Yanul, Travis. "Evaluating Faculty Performance: A Comparison of Behaviorally Anchored Rating Scales Developed for Western Kentucky University Psychology Department Faculty." TopSCHOLAR®, 2008. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1037.

Full text
Abstract:
The current study consisted of a comparison of Behaviorally Anchored Rating Scales (BARS) developed in 2001 and 2008 for the evaluation of the performance of faculty in the Western Kentucky University Psychology Department. BARS generally are less susceptible to various types of rating error than are other rating formats, and are highly relevant to the target job because they utilize behavioral examples of performance. Furthermore, BARS development requires the participation of job incumbents. In both 2001 and 2008, Psychology Department faculty members were involved in every phase of the development process of the BARS instruments addressed in the current study. The new BARS format contains five broad categories of performance with 12 redefined performance dimensions within these categories. The faculty identified a number of new behavioral exemplars for each performance dimension. The new BARS offers several benefits over the previous BARS. Faculty, particularly newer faculty not involved in developing the 2001 format, should be more satisfied with the new instrument; faculty should perceive both the development process and the resulting instrument to be fair; and faculty should consider the instrument to be more valid because of their direct involvement in providing the content. Future research should be conducted to directly assess faculty perceptions of the BARS instrument and development process.

Carley, Stephen. "Valuing additive involvement in university-industry partnerships: do government collaborators engage at scales that optimize their value-added?" Diss., Georgia Institute of Technology, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/50274.

Full text
Abstract:
Collaboration between academic and corporate entities has increased in recent years. On many occasions Government actors (e.g. federal laboratories) will participate in these collaborations, especially when advanced technologies are involved. The following inquiry considers the degree to which the federal entities add (scientific) value to University-Industry partnerships and how this value is spatially mediated. Quantifying degrees of the value that Government actors induce across the spectrum of University-Industry collaborative arrangements is useful for identifying scales at which intervention by federal agents is more effective and/or justified. It is anticipated that the value-added by federal agents in University-Industry collaboration is not spatially uniform but will exhibit greater profitability across specific scales of interaction. Comparing these against actual scales of interaction provides room for discussion on whether Government actors engage Universities and Industry at scales that optimize the value they introduce to these partnerships.

Baker, Robert. "A Comparison of Illusory Halo Levels Between Conventionally-Developed and Factor Analytically-Developed Behaviorally Anchored Rating Scales." TopSCHOLAR®, 1985. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/1886.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to compare halo levels between a set of behaviorally anchored rating scales (BARS) developed by conventional methodology with a set of BARS developed by factor analytic means. The conventionally-developed BARS were developed at the University of California-Berkeley by Department of Psychology faculty members in conjunction with undergraduate psychology students. The factor analytically-derived BARS were developed during the course of the research reported here. In Phase 1 of the present study, undergraduate psychology students rated their instructors on a 1-7 Likert scale using the individual anchors which comprised the conventional BARS. A factor analysis of these ratings was used to form a modified set of BARS. In Phase 2, a new group of undergraduate psychology students was asked to rate their instructors using either the conventional (Harari-Zedeck) BARS or the newly developed modified BARS in order to test for differences in the halo levels for each form of BARS. Halo was measured by the strength of the dimension intercorrelations in each set of scales. It was hypothesized that the factor analytic approach would yield a set of scales with reduced levels of illusory halo. Results indicated, however, that the conventionally-developed and factor analytically-developed BARS were not significantly different in their halo levels. A post hoc reliability check revealed that the conventionally-developed BARS had significantly less interrater reliability than the factor analytically-derived BARS, which may partially account for the lack of difference in the scales’ halo levels.

Sutton, Joyce. "Depression in Caregivers of Alzheimer’s Patients: Concurrent Validity of Two Depression Scales." TopSCHOLAR®, 1987. https://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/2066.

Full text
Abstract:
Forty-five male and female family caregivers of institutionalized and noninstitutionalized Alzheimer’s Disease patients were assessed for depression, using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). Internal consistency and concurrent validity for the BDI and GDS were acceptable, based on item-total correlation, coefficient alphas, and a Pearson’s Product-moment correlation. A stepwise multiple regression analysis was carried out to determine which variables predict depression in Alzheimer’s caregivers. Using the traditional cut-off score of 11 for each scale, it was found that 42% were depressed on the BDI, while 58% were depressed on the GDS; these rates were not significantly different. No difference in depression rate was found between male and female caregivers or between spouse and adult daughter caregivers. However, the depression rate for the caregiver sample was significantly higher than that reported for the general population of older adults. The regression analysis showed that only two variables were predictive of depression in this group of Alzheimer’s caregiver. The less frequently the caregiver spent time away from the patient, the less frequently the caregiver had help in caring for the patient, the more likely the caregiver was to be depressed. It is suggested that social support may be an important factor in the prevention and/or alleviation of depression in family caregivers of patients with Alzheimer’s Disease. Future research is suggested including validation of the BDI and GDS for Alzheimer’s caregivers, using a large representative sample.

Full text
Abstract:
The College Adjustment Scales (CAS) are a multidimensional psychological measure designed specifically for use in college and university settings. The purpose of this study was to assess the ability of the College Adjustment Scales (CAS) to function as outcome measures in university counseling centers. Study 1 assessed the ability of the CAS to track change following brief therapy using a nonequivalent control group design. Study 2 assessed the convergent validity of the CAS by correlating two of the nine CAS scales with two established measures. The results of a three-factor MANOV A revealed that the CAS were able to track change very well for undergraduate students. Results for graduate students showed that three of the CAS scales tracked change quite well, two scales did not track change, and four scales did not track change for graduate males. Convergent validity results were mixed for the two scales assessed. The Self-Esteem scale was determined to be a fairly good measure of global self-esteem. The CAS Anxiety scale did not correlate well with an instrument that is a good measure of anxiety characterized by physiological symptoms. Recommendations for future research are discussed.

Abstract:
This work presents the sociocultural role of university spaces, considering their structure and/or physical facilities or the format of university campi for public use (or public domain) in strategic urban developments, and their interface with the production of contemporary urban space. The city is designated as a public good, an understanding which embraces the definition of what a public entity is. It is seen as the multiplicity of physico-spatial, cultural, social, and political conditions that, in contemporary urban space, are superimposed and intertwined in an attempt to promote its daily use and guarantee bonds of belonging for the formation of citizenship. This work is structured along four axes. Axis 1 approaches the CITY and its interface with the UNIVERSITY, pointing out the need to understand the ideologies that guided the creation of both, as well as its reality in the contemporary world, now with new forms of urban production. Axis 2 focuses on the UNIVERSITY and the formation/structuring of the so-called UNIVERSITY CAMPI and processes of CONTINUITY AND RUPTURES in order to identify historical processes of their urban trajectory. In Axis 3, we analyze UNIVERSITY CAMPI AND PUBLIC SPACES by presenting a series of contemporary issues that involve the UNIVERSITY and its CAMPI and identify DISCUSSIONS and TRENDS through experiences of university spaces that present themselves as avant-garde and new models for the city. Finally, based on some experiences, axis 4 points out reflections on the POTENTIALS AND PERSPECTIVES for the UNIVERSITY (represented by its CAMPI) and the CITY in the process of implementing some of these campi in the context of the Reuni plan in Brazil. Results of this research consider the relations of access and ownership, such as belonging and appropriation, in order to identify the potential of university spaces to promote and activate these public domains, in which the performance of the social and spatial dimensions and the scales of intervention are identified as essential by the influences and impacts generated in public spaces and public domains, including their main tensions and connections with the production of the contemporary city.

Tancreto, Amanda E. "Comparison of Hydrologic Model Performance Statistics Using Thiessen Polygon Rain Gauge and NEXRAD Precipitation Input Methods at Different Watershed Spatial Scales and Rainfall Return Frequencies." UNF Digital Commons, 2015. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/584.

Full text
Abstract:
As hydrological computer modeling software continues to increase in complexity, the need for further understanding of the value of different model input datasets becomes apparent. Frequently used precipitation model input include rain gauge data and next-generation radar–based (NEXRAD) rainfall data. Rain gauge data are usually interpolated across a model domain using various methods including the Thiessen Polygon methodology, which may be data-sparse in some areas and overly data-dense in others. However, rain gauge data are generally very easy to use in hydrologic model development, often requiring little to no data processing. NEXRAD data have the potential to improve hydrologic runoff estimates due to the increased spatial resolution of the data: but has its own issues regarding accuracy, false precipitation indications, and difficulties due to data processing. Previous studies have investigated the value of NEXRAD input versus traditional rain gauge data inputs for hydrologic studies; however, results are inconclusive as to which precipitation source provides more accurate results. Limited work has been done to compare the value of these datasets at multiple spatial scales, especially in Florida, a study area dominated by low topographic drive and sub-tropical weather. In addition, little to no research has been done regarding the value of NEXRAD versus rain gauge data inputs at different rainfall return frequencies. The proposed research will utilize a hydrological rain-runoff model (HEC-HMS) of the Upper St. Johns River Basin, Florida to compare the performance of the two precipitation data input types at various watershed spatial scales and rainfall return frequencies. Statistical analysis of the hydrological model “goodness-of-fit” results will be utilized to assess the watershed scaling and rainfall frequency requirements to xii which NEXRAD data provide little to no advantage over standard rain gauges using the Thiessen Polygon method for estimating rainfall totals across a model domain.

Abstract:
A study was conducted at The University of Texas at Arlington to obtain measurements of non-traditional age undergraduate students using the Mattering Scales for Adult Students in Higher Education (MHE). The MHE is designed to assess the perceptions of adult students on how much they matter to the institution they are attending. The study also sought to determine if "mattering" and other selected nonacademic variables associated with the university environment are perceived by nontraditional age students to effect their likelihood of completing their baccalaureate degree. Of the five subscales surveyed by the MHE, significant statistical differences were found to exist in the Administration, Interaction With Peers, Multiple Roles, and Faculty subscales denoting an interaction between gender and minority status. Significant statistical differences were also found by gender on the Advising subscale and by minority status on the Faculty subscale.

Abstract:
The purpose of this research was to examine relationships between Scale 5 scores on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and adjectives endorsed on the Adjective Check List (ACL) for University Women. The groups being studied were undergraduate and graduate women, psychology and science women; and, women under 28 years old and women over 28 years old.The participants in the research were 93 women enrolled in courses at Ball State University during Spring Quarter, 1986. The sample consisted of 31 undergraduate women (15 psychology women and 16 science women), 32 graduate women (17 psychology women and 15 science women), and 30 women who were matched for area of study and level of education and then divided into two groups (Under 28 and Over 28) of 15 each. The participants were administered the MMPI, the ACL, a Demographic Data Sheet and a Closeness Rating Scale. They were asked to have a significant person in their life endorse the ACL as it applied to the participant and to complete a Closeness Rating Scale.A 2X2 ANOVA was utilized to analyze the impact of level of education and area of study on Scale 5 scores on the MMPI. A One Way Analysis of Variance was used to analyze the relationship of age and Scale 5 scores on the MMPI. Each of the 300 adjectives on the ACL's were compared using Chi Square or Fisher's Exact Test to derive lists of adjectives descriptive of the subgroups. The results of the research indicated that science women had a significantly higher 5 scale score than psychology women (49.52 vs. 44.22; probability less than .05). Lists of adjectives for each group were derived. However, the number of adjectives descriptive of each group was so small that the descriptors may be by chance.

Clayton, Spencer Paul. "Malingering Detection among Accommodation-Seeking University Students." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2010. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/2539.

Full text
Abstract:
Universities have increasingly sought to provide accommodative services to students with learning disorders and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in recent decades thereby creating a need for diagnostic batteries designed to evaluate cognitive abilities relevant to academic performance. Given that accommodative services (extended time on tests, alternate test forms, etc.) provide incentive to distort impairment steps should be taken to estimate the rate at which students distort impairment and to evaluate the accuracy with which symptom distortion is identified. In order to address these concerns, the Word-Memory Test, Test of Memory Malingering, and Fake Bad Scale (of the MMPI-2) were compared in terms of their clinical utility in a university sample within a two-part study. In the first portion of the study, an analogue design (which included a control group (n = 29) and an experimental group (n = 30) that was asked to simulate an academic disability) was used to calculate the sensitivity and specificity of each measure. In the second portion of this study, scores were collected for 121 consecutively presenting students who were evaluated for academic difficulty at a large private university. Failure rates on measures of malingering placed the base rate of malingering within this population between 10 and 25 percent. The Word-Memory Test (WMT) demonstrated the most robust sensitivity and specificity. The modest sensitivity of the Test of Memory Malingering (TOMM) can be partially explained by the ease with which the measure is completed by university students as well as the format of its presentation. Although the scores on Fake Bad Scale (FBS) are modestly correlated with group membership (between controls and simulators), its use should be discouraged in this context due to poor sensitivity and to high rates of false positives.

Klinck, Amanda. "An Experimental Investigation of the Fire Characteristics of the University of Waterloo Burn House Structure." Thesis, University of Waterloo, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10012/774.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis reports on the procedure, results and analysis of four full scale fire tests that were performed at the University of Waterloo's Live Fire Research Facility. The purpose of these tests was to investigate the thermal characteristics of one room of the Burn House structure. Comparisons were made of Burn House experimental data to previous residential fire studies undertaken by researchers from the University of Waterloo. This analysis showed similarities in growth rate characteristics, illustrating that fire behaviour in the Burn House is typical of residential structure fire behaviour. The Burn House experimental data was also compared to predictions from a fire model, CFAST. Recommendations were made for future work in relation to further investigation of the fire characteristics of the Burn House.

Abstract:
Thesis (MA (Psychology))--University of Stellenbosch, 2005.
The current study investigates intercultural differences in suggestibility between Black, Coloured and White students at a South African university using the Creative Imagination Scale (CIS), (Wilson & Barber, 1978). The CIS and a short biographical questionnaire measuring embeddedness in traditional culture were administered to three samples (N=20 each) from students belonging to the above cultural groups. Statistical tests were applied to determine the effects of ethnicity, cultural embeddedness and gender on CIS scores. The results indicate that these three dimensions do not significantly impact on CIS scores. Implications of the results obtained are discussed and ensuing recommendations for future related research are made.

Sigfridsson, Antonia, and Herman Brandt. "Loneliness Among a Sample of Swedish University Students during the COVID-19 Pandemic." Thesis, Umeå universitet, Institutionen för psykologi, 2021. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:umu:diva-183318.

Full text
Abstract:
The outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic has had an enormous impact worldwide and is posing a threat to the physical and mental health of world citizens. The present study examines the extent to which a sample of Swedish university students have experienced loneliness during COVID-19. Furthermore, it also examines if there is a correlation between a high degree of loneliness and increased alcohol consumption. Participants consisted of Swedish university students recruited online using opportunity sampling (N=224). Loneliness was measured using the UCLA Loneliness Scale translated into Swedish. Results showed that the sample displayed higher levels of loneliness compared to normative scores but lower levels when compared to students elsewhere who have been quarantined. A logistic regression found no connection between high degrees of loneliness and increased alcohol consumption in the sample. The results and their implications are discussed. A pre-post measurement design and longitudinal studies are encouraged for future research to evaluate long term consequences of loneliness, along with an increased focus on ways to reduce loneliness. Finally, we suggest that loneliness should continue to be a priority in research in order to fully understand the psychological impact of COVID-19.

Mokkala, Marianne. "Student satisfaction in tourism education : The case of Dalarna University, Borlänge, Sweden." Thesis, Högskolan Dalarna, Turismvetenskap, 2015. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:du-17992.

Full text
Abstract:
The students' expectations must be met to ensure their overall satisfaction. Because of this student satisfaction has become a measurement tool with which the universities can compete against each other in order to attract potential students and also a higher level of internal and external funding. This thesis deals with students' overall satisfaction in tourism education at Dalarna University in Sweden. It is important to understand what it takes for the universities to be able to produce a motivated workforce for the communities and how satisfied students could help in achieving this goal. Sweden was selected because of the recent introduction of tuition fees, in 2010, which has made it even more crucial to understand the factors affecting students' satisfaction. The method chosen for conducting this study was a questionnaire where the students of Dalarna University were asked to rate different aspects of their overall experience on a Likert scale. The research was conducted via Facebook and email questionnaire. The results show different levels of satisfaction based on the tourism programmes and gender for example. The major finding from this research implicate that the social conditions and surrounding city categories are the most influential when it comes to the overall satisfaction of students at Dalarna University. The results give the university and the city of Borlänge an insight on issues that really matter to the students and how to improve them.

Abstract:

Psychotherapy research continues to evolve in order to meet the needs of potential clients and patients, particularly in the area of Empirically-Supported Treatments (EST). . Moreover, recent research has indicated that affording clients with the opportunity to share their perspective of therapy and progress being made leads to more positive outcomes. The goal of this study is to determine (1) if the use of ESTs in a university training clinic yields positive outcomes in therapy, (2) if specific ESTs provide more positive results than other ESTs when used by students in training, and (3) investigate the effectiveness of using the Session Rating Scale (SRS) as a form of immediacy and tracking with clients to improve therapeutic outcome in the same setting as measured by pre and post test scores on the Symptom Checklist 90-Revised (SCL-90-R). The study utilized archival data retrieved from a university training clinic. Participants were deidentified data from past clients who had signed their consent for information to be used in future research studies. Data collected included demographic information, diagnoses, treatment modality (EST) utilized in therapy, pre-therapy scores on the SCL-90-R, post-therapy scores on the SCL-90-R, and scores on the SRS.

Ndima, Nombeko Lungelwa Velile. "The dimensionality of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) with South African University Students." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/61369.

Full text
Abstract:
The Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) has been the subject of widespread debate over the years. Initially conceptualised by Rosenberg as a undimensional measure of global self-esteem, other studies have found evidence that challenges this notion, suggesting that this scale is in fact a multidimensional measure. The aim of this study was to investigate the construct validity of the RSES among South African university students. The RSES was administered to students from two different South African universities located in different regions (N = 304). Principal component analysis (PCA) was used in order to investigate the factor structure of the RSES and correlations were run between the RSES and the General Self-Efficacy Scale (SGSES) to investigate the relationship between self-esteem and self-efficacy. The PCA findings yielded a single factor structure of the RSES in the South African university student sample and a significant positive correlation was observed between self-esteem and self-efficacy. The findings therefore supported the construct validity of the RSES within the South African university context.

Loser, Nichole M. "Malingering Detection Measure Utility and Concordance in a University Accommodation-Seeking Student Population." BYU ScholarsArchive, 2012. https://scholarsarchive.byu.edu/etd/3668.

Full text
Abstract:
According to the Americans with Disabilities Act, universities and colleges are required to provide accommodative services for students with disabilities. Many studies have examined the role of malingering mental health symptoms in order to obtain psychotropic medications, but very little research has been done on the role of accommodations as secondary gain in students who may malinger learning disabilities. This study sought to examine both the usefulness of implementing specific malingering detection measures in psychological evaluations with university students and the agreement of those measures within the population. Archival data was gathered from a university accommodation clinic that provided free psychological evaluations for consecutively presenting students (N=121). Four malingering detection measures were used: the Test of Memory and Malingering (TOMM), the Word Memory Test (WMT), the WAIS Digit Span (DS) and two cut scores for the MMPI-2 F Scale (F Scale 80 and F Scale 95). Scores for these four malingering detection measures were compared in terms of their agreement rates, their classification rates (at a 10% malingering base rate recommendation), and their sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive powers using both the TOMM and WMT independently as diagnostic criterion. A qualitative examination of the data revealed that different combinations of measures did classify some of the same respondents as malingering. Results indicated that each of these four measures share the ability to detect malingering in its different forms and have similar classification rates. Although the TOMM and WMT likely provide overlapping information, the pragmatic implementation of one of these measures may assist in the evaluation of suspected malingering with accommodation-seeking students.
