Abstract:

Abstract:
In 1965, the Dutch computer scientist Edsger Dijkstra (1930–2002), then professor of mathematics at the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (THE) in the Netherlands, wrote a paper titled “Programming Considered as a Human Activity” and thereby announced the birth of a movement to which he gave the name structured programming a few years later. Within the next 10 years, the movement would cause so much upheaval in the realm of programming, some came to call it a revolution—the structured programming revolution—and Dijkstra was viewed as its originator. The movement did not precipitate an overthrow of the stored-program computing paradigm as a whole, but insofar as designing and building soft ware systems was a major component of this paradigm, structured programming altered the very essence of the subparadigm in computer science that came to be called programming methodology. It brought about a new mentality concerning programming and its methodology. A major part of this mini-revolution actually occurred during the 1970s, but its foundations were laid during the second half of the 1960s by just a handful of publications. And Edsger Dijkstra was the revolutionary-in-chief. He laid out the gospel. Dijkstra’s undergraduate training was in mathematics and physics at the University of Leyden; he went on to obtain a PhD in computing in 1959 from the Mathematics Centrum in the University of Amsterdam and worked there until 1962 before accepting a chair in mathematics at the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven. As a computer scientist, mathematics was a source of inspiration for him, not only in terms of the method-of-proof construction, but also in the mathematician’s search for beauty in mathematical reasoning. He quoted 19th-century English logician and mathematician George Boole, who spoke of perfectness in mathematical reasoning not just in terms of efficiency, but also in whether a method exhibited “a certain unity and harmony.” And he tells us that contrary to the tacit assumption on the part of many that such aesthetic considerations as harmony and elegance were unaffordable luxuries in the hurly-burly world of programming, it actually paid to cultivate elegance. This became a mantra for him.

Abstract:
When a material is stretched beyond its elastic limit, the atoms and molecules begin to slide over each other. This is called plasticity, and is dominated by the motion of defects in the crystal structure of the material, notably line defects called dislocations. The structure and magnitude of a dislocation is defined by its Burgers vector, which is a topological constant for a given dislocation line in a given material, so there is an effective Burgers equation: b = constant. This chapter describes: the structure of edge; screw and mixed dislocations and their associated line energy; the way in which dislocations are generated and interact under stress, leading to the yield point, work hardening and a permanent set in the material; and the use during manufacturing of deformation processing, annealing, recovery and recrystallisation. Jan Burgers’ early life in Arnhem at the beginning of the 20th century is described, as are: his time as a student with the charismatic but depressive Paul Ehrenfest, who later committed suicide; his appointment as the first Professor of Aerodynamics at Technische Universiteit Delft at a time of massive growth in the aviation industry; his contributions to aerodynamic and hydrodynamic flow as well as major Dutch engineering projects such as the Zuiderzee dams and the Maas river tunnel; his growing disaffection with the commercialisation of science and its use in warfare; and his philosophical dalliance with Soviet communism and then American capitalism.

Abstract:
Abstract Late in the 20th century, the historical and modern forces that cause population declines and extinctions converged on amphibian species in ways that accelerated population and species losses in frogs and salamanders. As mentioned in chapter 1, recent analyses by Kim Roelants and colleagues at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and by Malcolm McCallum at Texas A&M University reached similar conclusions using different methods: The late 20th century extinction rate for amphibians is between 200 and 2700 times greater than the extinction rate for the class Amphibia over the last 350 million years. The fact that amphibians disappeared in protected areas such as nature reserves, which by definition humans “reserve” for protecting species and conserving biodiversity, drew the world’s attention to the general importance of explaining these losses, because they signaled that habitat restrictions alone could not protect amphibians, or, probably, other organisms. Cornelia Dean, a reporter for the New York Times, wrote: “Conservation organizations that work to preserve biologically rich landscapes are confronting a painful realization: In an era of climate change, many of their efforts may be insufficient or beside the point.” At least for amphibians, “conservation as usual” was not working, which raised the general question: What constitutes a nature reserve at the start of the 21st century? In some cases, a reserve of last resort is a zoo, aquarium, or other conservation facility—but more about that possibility in the next chapter.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on Viktor Kel'ner's biography of M. M. Vinaver. Kel'ner makes several strategic choices that frame the biography. First and foremost is the focus on Vinaver and Russian society. Kel'ner's approach emerges from his belief that Vinaver's main contribution was the idea, in theory and praxis, that only by embracing Russian liberalism would Jews gain their rights. This viewpoint became a fundamental truth for Vinaver and was realized in his professional, political, and personal life, as well as in his lifelong attachment to the Kadet Party and its ideals. Fittingly, the biography hones in on Vinaver in Russian and Russian Jewish political life. His broad involvement in Jewish cultural and historical activities receives less attention. Ultimately, the book's focus on the Russian context offers a wide lens on the Russian Jewish intelligentsia as a whole.

Järnland, Erik, Fredrik Garcia, and Elin Wihlborg.
