Abstract:
Mali is a country with a rich history and diverse cultures. Its cultural heritage is, however, threatened by both the pillage of archaeological sites and illicit trade (ICOM 1995; Bedaux & Rowlands, this volunle). Looting has dramatically increased in recent years, especially in the Inland Delta of the Niger, and has obliged Malian authorities to take measures to counteract this destruction. Within the framework of a long-term Malian-Dutch cultural heritage programme, the Rijksmuseum voor Volkenkunde at Leiden recently initiated large-scale excavations in the Inland Niger Delta at Dia, in close cooperation with the Université du Mali, the Institut des Sciences Humaines and the Musée National du Mali in Bamako, the Mission Culturelle in Djenné, the Universities of Paris I and VI, the C.N.R.S., University College London and Leiden University. This excavation, financed principally by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, started in 1998 and will continue until 2004. It is a continuation of previous international programmes of site survey and documentation in the Inland Niger Delta, which the Institut des Sciences Humaines in Bamako has co-ordinated over the past two decades (e.g. Raimbault & Sanogo 1991; Dembele et al. 1993; Togola 1996). An initial season of prospection was carried out in 1998 in the Inland Delta, following which the vicinity of Dia was chosen as the principal research zone for the project.

Thèse de Doctorat, Université de Bamako, (2011)] we have begun the study of non-Archimedean integrable functions with respect to the normalized Bernoulli measures of rank 1, denoted by μ1,α. The integrability is within the theory of non-Archimedean integration due to Monna and Springer [Intégration non-archimédienne. II, Nederl. Akad. Wetensch. Proc. Ser. A 66 = Indag. Math.25 (1963) 643–653; Intégration non-archimédienne. I, Nederl. Akad. Wetensch. Proc. Ser. A 66 = Indag. Math.25 (1963) 634–642], which we will call the Monna–Springer theory. In this paper which contains strictly the results of [Integrable functions for Bernoulli measures of rank 1, Ann. Math. Blaise Pascal17 (2010) 349–363; Mesures p-adiques et suites classiques de nombres. Thèse de Doctorat, Université de Bamako (2011)], we cover the integrability with respect to all normalized Bernoulli measures of rank 1. We show that, the integrable functions are reduced to the continuous functions when α is a p-adic unit different from 1 and -1, and all p-adic functions are integrable for α ∈ {-1, 1}. Again following the Monna–Springer theory, we also show that for the measure μ(5) = ∑α4=1 μ1,α, the space of integrable functions is equal to the space of continuous functions.

Abstract:
Studies have indicated that natural environments have the potential to improve the relationship between a stressful life and psychological well-being and physical health. Forest therapy has recently received widespread attention as a novel solution for stress recovery and health promotion. Bamboo is an important forest type in many countries, especially in East and Southeast Asia and in African countries. Bamboo is widespread throughout southwestern China. Empirical field research on the physiological effects of bamboo forest therapy is currently lacking. To explore the benefits of bamboo forest therapy on the physiological responses of university students, 120 university volunteers between the ages of 19 and 24 participated in this study (60 males and 60 females) and were randomly divided into four groups of equal size (15 males and 15 females in each). Four sites were selected for the experiment, including two natural bamboo forests (YA and YB), a bamboo forest park (DJY), and an urban environment (CS). During the testing period, all participants were asked to view the landscape for 15 min in the morning and then walk in the testing area for 15 min in the afternoon. Blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), and peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) were measured as the physiological indexes, and the semantic differential method (SDM) questionnaire was completed for the environmental satisfaction evaluation. The SDM for the subjective environmental evaluation differed significantly among the university students; they obtained a better environmental experience, in terms of sensory perception, atmosphere, climate, place, and space, in the bamboo forest sites. The three-day bamboo forest therapy session improved the physiological well-being of university students. First, the blood pressure and heart rate of the university students decreased, and the SpO2 increased, after the three-day viewing and walking activities of the three-day bamboo forest therapy session. The viewing activities had a more pronounced effect on decreased heart rate in university students. Additionally, three-day bamboo forest therapy had a positive impact on decreased systolic blood pressure and heart rate in the university students, and it was significantly decreased in females, while peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2) remained relatively low. Finally, compared with the urban site (CS), the bamboo forest sites effectively improved the university students’ physiological state of health, decreased their physical pressure, and stabilized their physiological indicators. These findings provide scientific evidence that a three-day bamboo forest therapy session can increase positive physiological responses. The potential for a longer-term effect on human physiological health requires further investigation.

Abstract:
Introduction: The increasing frequency of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae is becoming a serious public health concern. This study sought to determine ESBL frequency in Enterobacteriaceae isolated from patients’ blood cultures in two university teaching hospitals of Bamako, Mali. Methodology: During a three-month period, the presence of Enterobacteriaceae from blood cultures of patients admitted to the university teaching hospitals of Bamako was evaluated. The microbial identifications were initially performed with an API 20E gallery and VITEK2 locally in Mali, and then confirmation in France was performed with a mass spectrometry MALDI-TOF in the bacteriology laboratory of the university teaching hospital of Bichat. Antibiotic susceptibility profiles were determined by the diffusion method as recommended by the European Committee on Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing (EUCAST). Results: The isolated species were K. pneumoniae (14/40; 35.0%), E. coli (11/40; 27.5%), and E. cloacae (9/40; 22.5%). Of the strains isolated, 21/34 (61.8%) had an ESBL phenotype, including 10/14 (71.4%) K. pneumoniae, 8/11 (72.7%) E. coli, and 3/9 (33.3%) E. cloacae. Resistances associated with ESBL strains of K. pneumoniae, E. coli, and E. cloacae were as follows: gentamicin (10/10, 100%; 6/8, 75%; 2/3, 67%, respectively), amikacin (2/10, 20%; 0/8, 0%; 0/3, 0%, respectively), ofloxacin (8/10, 80%; 7/8, 87%; 3/3, 100%, respectively), and cotrimoxazole (10/10, 100%; 6/8, 75%; 3/3, 100%, respectively). Conclusion: Almost two-thirds (61.8%) of Enterobacteriaceae isolated from our blood cultures were ESBL producers. Only susceptibilities to carbapenems and to amikacin were fully conserved within the strains.

Abstract:
Industrialisation in Japan has seen the country become increasingly urbanised. This has led to a level of disconnection from the countryside among Japanese people and nature has been affected by a lack of human interaction. Previously, satoyama, which refers to the area between the mountains and arable land and has come to represent humankind's interaction with the natural world, could be used to describe the interaction between Japanese people and nature. Bamboo is one natural material that was widely used by Japanese people in many applications, including as food and building materials. But, with the increase in urbanisation came a decline in the use of bamboo in Japan. As a result, bamboo trees and forests expanded across satoyama lands and their rapid expansion into different ecosystems led to the destruction of non-bamboo ecosystems. Professor Kiyoshi Saijo, Faculty of Education, Miyagi University of Education, Japan, is creating curricula to educate Japanese society on the importance of satoyama, and the need to use bamboo. Saijo has created educational programmes at both a university level and for primary school children that align with the aims of the UNs sustainable development goals, including the case study of the Tanabata festival, which features the use of bamboo in several different ways.

The study uses and informational practices of users in information retrieval process is a major focus of research in Information and Communication Sciences, judging by the work on this issue and on the Internet. If the North has a strong tradition in this area, to the south by cons, specifically in Francophone countries of Africa in south of the Sahara, few studies have been devoted to this theme. In Mali, the thesis work of reference on this subject is almost non-existent.This study falls within this thematic and geographical context and aims as public target doctoral students from the University of Bamako. This will be first to define a typology of this information users community (specialization, doctoral schools and laboratories attachment, thematic research, etc.) and then evaluate its information needs and practices finally, to identify the existence of possible access to information problems and propose possible solutions. For data collection a survey of doctoral students and observing their behavior information search situation will be favored. The results of the study will enable a better understanding of community needs and the informational practices of doctoral students from the University of Bamako and could be used by the units of information to improve the supply of information services them

Abstract:
Bamboo is an abundant resource in Ethiopia and has a great potential for commercialization, which can drive rural development. In view of these realities, this study analyzed the state and determinants of small-scale bamboo commercialization in Ethiopia. Data were collected from three major bamboo-growing districts (Awi, Sidama, and Sheka) and four urban centers (Masha, Hawassa, Bahir Dar, and Addis Ababa) via semi-structured interviews, group discussions, and questionnaire surveys with key actors along the value chain. Results revealed distinctive differences in proportion of cash income, value chain structure, and management engagement among the districts. Percentages of cash income were 60.15, 42.60, and 9.48 at Awi, Sidam, and Sheka, respectively. Differences were statistically significant between Sheka and both other districts (p = 0.05), but not between Awi and Sidama. The value chain structure showed that compared with Sheka, Awi and Sidama have a relatively large number of actors involved. The major factors explaining commercialization differences among regions were distance to market and presence of alternative forest products. Within Sheka, households with larger family size, higher education attainment, and access to training reportedly engaged more in commercial extraction. Therefore, we conclude that development of infrastructure for linking resource and consumer centers and expansion of extension education among producers may enhance the commercial engagement of producers and improve the accessibility of bamboo resources for commercial production.

Abstract:
This thesis proposed a framework for conceptualizing critical thinking in language learning. A learning environment where collaborative learning and network technology were combined − computer-mediated collaborative learning (CMCL) − was set up. The main aim was to study the potential of the learning environment in promoting critical thinking (CT) in language learning. The proposed framework of CT in language learning had three aspects: (1) communication, (2) reasoning, and (3) self-reflection. The study was a qualitative one that took place between June 2003 and January 2004. Three case studies were undertaken that involved up to 90 participants, comprising students, teachers, volunteers, and the researcher. All were members of an online learning community, the Bamboo Enterprise. Students worked in groups that investigated environmental problems. The student projects were grouped into three case studies: (1) Using Collaborative Environmental Projects to Promote Communicative Language Learning and Computer Skills, (2) Using Environmental Themes in Computer-Supported Cooperative Learning to Prepare ESL Students for Academic Study in the Australian University Environment, (3) Promoting Communicative Language Learning Through Computer-Supported Cooperative Learning. Findings were based on analyses of five sources of data: (1) interviews with the student participants; (2) teachers’ comments and opinions; (3) questionnaires; (4) students’ overall group work; and (5) online discussions. The investigation found that, overall, the CMCL environment with its particular framework had the potential to promote CT in language learning. However, it had both strengths and weaknesses. The strengths were that it promoted the communicative use of English, encouraged critical thinking in action, and extended the students’ potential to learn a second language. It also encouraged the appropriate use of technology. More importantly, this CMCL environment showed itself to be a viable method of learning and one in which both students and teachers can be empowered. However, along with these advantages, some avenues for improvement were evident. The study found that the students’ grammatical accuracy was low, despite their rich vocabulary and ability to use complex language structures. Some students found working in groups challenging and some never acquired the necessary web skills. Access to the Internet was not always adequate for this type of project. In sum, the students needed more support, especially at the task level, when using this method of language learning.

This paper focuses on the comparative study of Lao-tzu in different excavated documents available, including the bamboo slips of Chu dynasty in Guodian, the silk books of Han dynasty in Mawangdui, and the bamboo slips of Han dynasty collected by Peking University. It tries to find out the linguistic style and thought features of Lao-tzu, reveal some characteristics of its text editing, and then search for the early writing status of its version system. I hope that this study will make a real contribution to the data integration and the philosophical doctrine investigation of Lao-tzu's excavated documents . The linguistic form of Lao-tzu in Han Bamboo Slips is more uniform than the others, and it is more concordant with the specific context, which reveals the fine and strict attitude of editors, better than the other version of Lao-tzu. The use of conjunction words and the function words of auxiliary words has obvious regularity in the writing of Han Bamboo Slips. In particular, the grammatical arrangements within the sentence often show a rigorous narrative structure and coordination of the rhythm, compared to the content of other Lao-tzu versions, and even reached the effect of highlighting or shifting the semantic focus. On the whole, the writing style of the Han Bamboo Slips reflected the influence of time background on the language expression. The differences between the Lao-tzu in Han Bamboo Slips and the other versions are reflected in the detailed content of the narration, the relationship between the writing and the specific value of the evaluation, etc. The basic explanation of Han Bamboo is both concise and rich. The combination of sentence and sequence forms the logic of development cycle, and the specific chapter division also has its rationality in the internal context. Compared with the other excavated books of Lao-tzu, the more pronounced difference of the Han Bamboo Slips is the combing of the concept of relevance and the establishment of the rational approach system. There are also corresponding fragments of Lao-tzu in Han Bamboo Slips with the Guodian and the Mawangdui versions. The similarities between the Han Bamboo Slips and each of Lao-tzu excavated texts, including the linguistic structure, elucidation tendency, conceptual analysis and even the ideological theme, especially the discussion about nomenclature of the ‘naming-name’ issue, all inferred the unique contents of the Han Bamboo may came from an unknown version in the past. It seems that the origin of the version can be presumed to be related to the shape of the Guodian Stage, in a similar ideological and cultural context.

Abstract Bamboo forests accounted for 4.4% and 7% of the forests in Asia and Taiwan, respectively. Rainfall interception is an important process in the water cycle; however, little is known about rainfall interception in the bamboo forests compared with the other forest types. The aims of this study are to utilize the moso bamboo forest to: 1) quantify the spatial variability of the throughfall (Tf) and stemflow (Sf), 2) estimate the interception (Ic) of the forest after the Tf and Sf have been quantified, and 3) characterize Ic in the Taiwan bamboo forest by comparing it to other forests in the literature. This study estimated Ic in the bamboo forest in Xitou Nature Education Area in the National Taiwan University Experimental Forest by measuring precipitation (P), Tf and two methods of Sf from June 8, 2012 to August 1, 2013 on the events basis with the interval of two to three weeks and compared the estimations with those of other forests. Method 1 estimated the stand scale of Sf by measuring the crown project area (CPA) in the 10 samples and measuring the Sf in the 10 samples. The second method estimated the stand scale of Sf by using a linear relationship between DBH of the 10 samples and measuring the Sf in the the 10 samples. In addition, spatial variations were evaluated using the coefficient of variation (CV). CV in Tf was 20.3%. The CV decreased with increases in precipitation. While, CV in Sf was 37% which little decreased with increase in P. Total precipitation (P) during the period from July 26, 2012 to August 1, 2013 was 3826.2 mm, the total Tf was estimated as 81% of the total P. Sf in methods 1 and 2 were estimated as 4.5% and 9.1% of the total P, respectively, whereas the Ic was estimated as 14.5% and 9.9% of the total P, respectively. Compared with the other forests in the Mainland of China, Japan, and Taiwan, the bamboo forests showed a relatively higher Tf and Sf value, and a relatively smaller Ic value than other forest types.

This study held the teaching views of critical paradigm from field which is pointed at the media literacy education of “beyond the protection theory” to replace the practical audio-visual education, even to use the dialog teaching of Paulo Freire as the main structure for the programme and apply with the J. Habermas’s ideal speech situation as a target to be the brand new culture for the curriculums. The intention is to recover the main position of media audiences (that is we called “members”) and analyze and criticize the abilities of media. From the results of study, it was found that it able to be observed the stamps from public media and society culture through the topics of general public. By a systematic discussion, some audiences realized what kind of ideology represented by media and how they represented. They even realized the operation of deeper power relationship. With the dialogs, it breaks the traditional teaching ways to let the publics learn the possibilities of forming knowledge from it.

Abstract:
The Bamana state of Segou (c.1700–1861) has been used as an exemplar of the slave system of economic production amongst Sahelian states by anthropologists and historians such as Bazin (1974), Roberts (1987), and Meillassoux (1991). However, little is known about the nature of Segou's connection to broader slave-trading networks of the time or, from an archaeological perspective, how such slave systems of production may be viewed in terms of settlement types or patterns. This chapter addresses aspects of these two puzzles through the field research of Project Segou, a collaboration between University College London and the Malian Institut des Sciences Humaines. It concentrates on results from the 2006 season directed by the authors — fieldwork which focused on the nature and history of Segou's slave economy. The chapter summarizes findings on the functioning of the Segovian slave system of production, and then briefly considers two case studies: one concerning Segou's first major war of enslavement, and a second examining two of Segou's enigmatic Sifinso (or ‘schools of the black hair’), places which may have played an important role in the mental conditioning of select groups of new captives.

Abstract:
Bearing in mind that undergraduate students must get involved in research and that local industry must be a university partner, the School of Engineering, from University of Minho, has taken the initiative in funding some technical research projects in specifically defined areas (http://www.eng.uminho.pt). In this context, one of the projects founded concerns the development and testing of functional knitting which can be used with success in the lining of a shoe. The study of shoe comfort is of great importance to sport and leisure footwear manufactures, because in these particular situations, moisture disposal over a number of hours is a main problem. Three structures which combine different raw materials (soybean fiber, bamboo fiber, corn fiber, cotton, polypropylene and polyester) have been manufactured by a local textile factory. A group of students mainly from Mechanical and Textile Engineering classes are currently testing these knitting in terms of their water vapor and air permeability and other physical parameters at the laboratory. Tests with a thermal manikin have been used to measure its thermal insulation. A transient model for heat and mass transfer in a fabric has been implemented. From the solution, temperature and vapor density profiles in the fabric thickness can be obtained as well as, the amount of water dissolved in the fabric. This model has been integrated with an existing human thermal comfort model. Thermal comfort surveys are now being made at the Ergonomics Laboratory of the University of Minho with undergraduate Mechanical and Industrial Engineering students, wearing sport shoes manufactured by a local footwear factory, and these results can be compared using statistical analysis, with the experimental and numerical results already obtained.

Abstract:
Sustainability is an issue of great importance in the building and energy sectors. In the United States, about 40% of total energy use is in buildings, 30% of raw materials are used in buildings, 30% of waste outputs come from buildings, 30% of greenhouse gas emissions are attributed to buildings, and 12% of potable water consumption occurs in buildings. Thus, there is a great necessity for the rapid deployment of highly sustainable buildings that are aesthetic and reliable. Solar houses are highly sustainable and can be designed to be reliable by using streamlined technologies, providing as much power as needed, and by minimizing the energy usage within the building. The US DOE Solar Decathlon offered a great opportunity to test these criteria which were at the same time the fundamental elements taken into consideration when designing the Santa Clara University (SCU) solar house in 2007 [1]. In this research the SCU solar decathlon solar house energy and thermal performances were analyzed. The energy and thermal loads were modeled using EnergyPlus™ software which helps to perform detailed modeling of the energy and thermal performances of buildings. The conditioned space of the building consists of two rectangular shaped zones, the living room and the bedroom, which together are approximately 45ft along the east-west direction and 11ft wide. Wood framing with R-19 insulation, made from recycled jeans, was used for the walls. The roof and the floor are constructed of a bamboo wood frame with foam insulation. Daylighting was maximized through active windows (i.e. electro-chromic), energy efficient appliances were incorporated along with solar thermal air conditioning, heating and hot water. Performance parameters for the mechanical systems were developed from conventionally available technologies and the control set-points were based on DOE Solar Decathlon 2007 (SD07) guidelines [1]. The thermal energy design decisions for the house were based largely on a combination of the solar decathlon contest requirements and that technologies were sustainable and commercially available. The house was tested in Washington DC in October 2007 during the competition and performed excellently well ranking at the top in the following categories: energy balance, thermal comfort, and hot water. Data collected during the event provide the unique opportunity of validating the simulated energy and thermal performances of the house with weather file created from the real-time weather data. The created weather file is used to run new simulations of the SCU SD07 house, from these results we can assess the accuracy of the simulation program used. If accuracy is high enough, annual simulations are executed to demonstrate how the house would perform under extreme climatic conditions in different regions.
