Abstract:
To enable thermal sprayed coatings with increased adhesion, the Institute of Machining Technology (ISF) of TU Dortmund University together with the Institute of Materials Science (IW) of Leibniz Universität Hannover developed an innovative process combination. This serves as a basis for investigating whether the coating properties can be further optimized by an additional process step to allow for the production of wear-resistant coatings in the future without substrate activation by blasting.

Abstract:
Clamping thin-walled workpieces is a challenging problem in high precision turning. Due to the low stiffness of thin-walled workpieces, high workpiece deformations can occur when clamping forces are set too high. For this reason, a sensory chuck for precise clamping force adjustment is being researched by HWR Spanntechnik GmbH and the Institute of Production Engineering and Machine Tools (IFW) at Leibniz Universität Hannover.

At the Institute of Forming Technology and Machines (Leibniz Universität Hannover), a new drive concept for servo presses is being developed which combines the advantages of servo presses with a high dynamic powertrain and flywheel based eccentric presses. This is intended to save acquisition and operating costs. To control the drive engines, a special control concept has been developed which is completely different from control systems of modern servo presses.

Abstract:
AbstractTechnology is a major driver for leveraging the potential of multidimensional sustainable development, regardless of the sector examined. Therefore, engineers have an important contribution in developing innovative technical solutions to ensure more sustainable alternatives to conventional processes or products. In order to support this comprehension from an early age on, it is the task of lecturers at universities by developing students access to sustainable engineering activities with new teaching programs. Regarding conventional product development, the question arises how sustainable products can be developed, which concepts for design and which methods for validation and quantification can be used. These and further questions are the basis of the project-based learning (PBL) approach introduced in this paper as part of a new module "Development of Sustainable Products" at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Leibniz University Hannover. In this paper, the need for new courses in the ecological sustainability context and the requirements for student project work are presented. The concept of the project and the overall objective, that the students are required to assess the ecological environmental impact of electric toothbrushes over the entire product life cycle based on a life cycle assessment (LCA) is introduced. After successfully participating in this project, students are able to conduct ecological sustainability analyses and understand the complexity within the development of sustainable products.

(DIPF/Orig.)

Abstract:
Since the first non-linear forced response validation of frictionally coupled bladed disks, more than 20 years have passed, and numerous incremental modeling and simulation refinements were proposed. With the present work, we intend to assess how much we have improved since then. To this end, we present findings of an exhaustive validation campaign designed to systematically validate the non-linear vibration prediction for the different friction joints at blade roots, interlocked shrouds and under-platform dampers. An original approach for the identification of crucial contact properties is developed. By using the Dynamic Lagrangian contact formulation and a refined spatial contact discretization, it is demonstrated that the delicate identification of contact stiffness properties can be circumvented. The friction coefficient is measured in a separate test, and determined as unique function of temperature, preload, wear state. Rotating rig and engine measurements are compared against simulations with the tool OrAgL, developed jointly by the Leibniz Universität Hannover and the University of Stuttgart, in which state of the art Component Mode Synthesis and Harmonic Balance methods are implemented.

Abstract:
Studying engineering mechanics is mandatory for every engineering student at Leibniz Universität Hannover (LUH). The course is divided into four parts (statics, elastostatics, kinetics and kinematics, dynamics) and is taught over a period of two years at the very beginning of each study program. While students’ evaluations of our courses are good in general, we face a high failure rate in the exams, which are written once at the end of each course. In later stages of the engineering study programs, it seems hard to for us enthusing students for our research topics. Thus, finding M.Sc. or PhD students is more difficult for us than it should be. In a university funded, internal 12-month project we aim to optimize our Engineering Mechanics Tutorials, which provide a specific, relatively interactive form of teaching to the students. With internal and external consultancy by professional lecturers and didactics trainers, our project team has developed a course of actions and measures to raise the academic success of our students. In this publication we will discuss these actions as well as ways to measure and verify their success.

Abstract:
A grouted connection (GC) is a hybrid connection which joins two telescoped steel tubes by filling the annulus between the steel tubes with grout. GCs are frequently used to enable a force fitted connection between piles and substructure of offshore wind turbines. At latticed substructures this connection is located at mudline level in wet ambient conditions (AC). Nowadays special grout materials are used to achieve not only best mechanical properties but also a good performance during grouting in offshore conditions. To reduce production costs the use of ordinary portland cement (OPC) is investigated as an alternative filling material within this paper. OPC has a much lower tendency to segregate, as there are no aggregates added. This leads to more simplified, stable and cheaper production processes offshore. Further focus is put on the failure mode of OPC filled GCs in submerged condtions. For an appropriate use of OPC offshore a feasible mechanical performance needs to be ensured. Investigating this, small and large-scale laboratory tests were performed at Leibniz Universität Hannover. Using the experimental test setup of previous investigations for special high performance grouts (HPG) [1, 2], enables a direct comparison of HPG and OPC. Documenting liquid and solid OPC properties, like slump flow and compressive strength confirms a stable material quality. Small-scale ULS-tests showed significantly lower ULS-capacities and a more brittle failing process compared to HPG. Lagre-scale tests confirmed the observed failure mechanisms of Schaumann and Raba for OPC filled GCs in submerged conditions [3]. Carried out tests showed significant influence of grout material and confirmed influence of grout annulus size on fatigue capacity.

Abstract:
Grouted connections represent a common joining technique between substructure and foundation piles of offshore oil & gas platforms as well as of offshore wind turbines. Due to cyclic loads arising from wind and wave actions the fatigue performance of the connection has to be considered. In lattice substructures like jackets the grouted connections are located at seabed level being fully submerged during their entire lifetime. Today’s fatigue design regulations are based on investigations neglecting any influence of the surrounding water since they were conducted in dry ambient conditions. So far, only Germanischer Lloyd gives additional recommendations for submerged grouted connections. At the Institute for Steel Construction, Leibniz Universität Hannover, Germany investigations of the joint research project ‘GROWup’ focus on the fatigue performance of axially loaded grouted connections. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi, funding sign: 0325290) and is the third project in a row dealing with grouted connections. As part of this research project, cyclic loading tests on small-scale and large-scale grouted connections with shear keys are conducted. Small-scale fatigue tests showed a reduced number of endurable load cycles for connections when tested in wet ambient conditions. However, the transferability of these findings to a larger scale was still doubtful due to unknown scale effects. Therefore, the impact of water on the fatigue performance was tested recently at large-scale grouted connections. Previous to the submerged large-scale grouted connection fatigue tests, similar test specimens were exposed to alternating loads at dry ambient conditions. Comparison of both large-scale test results under wet and dry conditions enable to estimate the influence of water on the fatigue performance of grouted connections. Reflection of the small-scale test results gives hints on the scale effect. Test preparation, test results and design recommendations are presented in the paper.

The aim of the recently published climate control by the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) is a reduction of the German greenhouse gas emissions down to 20 % in 2050, compared to the generated greenhouse gas in 1990. To reach the given target a huge growth in renewable energy is necessary. One of the most potential possibilities to produce renewable energy in Germany will be the installation of offshore wind turbines. During the installation of offshore wind foundations such as monopiles, tripods, tripiles and jackets, mostly large tubular steel piles are impact driven to final penetration depth. In the process of impact driving, considerable underwater sound emissions will appear. In recent times, peak sound pressure levels above 190 dB re 1 μPa have been measured at a distance of 750 m away from the installation ground. These peak sound pressure levels, produced during the installation of any kind of driven offshore foundation, is potentially harmful to marine life, in particular to marine mammals such as harbor porpoises, harbor seals or grey seals. To protect the marine life the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) set the maximum allowed underwater sound pressure level to 160 dB (SEL) at a distance of 750 m away from pile driving. To reach the given target by the BSH a new underwater piling noise mitigation system using so called hydro sound dampers (HSD) is presently developed at the Institute for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering at the Technische Universität in Braunschweig (IGB-TUBS). After small scale tests in the so called ‘large wave channel’ in Hannover a full scale test was performed in the Baltic-Sea some weeks ago. The results of the measurements are very promising, as a reduction of 12 up to 20 dB could be generated. Besides existing noise mitigation systems one of the main advantage of the hydro sound dampers is, that the mitigation can be pre-adjusted to a predefined frequency range, as marine mammals are sensitive only for a certain sound frequency range. In this paper, the results of the small and large scale tests and some new research findings concerning the shape and the material of the hydro sound dampers will be presented.

Abstract:
The phase center corrections (PCC) of an GNSS antenna can be precisely determined using the absolute field calibration procedure with a precise robot. Using the Hannover’s automated absolute antenna field calibration technique developed by the Institute of Geodesy (University of Hannover) and Geo++ we demonstrate that the way of antenna mounting on the robot (distance from mechanical structures mounted underneath the antennas) can cause significant changes in the phase center offset and variations. For both the GPS and the GLONASS carrier signals L1 and L2 these changes are in the order of several millimeters. e also analyzed how these changes transfer to the coordinate domain. We investigated the differences between position estimates obtained using two different, individual and type-mean, elevation dependent PCC. There days of GNSS observations on very short baseline were used for these studies. The position time-series were derived using the RTKLib software package. We found that that the differences in the calibrations models propagate directly into the position domain, affecting sub-daily results and giving visible periodic variations in solutions. The best agreement with the “true position” we obtained using PCC from the individual calibrations.

Abstract:
Results of the suspended sediment concentration study in the coastal zone on the basis of field and laboratory experiments are analyzed. Data from field experiments, performed in the coastal zone of the North, Mediterranean and Black seas, are used. The laboratory researches were fulfilled in the Big Wave Channel of the Hannover University. It is shown that to increase the accuracy of measurement it is necessary to take into account the convective mechanism of the sediment suspension, as well as the size, the direction of the rotation axis and other parameters of the turbulent vortices transporting sand sediments. The presented information will help to improve the quality of field data collection.
