significantly more transcripts of the golgi glycoprotein 1 and ELMO domain-containing protein genes in comparison to IgA. Since IgE expressing cells were very low in number, a definitive comparison could not be made between all IgH cells. Highly expressed genes associated with the marsupial immune system included MHC class II DRα chain and MHC class II DAβ chain. The diverse array of genes identified in the opossum single-cell transcriptome reveals the importance of marsupial B-cells in producing endogenous antibody responses, and has allowed for a comparative analysis with other mammalian lineages.

Os atuais padrões de consumo alimentar nas sociedades ocidentais industrializadas, caracterizados pelo consumo insuficiente de produtos vegetais e excessivo de produtos animais, têm levantado preocupações no âmbito da saúde, bem-estar animal e sustentabilidade ambiental. Para ativar transições alimentares mais saudáveis e sustentáveis, será necessário implementar medidas para redução do consumo de carne e aumento do consumo de alimentos de base vegetal. O presente estudo visou avaliar o apoio a medidas promotoras de uma alimentação de maior base vegetal e explorar o papel de variáveis sociodemográficas, de consumo, ideológicas e disposicionais enquanto preditores desse apoio. Os dados foram recolhidos através de questionários online, tendo-se obtido uma amostra de 295 estudantes universitários. Os resultados revelaram que o apoio às medidas para aumento de refeições de base vegetal é superior ao das medidas para redução de refeições com carne e que os participantes tendem a concordar com as medidas de incentivo, mas discordar em parte das medidas de restrição. Verificaram-se associações entre: apoio a medidas gerais e variáveis sociodemográficas (género), de consumo (dependência da carne, crenças morais e atitudes) e ideológicas (ideologia pró-ambiental); apoio a medidas de incentivo e variáveis sociodemográficas (género), de consumo (dependência da carne, crenças morais, justificações e atitudes), ideológicas (ideologia pró-ambiental) e disposicionais (consideração de consequências futuras e orientação promocional); apoio a medidas de restrição e variáveis sociodemográficas (idade) e de consumo (dependência da carne e atitudes). Espera-se que os resultados ajudem a informar o planeamento de intervenções promotoras de uma alimentação de maior base vegetal em contextos universitários.
Current food consumption patterns in Western industrial societies, characterized by insufficient consumption of plant-based products and excessive consumption of animal products, have raised concerns within the scope of health, animal welfare and environmental sustainability. To activate transitions to healthier and more sustainable diets, it will be necessary to implement measures that promote the reduction of meat consumption and the increase of plant-based products. The present study aimed to assess the support for measures that promote a higher plant-based diet and to explore the role of sociodemographic, consumption, ideological and dispositional variables as predictors of this support. The data were collected through an online questionnaire, with a final sample of 295 university students. The results revealed that the support for measures to increase the consumption of plant-based meals is higher than for measures to reduce the consumption of meat meals and that the participants tend to agree with incentive measures, but partly disagree with restriction measures. Associations were found between: support for general measures and sociodemographic (gender), consumption (dependence towards meat, moral beliefs and attitudes) and ideological variables (pro-environmental ideology); support for incentive measures and sociodemographic (gender), consumption (dependence towards meat, moral beliefs, justifications and attitudes), ideological (pro-environmental ideology) and dispositional variables (consideration of future consequences and promotional orientation); support for restriction measures and sociodemographic (age) and consumption variables (dependence towards meat and attitudes). Results can help to inform the planning of interventions that promote higher plant-based diets in university settings.

This dissertation provides a theoretically grounded framework for investigating "legal rhetoric." By making a distinction between the discursive elements of a Legal system and the broader rhetorical notion of Law, rhetorical critics can better understand the interdependent relationship between citizens, their legal structures, and their cultures. The Legal system represents the forum in which legal disputes are addressed. In contrast, the Law signifies the principles of justice and fairness that give rise to legal disputes addressed by the Legal system. This dissertation emphasizes the important role that media play in disseminating information about specific legal disputes and providing citizens an opportunity to reflect on which principles of justice and fairness are to be valued. This study specifically examines the text, reasoning, and media coverage of Gratz v. Bollinger and Grutter v. Bollinger, two U.S. Supreme Court cases related to the University of Michigan's use of racial classifications in its admissions process. By comparing which arguments and rhetorical elements from the Supreme Court's 2003 decisions were reported in the press, this dissertation both demonstrates the rhetorical concepts of the "Law" and the "Legal System" and suggests how citizens and rhetorical scholars can more fully critique legal texts.

Abstract:
3-Deoxy-D-manno-octulosonate 8-phosphate (KDO8P) synthase is the enzyme responsible for catalyzing the first reaction in the biosynthesis of KDO. KDO is an essential component in the cell wall of Gram-negative bacteria and plants. This compound is not present in mammals; therefore the enzymes responsible for its biosynthesis are potential targets for the development of new antibiotic agents. KDO8P synthase catalyzes the condensation reaction between phosphoenol pyruvate (PEP) and D-arabinose 5-phosphate (A5P) to form KDO8P. Two types of KDO8P synthase have been identified; a metal-dependent type and a non metal-dependent type. KDO8P synthase from the organism Chlorobium tepidum (Cte) has been partially purified and partially characterized. In line with predictions based on sequence alone, the activity of this enzyme is dependent on the presence of a divalent metal ion and is sensitive to the presence of the metal chelating agent EDTA. Cte KDO8P synthase was found to have the highest activity in the presence of Mn2+ or Cd2+. KDO8P synthase from the organism Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (Afe) has also been cloned, purified and biochemically characterized. Afe KDO8P synthase was also found to be a metallo enzyme and the catalytic activity is highest in the presence of Mn2+ or Co2+. Afe KDO8P synthase was found to exist as a tetramer in solution and is most active within the pH range of 6.8 to 7.5 and within a temperature range of 35 ºC to 40 ºC. Sequence analysis suggests that this enzyme has characteristics conserved throughout the metallo and the non-metallo KDO8P synthases and is closely related to the metal-dependent 3-deoxy-D-arabino-heptulosonate 7-phosphate (DAH7P) synthases. The role of several active-site residues of Afe KDO8P synthase has been investigated. A C21N mutant of Afe KDO8P synthase was found to retain 0.5% of wildtype activity and did not require a divalent metal ion for catalytic activity. This suggests that the metallo and non-metallo KDO8P synthases have similar catalytic mechanisms.
