This work focuses on Western Kentucky University’s Folklife Archives located in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Western Kentucky University has a rich history of folklore scholarship, dating back to at least the early 20th century and the work of Gordon Wilson. Folklore archives across the nation have long been repositories for the fieldwork of folklorists and a place to look to supplement future studies both of folklorists and other disciplines. Western Kentucky’s Folklife Archives are no exception, housing thousands of impressive pieces donated from many generations of folklore scholars. Yet very little has been written about the Western Kentucky Folklife Archives. Through oral history and primary documentation, I have attempted to capture this history from the earliest days of Gordon Wilson, D.K. Wilgus, and Lynwood Montell to the present day. vi

This creative project details the process involved in the creation of the Ball State Jazz Media Archive. This archive will contain oral histories collected from individuals involved with the Ball State jazz program, photographs that are otherwise unavailable for study and other historical materials relevant to jazz at Ball State University. The historical significance and academic uses of such an archive have been described as well as a thorough overview of other major jazz media archives in the United States and other academic projects involving oral history. This project also includes the plans for future collection and population of the archive through the efforts of Sigma Alpha Iota, an international fraternity for women in music.

Abstract:
The Design Workshop Archives and Digital Collection offer a unique opportunity for analysis of the archival process for landscape architecture collections. The goal of this project was to analyze the format of landscape architecture archive collections and design protocol for the creation of the Design Workshop Archives and Digital Collection. A review of best practices and experimentation has guided the appraisal and accessioning of four of Design Workshop’s Legacy Projects. The integration of a digital collection gathered from physical drawings, paper manuscripts, and computer files offers unique opportunities to establish standards and procedures for the creation of an archive at a university campus. The collaboration of professionals, archivists, and landscape architecture staff to create the archives has proven to be useful in many ways. The result is a manual composed of a review of best practices along with an account of the accessioning process undertaken in the creation of this new collection. Scholarly review of the archives evidenced the need for an altered approach to the archiving process in order to support the creation of the digital collection and the quantity of project material. Additional measures were created to appropriately represent and preserve the unique visual components of the works.

Abstract:
Hip hop is a counter cultural movement that emerged in the 1970s in the South Bronx; it has since grown to be a global movement. It is a counter culture that emerges in the post-segregated, post-industrial, and globalized world. Since 2002, archival collections that document hip hop have manifested within academic institutions. Placing hip hop in academic institutions that have historically served as manifestations of hegemony can lead to codification and commodification. This case study examines the University of Houston Hip Hop Collection and explains the establishment of the archive using the cultural competence framework. It concludes that staff at the University of Houston is culturally competent. The case study suggests that building culturally competent archivists can be tool to ensuring representation within an archive of all facets of society.

Abstract:
The objective of this thesis is a study of the management processes in university and college archives in the United Kingdom and Canada. Assumptions raised in the literature, which have not been systematically examined, were investigated. The archivists' responses to five external pressures were determined, namely, the electronic revolution, information management, new legislation, the increase in the volume of records and in the number of users. Three internal issues were also examined, namely, the image of archivists, the relationship between archives and libraries and the education and training of archivists. Research methods were used to conduct the study. Two populations, university and college archives in the United Kingdom and Canada, were defined and stratified random samples were selected. Two instruments were used (a) an interview format containing questions about management processes and (b) a three-part questionnaire: (i) a climate survey of perceptions of the work environment and the amount of change required (ii) the most favoured aspects of work and the most serious problems and (iii) classification information. Copies of written policies and procedures were requested. A pilot project to pre-test the instruments resulted in some modification.Arrangements were made to visit the head archivists of the selected archives and the two instruments were administered. The results were analysed by tabulation, content-analysis and the use of statistical tests. The quantitative and qualitative findings demonstrated the archivists' responses to external and internal pressures. Numerous similarities in the two groups were confirmed and some significant differences were identified. Many of the assumptions raised in the literature were verified; others, however, were not validated. The results of the various sections re-enforced one another. Conclusions and recommendations were presented. The study confirmed that systematic research provided explicit information regarding the management processes of the two populations.

Ao longo de suas vidas funcionais junto à Universidade de São Paulo (USP), pesquisadores e professores atuam nos campos da docência e da investigação científica, acumulando também cargos de gestão. Tais atividades geram um rico manancial documental mantido em seus gabinetes e laboratórios. Todavia, o que ocorre com esta documentação quando deixam de integrar os quadros acadêmicos? A pesquisa busca responder a tal questão. Reconhecendo a relevância e o potencial informativo destes arquivos, repositórios não apenas da memória individual de seus titulares, mas também da própria universidade e, por extensão, da vida científica brasileira, e em face das diversas ações de preservação de arquivos desenvolvidas, sem obedecer a diretrizes comuns ou a um programa regular, pelas faculdades e institutos da USP, nossa intenção é mapear a existência de tais núcleos documentais nos seus diferentes campi e caracterizar as condições em que são preservados e consultados. O resultado a ser alcançado assume duplo caráter: o de um guia, nos moldes preconizados pela literatura arquivística quanto à elaboração de instrumentos de pesquisa, e o de um diagnóstico das circunstâncias de aquisição, custódia e tratamento técnico a que foram submetidos os documentos. O trabalho deverá subsidiar, a curto e médio prazo, a formulação de uma política memorial compatível com a importância da Universidade de São Paulo
Over their functional life at the University of São Paulo (USP), researchers and professors work on the fields of teaching and scientific investigation, also mounting up management positions. These activities generate a rich source of documents usually kept in their offices and laboratories. However, what happens to such documentation when they leave the academic staff? This study aims to answer this question. By recognizing the relevance and the informational potential of such archives repositories of not only the individual memory of their creators, but also of the university itself and, by extension, of Brazilian scientific life , and by facing the various operations of archives preservation developed by USP colleges and institutes without following common guidelines or frameworks, our purpose is to map the existence of such documentation in the different campuses of the University of São Paulo, characterizing their conditions of access and preservation. The result to be achieved is double-­faced: on the one side, we aim to elaborate a guide, adopting the framework of the archival literature on finding aids elaboration; on the other side, we aim to diagnose the circumstances of acquisition, custody and treatment to which the documents were submitted. This study should provide subsidies for the creation, in short and medium term, of a memorial policy compatible with the importance of the University of São Paulo
