Kissinger, Jeffrey Scott. "A Collective Case Study of Mobile E-Book Learning Experiences." UNF Digital Commons, 2011. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/127.

Full text
Abstract:
This research was designed to explore the learning experiences of state college students using mobile e-book readers. The purpose of the study was to build a rich description of how students used electronic textbooks delivered on mobile computing devices for college-level, introductory sociology courses. This research employed a multiple case study design that thoroughly investigated and documented student experiences with this instructional technology. The bounding frame was comprised of the literature on mobile technology, mobile learning theories, and e-books. Situated within the mobile learning framework was a theoretical lens of learning theories commonly found in the literature on mobile learning (constructivism, social cognitive theory, self-efficacy theory, expectancy x value theory, self-determination theory, and situated cognition). This lens was used to provide insight into the student’s learning experiences. This study was comprised of data from a variety of sources that were chosen for their ability to produce insight into the learning experiences of mobile e-book students taking introduction to sociology courses at a Southeastern public state college. The data analysis was comprised of three levels of increasing stages of granular examination. These included level one: descriptive summaries of student cases, level two: student and instructor interview data and excerpts from audio recording transcriptions organized by topical categories, and level three: cross-case synthesis relating to the theoretical framework and research questions. Students were found to be competent with the e-books, confident, metacognitive, and desirous of more social learning opportunities within their e-books. By addressing the primary research question and the subquestions, six major conclusions were reached. These were: (a) students expressed competence in their use of the mobile e-books, (b) students expressed feelings of high self-efficacy when using the mobile e-books, (c) students overall valued the use of the e-book for their learning, (d) students were individualized and metacognitive in their learning with the mobile e-books, (e) students enhanced their learning socially and within situated learning opportunities, and (f) the students and the instructor had divergent views on the value and utility of social, interactive textbooks. Increasing understanding of the use of electronic and mobile instructional technologies such as e-books may better assist educational leaders with preparing students for today’s global knowledge economy. Based on the conclusions of this study, recommendations for future research and educational leadership were addressed.

Atsango, Margaret Aronya. "The use of electronic books in academic libraries : a case study of the University of the Witwatersrand." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/51687.

Full text
Abstract:
Although electronic books are becoming a common place globally, they are not necessarily as widely used as other e-resources due to non-familiarity by many users. Academic libraries are important research centres, supporting the research activities of all disciplines, and seeking to establish and cultivate initiatives which address research output challenges. Traditionally, libraries are the best agencies for collecting, organizing and preserving print information resources for effective use, and for the advancement of knowledge. However, the evolution of electronic information resources and electronic books, has forced librarians in developing countries to rethink collection development policies, and to assess accessibility and convenience. The period since 2005 has seen growth in print and electronic resources, and the development of new clientele relationships, which has changed user information needs as a result of the development of an advanced modern electronic networked environment, that supports the distribution of information content and facilitates its use. The purpose of this research was to conduct a case study research in the University of the Witwatersrand, to explore the use of e-books among undergraduate students in its Faculty of Engineering, to assess levels of e-book use; attitude and perception, check user viewpoints on favourable and unfavourable characteristics of e-books; whether there are any preferences for print versus e-books; the impact of e-books on studies; the purpose they choose to use or not use e-books and to assess any challenges. This study utilised questionnaire and interviews to collect data. The findings indicate that Wits engineering students have preference for print; however, e-books are essential as complementary resources for research. The slow uptake can be attributed to various challenges such as lack of awareness among students; inadequate technology infrastructure; intermittent power outages; different platforms requiring passwords; eye fatigue while reading on the screen; lack of subject specific e-books, and publisher restrictions. The study concludes that it is essential to involve the faculty and lecturers, to increase awareness and usage amongst specific target population.
Mini Dissertation (MIT)--University of Pretoria, 2015.
Information Science
MIT
Unrestricted

Abstract:
This case study sheds light on successful matriculation practices which emerge from the combination of institutional efforts and student needs. In order to discern successful matriculation data was collected in the form of interviews, observations, and documents at a less selective college with a high rate of retention. Mortimer Adler College possesses unique qualities with respect to curriculum, student population, teaching styles, and student life which affect retention in both positive and negative ways. The institution utilizes a highly structured Great Books curriculum and does not utilize traditional grading and assessment methods. The methods of student socialization are also explored through interviews with faculty and administrators. The findings of this study reveal the qualities of Mortimer Adler College which both support and hinder student success. The study also gives insight to the views of students within this unique institutional setting, focusing on their needs and goals and how their perceptions of the institution impact retention. The review of practices at this institution combined with the perception of the student body allows for the examination of programs and practices employed by Mortimer Adler College which aid in improving and supporting high retention that may also be used at other institutions of higher education. Abstract:
Educational Leadership
Ed.D.
Accreditors and administrators have begun to focus on general education with an eye to improvement. One of the most valued, but difficult to assess, learning outcomes in general education is critical thinking. Critical thinking is thought to play a role in student engagement and positive student learning outcomes. This study examined students' acquisition of critical thinking skills in a required general education great books course at a large, mid-Atlantic, Research I university with a high transfer-in population. Student interviews, class observations and document analysis were employed in the study. Specific attention was paid to dialogic learning, as Vygotsky's theory of social learning and the theory of student engagement underpinned the study. This study found that critical thinking learning goals were not communicated to the students explicitly through the syllabus. Only 20 percent of the students in the class reported acquiring critical thinking skills. All of those students were female transfer students. Many students described the class as outside their primary educational interests. Those who acquired critical thinking skills were more likely to be active participants in the class, value professor-student conferences and have a strong academic support network. Social interaction contributed to students' acquisition of critical thinking skills in this class. Future assessment of critical thinking will depend on a clearer definition of the concept. General education programs and courses that link social interaction and the acquisition of critical thinking skills are worthy of further study.
Temple University--Theses

Abstract:
碩士
中華大學
科技管理研究所
94
At present, the primary consideration factors of book budget allocation of university libraries are the number of teachers and students of individual department/institute, and the present budget allocation is usually made based on the weighted identity ratio. However, does this method effectively allocate the budget? Is the allocated budget of individual department/institute effectively utilized? This is an extremely important topic for libraries. This study employs the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) to examine the book budget allocation standards of a university library and to find the most optimal allocation model for book budget allocation of the library. Furthermore, in order to achieve the best utilization of the budget of individual department/institute, this study also performs data mining on the book borrowing data from the database system to discovery the borrowing tendencies of the readers from different departments/institutes, provide valuable budget utilization references for various departments/institutes, and further enhance the effects of budget allocation and utilization.

Consequently, current electronic publications copyright authorization process and business model is no longer enough. The research method of this thesis consisted in two parts- by having in-depth interview with various member-publishers of China College Publisher Association, and by digging into the previous researches. To discover the developing trend and notes of E-book business workflow in B2B market by the following angles- publishers’ vision of Chinese E-book market, needs of e-book authorization and business model, the situation of copyright acquiring process, publishers’ strategic insights of e-book development. Authorization process is the starting point of the whole e-book business, a better copyright protection, which could make authors and publishers more willing to share their works. Ultimately, this made academic publications more affordable and accessible for end users. The role of college publishers is very unique. Because college publishers have non-profit purpose to share their publications, but this role sometimes conflicts with business interests. Hopefully, the e-book business process will be improved by this research

Abstract:
碩士
實踐大學
資訊科技與管理學系碩士班
99
Driven by IT innovation and library materials search methods, services of libraries have been changing and improving. The main purpose of this thesis is to propose an innovative service for university libraries by combining general services of library networks to apply Internet of Things (IoT) to build a book-recommended system. Readers can use devices to find books which fit their preferences through this IoT book-recommended service. To verify the feasibility analysis of this innovative service in university libraries, an IoT book-recommended demo system has been built, in-depth interviews with information commissioners of university libraries are held, and the interview results are made as pre-testing questionnaire to design the external variables which may affect library readers using this innovative service. Questionnaire surveys for the library users are conducted to analyze the user’s willingness to use this IoT book-recommended service. The results show that the operation of the IoT book-recommended demo system is more convenient than the general online stores to provide personalized services. The interview results are summarized as five elements of consideration - the user habits, information security, organizational strategy, system technology, and external environmental factors. The survey results show that users generally approve the operation and application of IoT book-recommended service, especially on its usefulness, and their attitude toward using the service turns positive. The results of this study can be seen as a reference for further research on the follow-up services of the system.

Full text
Abstract:
碩士
國立中興大學
圖書資訊學研究所
103
The library website is one of the main channel to access e-books. Because e-books are invisible and dispersed across platforms, it will rely on libraries to order and present them. The study intends to research how libraries catalogue and provide e-books, how can users find, identify, select and obtain e-books, and then investigate the relationship between e-books access and user tasks. The main objects of the study were two university libraries. The study includes two stages. First, the purpose of the study was to investigate whether students used e-books, and access e-books from which channels frequently.756 questionnaires were received in random samples, and 741 were viable, the recall rate was 96.9%. After the questionnaires were collected, 25 students who have used e-books were assigned 5 tasks and interviewed, in order to explore the difficulties encountered by them. Second, the other purpose of the study was to investigate how librarians catalogue e-books. 2 catalogers finished questionnaires and were interviewed, and the other 6 librarians were interviewed. The study explored that: 1. E-books access channels provided by libraries: (1) Libraries provided varies channels for accessing e-books, but focused on OPAC; (2) Bibliographic records were mostly supplied from vendors, and libraries without more catalogers to enhance records; (3) Libraries provided e-books weblist, where the classification and book list were supplied from vendors; (4) E-books link were tested by system and librarians, and e-book consortium shared the correct link. 2. Students access e-books and perform user tasks: (1) 56% students never used e-books that served by libraries; (2) Students mostly accessed e-books by OPAC and preferred the layer from library homepage as low as possible; (3) Students were familiar with various platforms and were not affected by the interface; (4) The access point used by students were title and keyword, if they didn''t know the default value of access point, they were not satisfy the result; (5) Students used title, author, year and publisher to identify e-books, and wished librarians can enhance bibliographic records and provide covers of e-books; (6) If libraries describe platform name in bibliographic records, it will help users to identify, select and obtain e-books. 3. The relationship between e-books access and user tasks: (1) OPAC can provide user tasks and association; (2) Libraries provide subject classification and popular database can assist students in selecting e-book platforms; (3) The words of systems don''t fit users'' expectation, it will influence how user find, identify and obtain e-books; (4) A number of librarians consider that OPAC is a better system for accessing e-books, but students expect a system which can search e-book platforms simultaneously. In the study, the recommendations for libraries, including that providing complete information in the first result layer; negotiating with publishers about e-book cover copyrights; teaching users how many systems can search e-books, how to access e-books, and providing online training courses; providing brief interpretation and cursor alternate text and words which fit users'' expectation. The recommendations for vendors, including that library automation system vendors can improve search and narrow down functions, and add functions about recommending words and faceted analysis; a vendor who provides bibliographic records can enhance essential records; e-book platform vendors can provide definite subject classification and percent of e-books which are included at platform. The recommendations for users, including that attending training courses about e-books and reflecting the problem about e-books as more as possible.

Abstract:
碩士
正修科技大學
資訊管理研究所
98
In this research, I have designed and developed an e-learning platform that is based on the “Mastery Learning Model”, and to use experiment methods to practice this e-learning platform to understand the relationship between learner’s online study time and the final result. There are three main objectives as follows: 1. To understand the effect between the length of study time and study result. 2. The relationship between the study result and e-learning platform. 3. To understand the level of satisfaction when the user practice this e-learning platform. In this research, the dependent variable is “result of learning”; the independent variable is “study time”; and the first year students of information management department of Cheng-Shiu University is the object of this research. I have divided 68 students into two groups: one group, comprising 35 students, is the experimental group; and the other, the contrast group, comprising 33 students. Freshman English, a textbook for first-year students enrolled into the English subject, is to be the material of this experiment. The result shows that the learner’s performance is correlated with the length of study time. Additionally, the result also showed a satisfactory improvement after use of this e-learning platform to study.

碩士
國立交通大學
資訊學院碩士在職專班數位圖書資訊組
94
This thesis aims to review the problems and difficulties encountered in the library acquisition procedures and their corresponding solutions by the library; as well as to propose a new solution based on the Book Recommendation System developed by National Taitung University Library. In this thesis, the action research method is applied to investigate changes of the library acquisition procedures in National Taitung University Library between the years 2002 and 2005. To solve the problems, the researcher takes the initial action to develop a Book Recommendation System, to collect the feedback data, to review the usability, to modify and to simplify the acquisition procedures. As a result, the researcher changes the traditional methods of library acquisition and empirically demonstrates the impacts of the Book Recommendation System on the following aspects: (1) quality of library collections; (2) manual operation in the library; (3) reduction of lead time; and (4)action research on digital library. This thesis contributes to a realistic problem solving. The complete and thorough descriptions of the process provides a helpful reference to the library management in the future. The researcher summarizes three major conclusions as follows. First, 88% of library users suggest the purchase of library materials by utilizing the union catalog, a bibliographic database of ISBNnet, developed by the National Central Library of Taiwan. This method helps increase the reservation of new arrivals on the New Book Display, from the rate of 1.48% to 5.59%. Evidently, the use of the union catalog of ISBNnet as the bibliographic source of library acquisition improves the quality of library collection. Second, with the launch of the Book Recommendation System, it requires only a single staff to deal with the duplication check of book copies; meanwhile, it reduces dramatically the chances of careless purchase of multiple copies of a single work from the rate of 31.23% to 3.53%. Finally, the acquisition model of Inter-Entity Supply Contract shortens the lead time from some time between 55 and 90 days to 36 days in the library acquisition procedures. The researcher provides suggestions for further development in the following eight respects: (1) promote the union catalog of ISBNnet to libraries with limited human resources so as to improve the administration efficiency; (2) integrate the personalized service functions into the library acquisition system in order to provide customized alert services for new publication information; (3) embrace RSS into the library acquisition system to make it easy for library users to request real-time purchase recommendation; (4) add the mechanism for group learning to the library acquisition system to facilitate the sharing of professional knowledge and interaction; (5) appeal to the Central Trust of China in Taiwan to amend the regulation on order arrival rate in the Inter-Entity Supply Contract; (6) advocate the union catalog to include bibliographic records of publications in languages other than Chinese; (7) encourage the library to launch more practices of e-services to enhance administrative efficacy; (8) improve the quality of other library services by employing the action research method in library practices.

碩士
國立政治大學
圖書資訊與檔案學研究所
107
The library is a place where intellectual freedom must be defended, but because of political factors, religious or public pressure, the censorship is enforced, or the permission to read books is restricted. During the period of martial law(戒嚴時期) in Taiwan, the government restricted or banned books through laws and regulations due to political considerations. Under the context of the Cold War and the period of martial law in Taiwan, the Institute of International Relations (IIR) has a task of think tank(智庫), and its library (IIR Library) collected the materials and the publications of China, and was entrusted to storage the banned books. As time goes on, the mission of IIR has changed, and the value and the meaning of the banned books and the restricted materials have also changed. According to the research motivation, the study aims to discuss (1)the relationship between the banned books during the period of martial law in Taiwan and the IIR Library; (2) the relationship between the change of IIR mission and the meaning and the scope of the banned books and the restricted materials; (3)the formation and development of the banned and restricted collections of IIR Library, including the content and bibliographic statistics; (4)the reading rules and management methods of the banned and restricted collections of IIR Library; (5)the use and the value of the banned and restricted collections of IIR Library. Through the document content analysis method, the study conducts the bibliographic statistics of the banned books and restricted books of IIR Library, and discusses the formation, management situation, academic application and value of the collections by in-depth interviews. The study obtains the following conclusions: (1)most of the banned books of the Martial Law of IIR Library were returned to the original department after the period of martial law ended; (2)the reason why IIR Library restricts reading is similar to the rules of the martial law about banned books; (3)the source of the banned and restricted collections of IIR Library is closely related to the think tank role of IIR; (4)with the transformation of IIR mission, there are some changes in the way that IIR Library collects and manages books; (5)the theme of the banned and restricted collections of IIR Library is based on communism and the Chinese Communist; (6)the number of the banned and restricted collections of IIR Library should be higher than 5,600; (7)the year of publication of the banned and restricted collections of IIR Library are widely distributed from 1912 to 2007; (8)about the year of publication, the number of the banned and restricted collections of IIR Library in the first phase of IIR (1953-1974) and the second phase of IIR(1975-1996) are more than the other phases; (9)about the type of the authors, the most number in the banned and restricted collections of IIR Library is “institutions and publishers”; (10)about location of the publisher, the most number in the banned and restricted collections of IIR Library is “China”; (11)the users state that the banned and restricted collections of IIR Library can meet their research work or academic needs; (12)the banned and restricted collections of IIR Library have the value of research application and historical meaning. According to the results of the research, the following suggestions are proposed: (1)because IIR and IIR Library have their importance, it is recommended that NCCU and NCCU library should help to adjust their direction of future development; (2)the banned and restricted collections of IIR Library should be redefined and included in the special collection; (3)the collections of IIR Library are not easy to save, it should make the preservation environment better; (4)it is recommended that IIR Library should make a choise or adjust the classification number of 007-008; (5)the banned and restricted collections of IIR Library should be digitalized and make them become the institutional repository of NCCU.

Abstract:
碩士
國立交通大學
資訊學院碩士在職專班數位圖書資訊組
94
Nowadays, an individual library is no longer able to satisfy the needs of her patrons due to the significant progress of techniques, the development and utilization of electronic resources, the reduction of financial budget, and the shortage of human resources. In view of this, realizing resource sharing by means of interlibrary cooperation for fulfilling patron needs has become an essential goal of libraries. This thesis investigates how the four libraries of University System of Taiwan (UST), National Chiao-Tung University (NCTU), National Tsing-Hua University (NTHU), National Central University (NCU), and National Yang-Ming University (YM), share their book collections via the Borrow Direct Service. The usage log of this service is analyzed and a survey of patrons' opinions is conducted, for the purpose of understanding the utilization and degree of satisfaction of this service. In addition, an interview with librarians of the four libraries is conducted to comprehend the influence of this service on their work. The conclusions of this thesis is divided into four aspects: the usage log of UST Borrow Direct Service, the utilization of this service, the investigation on the satisfaction of users, and the interview with the librarians. In the aspect of the usage log, four conclusions are drawn. First, NCTU is the primary information provider, and about forty-five percent of lendings are from NCTU; on the other hand, NCU's users are the primary information requester, about forty-two percent of borrowing requests are from NCU's users. Second, the average fill rate of this service is 69.24%, which increases year by year; the main reason for failure is that books to be borrowed are not on shelf or has been borrowed out. Third, the average delivery time is 2.28 days. Finally, the most frequently requested books are about electrical engineering, computer science, and nuclear science, 13.61% in total. In terms of utilization, four conclusions are drawn. First, around 90% of users consider the UST Borrow Direct Service as the first priority to get books they need. Second, over 80% of users will receive notifications to take their requested books within three to seven days after application. Third, 98% of users will check if their university libraries have the books they need before using this Service. Fourth, 99% of users deems that the UST Borrow Direct Service should be continued. Three conclusions can be inferred from the investigation of the satisfaction of users. First, free of charge of the UST Borrow Direct Service is the most satisfactory. Second, about 15% of users are dissatisfied with the following three borrowing rules: (1) only five books could be borrowed, (2) loan duration is 30 days, and (3) a borrowed book is reserved at the borrowing counter of the requester's library for only three working days. The third conclusion is that 85% of users disagree to charge in the future and deem that this service should be free continuously. Librarians of the four libraries have two expectations. The first is to improve the system of the UST Borrow Direct Service by including the progress tracking functionality and integrating the system with the library automation systems and the integrated search system; the second is to combine the system developed by NCU for easy management. According to the above research conclusions, this thesis offers seven suggestions to the UST libraries: (1) continuously promote and popularize the UST Borrow Direct Service; (2) improve the functionionality of the UST Borrow Direct System; (3) follow the Yale University’s Borrow Direct Service to provide readers’ a seamless integration service; (4) unify the related service policies and enhance coordination of the four libraries; (5) conceive the collection development policies of the four libraries to build the foundation of cooperative collection development; (6) include more libraries into this service to gain the maximum benefits of strategic alliance; (7) move toward a patrion-initiated and non-mediated borrow service mode and incorporate the Z39.80 Standard into the UST Borrow Direct System in the future.

Full text
Abstract:
碩士
國立臺灣師範大學
國文學系
105
This paper focuses on the comparative study of Lao-tzu in different excavated documents available, including the bamboo slips of Chu dynasty in Guodian, the silk books of Han dynasty in Mawangdui, and the bamboo slips of Han dynasty collected by Peking University. It tries to find out the linguistic style and thought features of Lao-tzu, reveal some characteristics of its text editing, and then search for the early writing status of its version system. I hope that this study will make a real contribution to the data integration and the philosophical doctrine investigation of Lao-tzu's excavated documents . The linguistic form of Lao-tzu in Han Bamboo Slips is more uniform than the others, and it is more concordant with the specific context, which reveals the fine and strict attitude of editors, better than the other version of Lao-tzu. The use of conjunction words and the function words of auxiliary words has obvious regularity in the writing of Han Bamboo Slips. In particular, the grammatical arrangements within the sentence often show a rigorous narrative structure and coordination of the rhythm, compared to the content of other Lao-tzu versions, and even reached the effect of highlighting or shifting the semantic focus. On the whole, the writing style of the Han Bamboo Slips reflected the influence of time background on the language expression. The differences between the Lao-tzu in Han Bamboo Slips and the other versions are reflected in the detailed content of the narration, the relationship between the writing and the specific value of the evaluation, etc. The basic explanation of Han Bamboo is both concise and rich. The combination of sentence and sequence forms the logic of development cycle, and the specific chapter division also has its rationality in the internal context. Compared with the other excavated books of Lao-tzu, the more pronounced difference of the Han Bamboo Slips is the combing of the concept of relevance and the establishment of the rational approach system. There are also corresponding fragments of Lao-tzu in Han Bamboo Slips with the Guodian and the Mawangdui versions. The similarities between the Han Bamboo Slips and each of Lao-tzu excavated texts, including the linguistic structure, elucidation tendency, conceptual analysis and even the ideological theme, especially the discussion about nomenclature of the ‘naming-name’ issue, all inferred the unique contents of the Han Bamboo may came from an unknown version in the past. It seems that the origin of the version can be presumed to be related to the shape of the Guodian Stage, in a similar ideological and cultural context.

"The responses of Canadian and Chinese teachers and university instructors to picture books : a case study rooted in a content analysis of Canadian and Chinese award-winning picture books (2004-2014)." Thesis, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10388/ETD-2015-11-2315.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore through a social constructivist framework the similarities and differences emerging from a set of Canadian and Chinese award-winning picture books published between 2004 and 2014. In addition to the application of Radical Change characteristics to the picture book set, responses of eight participants in Canadian and Chinese academic and teaching contexts were also explored through semi-structured interviews related to conceptualizations and use of children’s picture books. Child-image and theme were investigated through content analysis. The exploration illuminated that the most frequent child-image was child who encounters difficulties. Child-as-problem solver and playing/imaginative child were more reflected in the Canadian titles, while the Chinese titles included more child-as-narrator and moral/life model. The theme of moral/life lessons was frequently represented by the selected titles, whereas the biggest difference between the two cultural categories was imagination/fantasy, with the Chinese study set involving it far less often. The most obvious Radical Change type was changing forms and formats. The most important purpose of using picture books in both Canadian and Chinese contexts appeared to be books as teaching tools. There has been a considerable amount of imagination/fantasy or children with authentic characterization/special needs in the selected books, yet the participants believed there was a dearth of the particular theme or child-image in current picture books. This study indicates potential for further comparative studies of Canadian and Chinese award-winning picture books, and extends the knowledge of picture books, to address current gaps in the literature, particularly as available research relates to the creation, evaluation and use of picture books.

Abstract:
碩士
國立中興大學
圖書資訊學研究所
92
As Stephen King’s electronic novel, “Riding the Bullet”, shocked the publishers and American libraries started to discuss this alternative media, relatively few researches addressed e-book situations of university libraries in Taiwan. The purpose of this research is to study motives of using, the reasons of not using netLibrary, and different user behaviors among the readers of different disciplines in National Chung Hsing University. The research studied the graduate students of seven disciplines including Science, Engineering, Agriculture, Veterinary, Life Science, Business and Management and Humanities. Methods of the study included related library literature analysis, questionnaires, observations and interviews. The results demonstrated that over 70﹪using e-books were to do researches, and an important reason of not using netLibrary in Chung Hsing University is that “the e-books service is unknown”. The increasing need for English e-books also revealed that English print and electronic books would co-exist today. As for user behaviors of netLibrary were mainly for partially reading, but many functions of netLibrary don’t suit with user behaviors. Most functions proved less convenient to users than functions of print books. Besides, the functions that IT can achieve haven’t come to maturity yet. Comparing motives and the user behaviors among seven disciplines, the graduate students of Veterinary were most willing to use e-books. The graduate students of Life Science needed e-books least. The graduate students of Business and Management expected the functions of e-books in wide diversities. The graduate students of Business and Management and Humanities hoped a longer loan period. On the whole, there were different using motives among seven disciplines, but the user behaviors related to individual reading habits, not related to disciplines. Five suggestions based on the results of this study are as follows: 1.To develop e-book collections in university libraries with consortium continuously. 2.To reinforce on e-books promotion and instruction by libraries. 3.To develop a policy or guidelines on collecting print and electronic books. 4.To select e-books with good functions suit with user behaviors. 5.To develop the e-book collections to match users'' needs and requirements.

Abstract:
Service quality has always been a tacit assumption within the delivery of academic library services, but since the 1990s demands for accountability from different stakeholders, including the clients, made service quality a highly debated and researched focus in academic libraries all over the world. The scope of the study covers a wide-ranging analysis of discourses underpinning service quality and its accompanying performance indicators in academic libraries. Using the academic library of the University of South Africa as an illustrative case study, this study examines the possible impact of inventory control on the service quality of the academic library in three areas, namely access to information resources, retrieval of information resources and positive implications for sound financial management. The study's findings all point to a positive enhancement of service quality in regard to the three areas mentioned.
Information Science
M. Inf.
