Abstract: In 1220, the first statutes referring to the “University of Physicians of Montpellier” indicate that a collective organization already existed there. These statutes followed on at least a century of medical teaching and practice. We study the origins of this “birth” in conjunction with an analysis of the physicians’ backgrounds, an identification of their knowledge, the development of their reputation and the changes in their cultural, economic, social and political surroundings – all in the very unique circumstances making Montpellier a pioneering institution. Keywords: University of

Abstract This two-part chapter considers the case of Edward Young (1683–1765), poet and Fellow of All Souls. Young entered All Souls in 1708 and left twenty-two years later when he secured a Church living in the College’s gift. He divided his time between Oxford and literary London, writing poetry and plays with an eye to securing potential political and ecclesiastical patrons. He achieved international fame with his Night Thoughts (1742–5), a long blank-verse poem mourning three bereavements and arguing for the consolation of immortal life after death. In the second part of the chapter Catriona Seth considers the fortune of the Night Thoughts in French translation and the importance granted to the scene of Narcissa’s burial. She shows how the question of memorialisation became a hot topic in Montpellier where, possibly because of an erroneous footnote, many a literary pilgrimage was undertaken to pay respect to ‘Young’s daughter’.

Abstract:
Abstract It is convenient, if overly schematic, to view the development of the medieval medical faculty at Montpellier in terms of generations, each represented by a writer or writers: an unsophisticated first generation, in which glosses on standard texts become commentaries (i.e., Henry of Winchester, ca. 1220); a second generation in which the commentare form blossoms (i.e., Cardinalis, ca. 1250); a third generation in which authors begin to compose independent medical treatises (Arnau de Vilanova and Bernard de Gordon, ca. 1300); and even perhaps a fourth and a fifth generation in the fourteenth century in which learning and scholastic elaboration attain new heights (Gerard de Solo, ca. 1330, and Joan de Tornamira, ca. 1370). Of these five generations, the third has received the most attention from historians because of the unusual number of compositions left by Arnau and Bernard. So prolific were these two authors, in fact, that it becomes all too easy to concentrate on their work and to forget their lesser-known contemporaries who may also be able to add to our knowledge of university life. At least three other figures from the medical school in this ‘third generation’ left behind medical works that illuminate their thought: Pierre de Capestang, Bernard de Angrara, and Guillem de Beziers, the figure who will concern us here. Guillem is of particular interest first because he moved away from the commentary framework when he composed for his students his unpublished Informatio scolaribus suis (which appears in an edition below); second, because recent research in the Catalan archives-some results of which are appended to this article-provides details about Guillem’s early career that place his achievement in a better biographical context.

Abstract ValÉry, paul (1871–1945): French poet and essayist. Son of a French father and an Italian mother, Paul Valéry attended the School of Law at Montpellier University in 1889, but left, accepting that he was deplorable at the law. In this decision he was influenced by a fellow student, the poet Pierre *Louÿs, and a visiting author, André *Gide, who helped him discover contemporary French literature. Valéry worked at the War Department during the Dreyfus case and wrote little from 1900 to 1917. Then, encouraged by Gide to write, he published his first book of poetry, La Jeune Parque and became famous overnight at the age of forty-six.

Abstract Gustave Malecot was born on 28 December 1911 at La Grande Croix (Loire), near Saint-Etienne, in a Protestant family. His tastes carried him towards philosophy, Latin and mathematics. In October 1932, he entered the prestigious Ecole Normale Superieure on Ulm street in Paris. He attended lectures of famous mathematicians such as Emile Borel, Elie Cartan, Maurice Frechet and Georges Darmois. In 1935, he completed his course of academic studies and came out second in the ’Agregation de mathematiques’. His taste for applied mathematics brought him closer to Georges Darmois, who retained him in Paris from 1935 to 1939 and proposed the subject of his thesis. From 1940 to 1942 he was an instructor of mathematics at the high school in Saint Etienne, from 1940 to 1944, lecturer in mathematics at the University of Montpellier, and from 1944 to 1981, Professor of mathematics at the University of Lyon.

Abstract THERE is a consensus that the audience for medieval motets comprised ‘an educated élite’, ‘the intellectual élite’, ‘the educated’, or ‘men of letters’, and that motets were enjoyed in ‘very exclusive social circles’. It is apparent that these observations are basically the same, and the next chapter will be concerned with the evidence upon which they are based. For the moment, let us look in a slightly different direction. The author of one text in the Montpellier codex says that he has ‘often found many a clerk, cowl set aside, who doesn’t insist that there be a debate on logic’, and it is generally accepted that the Ars antiqua motet is connected with the recreation of masters and students in the University of Paris.

François Morvan of the Université de Montpellier, using the inexpensive dimethyl phosphite, optimized (Tetrahedron Lett. 2008, 49, 3288) the free radical reduction of 1 to 2. Pawan K. Sharma of Kurukshetra University found (Tetrahedron Lett. 2008, 48, 8704) that NaBH4 in the presence of a catalytic amount of RuCl3.xH2 O reduced monosubstituted and disubstituted alkenes, such as 3, to the corresponding alkanes. Note that benzyl ethers were stable to these conditions. Ken Suzuki of Asahi Kasei Chemicals and Shun-Ichi Murahashi of Okayama University of Science established conditions (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2008, 47, 2079) for the oxidation of primary amines such as 5 to oximes. Both ketoximes such as 6 and aldoximes were prepared using this protocol. Primary and secondary alcohols were stable to these conditions. Three noteworthy procedures for the oxidation of an aldehyde to the acid oxidation state were recently reported. Jonathan M. J. Williams of the University of Bath demonstrated (Chem. Commun. 2008, 624) that crotonitrile could serve as the hydrogen acceptor in the oxidation of an aldehyde 7 to the methyl ester 8. Note that isolated alkenes were stable to these conditions. Vikas N. Telvekar the University Institute of Chemical Technology, Mumbai improved (Tetrahedron Lett . 2008, 49, 2213) the oxidative amination of an aldehyde 9 to the nitrile 10. G. Sekar of the Indian Institute of Technology Madras effected (Tetrahedron Lett. 2008, 49, 1083) oxidation of an aldehyde 11 to the acid 12, under conditions that would be expected to not oxidize a primary or secondary alcohol. J. S. Yadav of the Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, Hyderabad observed (Tetrahedron Lett. 2008, 49, 3015) that the activation of a thiophenol 14 with N-chlorosuccimide generated a species that added regioselectively to a ketone 13 to give the thioether 15. Oxidation of the sulfide 15 followed by heating of the resulting sulfoxide would give the enone 16. This appears to be an easily scalable procedure. It is well known that an acid 17 and an amine 18 will condense at elevated temperature to give the amide 20.

Abstract:
A new generation of Alkaline earth sulfides (MgS, CaS, and BaS) doped with rare-earth ions have been identified by the University of Montpellier as the very high sensitivity of these phosphors, the short time constant of the luminescence and the perfectly separated spectra enable many applications in real time and online dosimetry. The online detecting technology of optically stimulated luminescent (OSL) radiation dosimeter main make use of the OSL characteristics of doping the alkaline-earth metal sulphides, makes the material into the thin films for storing energy from Ionizing radiation, th
