Abstract:
Considering the reality that always it is quite clear that some forms of Internet usage may seem more important than the others and that some of them may be consider as a serious problem treating young adults users, this research on the hand, intended to study the all types of Internet usage and their intensity before Iranian and French students, and on the other hand, it is interested in discovering an eventual dependence to internet among them to explain and analyze easily un existing reality in the universities environment. Also, this survey aimed to measure Internet usage rate in comparison with other media in everyday life of students. We firstly tried to classify all types of Internet uses (the functions) which are more common to the users and the rate of their satisfaction. The basic empirical of this comparative study was based on two quantitative survey using inquiry by which this research has been fulfilled in Iran and French on a sample of 300 social sciences students of first cycle (bachelor) in 2010. Our findings are based on a comparison, two samples and two different populations (Iran and French) emerging from two different culture. We have confirmed that Iranian respondents use Internet mainly for seeking information, then for communicative purposes and at last for entertainment, but the French respondents use it firstly for communicative purposes, and informative and entertainment functions occupied respectively second and third place. Also, the number of users who are dependent to Internet with a small difference is lower than 10% (while French respondents are more dependent than Iranian) and almost a third of Iranian and French respondents are satisfied of Internet (while French are more satisfied of Internet than Iranian). This study demonstrate that French respondents in comparison with Iranian use Internet more frequently for educational objectives and another result of the research shows that there is a meaningful correlation between usage period of Internet for educational purposes and the rate of reading journals. Also, a finding reveals that there is a meaningful relation with high correlation between the sex and Internet usage function only before French respondents

From the interest in understanding the formation of the student, focusing on the future as professionals who must be able to act differently in different situations in your professional and personal with a high social commitment, we understand that the university extension programs can fulfill important role in this regard. The extension programs aimed at, among its objectives, the training for university students taking social commitments and work towards a less unequal society. We choose then as a field of research, an outreach program at a Catholic university (here called the Center), who works for social inclusion of people with disabilities from an interdisciplinary perspective, taking his team teachers and students in different areas of their undergraduate courses. From a brief history of higher education in Brazil, the implementation of continuing education in institutions of higher education and in this context, the debate on the responsibilities of the State and the University for the development of society, emphasize the importance of assessment procedures university extension programs. From our point of view, these processes are essential to advance these programs and play an important role in the formation of student extension. We argue that the evaluation of extension programs is necessary to address the inseparability of the axes of teaching and research-extension, interdisciplinarity, and to the peculiarities of the specific study, the inclusion of people with disabilities. We develop a meta-evaluation of goals: (1) determine what are the strengths of the evaluation process conducted by the extension program put into the study, (2) ascertaining the weaknesses of this process, and (3) to reflect about which aspects of this assessment contributes to the formation of students participating in the program. This is a case study, and the methodological procedures used were document analysis of the program, literature review, and conducting semi-structured interview with the Coordinator of the program. The empirical analysis was constructed qualitatively and quantitatively. The results showed that operating a process to assess the extent is a complex and that gaps and contradictions must be analyzed carefully, may limit the contributions that the extension activities have potential for the training of students who took part.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to point out the critical position of University Continuing Education Units in the context of knowledge economy for their contribution to local development, and to analyse to what extent these units in the case of Turkey serve for this function. For this purpose, first, the nature of knowledge economy and transformations initiated in this process in labour markets and in nature of education are analysed. Next, new understanding of lifelong learning and restructuring process in universities, which are connected with transformation in these two fields, are discussed. Later, position of cities and importance of urban policy for local development within the context of knowledge economy is examined. Consequently, as a product of these intertwined transformations, it is revealed that University Continuing Education Units appear to be key actors for cities for their contribution to local development. Then, based on the facts developed in the theoretical arguments
data of University Continuing Education Units of Turkey and Middle East Technical University Continuing Education Center (METU CEC) scrutinised in order to reveal how far these units in Turkey serve for local development. Finally, findings and conclusions are summarised, and policy proposals are developed for University Continuing Education Units should follow in order to serve local development effectively.

KISS (Kinematic Support System) is a locally developed gait analysis system at Middle East Technical University (METU), and the performance of the system was evaluated before as a whole. However, such evaluations do not differentiate between the efficacy of the data acquisition system and the model-based gait analysis methodology. In this thesis, kinematic results of the KISS system will be compared with those of the Ankara University based commercial VICON (Oxford Metrics Ltd., Oxford, UK) system, in view of evaluating the performance of data acquisition system and the gait analysis methodology separately. This study is expected to provide guidelines for future developments on the KISS system.

Abstract:
Middle East Technical University (METU) campus has such an extensive area that reaching the necessary information which affects campus life, such as the locations of the buildings, classrooms, computer labs, and etc. may be very difficult for anyone who does not know the campus well, and even for a student, personnel or a graduate who had a long time in the campus. An interactive campus map and a database structure related to this map which can be accessed by multiple types of users on the Internet can display this information with its geographical locations, and will reduce the "
difficulty for reaching information"
widely. For this purpose, data of METU were collected from various sources, edited, organized, and inserted into data tables. An interactive campus map displaying the locations of the physical structures and facilities in the campus was created in Scalable Vector Grapics (SVG) standard, and published on the Internet. By JavaScript functions, the map can be browsed with map navigation tools, including zoom in, zoom out, move and information buttons, and layers control. There is a search section on the user interface, which allows users make queries to find building and classroom names, and list the buildings and facilities according to their usage and category types. Data are stored in PostgreSQL database, transmitted through PHP scripts, and can be edited by authorized users through the specialized web interfaces. Lastly, web-based implementation of the application is entirely based on open-source standards.

Abstract:

ABSTRACTEATON, KIMBERLY LINHART. Family expressiveness and emotion understanding: A meta-analysis of one aspect of parental emotion socialization. (Under the direction of Amy G. Halberstadt.)Associations between family styles of expressing emotion and children?s skill in understanding emotion were examined using a meta-analytic strategy for synthesizing the studies in this area. Moderating variables of emotion valence, age group, and measurement independence in the relationship between family expressiveness and outcomes in children were measured, as well as differences in the operationalization of expressiveness, understanding, who is the ?family?, and other research design elements. Parents? overall expressiveness and negative-submissive expressiveness exhibited a significant negative relationship with children?s emotion understanding over age. Negative family expressiveness and children?s emotion understanding tended to be curvilinearly related across age (an inverted U-shaped relationship). Explanations for these relations and future goals for research are discussed.

Abstract:
A meta-analysis is the combination of results from several similar studies, conducted by different scientists, in order to arrive at a single, overall conclusion. Unlike common experimental procedures, the data used in a meta-analysis happen to be the descriptive statistics from the distinct individual studies. In this thesis, we will consider two regression studies performed by two scientists. These studies have one common dependent variable, Y, and one or more independent common variables, X. A regression of Y on X with other independent variables is carried out on both studies. We will estimate the regression coefficients of X meta-analytically. After combining the two studies, we will derive a single regression model. There will be observations that one scientist witnesses and the other does not. The missing observations are considered parameters and are estimated using a method called Gibbs sampling.

Reimers, Anne Kerstin, Guido Knapp, and Carl-Detlev Reimers. "Effects of Exercise on the Resting Heart Rate: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Interventional Studies." MDPI AG, 2018. https://monarch.qucosa.de/id/qucosa%3A33158.

Full text
Abstract:
Resting heart rate (RHR) is positively related with mortality. Regular exercise causes a reduction in RHR. The aim of the systematic review was to assess whether regular exercise or sports have an impact on the RHR in healthy subjects by taking different types of sports into account. A systematic literature research was conducted in six databases for the identification of controlled trials dealing with the effects of exercise or sports on the RHR in healthy subjects was performed. The studies were summarized by meta-analyses. The literature search analyzed 191 studies presenting 215 samples fitting the eligibility criteria. 121 trials examined the effects of endurance training, 43 strength training, 15 combined endurance and strength training, 5 additional school sport programs. 21 yoga, 5 tai chi, 3 qigong, and 2 unspecified types of sports. All types of sports decreased the RHR. However, only endurance training and yoga significantly decreased the RHR in both sexes. The exercise-induced decreases of RHR were positively related with the pre-interventional RHR and negatively with the average age of the participants. From this, we can conclude that exercise—especially endurance training and yoga—decreases RHR. This effect may contribute to a reduction in all-cause mortality due to regular exercise or sports.

Abstract:
The methylotrophic yeast, Pichia pastoris, has been used as a protein expression system to express over 500 heterologous proteins. P. pastoris provides many advantages over other organisms that have been utilized for this purpose. In this project, we developed a new host/selectable marker and auxotrophic strains of P. pastoris based on methionine biosynthesis to increase P. pastoris's versatility as a host for homologous protein expression. This was accomplished by selecting for a yeast that is deficient in methionine biosynthesis, P. pastoris (yJC239), and gene complementation through transformation with a genomic DNA library. Bioinformatics show that the P. pastor is MET gene has 54% amino acid identity with 68% similarity to the S. cerevisiae MET2 gene, which codes for homoserine O-transacetylase. We have constructed expression vectors for intracellular and extracellular expression of proteins with the MET2 marker and have also constructed strains with various auxotrophs including me/2.

Saechsische Landesbibliothek- Staats- und Universitaetsbibliothek Dresden, 2017. http://nbn-resolving.de/urn:nbn:de:bsz:14-qucosa-230668.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Antidepressants are widely used in the treatment of chronic pain. Applied doses are lower than those needed to unfold an antidepressive effect. While efficacy of antidepressants for chronic pain has been reported in large randomized-controlled trials (RCT), there is inconsistent data on adverse effects and tolerability. We aimed at synthesizing data from RCT to explore adverse effect profiles and tolerability of antidepressants for treatment of chronic pain. Methods: Systematic literature research and meta-analyses were performed regarding side effects and safety of different antidepressants in the treatment of chronic pain according to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The National Center for Biotechnology Information library and MEDLINE were searched. Randomized placebo-controlled trials were included in quantitative data synthesis. results: Out of 1,975 screened articles, 33 papers published between 1995 and 2015 were included in our review and 23 studies were included in the meta-analyses. A higher risk for adverse effects compared to placebo was observed in all antidepressants included in our analyses, except nortriptyline. The most prevalent adverse effects were dry mouth, dizziness, nausea, headache, and constipation. Amitriptyline, mirtazapine, desipramine, venlafaxine, fluoxetine, and nortriptyline showed the highest placebo effect-adjusted risk of adverse effects. Risk for withdrawal due to adverse effects was highest in desipramine (risk ratio: 4.09, 95%-confidence interval [1.31; 12.82]) followed by milnacipran, venlafaxine, and duloxetine. The most common adverse effects under treatment with antidepressants were dry mouth, dizziness, nausea, headache, and constipation followed by palpitations, sweating, and drowsiness. However, overall tolerability was high. Each antidepressant showed distinct risk profiles of adverse effects. conclusion: Our synthesized data analysis confirmed overall tolerability of low-dose antidepressants for the treatment of chronic pain and revealed drug specific risk profiles. This encompassing characterization of adverse effect profiles might be useful in defining multimodal treatment regimens for chronic pain which also consider patients’ comorbidities and co-medication.

Lennon, Rachelle Evelyn. "A Meta-Analysis of Cultural Differences in Revenge and Forgiveness." UNF Digital Commons, 2013. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/476.

Full text
Abstract:
Revenge, the act of retaliating against a person or group in response to a perceived wrongdoing, appears to be a human universal. Those who research culture, revenge, and forgiveness have indicated cultural differences, but no clear patterns have emerged that could be useful in mediating conflicts. Thus, a meta-analysis was conducted of studies in which people from two different countries were compared on a measure of revenge or forgiveness. The countries represented were also coded based on Geert Hofstede's national culture dimensions, to test whether any specific cultural characteristics moderated desire for revenge. The final sample was made up of 16 studies, including data from 9416 participants across 16 countries. The largest cultural differences in revenge and forgiveness were observed between countries also showing the largest differences in Uncertainty Avoidance and Power Distance. Participants from countries higher in Uncertainty Avoidance and Power Distance were more likely to seek revenge and less likely to forgive, though the pattern was not statistically significant. These results indicate that, when working toward reconciliation, divergent strategies might be required for different countries and cultures based on the level of Uncertainty Avoidance and Power Distance that exist within those cultures.

Newberry, Melissa Ann. "The Positive and Negative Effects of Jealousy on Relationship Quality: A Meta-Analysis." UNF Digital Commons, 2010. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/380.

Full text
Abstract:
Several theories have been posited regarding the role of jealousy on romantic relationships. However, they differ in terms of predictions which when confirmed has resulted in conflicting results. One way to sort out mixed results is to conduct a meta-analysis. Thus, the current investigations conformed to a meta-analysis of studies wherein the association between jealousy and relationship quality had been examined. In the present investigation jealousy had a negative relationship with relationship quality. Type of jealousy experienced moderated the effect on relationships, with anxious jealousy having a stronger negative relationship. Future directions for research in the field of jealousy and relationships are addressed.

Abstract:
Thesis(M. Tech.) - Central University of Technology, Free State, 2004
Growing markets leads to an increase in production. In these modern industries, weight measurement is of high priority. Weight measurement instrumentation is used for quality control, as well as for effective process control. Ineffective instrumentation with inaccurate data will influence the production process and profit margins negatively. Experimental data is gathered from an angled load cell, placed as a crossover between two conveyer belts. A weight measurement instrument with the ability to acquire accurate measurement of individual, moving parts is produced with the aid of DSP techniques. This was accomplished by analyzing the frequency spectrum for the undesirable signals with the use of Wavelets transformations (WT) and Fourier transformations (FT). After these undesired signals were identified a digital filter was designed to remove the undesired signals. Repetition of performance is achieved by the automatic zeroing of the instrument after every individual measurement. This weight measurement instrumentation also has the ability to store data consisting of the amount of objects and their individual weights. This instrument can also determine the material of which an object is made of. This is done by calculating the friction coefficient. This function has the ability to effectively identify between iron and rubber components irrespective of their mass or area.

Levert, Dominique. "Attrition from School-Based Behavioral Parent Training Programs A Meta-Analytic Review." UNF Digital Commons, 2017. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/750.

Full text
Abstract:
Currently, very little is understood regarding the effectiveness of school-based Behavioral Parent Training (BPT) programs or associated attrition rates. The goal of the current study is to examine the effectiveness of school-based BPT programs, associated attrition rates, and possible moderator variables related to attrition. Searches within the databases EBSCOhost were conducted to find BPT programs located at schools as well as the associated attrition rates for each individual study. Mean associated attrition rates were calculated using the software Comprehensive Meta-Analysis. The mean weighted attrition rate across all trials of school-based studies was 42.2%. Significant moderators were also found to increase the risk of attrition in this study. For instance, interventions that were preventative or delivered at a Tier I level, were individually delivered, involved participants from non-disadvantaged backgrounds and targeted behaviors classified as mixed/comorbid. Additionally, the number of sessions and the average age of child/parent moderated the weighted associated attrition rate. Insignificant results were found for program provider and caregiver attending. Comparisons between results from this study and the clinic-based literature are discussed as well as directions for future research.

This dissertation deals with the evaluation of the implementation process of the National Examination of Student Performance (ENADE) at the Federal University of Cearà (UFC), trying to understand the concepts and the uses to which the coordinators of undergraduate courses conceive the practice of institutional evaluation. For this, we carried out a meta-evaluation from the perspective of an in-depth evaluation (LEJANO, 2012; L. C. RODRIGUES, 2008), aiming to: (a) build the historical background of SINAES from its proposals, objectives and purposes to its implementation in the context of UFC and national public policies for higher education, especially the ENADE; (b) analyze the strategies, processes and UFC managementâs actions directed to coordination of undergraduate courses in the realization of ENADE; (c) know and understand the uses and meanings attributed by managers selected to the results and processes triggered by the completion of ENADE in the development of undergraduate courses at UFC. It was used in the evaluative research methodology, quantitative and mainly qualitative approach, in conjunction with the theoretical discussion of the concepts institutional evaluation, meta-evaluation and university. We conducted the research through a literature and documentary review, questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The survey was conducted with coordinators of undergraduate and PROGRAD managers, and applied 42 questionnaires with closed and open questions and interviewed 13 people. The results of evaluative research suggest that ENADE, as public policy of evaluation of higher education institutions, is reframed and experienced at UFC differently to the purposes for which it was originally proposed. The conclusions of the research indicate that the ENADE at UFC is perceived and experienced as institutional assessment from the perspective of monitoring, control and regulation.
