Abstract:
Considering the reality that always it is quite clear that some forms of Internet usage may seem more important than the others and that some of them may be consider as a serious problem treating young adults users, this research on the hand, intended to study the all types of Internet usage and their intensity before Iranian and French students, and on the other hand, it is interested in discovering an eventual dependence to internet among them to explain and analyze easily un existing reality in the universities environment. Also, this survey aimed to measure Internet usage rate in comparison with other media in everyday life of students. We firstly tried to classify all types of Internet uses (the functions) which are more common to the users and the rate of their satisfaction. The basic empirical of this comparative study was based on two quantitative survey using inquiry by which this research has been fulfilled in Iran and French on a sample of 300 social sciences students of first cycle (bachelor) in 2010. Our findings are based on a comparison, two samples and two different populations (Iran and French) emerging from two different culture. We have confirmed that Iranian respondents use Internet mainly for seeking information, then for communicative purposes and at last for entertainment, but the French respondents use it firstly for communicative purposes, and informative and entertainment functions occupied respectively second and third place. Also, the number of users who are dependent to Internet with a small difference is lower than 10% (while French respondents are more dependent than Iranian) and almost a third of Iranian and French respondents are satisfied of Internet (while French are more satisfied of Internet than Iranian). This study demonstrate that French respondents in comparison with Iranian use Internet more frequently for educational objectives and another result of the research shows that there is a meaningful correlation between usage period of Internet for educational purposes and the rate of reading journals. Also, a finding reveals that there is a meaningful relation with high correlation between the sex and Internet usage function only before French respondents

From the interest in understanding the formation of the student, focusing on the future as professionals who must be able to act differently in different situations in your professional and personal with a high social commitment, we understand that the university extension programs can fulfill important role in this regard. The extension programs aimed at, among its objectives, the training for university students taking social commitments and work towards a less unequal society. We choose then as a field of research, an outreach program at a Catholic university (here called the Center), who works for social inclusion of people with disabilities from an interdisciplinary perspective, taking his team teachers and students in different areas of their undergraduate courses. From a brief history of higher education in Brazil, the implementation of continuing education in institutions of higher education and in this context, the debate on the responsibilities of the State and the University for the development of society, emphasize the importance of assessment procedures university extension programs. From our point of view, these processes are essential to advance these programs and play an important role in the formation of student extension. We argue that the evaluation of extension programs is necessary to address the inseparability of the axes of teaching and research-extension, interdisciplinarity, and to the peculiarities of the specific study, the inclusion of people with disabilities. We develop a meta-evaluation of goals: (1) determine what are the strengths of the evaluation process conducted by the extension program put into the study, (2) ascertaining the weaknesses of this process, and (3) to reflect about which aspects of this assessment contributes to the formation of students participating in the program. This is a case study, and the methodological procedures used were document analysis of the program, literature review, and conducting semi-structured interview with the Coordinator of the program. The empirical analysis was constructed qualitatively and quantitatively. The results showed that operating a process to assess the extent is a complex and that gaps and contradictions must be analyzed carefully, may limit the contributions that the extension activities have potential for the training of students who took part.

Abstract:
Employability is defined as an interweaving of a person’s human, social and psychological capital, mediated by situational variables, which allows individuals to enter the job market with a professional personal project (Grimaldi, Porcelli, Rossi 2014). Nowadays, young people enter the job market through long, precarious, and poorly contextualized paths, while the socialization processes become recursive, discontinuous, and fragmented (Lodigiani 2010). A key role can be played by guidance services, which can start at university, to meet the demands of the (many) young people who are discouraged and disillusioned to the point where they cannot even imagine a job while still at university. In the employability stakes, what is even more complex is the encounter between young people with disabilities and the world of work, due to the persistence of stereotypes and stigmas. Research questions: What are the intervention models and guidance practices adopted by university guidance services internationally to promote the exploration of skills relating to the employability of students with disabilities? Objectives: To analyse the main intervention models and guidance practices adopted internationally to explore the skills associated with employability in students with disabilities. Methodology: It was decided to carry out a theoretical analysis of 20 scientific articles concerning the models and practices adopted to explore the competences relating to employability in certain university orientation services for students with disabilities in Italy, France, the UK, and the United States. NVivo software was used (Richards 1999) to systematically explore the scientific literature. Preliminary Findings: A first scientific paper showed that, like in Italy and France, the «Competence Balance Sheet» (Ardouin 2010) is the guiding practice in the USA, while in the UK, it is the Career Guidance Approach (Reid, Scott 2010). In the literature, orientation models and practices are also closely linked to the various patterns of employability. Final remarks: The implementation of guidance counseling paths aimed at exploring the skills associated with employability among all students and graduates is crucial to the completion of a viable strategic action in the University’s social function, as a part of new organizational models that take the plurality of learning opportunities into account

Abstract:
Jeffrey M. Kallemeyn of Abbott Laboratories showed (Synlett 2011, 535) that 1, prepared by Itsuno-Corey reduction of the corresponding ketone, could be cyclized to 2 with high diasteroselectivity. Gérard Audran of the Université Paul Cézanne developed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2011, 52, 1082) a practical preparation of 3, then optimized the enzymatic resolution. David J. Aitken of Université Paris-Sud prepared (Tetrahedron Lett. 2011, 52, 1253) a 1:1 mixture of the readily separable diastereomers of 8 by the photochemical addition of ethylene 7 to 6. Rick L. Danheiser of MIT observed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2011, 52, 2111) high regioselectivity in the addition of ketene ketene 10 to the ynamide 9. Wesley J. Moran of the University of Huddersfield originated (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 2220) a protocol for the oxidative cyclization of 12 to 13. Kevin R. Campos of Merck Process effected (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 1004) diastereoselective conjugate addition to the nitrile 14, prepared by enzymatic reduction of the corresponding enone. Qizheng Yao of China Pharmaceutical University and Ao Zhang of the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica devised (J. Org. Chem. 2011, 76, 2820) the condensation of 18 with the carbohydrate-derived 17, giving the racemic cyclopentenone 19. Erick M. Carreira of ETH Zürich effected (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 78) unsymmetrical ozonolysis of the enantiomerically pure 20 to give 21 as the only isolable regioisomer. Isabelle Chataigner and Serge R. Piettre of the Université de Rouen observed (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2011, 50, 472) smooth addition of the dipole precursor 23 to 22, leading to the dearomatized 24. En route to clavolonine, Hiromichi Fujioka of Osaka University converted (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 2015) 25, readily prepared via Birch reduction of benzoic acid, to the highly substituted cyclohexanone 26. Tony K. M. Shing of the Chinese University of Hong Kong devised (Synlett 2011, 1318) an efficient protocol for the conversion of the carbohydrate-derived 27 into 29, with preservation of the enantiomeric purity. The development of general strategies for the assembly of angularly substituted polycarbocyclic systems is one of the continuing challenges of organic synthesis. Samir Z. Zard of Ecole Polytechnique used (Org. Lett. 2011, 13, 1230) the ketone of 30 to direct the substitution of the proximal alkene, leading to 31.

Abstract:
Objective: To synthesize the findings presented in systematic reviews and meta-analyses as well as to update the evidence using a meta-analysis in evaluating the efficacy and safety of CQ and HCQ with or without Azithromycin for the treatment of COVID-19 infection. Methods: The design of this meta-review followed the preferred reporting items for overviews of systematic reviews including harms checklist (PRIO-harms). A comprehensive search included several electronic databases in identifying all systematic reviews and meta-analyses as well as experimental studies which investigated the efficacy and safety of CQ, HCQ with or without antibiotics as COVID-19 treatment. Findings from the systematic reviews and metaanalyses were reported using a structured summary including tables and forest plots. The updated metaanalyses of experimental studies was carried out using the distributional assumption-free quality effects model. Risk of bias was assessed using the assessing the methodological quality of systematic reviews (AMSTAR) tool for reviews and the methodological standard for epidemiological research (MASTER) scale for the experimental studies. The main outcome for both the meta-review and the updated metaanalyses was mortality. Secondary outcomes included transfer to the intensive care unit (ICU) or mechanical ventilation, worsening of illness, viral clearance and the occurrence of adverse events. Results: A total of 13 reviews with 40 primary studies comprising 113,000 participants were included. Most of the primary studies were observational (n=27) and the rest were experimental studies. Two meta-analyses reported a high risk of mortality with similar ORs of 2.5 for HCQ with Azithromycin. However, four other metaanalyses reported contradictory results with two reporting a high risk of mortality and the other two reporting no significant association between HCQ with mortality. Most reviews reported that HCQ with or without Azithromycin had no significant effect on virological cure, disease exacerbation or the risk of transfer to the ICU, need for intubation or mechanical ventilation. After exclusion of studies that did not meet the eligibility criteria, the updated meta-analysis contained eight experimental studies (7 RCTs and 1 quasiexperimental trial), with a total of 5279 participants of whom 1856 were on either CQ/HCQ or combined with Azithromycin. CQ/HCQ with or without Azithromycin was significantly associated with a higher risk of adverse events. HCQ was not effective in reducing mortality transfer to the ICU, intubation or need for mechanical ventilation virological cure (RR 1.0, 95%CI 0.9-1.2, I2 =55%, n=5 studies) nor disease exacerbation (RR 1.2, 95%CI 0.3-5.0, I2 =29%, n=3 studies). Conclusion: There is conclusive evidence that CQ and HCQ, with or without Azithromycin are not effective in treating COVID-19 or its exacerbation.

Elhag, Saba, Ibrahem Abdalhakam, and Manar Abel-Rahman. "Prevalence of Consanguinity among ASD Individuals: Systematic Review & Meta-analysis." In Qatar University Annual Research Forum & Exhibition. Qatar University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.29117/quarfe.2020.0163.

Full text
Abstract:
Aim: We aim to estimate the global prevalence of consanguinity among the ASD families and compare that among different populations. Methods: Meta-analysis of observational studies reporting prevalence of consanguinity among ASD families was searched systematically in important databases including EMBASE, PubMed and Academic Search Complete. Individual studies were screened by two reviewers independently, extracted data and assessed the risk of bias using a risk of bias tool (Hoy’s tool). Random Effect model was used to calculate pooled weighted estimates due to considerable heterogeneity. Subgroups analysis was also calculated. Results: 10 publications were identified based on our inclusion criteria from 8 different countries, 4 of them were from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the rest were from: Lebanon (2 studies), Egypt, Jordan, Iran, and Israel). Studies varied in ASD cases numbers as it ranged between 49 -500, and the total ASD individuals in all studies were 1581. All studies address consanguinity among the ASD families despite the variation in the methods. The pooled estimate of consanguinity among ASD families was 24% Subgroup analysis by the study country led to a higher pooled estimate of consanguinity of 38% in the GCC countries compared to other than GCC countries with a pooled estimate of 16%. In addition, the overall odd ratio calculated from the case-control studies included in our meta-analysis was 1.5. Discussion: To our knowledge, this is the first meta-analysis that studied the prevalence of consanguinity among ASD families worldwide. Children born to consanguineous parents have been reported to have lower social behavior and cognitive ability, which are the main problems with ASD children. Our study qualitatively reviewed the prevalence of consanguinity among ASD families throughout the world and 10 eligible studies from eight countries were identified. We quantitatively synthesized the results and the key findings of this study showed a 24% overall pooled estimate of consanguinity among ASD families. GCC countries showed a high estimated pooled prevalence of consanguinity among ASD families as 38% compared to countries other than GCC 16%, which was higher than our overall pooled prevalence. This high estimate among GCC countries can be related to the high rates of consanguineous marriage in the GCC countries compared to the worldwide rates (20%). In Qatar, the rate of consanguineous marriage reported as 54%. This high rates among GCC countries may be due to factors like rooted cultural beliefs, social life and customs in addition to, economic benefits of keeping wealth within the families. Conclusion: The globally estimated pooled consanguinity prevalence among ASD patients was 24%, GCC countries showed a higher pooled prevalence (38%)

Rafeeque, Ameena, and Mohammed Fasihul Alam. "The effect of Renin Angiotensin System Blockers versus Calcium Channel Blockers on Progression towards Hypertensive Chronic Kidney Disease: A comprehensive systematic review based on Randomized Controlled Trials." In Qatar University Annual Research Forum & Exhibition. Qatar University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.29117/quarfe.2020.0162.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Decline in estimated Glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is associated with further progression of chronic kidney disease. Evidence suggests that Renin Angiotensin System blockers (RAS), which can be angiotensin-receptor blockers (ARBs) or Angiotensin converting enzymes Inhibitors (ACEIs), have reno- protective effect, but results are variable. Similarly, effects of Calcium channel blockers (CCBs) are shown to have a role in protecting renal function but differ across studies. Hence, the relative effect of ARBs or ACEIs as well as CCBs, and their administration as monotherapy, remain uncertain. Purpose: To summarize and determine the pooled effect of RAS versus CCBs on progression towards hypertensive CKD amongst diabetic as well as non-diabetic patients with CKD of any stage from I-IV. Data sources: All language studies in PubMed, the Cochrane Library Central, Clinical Registry of unpublishedTrials, WHO, Embase, Scopus, ProQuest, reference lists, and expert contacts up to September 2019. Study selection: This study included all the full text articles that studied diabetic and non-diabetic patients with eGFR ≥ 15 ml/min per 1.73m3 or Urinary albumin excretion levels (UAE) ≤ 300mg/d during RAS based treatment an intervention in direct comparison with CCBs treatment based approach as comparator at baseline and at the end of follow-up. However, pooling of all the included studies using meta-analysis was not feasible due to substantial study heterogeneity and the small number of included studies that are meta-analyzable. So, studies were selected for systematic review, and out of which, all the meta-analyzable studies were quantitatively analyzed on the basis of main outcomes such as (i) Relative risk for CKD progression and (ii) Mean differences in SBP and DBP for both the arms. Doi plot and funnel plot were used for detection of publication bias. Results: Review with seven included trials, and metaanalysis using IVhet model was done on three studies for primary CKD outcome and four studies for secondary BP outcomes. RAS blockers and CCBs did not show any statistically significant differences in terms of its effects on further progression CKD with RR of 0.90 [95% CI 0.69, 1.16]. Moreover, there was no statistically significant difference in BP from baseline to final end points between CCBs and RAS inhibitors with WMD of -2.09 mmHg [95% CI -5.96, 1.79] for mean SBP change and -0.71 mmHg [95% CI -2.16, 0.73] for mean DBP change. Conclusion: Evidence asserts no difference between RAS and CCB concerning the risk of progression for CKD and in terms of mean BP differences. However, the study have its own set of limitations due to which more well designed and well conducted RCTs with robust findings are required to confirm the inferences based on this review.

Naseralallah, Lina Mohammad, Tarteel Ali Hussain, Shane Pawluk, and Myriam Eljaam. "The Impact of Pharmacist Interventions on Reducing Medication Errors in Pediatric Patients: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis." In Qatar University Annual Research Forum & Exhibition. Qatar University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.29117/quarfe.2020.0153.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Medication errors are avoidable events that could occur at any stage of the medication use process. They are widespread in the healthcare system and are associated with increased risk of morbidity and mortality. Implementing a clinical pharmacist is one strategy that is believed to reduce medication errors in the general population including pediatric patients who are more vulnerable to medication errors due to several contributing factors including the challenges of weight-based dosing. Aim: The aim of this study is to qualitatively and quantitatively evaluate the impact of clinical pharmacist interventions on medication error rates for hospitalized pediatric patients. Methodology: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane and Google Scholar search engines were searched from database inception to February 2019. Study selection, data extraction and quality assessment was conducted by two independent reviewers. Observational and interventional studies were included. Data extraction was done manually and the Crowe Critical Appraisal Tool (CCAT) was used to critically appraise eligible articles. Summary odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated using a random-effects model for rates of medication errors. Results: A total of 19 studies were systematically reviewed and 6 studies (29 291 patients) were included in the meta-analysis. Pharmacist interventions involved delivering educational sessions, reviewing prescriptions, attending rounds and implementing a unit-based clinical pharmacist. The systematic review showed that the most common trigger for pharmacist interventions was inappropriate dosing. Pharmacist involvement was associated with significant reductions in the overall rate of medication errors occurrence (OR, 0.27; 95% CI, 0.15 to 0.49). Conclusion: The most common cause for pharmacist interventions in pediatric patients at hospital settings was inappropriate dosing. Overall, pharmacist interventions are effective at reducing medication error rates.

Abstract:
Background: Hemoglobinopathies are among the most common inherited genetic diseases. The World Health Organization estimates that at least 5% of the world’s population are carriers for hemoglobinopathies (2.9% for thalassemia and 2.3% for sickle cell disease). Programs like premarital screening (PMS) have been developed in most Middle East countries on a mandatory basis to reduce atrisk marriages by providing counseling after a confirmed “genetic carrier” state for hemoglobinopathies. Aim/Objective: The aim of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to estimate the prevalence of atrisk marriages globally and see the variation by region, income level, ethnicity, study period, implementation year of PMS program, study design and consanguinity proportion. Methods: Different databases such as PubMed, Science Direct, and Scopus were searched systematically by using key terms and MeSH Terms. Studies from Google Scholar and reference lists of studies were also collected, and the author extracted all relevant data. Two reviewers independently conducted quality assessment by using Hoy et al (2012) risk of bias tool. Quality effects model (QEM) was used due to considerable heterogeneity observed between studies. Subgroup analysis and sensitivity analysis were also performed for assessing the causes of heterogeneity. Results: A total of 15 studies were included in this meta-analysis. The overall pooled prevalence of at-risk marriages among total couples at-risk was 64% (95% CI: 49%- 78%). Estimates of several subgroups were found to be different as compared to the overall pooled estimate. Funnel plot and Doi plot indicated the presence of publication bias. Sensitivity analysis including only studies with low risk led to a pooled estimate of 52% (CI: 46%, 57%) and indicated absence of publication bias. Conclusion and recommendations: The pooled estimates varied widely and there was a substantial heterogeneity among studies, therefore, there is a need for more well-designed studies across different countries. Moreover, the importance of the quality of counseling sessions should be stressed and combined with efforts in other community sectors, such as high schools where students can attain high knowledge regarding genetic diseases before the age of marriage.

Abstract:
In a qualitative study of 40 women faculty in sciences, engineering, and medicine (http://sites.nationalacademies.org/SexualHarrassment.htm), respondents at all career levels and fields reported a range of sexual harassment experiences, including gender-based harassment (e.g., gendered insults, lewd comments), unwanted sexual advances, stalking, and sexual assault by a colleague. Sexual harassment experiences often diminished study participants' scientific productivity as energy was diverted into efforts to process emotional responses, manage the perpetrator, report the harassment, or work to prevent recurrences. Many women who experienced sexual harassment adjusted their work habits and withdrew physically or interpersonally from their departments, colleagues, and fields. Study participants who disclosed harassment to a supervisor or department leader often reported that the reactions they received made them feel dismissed and minimized. Sympathetic responses were often met with dismissiveness, minimization, or sympathy, but active or formal support was rarely provided, and women were typically discouraged from pursuing further action. Formal reporting using university procedures was often avoided. University-level reporting sometimes damaged women's relationships with department colleagues. Women who disclosed their experiences often faced long-term, negative impacts on their careers. Study participants identified opportunities to address sexual harassment by (1) harnessing the power of university leaders, department leaders, and peer bystanders to affect the academic climate; (2) instituting stronger and better-enforced institutional policies on sexual harassment with clear and appropriate consequences for perpetrators; and (3) advancing the cross-institutional work of scientific and professional societies to change the culture in their fields.

Abstract:
This special report discusses the outcomes of a September 2019 workshop intended to identify barriers to the consideration and implementation of natural and nature-based features (NNBF) in US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) civil works projects. A total of 23 participants representing seven USACE districts, the US Army Engineer Research and Development Center (ERDC), and the University of California–Santa Cruz met at USACE’s South Atlantic Division Headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia, to discuss how to facilitate the implementation of NNBF into USACE project planning for wetlands and reefs using six categories: (1) site characterization, (2) engineering and design analysis, (3) life-cycle analysis, (4) economic analysis, (5) construction analysis, (6) and operation and maintenance (and monitoring). The workshop identified seven future directions in wetland and reef NNBF research and development: • Synthesize existing literature and analysis of existing projects to better define failure modes. • Determine trigger points that lead to loss of feature function. • Identify performance factors with respect to coastal storm risk management (CSRM) performance as well as ecological performance. • Focus additional research into cobenefits of NNBF. • Quantify the economic life-cycle costs of a project. • Improve technology transfer with regards to NNBF research and topics.

Full text
Abstract:
Emissions from trash burning represent an important component of regional air quality, especially in countries such as India where the practice of roadside, residential, and municipal trash burning is highly prevalent. However, research on trash emissions is limited due to difficulties associated with measuring a source that varies widely in composition and burning characteristics. To investigate trash burning in India, a collaborative program was formed among RTI, Duke University, and the India Institute of Technology (IIT) in Gandhinagar, involving both senior researchers and students. In addition to researching emission measurement techniques, this program aimed to foster international partnerships and provide students with a hands-on educational experience, culminating in a pilot study in India. Before traveling, students from Duke and IIT met virtually to design experiments. IIT students were able to visit proposed sites and offer specified knowledge on burning practices prior to the pilot study, allowing potential experiments to be iteratively improved. The results demonstrated a proof of concept of using a low-cost sensor attached to a commercial drone to measure emissions from a municipal dump site. In addition, for small-scale residential and roadside trash burning, a combustor was designed to burn trash in a consistent way. Results suggested that thermocouples and low-cost sensors may offer an affordable way for combustor designers to assess particulate emissions during prototype iterations. More experiences like this should be made available so that future research can benefit from the unique insights that come from having veteran researchers work with students and from forming international partnerships.
