Artikeln problematiserar studieavhopp utifrån studenternas egna upplevelser. Baserat på intervjuer med 24 studenter som hoppat av undervisning i etnologi och kulturantropologi vid Uppsala universitet urskiljer författarna två avhoppstyper: en mindre förekommande som är resultatet av ofrivilligt misslyckande, och en betydligt vanligare som sker frivilligt och efterföljs av studier i andra ämnen, ofta med tydligare yrkeskoppling. Artikeln lyfter fram bakomliggande orsaker i relation till detta avhoppsmönster. Dessa berör den enskilda institutionen, det statliga utbildningssystemet samt förhållanden inom humanistiska och samhällsvetenskapliga ämnen, såsom begränsade undervisningsresurser, hög andel fristående kurser och program utan yrkesexamen, och inte sällan låga antagningspoäng.

1 januari 2010 träder förordning 2009:907 i kraft. Denna förordning medför krav på svenska statliga myndigheter att införa ett miljöledningssystem (MLS). Med anledning av detta avser denna studie att utifrån förutsättningar som ligger till grund för en lyckad integrering av MLS bedöma hur Uppsala universitet på bästa sätt kan möta dessa krav. Efter genomgång av litteratur har fyra faktorer som anses vara betydande för integreringsprocessen valts ut. Dessa är; anpassning av MLS till andra ledningssystem, ansvarsfördelning, kommunikation samt utbildning och kompetens. Dessa fyra variabler har sedan legat till grund för den analysmodell som har använts i syfte att strukturera empiri och analys. Studiens fallorganisation är Uppsala universitet vilket är intressant att studera då det i denna organisation tidigare gjorts försök att integrera ett MLS men utan framgång. Det empiriska materialet består av intervjuer med universitetets miljösamordnare och tre prefekter samt information från universitets hemsida. I det empiriska avsnittet tillkommer ytterligare tre variabler som visat sig vara betydande för integrering av ett MLS på universitetet, nämligen engagemang, resurser och kultur. I studien framkommer att det finns brister i samtliga variabler inom Uppsala universitet och att detta är en bidragande orsak till att integreringsarbetet tidigare misslyckats. Studien avslutas med förslag till förbättringar för att öka möjligheterna till en lyckad integrering av MLS.


A decree which takes effect from 1 January 2010 implies that Swedish government authorities must introduce an environmental management system (EMS). This study therefore intends to assess, based on the conditions that are prerequisites for a successful integration of an EMS, how the University of Uppsala can meet the requirements of the upcoming regulation. After studying the literature four variables considered to be of importance to the integration have been chosen.These are: adaptation to other management systems, responsibility distribution, communication as well as education and competence. These four factors are the base upon which the analysis model that has been used to structure the empirical and analytical chapters is built. An attempt to integrate an EMS has earlier been done at Uppsala University but failed, which is why this was chosen as the case organisation. The empirical material is based on interviews with the environmental coordinator and three prefects and also material from the university homepage. In the empirical chapter three variables are added as they prove to be of great significance to the integration of the EMS namely commitment, resources and culture. The result of the study shows that there are deficiencies in all of the variables at the university and that this has contributed to the earlier failed integration. The study concludes with suggestions of improvement to enhance the chances of a successful integration of EMS.

Abstract:
Bakgrund: Sjuksköterskeyrket har sedan 1800-talet ansetts vara passande för endast kvinnor. Så sent som på 1900-talets mitt blev det accepterat för män att utöva yrket. Forskning visar att sjuksköterskeyrket fortfarande domineras av kvinnor och präglas av fördomar och stereotypa bilder med förutfattade meningar om vem sjuksköterskan är och hur en sjuksköterska ska vara. Syfte: Syftet med denna studie var att undersöka vilken subjektsform sjuksköterskestudenter vid Uppsala Universitet använder vid benämning av sjuksköterskan i godkända examensarbeten, att analysera detta ur ett genusperspektiv samt att se om det har förändrats över tid. Metod: Deskriptiv, kvantitativ och kvalitativ metod. Resultat: I den kvantitativa analysen benämndes sjuksköterskan neutralt med yrkestitel i samtliga granskade examensarbeten. I åtta av 60 granskade examensarbeten användes benämningen “han/hon” och en neutral benämning med yrkestitel. I totalt 9 granskade examensarbeten gjorda 2009 benämndes sjuksköterskan som ”hon” och genom neutral benämning med yrkestitel, medan benämningen ”hon” aldrig användes i examensarbeten gjorda 2012. Benämningen ”han” och/eller ”hen” användes aldrig vid syftning på sjuksköterskan. I den kvalitativa analysen framkom att sjuksköterskan beskrevs som en ödmjuk, empatisk, förstående och vägledande person med kommunikativa förmågor. Slutsats: En mer könsneutral benämning på sjuksköterskan har utvecklats under de senaste åren men stereotypa bilder om vem sjuksköterskan är och hur en sjuksköterska ska vara lever omotiverat kvar.
Background: The nursing profession has since the nineteenth-century been considered suitable for women only. As late as the mid 20th -century, it became accepted for men to practice the profession. Research shows that the nursing profession still is dominated by women and characterized by prejudices and stereotypes with preconceptions of whom and what a nurse should be. Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate which subject nursing students at Uppsala University uses in their mention of the nurse in approved candidate theses, to analyze this from a gender perspective, and to see if it has changed over time. Method: Descriptive, qualitative and quantitative method. Results: In the quantitative analysis the nurse was referred to in neutral terms and / or through title in all audited candidate theses. In eight of 60 candidate theses the term “he/she” and a neutral appellation with the title was used. In a total of nine candidate theses from 2009, the nurse was called “she” and a neutral appellation with the title, while the same appellation of “she” never was used in candidate theses made in 2012. The term “he” or/and the Swedish neutral word “hen” were never used in allusion to the nurse. The qualitative analysis showed that the nurse was described as a humble, empathetic, understanding and guiding person with communicative skills. Conclusion: A more gender-neutral term for the nurse has developed over time, but the image of the nurse lives on, unmotivated, with stereotypical notions of who and how the nurse should be.

Abstract:
Introduktion: Förekomsten av matförgiftningar orsakade i Sverige beräknas till drygt 500 000 fall per år. Flertalet internationella studier belyser kunskapsbrister och ofördelaktiga beteenden beträffande livsmedelshygien, varav vissa indikerar detta särskilt förekommande bland unga vuxna. Friska unga vuxna kan ha ansvar eller kan komma att ansvara för livsmedelshanteringen åt personer, exempelvis barn och äldre, med ökad risk för matförgiftning. Främjande av säker livsmedelshygien bland konsumenter är angeläget för folkhälsa och samhällsekonomi. Syfte: Syftet var att undersöka antal korrekta svar på kunskapsfrågor, självrapporterat beteende och inställning beträffande livsmedelshygien, hos studenter vid Uppsala universitet. Metod och material: Kvantitativ internetbaserad enkät som datainsamlingsmetod valdes då studenter vid Uppsala universitet ombads att delta. Enkäten publicerades på sociala mediet Facebook. Resultat: 123 enkätsvar erhölls. 8,9 procent angav att de varit matförgiftade under det senaste året. 78 procent hade fler än fem korrekta svar på totalt nio kunskapsfrågor. Antalet korrekta svar på kunskapsfrågorna skiljde sig signifikant beroende på kunskapskälla, inte beroende på kön. Ofördelaktigt beteende beträffande livsmedelshygien rapporterades av både respondenter med 0-4 respektive 5-9 korrekta svar på kunskapsfrågorna. 66,7 procent instämde helt med att kunskap om livsmedelshygien är viktigt. Slutsats: Att 78 procent av respondenterna hade fler än fem korrekta svar av totalt nio kunskapsfrågor kan bero på att en betydande del respondenter angav sig ha eftergymnasial utbildning i ämnet. De egna kunskaperna uppfattades som tillfredsställande av respondenterna. Trots detta angavs förekomst av riskfyllda beteenden. Det är relevant att kritiska moment kopplade till livsmedelshygien fortsatt lyfts, oavsett kunskapsnivå och tilltro till egen förmåga.

I denna studie undersöks Uppsala universitets kommunikationsstrategier från mitten av 2000-talet till och med 2010. Kommunikationsstrategierna undersöks utifrån ett nyinstitutionellt perspektiv, för att studera hur institutionellt tryck som marknadisering kommit att påverka dessa. Marknadiseringsprocessen undersöks i sin tur utifrån den institutionella omgivningen i form av politiska initiativ, för att studera den institutionaliserade processen. Utifrån nyinstitutionell teori om organisationers tendenser till formaliserade strukturer, jämförs vad som kommit till uttryck i kommunikationsstrategiska dokument med hur det externa kommunikationsarbetet i praktiken har utvecklats under denna tidsperiod.

Abstract:
This project explores the idea of implementing an electronic device that can melt away ice from frozen bike locks. It narrates the process of starting with no knowledge of how heating works and ending with a manufactured and soldered PCB with limited heating capability. Resistance heating and induction heating was studied in the initial phase of the project. Which proceeded into designing the complete schematic of the induction heater. A prototype was built which advanced further to the development of tools and ways to measure inductance, resonant frequency and temperature before the tests of the performance. When the performance tests were done the induction heater was optimized and later designed in eagle. A PCB circuit was ordered which later was soldered until completion.  The result was an induction heater in PCB form with limited functionality compared to the data of the prototype, due to faulty layout of the circuit. The performance of the end result was 20.02 degrees C to 33.20 degrees C in 11 minutes. The data from the prototype suggests that the induction heater can melt the ice from frozen bike locks since the performance was 21.96 degrees C to 62.02 degrees C in 4 minutes. Any rise in temperature over the boiling point of water 0 degrees C is good but tests in real winter conditions needs to be done to definitively confirm success. The mayor problem is whether a battery can provide with the required energy without getting to big or expensive. If the answer is yes then the induction heater of this project can be used regularly but the manufacturing costs would still be high.

This master thesis in Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies is written as part of the final examination of the Master Program in Archive, Library and Museum and Cultural Heritage Studies at Uppsala university. The study is also done within the framework of the Kulturarvet som högskolepedagogisk resurs vid Uppsala universitet project at Uppsala university.The thesis focus on the university museums in Uppsala and their relationships to LGBTQ. The main theoretical framework consists of queer theory and critical cultural heritage theory. The qualitative methods used are interviews and close reading. The study aims to analyze the way the Uppsala university museum managers talk about museums and LGBTQ and study the legal framework and the political climate in Sweden in regards to LGBTQ-issues at university museums.A central conclusion is a problematic framework surrounding the university museums and LGBTQ. The university museums exist in a gray area between being museums and parts of the university. This means specific laws, regulations, recommendations and guidelines about LGBTQ-issues at museums and universities are hard to apply at the university museums. The Uppsala university museum managers give voice to a situation where the museums lack the recourses and the incentive to deal with the complex issue of LGBTQ representation and perspectives. The close relationship between specific academic fields and the university museums also reflects in the way the museums deal with LGBTQ. This affects the way the museums interact with the university and the public since the museums unintentionally reproduce old heteronormative narratives.
I takt med att föreställningar och attityder i samhället förändras händer även något med museers verksamhet. Både sett till vad museer väljer att fokusera på och vad samhället förväntar sig av verksamheterna. Hbtq har kommit att bli allt mer aktuellt för de svenska museerna under de senaste åren. Denna studie har tittat på hur Uppsala universitetsmuseer förhåller sig till hbtq-perspektiv och -frågor. Studien utgår från kvalitativa intervjuer med museichefer från de fyra universitetsmuseerna som finns i Uppsala. De berörda museerna är Evolutions-museet, Museum Gustavianum, Uppsala linneanska trädgårdar och Medicin-historiska museet. Vad museicheferna berättar och hur de resonerar kring hbtq i relation till sina respektive verksamheter studeras. Likaså omfattar studien en närläsning av Uppsala universitets policydokument och verksamhetsmål, relevant lagstiftning samt kultur- och utbildningspolitiska dokument. I grunden finns ett teoretiskt perspektiv som tar utgång ur queerteori och kritiska kulturarvsstudier. Ett återkommande tema är den komplexa kontexten universitetsmuseerna befinner sig i. Bristen på direktiv och applicerbar lagstiftning innebär att hbtq inte integrerats i universitetsmuseernas verksamhet. Trots att museicheferna visade intresse för frågorna gav de även uttryck för upplevda svårigheter med att integrera och arbeta med hbtq i verksamheterna, vilket återspeglas i avsaknaden av satsningar. Detta kan ses som ett resultat av bortprioritering av frågorna inom Uppsala universitetet bl.a. som följd av en heteronormativt syn inom akademiska fält. Problematiken i relation till detta är att det påverkar vad museerna förmedlar till allmänheten och studenter samt vilka möjligheter det finns att inkludera universitetsmuseer i Uppsala universitets undervisning och forskning.

Abstract:
A technology for renewable energy conversion from ocean waves has been developed at Uppsala University. The concept is intended for large Wave Energy Converter farms and thus requires large series production lines. For this technology to be competitive on the global energy market, it is necessary to keep down the manufacturing costs. Assembly automation will therefore be important, especially if the production should be kept in industrialized countries. Stacking of the stator for the Wave Energy Converter generator is an essential task during the assembly process. The operation is repetitive and time-consuming, requires high precision and large reach and can thus be suitable for industrial robot automation. This paper presents a robot cell design for robotized automation of the stator stacking for an Uppsala University Wave Energy Converter generator. Prototype equipment has been developed and validated in an experimental stacking setup. From these experiments, it has been indicated that the proposed automation solution can substantially reduce the stacking cycle time while assuring sufficient assembly accuracy. The main advantages with the proposed assembly method are the high flexibility, the ability to lift and assemble multiple stator sheets at the same time, the ability to calibrate to the exact position of the stator sheet to be lifted and the high stacking accuracy result. The suggested robot cell is likely to be possible to adjust for stacking of other stator designs as well.

Abstract:
This paper describes, firstly, the rope adjustment device for wave energy converters (WECs) to minimize the tidal effect on the electricity production and, secondly, a wireless communication network between point absorbing WECs in the Lysekil Research Site and a computer station at the Department of Engineering Sciences at Uppsala University. The device is driven by a motor that activates when the main water level deviates from the average. The adjustment is achieved through a screw that moves upwards during low tides and downwards during high tides. For the purpose of testing the device in the research site, a wireless connection between the buoy in the sea and a computer on land will be designed. A sensor located close to the research site monitors the sea water level and, every time a significant variation is registered, it sends wirelessly a signal to the data logger that controls the power to the motor. The position of the screw is observed by a second sensor and the measurements are retrieved back to Uppsala via GSM connection. The full scale device is tested in the lab and it is demonstrated to work properly, requiring less than 750 W to lift and lower different loads. Moreover, the wireless communication network is designed and once it will be built, it will allow to recall and store data, send information from one node of the system to another, monitor the proper functioning of the device and modify the control as desired.

Abstract:
Tightly moored single-body floating devices are an important class of offshore wave energy converters. Examples are the devices under development at the University of Uppsala, Sweden, and Oregon State University, USA, prototypes of which were recently tested off the western coast of Sweden and off the Oregon coast, respectively. These devices are equipped with a linear electrical generator. The mooring system consists of a cable that is kept tight by a spring or equivalent device. This cable also prevents the buoy from drifting away by providing a horizontal restoring force. The horizontal and (to a lesser extent) the vertical restoring force are nonlinear functions of the vertical and horizontal displacements of the buoy, which makes the system a nonlinear one (even if the spring and damper are linear), whose modelling requires a time-domain analysis. Such an analysis is presented, preceded by a simpler frequency-domain approach. Numerical results (motions and absorbed power) are shown for a system consisting of a hemispherical buoy in regular and irregular waves, a tight mooring cable and a power take-off system consisting of a linear spring and a linear damper.
