Abstract:
INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of violence in intimate relationships, suffered or perpetrated, was estimated among undergraduate students, be it physical, psychological and sexual, describing the overlap between them. This is an original study and there is scarce literature on this matter in Brazil. Men and women were investigated and some issues on gender violence were discussed. METHODS: The study is part of the multicenter survey "International Study of Violence in Dating - IDVS" conducted in 2002 - 2003, using its standardized instrument. A total of 362 students, from two universities in the state of São Paulo, one public and one private, answered the self-reported questionnaire, being 37% male and 63% female, mean age of 20 years old. Suffered and perpetrated intimate partner violence during life was examined. RESULTS: Among all interviewees, 75.9% suffered and 76.4% perpetrated some kind of violence throughout life. Psychological violence was the most prevalent type, followed by sexual violence, both suffered and perpetrated. The great superposition between suffered and perpetrated violence (83.9%) reflects the reciprocity of aggression, with no observed difference between men and women. The results of this study are consistent with previous literature on dating violence, which shows high prevalence of suffered and perpetrated violence, besides reciprocity for both men and women. CONCLUSIONS: Intervention actions at this stage of intimate relationships may potentially impact on subsequent marital partnership situations.

Abstract:
The University of São Paulo is a public University and the largest in Brazil. It is broadly organized into distinct campuses that are installed in different cities of the state of São Paulo, each one with its specific aspects. There are more than 95 thousand undergraduate and graduate regularly enrolled students, standing out as one of the best universities in Brazil and Latin America [2]. The performance of the University of São Paulo at the “UI GreenMetric World University Ranking” has improved considerably in 2017 (28th position) on the general ranking. The sustainability management process for USP is carried out considering the strengths each campus presents, but the USP governance process ensures standards and good practices are applied similarly to all areas under the university responsibility. As for example, the recent approval of the USP Environmental Policy, which process engaged the whole USP community, working together to understand the complex context of all campuses, what resulted at the end in very innovative arrangements for researching, teaching and practice for sustainability. Different of the past rankings, data provided for GreenMetric 2017 Ranking contemplated USP as a whole, because it is not possible to assess the university environmental sustainability performance in parts. This approach allowed showing the different enhanced efforts of the University as a whole. In addition, the USP’s environmental policy-making process brought about more integration between the campuses and effective actions were put into practice, helping to consolidate USP as a sustainable university. The highlight in the score was "Setting and Infrastructure": there are 76.4km2 of total area and only 2.6% from them are built-up. The University has been prioritizing the protection of green areas and biodiversity, in São Paulo city campus, totally surrounded by urban environment, but also in the other campuses in the countryside, some of them located in rural environment. This shows that USP’s campuses are environmentally responsible, providing students and staff with enjoyable, healthy and in close touch with nature places. On the topic “Transportation”, the University of São Paulo stands out also. Incentives to improve choice for public transportation and biking within the university community are among the constant concern of the University of São Paulo, which will be keeping up efforts for that.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper parallels the changes experienced by universities and science at the beginning of the new century in order to explore one relevant source of resilience and change inside the universities’ institutional fabric, which is its persistent dependence on the signs and norms produced by science as a nested institution. In no small degree, science is organized according to its norms and values. Notwithstanding, it de facto exists inside the institutional environment created by the university. As such, one could argue that it is a nested institution. Our argument holds that the interplay between the institutional norms coming from the university and science gives rise to one of the more relevant sources of resilience of universities. The paper explores the soundness of these assumptions on primary data collected in a research focusing on the responses of lower-level academic unit leaders in two universities: the University of Tampere, Finland, and the University of São Paulo, Brazil. In each case, we explore the local responses to the changes engendered by autonomy as a proxy of the substantial change in the university's environment, to map how the small academic units respond to a quickly changing external environment.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to assess how technology transfer offices (TTOs) of a public university of the state of São Paulo use patent valuation methods in the process of using developed technology value and transferring technology to industry. Design/methodology/approach This study is an exploratory qualitative investigation based on a case study conducted in a public university in the state of São Paulo. The university has a TTO and an internal structure for technology transfer. In-depth interviews were conducted with the TTO manager about patent valuation and the answers given were analysed. Findings The results on how TTOs use patent valuation methods in the process of assigning value to technology indicate which factors facilitate and which factors hinder the valuation of patents in technologies developed at universities. Research limitations/implications The possible lack of data disclosure due to confidentiality regarding royalties and trading fees makes further comparisons between Brazilian public universities difficult. Therefore, this study recommends that further studies on patent valuation and technology transfer process at private universities, research institutes and public and private companies should be performed. Practical implications In the practice, this study contributes to companies and TTOs by increasing their synergies in licensing negotiations, as well as by reducing the gap of information, between the business parties for assignment and transfer of technologies. With regard to theoretical contribution, this study can cite advances in the methods to measure the financial benefits arising from the valuation of technologies embedded in the patents. Originality/value Owing to the lack of research on the methods of valuation used by TTOs of Brazilian universities, the present study can be useful in serving as a theoretical source for future research and in supporting future TTO negotiations in the process of transferring technologies to productive industry.

Abstract:
e4556143The article on screen seeks to map the babblings of resistance developed by Brazilian public universities in pandemic scenarios. It raises the following provocative questions: what neo-liberal and fascist speeches and attacks have been brought about by Bolsonarism? In view of these speeches, what are the babblings of resistance being developed by public universities? And, what are the contributions of Brazilian public universities in pandemic scenarios? Were carried out a mapping of neoliberal and fascist speeches managed by Bolsonarism, whose effects can be seen in attacks on universities, and a mapping of the teaching, research and extension actions developed by Brazilian public universities during the pandemic. It uses the cartographic method and brings as devices for producing information from official documents, academic and journalistic articles, online events, lives and scientific research developed by universities in Covid-19 scenarios. In this cartography, the babblings of teaching, extension and research emerged. It suggests that Brazilian public universities have been suffering continuous budget cuts and privatist policies, leaving their operating conditions increasingly precarious, in addition to the constant attacks guided by neoliberal and fascist logics, widely practiced by the majority of Bolsonarist interlocutors. It also points out that despite the attacks suffered, there is a permanent work of resistance to the neoliberal and fascist conceptions and practices that find shelter and are spreading under the Bolsonaro government. It reveals the commitment of public universities to policies of social inclusion, production and dissemination of knowledge, in addition to actions to prevent and minimize the social impacts of the pandemic. The Law 11.645/08, ordained and sanctioned by the then president of the republic, Luís Inácio Lula da Silva - that turns obligatory the teaching of History and Indigenous Culture in every net of the basic teaching - it is direct fruit of the claims of the indigenous movement, NGOs (Non-governmental Organizations), indigenists and universities, that long for to see recognized the contributions of the indigenous people in the process of formation of the Brazilian nation. Abstract:
INTRODUCTION: Substance use among college students has been reported worldwide by large statistical surveys. In Brazil, regional studies have been conducted with this purpose, similar to the longitudinal survey that has been performed for 13 years among college students from University of São Paulo USP, Brazil. AIMS: The present study aimed to describe the 2009 results and compare them to previous surveys (1996 and 2001) in order to identify substance use trends that could guide the responsible authorities in the development of adequate control strategies. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional epidemiological study with a multistage stratified cluster sample. The instrument was an anonymous self-administered questionnaire that evaluated lifetime, past-year and past-month substance use. SAMPLE: 10.913 students from graduation courses at the different USP campi: University City, Complex Health Center and School of Law. RESULTS: The students from USP have been consuming fewer drugs (1996 and 2009), with a special decreased use of inhalants and increased use of amphetamines in all periods evaluated. Human Science students consume drugs more frequently. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this survey are consistent with the trends observed in North America. Alcohol and esctasy use definitely deserve more attention within this population and further studies in this area are indeed necessary

Made available in DSpace on 2018-06-18T13:27:08Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2017
The expansion of the Federal Institutions of Higher Education (Instituições Federais de Ensino Superior – IFES) in Brazil was an important process for higher education in the country, especially in the last two decades, and counted on the Program for the Expansion of Brazilian Universities (Programa de Expansão das Universidades Brasileiras) and the Program for Support to Restructuring Plans and Expansion of Federal Universities (Programa de Apoio a Planos de Reestruturação e Expansão das Universidades Federais – REUNI). The Federal University of São Paulo (Universidade Federal de São Paulo – UNIFESP) has followed this national process, with specificities and great transformation. This research aimed to analyze the process of graduation expansion in the institution, between 2003 and 2012. Its description was made from its adhesion to the national process until the end of the REUNI program, as well as its analysis in relation to the national expansion of the IFES in the period. It was decided to carry out a case study, with a descriptive-analytical methodology and documentary analysis. The collected data were analyzed through the technique of content analysis and thematic modality. The analysis, properly speaking, came about through in-depth reading of the documents and identification of 132 Contextual Units (UC). 341 Registration Units (UR) were identified of the UC, from which emerged categories and subcategories. The documents included in this research were official publications (12 documents), legislations (4), institution’s management publications and Meeting Minutes of the University Council of UNIFESP, between 2003 and 2012 (141). The documents showed that the general panorama of higher education, in the first phase of the expansion (2003 to 2007) was a crisis in Brazil's higher education and pointed to the recognition of the strategic role of public higher education and the need for a reform of higher education. In the period between 2008 and 2012, the documents reinforced the panorama already outlined, the need to articulate the axes of expansion and the more precise definition of goals. There was an overall growth of IFES in the expansion process as a whole (first phase and REUNI program) of 106% in the number of campuses (from 148 to 305) and 125% in the number of courses (from 2078 to 4,672). The process of graduation expansion at UNIFESP started, effectively, in 2004. From the quantitative data of the analyzed documents, it was observed that the percentage increase of 500% in the number of campuses, 834% in the number of places for admission and 980% in the number of courses. In addition to this quantitative increase, UNIFESP also diversified its area of activity with the inclusion of human, social, applied and exact science courses. The expansion process at the Federal University of São Paulo, between 2003 and 2012, can be considered as unique among the IFES in Brazil, in relation to what happened in the federal public higher education in the country. Its uniqueness is due both to the transformative potential of this expansion and to the growth in the number of campuses, undergraduate courses and enrollments, in relation to national parameters. We observed the transformative character that the expansion brought to UNIFESP, which, from a university in the area of health, became a full university.

Abstract:
The fight against the smoking epidemic is a priority established by the World Health Organization. This study analyzed the prevalence of smoking and its effect on the voice of professors, employees and students at the Bauru campus of University of São Paulo. A self-explaining questionnaire was applied to evaluate the sociodemographic characteristics, general health, voice and behavior in relation to smoking. The study evaluated the prevalence of the habit, degree of smoking dependence (Fagerstrom test) and motivation to interrupt the habit (Richmond test). The results were analyzed on the software Statistica for Windows version 5.1. The chi-square and the Spearmen correlation tests were applied between groups, at a significance level of 5%. The response rate was 62.8%, i.e. 628 participants. Most interviewees were females (74.5%), aged 18 to 29 years (46.2%) and with educational level up to high school (57.8%). Concerning the smoking habit, 10.5% were smokers and 10.5% were ex-smokers. The percentage of smoker students (4.1%) was significantly lower compared to the values observed among employees (p<0.001). The prevalence of smokers was significantly higher among male interviewees (p=0.003), with lower educational level (p<0.001) and in the age range older than 50 years (p<0.001). There was statistically significant correlation between smoking dependence and the educational level (p<0.001). However, the motivation to interrupt the habit did not show correlation with educational level (p=0.344). The smokers exhibited vocal symptoms and throat sensations with significantly higher frequency than non-smokers, including dry cough (p<0.001) with catarrh (p<0.001), hem (p<0.001), throat secretion (p=0.006), dry throat (p=0.010), hoarseness (p=0.001) and harsh voice (p<0.001). The percentage of satisfaction with the own voice was 93% for both groups. Concerning the care with the voice, 54.3% of the sample had received previous information on the subject. These data demonstrate the need of adequate local strategies for prevention and interruption of smoking at the Bauru campus.

This study aimed to profile good mathematics teachers in state schools in São Paulo and identify associations between different profiles of teachers and different management features and specific classroom practices of mathematics teaching with student performance. Therefore, this study presents and analyzes the profile and characteristics related to language, structure, manage the classroom and interact with students of 53 teachers considered effective by Good Teaching Practices in Mathematics Project and who responded to the Teacher Questionnaire developed exclusively for this research, in addition to the socioeconomic characteristics of the students, the average math proficiency in SARESP 2011 the classes of 7th and 9th grade of Elementary School and 3rd grade of High School these teachers and their comparison with the average of the other classes of the school where they teach and also with general averages of the state in the same issue of this review. The study also presents a comparison of some characteristics of teachers of the project with those of their peers in the state system and also the design of statistical models that aimed to determine which factors were significant for student learning in High School of these teachers. Analyzing the data obtained, it was observed in the three series that many teachers had one or two classes with higher average and other classes with not so outstanding results and even below the overall average of SARESP 2011, ie, the fact that a teacher be effective in a series or class does not guarantee it to be so in another. Even so, there were few cases in which the averages of the classes of the teachers in this study were superior achieved by the students of other teachers in the same school. Among the results of this research is emphasized that socioeconomic status had little influence on student performance and those aspects related to the management class are important as to have a strong impact on the performance of these students. The structure of classroom teachers studied did not differ much from the traditional teaching, primarily supported by the use of the voice and the blackboard and the students copying the table most of the time. Still, as much as these teachers have been the protagonists of educational action in most of classes, most of the time in which student participation was the teacher was attentive and interested to what the student said, and also used the ideas students to promote discussions with the whole class. Even in a small selected group of classes, the socioeconomic status of the teacher and class management as the disciplinary climate of the classroom made a difference in student performance. The training, experience, length of work at school or satisfaction with the teaching profession were not significant in explaining student performance in this restricted group, but a relationship of respect between teacher and student and parental support on student learning rather.

Abstract:
We propose a new method for measuring teacher grading standards that is based on the Item Response Theory framework, and investigate the relationship between teacher grading standards and student learning in São Paulo State public schools in light of this new approach. We simulate a policy in which student achievement in a standardized examination (Saresp) is used as the passing grade criterion, setting a unique grading standard for each grade and subject that would substitute the current teacher-defined grading. We estimate the optimal standards that maximize student achievement under this policy, and compare them with the standards estimated for each individual teacher. Our estimates indicate that teachers currently apply standards that are, on average, more lenient than the optimal policy standards

Abstract:
This study about international immigration in São Paulo at the end of 19th century and the begining of 20th century has the purpose to approach the migrants reflow from remigration and from return. It shows the mentioned phenomenon with the international immigration movement perspective, as an important feature from a higher and dynamic movement and not only as a reflex of economic and social conditions from this place. The analysis was made based on the immigrants\'s profile in reflow, from the schedule on departures boarding lists from Santos in 1908 and the official reports from 1890 to 1920. The source allows to identify the destination, the nationality, the family laces, the ages, sex and the religions from these people. These characteristics were interpreted and linked to the economic and demographic conditionants, as well as the definite patterns from immigration history.

Abstract: The parasites occur practically in all trophic levels and their transmission can depend by the presence of a variety of intermediate, parathenic and definitive hosts within the ecosystem. They have important effects over their host populations as, behaviour changing, reproductive success and mortality. By these reasons, some authors consider then important environmental indicators. The objective of this studying was the epidemiology and the intestinals parasites biodiversity in wild mammals from the reservoir of Jaguari, located at the City of Vargem, São Paulo state, and relates with the hosts habits. The specimens were captured by traps, than measured, checked the weight, marked, the faeces were collected and the animals were released. For the intestinals parasites research, the sedimentation and fluctuation methods were used, and autopsies were performed in some cases. In the Jaguari reservoir 23 collects were performed between august 2005 to august 2007. The smalls captured mammals (N= 235) were: Akodon montensis (71.5%), Calomys sp. (6.8%), Oligoryzomys nigripes (14%), Didelphis aurita (3.4%), Gracilinanus sp. (0.4%), Lutreolina crassicaudata (0.4%), Monodelphis sp. (2.1%) and Sylvilagus brasiliensis (1.3%). Also faeces samples were collected (N=44) from the margins of the reservoir as: Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris (56.8%), Lontra longicaudis (38.6%) and Puma concolor (4.5%). From the 303 samples, 205 showed positive for parasites, representing 67.6%. Were found: adults of Cruzia tentaculata (0.5%), larvae of Nematoda (18.5%), Ascarididae eggs (2.9%), Cruzia tentaculata (1.5%), Oxyuridae (0.9%), similars to Dioctophyma sp. (0.5%), Syphacia sp. (0.5%), Toxocaridae sp. (0.5%), Trichostrongylidae (79%), Trichuridae (17%), Hymenolepis diminuta (0.9%), Hymenolepis nana (5.4%), Pseudophyllidea (0.9%), Taeniidae (0.5%), Trematoda (6.3%) and Acanthocephala (3.4%). Cysts of Amoebidae (1.9%), Giardia sp. (0.9%), similars to Balantidium sp. (0.5%), oocysts of Coccidiida (10.2%), Eimeria sp. (0.9%) and trophozoites of Amoebidae (2.4%), also were found. In the Ecological Park, were done 16 collects between November 2006 to February 2008. The small mammals captured (N= 103) were the rodents Myocastor coypus (6.8%), Nectomys squamipes (1.0%), Rattus rattus (20.4%), and the marsupial Didelphis albiventris (71.8%). The total faeces samples collected was 279, and 207 showed positive for parasites, representing 74.2%. Were found adults of Cruzia tentaculata (1.4%), Nematoda larvae (24.1%), Ascarididae eggs (3.4%), Capillaridae (2.9%), Cruzia tentaculata (67.6%), Oxyuridae (3.4%), similars to Dioctophyma sp. Abstract:
The vortex-induced motions (VIM) of offshore platforms stand as an intriguing and challenging engineering problem, drawing attention from industry, universities and research institutes. Field observations, model tests and calculations have extensively showed that the complex fluid-structure interaction can result in appreciable motions and increased fatigue of mooring and risers. It is thus a very relevant issue from the engineering standpoint. A large volume of experimental research has been carried out, mainly to verify designs and characterize the occurrence of VIM. Conversely, the numerical investigations applying CFD tools have shown to be a more flexible approach enabling better understanding of the physics at play due to the possibility of investigating the effects of different parameters upon the vortex induced motions of floating platforms. Moreover, the CFD calculations enable investigation of the full-scale behavior of the platforms under VIM, a very controversial issue presently. Bearing upon these issues, the VIM Joint Industry Project aims at increasing physical insight of this phenomenon by means of investigating the influence of geometric design variations, flow conditions and scale effects with the objective of improving practical knowledge that can be applied in the design stage of floating platforms. In this paper, we present some of the CFD studies, results and observations carried out within the JIP, regarding the VIM of a semi-submersible with circular columns in 0 and 45 degrees and over a wide range of reduced velocities. It is confirmed that the 0 degree incidence results in larger motions than the 45 degrees-incidence case, in contrast to the VIM behavior of a semi-submersible with square columns. The tests campaign carried out at the University of São Paulo for the same platform agree with these results. Within the lock-in range, the frequency synchronization of the lift forces on columns and pontoons cause large net transverse forces. Appreciable sway motions thus result. For larger reduced velocities, synchronization of the flow around the columns cease, but the forces on the pontoons then largely contribute to the total force. In this high-reduced velocity range, the phasing between total force and motion is such that energy transfer from the fluid to the body occurs, causing the amplification of the motions.

Abstract:
Abstract: This article looks into Le Corbusier’s urban proposal for the City of São Paulo, as formulated during his journey to South America in 1929. It highlights the relationship between Architecture and Landscape exposed by Le Corbusier’s plan. This paper sets out to investigate the analysis that the innovative Swiss architect performed of the geography and morphology of São Paulo. It contrasts to the works and plans carried out by technicians and engineers at that time. In order to explain how Le Corbusier’s treatment of nature and landscape differs from them, we study the extent to which Le Corbusier’s plans show design approaches, which were unusual in terms of Western History and Memory. He also looks into the relationship between Le Corbusier’s work, on the one hand, and new technological elements and changes in the visual culture at that time, on the other hand, thus seeking to highlight certain obscure spots within Le Corbusier’s work. This study aims at bringing forward some speculations and methods present in the work of Le Corbusier on cities. It deals with contradictory aspects in Le Corbusier’s work in order to deepen our understanding of contemporary urban problems. Abstract:
São Paulo is the Brazilian state with the largest economic production, the largest population and the largest industrial park of the country, with a participation in GDP of 36.6% (population: 34 million; area: 248,600 km2; urbane population: 92,8%; illiteracy: 10%; infantile mortality: 26.2/1000). Great part of the industry from São Paulo concentrates in the metropolitan area of São Paulo. Nevertheless, in the interior several cities are becoming important in many industrial sectors. After 1930 São Paulo became the vanguard of the Brazilian modernization. Concurrently with the agricultural expansion the state had an extraordinary industrial development. Channeling the great flows of investments of the American and European multinationals and the great internal migratory currents, São Paulo increased its population vastly, it diversified its social structure and it consolidated its economic power. However, the poverty of a great part of its population is a severe social problem. The State of São Paulo, in 1995, consumed 82.9 TWh of electricity, with the consumption of the industrial sector of 39.6 TWh. In that same year Brazil consumed a total of 249.9 TWh, and of this total value, 118.0 TWh was consumed by the industrial sector. By analyzing the evolution tendencies of energy consumption in São Paulo in the last years, it is possible to identify important aspects of the energetic development of this State, particularly in relation to the perspectives of natural gas utilization in gas turbines for power generation.
