Abstract:
This article is a supplement to Barry Cooper's catalogue of 1978 (see below, References). No musical items published before 1801 have entered Aberdeen Public Library since 1979. Of the four Aberdeen University collections mentioned below, Dep is in the library of the Department of Music, while SB and Lib R are in King's College Library. In the course of his original introduction, Barry Cooper mentioned the University's “copyright collection” (p.4), and the inadequacy of its catalogue. Richard Turbet is compiling a checklist of the contents of this collection's 297 volumes, now located within Aberdeen University Library and known as The Stationers’ Hall Collection. As to private collections, Roger Williams has catalogued those in Grampian Region in the care of the National Trust for Scotland, and the catalogues are being prepared for publication. There is early music in the collections at Castle Fraser, Drum Castle, Leith Hall and Brodie Castle. The Montcoffer House private collection, listed in Appendix 3 of the original catalogue, is now housed at Aberdeen University Library MS 2861.

Abstract:
Under the provisions of the 1709 Copyright Act, Scottish universities were entitled to a copy of each printed work entered at Stationers' Hall, London. This entitlement ceased in 1836 when the five Scottish universities agreed to receive an annual payment in lieu of the privilege of deposit. Amongst the many difficulties thrown up by the well-intentioned legislation of 1709, a peculiarly Aberdonian aspect was that the Act specified only ‘the Four Univerisities in Scotland’ provoking arguments as to which of Aberdeen's two universities, King's College or Marischal College, should be the recipient. Although this was- resolved in favour of King's College, it is clear that friction persisted. As late as 1826 the Aberdeen Censor was urging, ‘I wish the members of Marischal College would look to what has become o’ the Stationers' Hall music'. This seems to be the only reference in contemporary literature to the collection.

AbstractIn my recent study on Henricus Brunonis de Piro1 I already announced the publication of further research on three manuscripts of the Aberdeen University Library - nos. 195, 196 and 197 - which contain lectures on civil law by professors of Louvain University in the 1430s. These manuscripts once formed part of the private collection of Bishop William Elphinstone, founder of the University of Aberdeen. He had inherited this part of the collection from his father, also named William, who was a law student at Louvain from 1431 to 1433. My attention was drawn to these documents by Dr. Leslie Macfarlane of the Department of History of the University of Aberdeen when I was lecturing at this university in 1959 on the invitation of Professor Peter Stein. One year earlier, in 1958, Dr. Macfarlane had published a very useful description of the Elphinstone collection2; as to our three manuscripts he had made an effort to find out some details about the Louvain law professors mentioned by Elphinstone but a number of questions remained open. I promised to have a closer look at the texts and to show their importance for our knowledge of civil law studies at Louvain in this period. With the help of my then Ghent colleague Egied Strubbe, who immediately showed a great interest in the subject, a full set of copies of the manuscripts3 was put at my disposal and I started my research. Provisional results were presented in guest lectures at Belgian and British universities as early as 1960-19614 and I returned to the matter on various

The University of St Andrews Library has extensive photographic collections, ranging from a fine collection of very early photography (stemming from St Andrews’ important position in the development of photography in Scotland), to modern documentary and topographical images. In order to increase access to these collections, and to assist in their preservation, the University is in the process of digitising the images, and providing them on-line, with a detailed searchable database index. In recent years, this programme has been undertaken in collaboration with the Universities of Dundee and Aberdeen, in the RSLP-funded Visual evidence project, which aims to provide a single point of access to all three collections. Much has been achieved in recent years using this type of temporary, project-oriented funding, but a period of consolidated, predictable funding is now needed in order to safeguard and further progress the advances made so far.

Abstract:
Abstract The Papyrology Rooms of the Sackler Library, Oxford, preserve the correspondence of the two famous papyrologists, B.P. Grenfell and A.S. Hunt, conducted with numerous scholars from Britain and continental Europe. The main subject of this correspondence is the editing of the texts found in the Oxyrhynchus papyri. On some of the most important legal papyri, namely P.Oxy. 1814, 2089 and especially 2103 (the ‘Oxyrhynchus Gaius’), Hunt sought out the collaboration of Roman law scholars such as F. de Zulueta, W.W. Buckland and E. Levy, who all participated to a varying degree in the editorial process of these legal documents. These letters, some of them hitherto unknown, are here published for the first time. They reveal the extent of the collaboration especially between Hunt and de Zulueta, the Regius Professor of Civil Law in Oxford. In addition to this correspondence, another letter on the same theme was discovered in the University Library of Aberdeen, where de Zulueta’s personal library is now located. It was sent to de Zulueta by the Italian Roman law scholar V. Arangio-Ruiz, who was then editing the PSI 1182 (the ‘Florentine Gaius’), and shows the ongoing dialogue between the two scholars on this important legal papyrus. Taken together, these letters allow a reconstruction of the editorial process applied to some of the most significant witnesses of Roman law sources unearthed in the 20th century. This in turn provokes reflection on the desirability of submitting the standard editions of these sources to a new critical analysis.

Abstract:
There are a number of research projects at present underway at the School of Information and Media in Aberdeen. The School, with an established portfolio of courses in information, library studies and publishing, has recently grown through the incorporation of communications and modern languages teaching staff. The growth of the School from 10 academic staff four years ago to a current position with approximately 50 academic and research staff, is reflected in a corresponding growth in research activity and in the range of research interests represented. New course development, in particular the Postgraduate Diploma/MSc in Information Analysis, has also fuelled the research effort. Following the last Research Assessment Exercise, a policy decision was taken to invest much of the funding achieved in the appointment of Research Assistants who could support the development of research initiatives in the School. The mix of research interests is reflected in the establishment of four research clusters, which seek to draw together staff working in broadly related areas, in order that they may share experience and develop best practice. These clusters focus on information management, information technology/information retrieval, education for information, and publishing and mediation of information. Some of the groups are large, boisterous and possibly hyperactive: others are smaller and more recently established. It might be intere sting to ponder the most effective size and orientation of such groups for maximizing produclivity and enhancing quality, but that is an issue for another day. This article briefly describes the activities and interests of each of the clusters.

Abstract:
Background and Aims A bound manuscript describing the medical cases seen by a mid-eighteenth century Scottish doctor was discovered in the possession of the first author's family. The identity of the doctor is not revealed in the book. The aims were to identify the doctor and understand the significance of this book in the context of Scottish medical history of that period. Methods The process of investigation involved transcribing the book in order to undertake detailed study of the text, with particular focus on style of writing, location, and the names of patients and doctors mentioned. This information was then used in searches of the Wellcome Library for the History and Understanding of Medicine, London and the Department of Special Libraries and Archives of the University of Aberdeen as well as searches of the internet. Results The author was discovered to be a doctor working in Aberdeenshire in the middle of the eighteenth century. His style of writing suggests an educational purpose, with a particular interest in midwifery, and evidence of teaching midwifery techniques to students. He associated with other prominent local doctors of the time and was aware of the current thinking being put forward by his contemporaries. He had a particular association with Dr John Gregory, with whom he not only worked, but whose extended family he also treated. Conclusions The author of this casebook was identified as Dr David Skene, and this adds to our knowledge of this important figure of the Scottish Enlightenment who had a particular interest in midwifery and campaigned for the proper instruction of midwives

This account of Maxwell as professor of natural philosophy at Marischal College, Aberdeen, fills in many details that have been left out of Maxwell's biographies. It discusses the degree programme that Maxwell taught on, the nature of his colleagues, the type of student he had in his classes and the range of activities involved in his teaching. Evidence is cited that Maxwell was an enthusiastic and effective teacher, contrary to the often repeated but thinly supported view to the contrary. Following a brief summary of Maxwell's research interests while at Aberdeen, the myth that Maxwell was sacked from the University of Aberdeen is exploded and the detail of why he moved on is spelt out.

Abstract:
Maths Support at the University of Aberdeen was established in 2012, and has been offered to all students, whatever their discipline and level. Early on, interest was raised amongst the Postgraduate population, which represents about 20% of the whole student population at the University of Aberdeen. Maths Support for Postgraduate students, however, will necessarily take different shapes to Maths Support for Undergraduates. Their time constraints are different; their timetable is often very full, with little opportunity to fit in potential extra sessions for Maths Support during the semester; they need to clarify their Maths queries early in order to be able to keep up with the pace of study. In addition, a significant proportion of Postgraduate students are mature students, coming back to studying a Master a number of years after completing their first degree, who may also be part-time, having to balance between study, work and family time. This paper will discuss the range of tailored Maths Support services developed at the University of Aberdeen for PGTs on Business, Engineering and Geosciences Masters programmes. Student and staff feedback on the usefulness of the service, gathered anecdotally, will also be presented.
