Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
This thesis compares the strategies deployed by two international solidarity networks - the neo-Zapatista movement, based in Chiapas, Mexico, and the Israel/Palestine anti-occupation movement - to publicly communicate the political causes they espouse in an activist context dominated by the development of global justice frameworks (1994-2006). The study adopts a constructivist approach, closely exploring the pratical dynamics of the international circulation of global justice ideas and actors, and is particularly concerned with the role played by activist media in this process. It argues that the partial convergence of collective action frameworks is the result of a series of tactical choices and internalised constraints, which have together favoured the development of discourses of struggle which are relatively independent of their social contexts of production. I undertook fieldwork comprising 76 semi-directive interviews with activists and journalists, a series of observations in "alternative media" centres, and archival work. The comparison of the media repertoires of each network enables the identification of the progressive specialisation of activists in the work of alternative mediatisation. Part I of the thesis focuses on the processes of internationalisation of movement political capital. Part II highlights the existence of a negative correlation between the development of conventional media coverage and activist investment in "alternative media" networks, which may function as spaces of compensation or of symbolic correction. Finally, Part III analyses the material conditions of production, diffusion and institutionalisation of media activism in each of the two networks

Burg, Damon. "International university partnerships : a cost-benefit analysis." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2017. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/417788/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study’s purpose is to examine academic partnerships between universities in the United Kingdom and Korea. It aims to examine both partnership fundamentals and what leads to a mutually successful partnership. The fundamentals are the why, who and where. It aims to examine partnership formation and the relationships between partners, and the impacts of the partnership on the university. This study uses qualitative interviews mixed with a cost-benefit analysis. The interviews serve two main purposes. The first is to gain a fine-grained analysis of why universities create partnerships and how they go about it. The second is to understand the partnership factors that impact universities. These impact factors are then used to create cost-benefit analyses of three different UK-Korea university partnerships, differentiated by intensity of partnerships, to illustrate the partnerships’ impacts on the individual universities. Through thematic analysis, the qualitative results show that different types of partnerships are created in different parts of the university. The central offices create development co-operation and exchange partnerships, whereas the academic units create more exchange and commercial trade partnerships. However, in each of these partnerships, funding and international rankings are key motivations. The cost-benefit analysis shows that partnerships are beneficial to universities with commercial trade partnerships the most beneficial. The implications are that the academic units should work to create academic partnerships, with the central office helping in terms of standardisation and with the pastoral aspects of student services.

Sengupta, Enakshi. "Integration in an international university in Malaysia." Thesis, University of Nottingham, 2015. http://eprints.nottingham.ac.uk/28878/.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the current study is to investigate the relationship between experiences with diversity offered in an international university in Malaysia and the ways students and staff view integration. The problem that promoted this study arose from the researcher’s own experience of being an international student with difficulties in integrating in a multi-cultural environment in the university. Two outcomes are investigated in this study, the meaning of the term ‘integration’ as viewed by the students and staff and the conscious effort that is being implemented by authority and the students themselves towards achieving an optimal level of integration. This research intends to investigate the gap between the ideal level of integration and the existing level, and offer solution towards bridging the gap. Although several studies have been conducted in the past that extol the benefits of being educated in a more racially diverse environment, it is a relatively new area of educational research especially in the South Asian context and in Malaysia. Malaysia is on its way to becoming a hub for international students. The policy-makers in Malaysian higher education realize that with the influx of foreign students comes the issue of integrating these students and faculty that have come from other countries. This study had been designed to bridge the gap that exists between the local and international students and with the local community outside the campus. Findings from the study along with the theories from the literature review present the current scenario on integration and the recommendations suggest a way forward for the institution to reduce inter-group prejudices and foster optimal integration in the campus. The thesis begins with an introduction to the current scenario and summarizes the meaning of the term integration, race and ethnicity and its relevance to the concept of internationalisation as proposed by exponents in this field of research. The thesis then elaborates on the context of the study with the focus on Malaysian Higher Education policies and policies on internationalisation as drafted by the University of Nottingham and the relevance of such policies towards the study. The researcher explores literature found in this field of work and selects three theories to form the foundation of the study. The chapter on the literature review explains the theories in detail and how these three theories have been used to explore the current study. The research methodology is explained with the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus being chosen as a single case study to help focus attention on the case. A mixed method was used in designing the research, combining both quantitative and qualitative research methods in different ways, where both distinctive approaches contribute towards an understanding of the phenomenon. Quantitative research was conducted with 291 students from various departments in the second and third year of their studies and qualitative interviews were conducted with 15 participants comprising students and members of the teaching and administrative staff. The findings were analysed using SPSS version 20 and NVivo software. The analysis of the quantitative data was further discussed and the data showed that more than half the participants lacked clarity on the meaning of the word integration and its significance in their lives. Students and staff members showed a lack of clarity and understanding of the policies promoted by the university to foster integration. Students preferred being in their homogeneous race groups when it came to their academic activities. They also preferred spending their leisure time with students of their own race. The students were appreciative of the fact that the faculty respects every student equally and tries consciously to mix the races in assignment groups. The study revealed the complexity of the perception-practice dynamic, and the multi-faceted factors which influence student perception and behaviour in relation to optimal integration. Taking the findings from relevant literature and the results of the present study into account, recommendations for the university have been formulated regarding student integration. The recommendations consist of a clear vision and realistic goals in terms of integration. Recommendations also consist of promoting intercultural exchange through inculcating diversity in the curriculum and promoting intercultural interaction between international students and the local community outside the university campus and to carefully monitor integration and react appropriately to changes. The thesis ends with a conclusion summarizing the key findings, the significance of the study, limitations of the study and the scope for future research. The study recommends interventions to be used at different stages to measure and monitor the impact of such interventions towards creating optimal integration in the university and reduce the prejudice prevalent amongst racial groups in the campus at present.

Abstract:

The study aims to examine the factors that influenced the international students when selecting Karlstad University as an institution. The study also contains a secondary aim which is to examine how the international students evaluate their experiences in Karlstad. Further the study is built upon four research questions, where the three first research questions can be referred to the main aim whereas the fourh research question can be referred to the secondary aim. The main aim is by the research questions divided into a three step process, the factor that influnced the international students to study abroad, to study in Sweden and to study at Karlstad University. The fourth research question which concerns the secondary aim is about how the international students evaluate their stay in Karlstad.

The enquiry has been made with help of a questionnaire, which 98 of the international students at Karlstad University answered. The study showed that factors that influenced the international students to study abroad was to gain better understanding of the foreign language and the foreign culture. The students were also influenced by the student life and the life experiences that they would gain by studying abroad. They also stated that the value of their resume would be higher because of these studies. Factors that influenced the students to study in Sweden was i.a the factor of knowledge and awareness. A majority found the knowledge of Sweden, the reputations of the institution quality, the awareness of the quality of the education as influencing factors. The students also found it easy to obtain information about Sweden, which is very good since this factor is a great contribution to knowledge and awareness. The answers showed that a small majority of the students were influenced by low fees and by recommendations from authorized representatives. The students were influenced by low crime and low racial discrimination factors, such as factors of clean environment and an exiting place to live in. The influencing factors of studying at Karlstad University were the reputation for quality, the reputation of institution staff, the broad range of courses and programs and the the good facilities. However many of the students stated that they choose Karlstad University because of the agreements between Karlstad University and the home University. As the students were asked to evaluate their stay in Karlstad, they seemd to be satisfied with the quality of education, the facilities, the student accomodations, the students life and Karlstad as a city.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine if significant differences existed in attitudes of international students concerning college withdrawal. Data collection involved 200 freshmen international students from two universities in Texas. Two questionnaires were distributed to the students to determine attitudes toward college withdrawal. The instrument used to score the attitudes was the Purdue Master Attitude Scale. The analysis of variance was used for the statistical evaluation. The statistics indicated there was no significant differences between the students tested in the study and that the students had favorable attitudes toward college and unfavorable attitudes toward college withdrawal. Based on the findings of this study, universities should devise an extensive counseling and orientation program in order to provide students opportunities to complete their college education.

The purpose of this study was to determine which types of student application information, as well as demographic information obtained through a questionnaire after matriculation, best predicted later academic performance in an international English-medium university in Japan, and to examine the "big picture" of how cognitive and non-cognitive variables interact over time in accounting for student success in an English for Academic Purposes (EAP) program and in the regular university program. The study was divided into three parts that separately examined student application information, university entrance examinations, and the larger picture of student success. In the first part of the study, a hierarchical multiple regression was employed to determine the extent to which a variety of variables derived from application information predicted grade point average (GPA) in the EAP program, as well as first-year GPA and final GPA in the regular university program. The independent variables examined in the main regression analysis were: high school grade point average (HSGPA); ITP TOEFL scores obtained in April of the students' first year at the university; and hensachi rankings of the students' high schools. Results indicated that HSGPA was a consistently significant predictor of all levels of university GPA. ITP TOEFL scores significantly predicted EAP GPA, and hensachi

The number of students studying away from their home countries is increasing. These students face various challenges when studying abroad, including meeting their information needs. This study investigated the information needs of international students at the University of Malaya. A questionnaire was designed and distributed to 70 students, of whom 54 (77.1%) responded. It was found the main information needs were related to the university, the faculty, and their programs of study. The students used the library in attempting to meet their information needs, although the frequency of library usage was generally low. The main barriers in seeking information were language related, and unfamiliarity with the library or-ganization and mission. Language proficiency appeared to be a barrier in being able to meet the information needs. Although the majority of the students considered themselves to be computer and Internet literate, but that did not have a relationship on the problems they faced in meeting the information needs.

Abstract:
Thesis (MEd)--Stellenbosch University, 2015.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Higher education is challenged by the changing climate created by globalisation and the phenomenon of internationalisation. Internationalisation of higher education provides a platform for institutions to engage with counterparts across the world in a manner that would enhance the quality of all aspects of the institution, but also poses a number of challenges to institutions and higher education systems. The literature review of the study sketches the background to the study and analyses some of the above-mentioned opportunities and challenges. The study researched one aspect of internationalisation, namely the mobility of undergraduate students. The mobility of students can take place through an array of activities that includes summer school programmes, internships, or tailored short programmes. This study focuses on one type of mobility, namely an international exchange semester. The study stemmed from the actual problem at Stellenbosch University where a major imbalance exists in the number of students received from partner universities and of Stellenbosch students taking part in a semester at the partner university. The rationale and practice of international exchange semesters in four Faculties were analysed on multiple levels by means of a case study design. The four case studies were concluded in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Science, the Faculty of AgriSciences and the Faculty of Economic and Management Sciences, and within these Faculties the investigation was restricted to general-formative programmes. Data were collected and analysed at four levels of each Faculty, namely the climate that is created through Faculty strategy, the views and perspectives of students in their final and pre-final year, the view and perspectives of programme coordinators, and finally, the views on a managerial level by means of the inputs of deputy deans. Each of the case studies reveals specific issues and opportunities for international exchange semesters within the particular Faculty, yet, the comparative perspectives reveal that the major barriers to student mobility are consistent across faculties, and that particularly the type of information available, the applicability of that information within the particular academic environment and financial aspects are consistently identified by students in all four Faculties. The barriers identified by staff, both on departmental and management level, resonate with the barriers identified by students, but further illustrate more specific organisational and pedagogical challenges linked to the implementation of international exchange semesters. The study not only makes a contribution to a deeper understanding of existing challenges pertaining to international mobility by means of an exchange semester but it also makes specific recommendations to address these challenges and poses alternatives to existing practices.

Abstract:
The primary purpose of this study is to outline the institutional structure and to present an historical survey of international education and the Foreign Student Programs at Ball State University. An effort has also been made to relate the Ball State experience to international students on a national level. To make this information valuable in a readily usable form, an intensive study has been made of the history, development and expansion of the international student program at Ball State from 1945 through 1980.Major Points of the StudyChapter One reviews the history of international students in the United States from its beginning at Yale in 1784 through the year 1980. Also this chapter discusses the United States government's role in international education and exchange programs which began in the early 1900s and promoted foreign study to the point that the United States by the 1960s was educating more than a quarter of the world's international students.Chapter Two carefully examines the history of international students at Ball State University from its beginning in 1945 through 1980. Discussed are the program's year of origin, its development (1950-1965) and the expansion era (1965-1980). Especially emphasized are the roles of five International Student Program Directors and the contributions they made to both the program and the students.Chapter Three provides information about the population of overseas students at Ball State, the number of students enrolled, and the region and origin of countries from which they came. This chapter concludes with a section discussing the reasons why foreign students chose Ball State for study.Chapter Four studies the academic experiences of international students at Ball State detailing their academic status, number of undergraduate and graduate students, fields of study and number of degrees granted.Chapter Five reviews the status of foreign students after graduation. It provides information on the number of students who returned to their home countries, the number of students who continued their education and the students who remained permanently in the United States. Also this chapter discusses the value that American education and training had for Ball State international students. The chapter concludes with a section on Ball State contacts and relationship with its foreign alumni.

Weidman, Diana L. "ANALYSIS OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENT ENROLLMENTS AT A FLORIDA PUBLIC UNIVERSITY." Doctoral diss., University of Central Florida, 2005. http://digital.library.ucf.edu/cdm/ref/collection/ETD/id/2577.

Full text
Abstract:
This study sought to determine if international student admissions at a public university had been affected by the events on September 11, 2001. To accomplish this, an analysis was conducted comparing international and domestic students' application rates, number of acceptances and enrollments for the fall semesters from 1998 through 2004 on data obtained from University of South Florida. The USF population data were also compared to enrollments in the U.S. for the respective years. Analyses on application frequencies and student enrollments comparing colleges of major and regions of origin were also performed. Generally, although statistical significance was found in many comparisons, the results of the chi square analyses found that no real effects were present, particularly when comparing USF international and domestic student populations. The chi square analyses comparing USF enrollments to the U.S. population from 1998 to 2003 also found no real effect. The analyses of the proportions of international graduate and domestic student enrollments and applications before and after September 11, 2001, also found no relationship. However, the analyses on world regions found that proportions of students from the Mideast declined from before to after Fall 2001 but other regions increased. Additionally, for graduate students, the proportion of Chinese students declined after 2001. Descriptive statistics indicated that international students majoring in engineering declined after 2001. The literature review found there were many factors in influencing the international student population in the U.S. including competition from other countries for students, the expense of a U.S education and changes in the U.S. regulations for issuing student visas. In general, the literature supported a decline in the number of overseas students coming to the U.S. to study. While the USF enrollments seemed to be consistent with the literature, no conclusive evidence indicated this decline was a result of the events of September 11, 2001.

Abstract:
The University of Tokyo (UTokyo) is one of the leading Asian universities. The University of Tokyo Forests (UTF) was established in 1894 as the first university forest in Asia. To date, UTF owns seven forests and has accumulated long-term data regarding forest ecosystems, conifer plantations, and selection cutting with natural regeneration, in addition to data regarding meteorology and hydrology. In terms of quantity and quality, this longitudinal dataset is among the best available in the world of forest science. A teaching staff of 26 people belongs to UTF. The advantages of studying under the supervision of UTF staff members are as follows. First, students have the opportunity to gain broad disciplinary knowledge from the 26 members of the teaching staff. Second, they can use UTF as a context for their research fieldwork, relying on good research facilities supported by a 50-strong technical staff. Third, they can utilize longitudinal data accumulated by UTF over a period of more than 100 years. Students from at least ten countries have been supervised at UTF. Students are selected, in particular, from China, Thailand, Indonesia, Myanmar, and Sri Lanka. UTF has also provided fieldwork classes for students of foreign universities, such as Universiti Malaysia Sabah and the National Taiwan University. These students gain experience in disciplines such as forest vegetation and forest management, where Japanese practice differs from that of their own countries. Students can stay at UTF lodges for a modest fee. Students from European universities are also welcome to undertake fieldwork courses at UTF. We accept interns from overseas. Recently, interns from European universities have been increasing in number. The unique culture of Japan - with its traditional features and more modern ones, like the Japanese comics manga - are fascinating to European students. UTF provides the best environment for forest education in Asia.

Abstract:

Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.
Includes bibliographical references (pages 65-67).
Since the appropriate technology movement of the 1970s, technology and engineering from developed countries have played a role in international development. In recent years, universities have created graduate-level programs that look to engage students to solve challenges faced by resource-constrained communities globally by leveraging technology and innovation. These projects must balance the need for graduate students to produce scholarly research and the objective of creating impactful interventions for the world's poor and marginalized population. Furthermore, these projects must be conducted responsibly, remotely, and in fulfillment of project sponsors. This thesis explores two projects to better understand such engineering for development initiatives. The first project is a technology evaluation project that aimed to design and employ methodologies to determine which products in the "developing world" worked best. Specifically, the project's first evaluation on solar lanterns used in Uganda is described. The second project is a technology development project that sought to develop a scalable electricity grid technology platform to provide universal electricity access in India. The two projects are documented as case studies and conceptualized as design processes, specifically product development processes. Through the lens of the structured product development process, selected aspects of the cases are further explained and secondary literature serves as a basis for suggesting alternative design decisions and actions. Although the successes and failures of the two cases are not assessed in this work, the analysis suggests that technology-focused graduate-level projects in international development may explore alternative approaches that more carefully consider (1) early-stage planning, (2) contextualization of the technology focus, (3) project timescales, and (4) the intent of community engagement. Further work is needed to document and analyze the processes of other projects in this space and to understand how they vary. The product development process may be a useful tool in understanding how these projects might systematically achieve both scholarly and international development impact through the use of design and engineering.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on the transformation of identities of international master students attending Örebro University along with their perception of how this experience will affect their future. A qualitative content analysis of 10 semi-structured interviews was employed to explore the topic and answer the research questions. The thesis is guided by the theoretical background that stands on the synthesis of Jenkins’ perception of identity and the identity theory, supplemented by the understanding of international students as ‘student travellers’. The analysis of respondents’ narratives revealed that all aspects of their identity were affected. International students, throughout their stay abroad, live in a certain bubble as they distance themselves from the society on one hand and identify with the international students’ group on the other, affecting their social identity. However, before a new identity is formed and while the old one is being changed, the students experience a state of limbo during which uncertainty of roles emerges. Their person identity is influenced as well due to the international experience providing an opportunity to consciously alter some aspects of personality and, furthermore, to promote their independence, open-mindedness, and awareness of other cultures. Additionally, through contact with these other cultures, the international student develops into a person of two minds – international and of the country of their origin. In regards to the students’ perception of the future, the desire to stay international, to travel and live abroad is essential in creating something of a nomad life. Moreover, the respondents considered the international experience to have a positive impact on their career through an advantageous position over others along with the acquisition of an international network.

Abstract:
Many educational institutions in Hong Kong are committed to the promotion of students' intercultural understanding, global awareness, respect for different beliefs and cultures, international mindedness, and the nurture of global citizens or inter-culturally competent students. There are a number of research studies on intercultural learning which were conducted in a range ofcontexts with a variety of student groups. Most ofthese studi.es focus on the intercultural learning experience of sojourners (international students) in a host country. Far less is known about the intercultural learning experience ofhosts (native/domestic students). This research study investigates pre-university students' intercultural competence as a possible outcome of an international education in Hong Kong. Students' intercultural competence was assessed based on four interdependent areas of intercultural learning, which included intercultural awareness, intercultural understanding, foreign/second language appreciation and ability, and adaptability. The study uses a multi-method research design based on an application of the social cognitive theory to understand intercultural competence by emphasising the environmental and social context together with personal elements. A combination of quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection was used, namely, student questionnaire, student interviews, teacher questionnaire and documentary analysis. AIl the first year students (131) ofthe international school were invited to participate in the questionnaire and a sample of 10 students participated in the interviews. In addition, 31 students from local secondary schools were invited to participate as the control group. Research findings indicated that students of the international school demonstrated a higher degree of intercultural competence and a higher measure. of self-efficacy than students studying in local schools. Noticeably, findings revealed the importance of a supportive multicultural learning environment and a curriculum committed to the promotion of intercultural understanding for the development of students' intercultural competence. The research further suggested that the experience benefited student sojourners as well as hosis, and girls were found to score slightly higner than boys. Two directions for 'future work are recommended. First, although the student questionnaire was validated 119 participants, further efforts should be made to validate and test the psychometric properties of the leeS with other populations. Second, future research should incorporate other international schools to further investigate the relationships between intercultural competence, self-efficacy, and the environmental context. Keywords: intercultural competence, self-efficacy, international school, pre-university students

Abstract:
Teaching in the field of public health needs to employ a global perspective to account for the fact that public health problems and solutions have global determinants and implications as well. International university partnerships can promote such a perspective through the strengthening of cooperation, exchange, and communication between academic institutions across national boundaries. As an example for such an academic network in the field of public health, we introduce the International Public Health Partnership—a collaboration between a university in Germany and universities in India, Turkey, and Nigeria. Formed in 2005, it facilitated the exchange of information, fostered discussion about the transferability of public health concepts, contributed to the structural development of the universities involved, and promoted an intercultural dialog through a combination of local and distance learning activities. Although well accepted by students and staff, different obstacles were encountered; these included limited external funding, scarce own financial, time and personnel resources, and diverging regulations and structures of degree programs at the partnership sites. In the present article, we share several lessons that we learned during our joint collaboration and provide recommendations for other universities that are involved in partnerships with institutions of higher education or are interested to initiate such collaborations.

Full text
Abstract:
This is a study of international East Asian (Chinese, Taiwanese, Japanese, Thai and Korean) postgraduate students' experience of adjustment (n=40) at a university in the UK in the year 2004/5. It is an empirical case study which investigates English language adjustment, academic adjustment and sociocultural adjustment. It employs a mix of methods - questionnaire, research diary, and interviews, in order to achieve triangulation for validity and reliability. Data were coded in order and grouped into themes. Findings were reported in eight narrative accounts of individual students, in a thematic description, and in models of integration and adjustment. It was found that, overall, East Asian students were largely positive and the study describes strategies used to address difficulties and challenges. However one example of failure in the university (i. e. an unhappy experience) was given. The study presents the notion of an "Integrated international student experience" to help understand the experience of the sojourner in an academic institution. This research has made a significant contribution to the literature on adjustment and transition of international students in the UK. In addition, using narrative accounts to present data has also contributed to methodological issues in studying living and study abroad.

Abstract:
In the context of the transition of societies towards sustainable development, the role of universities is increasingly highlighted. In this respect, assessment, as a support tool for organizations whishing to improve their performance, can be of great assistance. Opportunities for the application of assessment remains however limited. The university and sustainability are normative objects and their definition is subject to considerable opposition. In addition, their reality is progressive and characterized by high levels of uncertainty and paradoxical complexity. This work aims to determine the conditions under which assessment practices can support, or otherwise hinder, the performances of universities toward sustainability. It comes in two parts. The first part focuses on the theoretical construction of an evaluation norm for the "sustainable performances of universities". It is based on a comprehensive review of the specific features of the university and sustainability, as well as on an analysis of several best practices identified internationally. The second part compares and strengthens those findings by focussing on the design of an operational assessment methodology. This research was conducted through a multi- stakeholder participatory process that led to the building of a multidimensional framework comprising more than 50 indicators. This tool aims to be a contribution to the development of assessment methods for academic actors willing to identify ways of improving their performances with respect to sustainability

Abstract:
The aim of this study was to produce a grounded theory to describe the experiences of international students living in the UK and studying in a British university, and to understand and explain their behavioural responses to those experiences. Eighteen postgraduate international students were interviewed at a university in the south-west of England and the data was analysed using classic grounded theory methodology. The theory proposes that international students’ two biggest concerns are in regard to their English language skills and their detachment from home students. Students felt that their language skills were inadequate and they perceived themselves to be disadvantaged because of having to operate in a second language. They felt ignored when they attempted to reach out to home students and as a result they turned to co-nationals and recreated their home environment. International students were surprised at the size of the challenge they faced when they took up their studies and had to work hard to bridge the gap that existed between their academic and sociocultural skills and those needed in the UK. International students provided emotional, practical and academic support to each other but the academic support they offered to each other was not always good quality. International students engaged in a process of identity change during their stay in the UK which reflected the multiple and changing nature of their identities and during which they gained the skills they needed to be academically successful.

Abstract:

There is an extreme underrepresentation of indigenous peoples within American study abroad programs, and student participants rarely gain an authentic experience, awareness, and intercultural sensitivity towards such groups. This case study seeks to address this disparity through the creation of a new geography short-term study abroad program titled, “Resources and Indigenous Peoples of Oceania”, at the University of Missouri. This program is based on providing geographic opportunities for students to experience the diverse physical landscapes of New Zealand and interact with the local Maori indigenous people and their culture. The Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS) is used both before and after the study abroad program to measure changes in student participants’ indigenous intercultural sensitivity, as well as student program journal entries and final papers. The goal of this case study is to discover whether or not a study abroad program with a focus on elements of indigenous culture can actually improve students’ intercultural sensitivity towards such groups.
