Abstract:
Frequently, the teacher training programs in Chilean universities are designed from a generic vision of pedagogical competencies (not necessarily specialized for a particular discipline) and in form of face-to-face activities. The new demands of the society and the economy, the constant specializations of the scientific fields, and the incorporation of new technologies for teaching and learning make that the typical contemporary forms for the teacher academic training must be reviewed and analyzed. The main goal of this paper is to present the results of a survey about teaching needs on Engineering Pedagogy in engineering departments of INACAP (a Chilean university of applied sciences). In general, the in-strument and indicators seek to obtain information about: (i) needs/demands related to engineering didactic fundamentals, (ii) requirements for the structuring and assessment of teaching-learning processes in a university context, (iii) requirements for the design and evaluation of face-to-face as well as online teaching-learning activities in engineering, among others. The project was led by the International Center of Engineering Education (CIEI) at the University of Talca (Chile) in cooperation with the academic staff of INACAP at the Talca campus, under the pedagogical support of the Technische Universität Dresden (Germany), Faculty of Education. Based on these research results and on the IGIP Curricula, a teacher training program for the academic staff of the engineering schools in online modality was designed and implemented.

Abstract:

The Vietnamese science and high education system plays a major role in the country’s social and economical development. Due to a mixed influence of international education systems, the contribution of the Vietnamese research to the international scientific landscape is still modest. Over the past decades, the most scientific programmes focused mostly on rather theoretical sciences and less on applied sciences. The results are reflected by a rather low rate of international publications on experimental science. Together with the country’s efforts on the efficient use of natural resources, there is an urgent demand for strengthening the scientific activity on environmental sciences. The new Journal of Vietnamese Environment was created to respond to the increasing interest in environmental research. The journal was founded as part of an academic network initiated by the Dresden University of Technology in the framework of Vietnamese-German cooperation programs on training and education. With multidisciplinary fields of interest and several types of manuscripts, the journal has a predominant academic character, the submission of manuscripts is open to students, graduates, researchers and staff members of research and academic institutions, as well as to any individual willing to disseminate the knowledge about the management of Vietnamese environment.

Abstract:
Best Value PIPS has become popular in the Netherlands and at the Hanze UAS. Hanze UAS started its first BV PIPS project in June 2011 and is currently performing seven projects. The Hanze UAS encountered major difficulties in the clarification period with an IT project. Therefore the main thrust of this paper is to explore the clarification and risk management phase. For this purpose the author uses an IT project as a case study. The conclusion is that it is in the clarification phase that the major paradigm shift takes place. BV practitioners must understand that the clarification phase is critical in the changing of the paradigm. The client and the vendor must continually implement the new BV concepts and lessons learned. This case study is similar to projects in the U.S., where the culture of the organization is the biggest challenge to the BV system.

Objective: To compare the efficacy of Chlorhexidine in the prevention of pin tract infection as compared to Povidone-iodine antiseptic. Study Design: Prospective, single blinded randomized trial. Study Setting and Duration: Liaquat University of Health Science (LUMHS), Jamshoro between July 2018 to November 2020. Methodology: All patients who underwent Ilizarov external fixation as per indications were eligible for the study. Individuals with a previous history of osteomyelitis were excluded from the study. Pin sites were cleansed with normal saline using clean applicators. In the group chlorhexidine, the antiseptic was applied on the pin skin interphases (1% chlorhexidine). Similarly, 10% povidone iodine was applied to patients in group C. The control group was cleansed with normal saline. Pin sites were either dressed daily or weekly. The primary outcome was the rate of pin site infection days. Results: Chlorhexidine group had significantly lesser pin-site infections as compared to the povidone-iodine group with a frequency of 13 (39.39%) and 19 (63.33%), p=0.04, respectively. The mean pin tract infection rate days ± SD were significantly lower in the chlorhexidine group as compared to the povidone-iodine group (1.35 ± 2.26 vs 3.54 ± 4.30, p=0.041). Similarly, the mean duration to onset of pin site infection was also significantly higher in the chlorhexidine group compared to povidone-iodine and control groups. Conclusion: Patients who used Chlorhexidine as the cleansing agent had significantly fewer pin-site infections as compared to the povidone-iodine group. Keywords: Chlorhexidine, Ilizarov fixator, fracture, Povidone-iodine

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Harvard--Massachusetts Institute of Technology Division of Health Sciences and Technology, February 2002.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 99-103).
A mechanotransduction model aims to explain how a cell senses mechanical forces and translates them into molecular events, such as changes in intracellular ion concentrations, gene expression, post-translational protein modification, or cytoskeletal redistribution. Many studies of mechanotransduction explore the responses of cell populations to large and, occasionally, poorly characterized deformation. More recent techniques provide the means for characterizing the physical properties of the cell, with the potential for uniting the molecular responses with the material properties and deformation characteristics of the cell. These recent techniques have an additional advantage - they can be used to probe cells at the single cell level. Single cell studies have the potential to elucidate more precisely the specific mechanisms by which a cell senses and transmits signals, because the information gathered from each cell is not averaged over thousands or millions of cells. Over the past decade, several approaches to studying mechanical properties at the single cell level were developed. Atomic force microscopy, optical and magnetic tweezers, micropipette aspiration and other techniques have been used to explore and develop physical models of the cell. By using these techniques, the basic physical response of a cell to mechanical forces has been analyzed, yet the reported cell moduli in the literature, when taken in aggregate, span up to 6 orders of magnitude. It is not clear whether this wide distribution is due to the disparity in different cell types being examined, the methods being used to stress the cell, or the models used to analyze the responses.
(cont.) No study to date has addressed this variability, nor have many studies used the same physical model to test the variability of cellular mechanical properties across different cell types. To help clarify this broad variability in cellular mechanical properties, and to understand factors that may influence the responses of cells, two magnetic traps were designed to study the mechanical and molecular responses of different cell types. It was found that different cells may in fact have different mechanical properties, but the shear moduli are distributed over only one or two orders of magnitude, and not the five or six reported in the literature. Thus, the remaining variance in results is likely due to differences in modeling or technique. It is likely that differences in technique contribute substantially to the remaining variance, since molecular studies indicate that cellular responses are sensitive to environmental conditions such as temperature and to cellular conditions such as confluency.
by Hayden Huang.
Ph.D.

Abstract:
Abstract This thesis addresses the realisation of the regional development task of higher education in response to new regional and national challenges. This regional study investigates how the third task of regional development can be ‎understood and was addressed at Laurea University of Applied Sciences (UAS). In this qualitative study as research continuum: action research is used in the investigation of an organisational-regional change, the integrated perspective of the design research is in the systemising of design and a multiple case study research is integrated for bringing an understanding of a research scope and in addition it can produce new knowledge for design and action. The unit of analysis was a case study and the analysis was undertaken using empirical, in-depth data collected between May 2001 and September 2012. This study provides new and critical insights into the integration of regional development and regionally focused higher education within emergent value networks. In the centre of the study, there is the collectively developed integrative model at Laurea UAS, specifically, the student-centred integration of regional development, research and development (R&D) and higher education functions. Here, in this operative environment, close proximity with an integrated web of R&D activities and projects produces new knowledge. This investigation into the new “third task” of the regionally focused university focuses on the development of new knowledge from value networks and externalities, within which R&D activities steer the direction of new knowledge. This research uses an integrative model to examine the dynamic workings of an emerging networked innovative collaborative environment, consisting of UAS spin-offs and initiatives for knowledge-based economic development, and strategic alliances ‎between the actors of the regional knowledge flows that are rapidly extending towards more global networking and interaction with international externalities
Tiivistelmä Tämän väitöstutkimuksen tutkimuskysymys on seuraava: Miten aluekehitystehtävää voidaan ymmärtää, suunnitella ja toteuttaa ammattikorkeakoulussa? Abstract:
As part of the programme BA Forest Engineering at Hochschule WeihenstephanTriesdorf, University of Applied Sciences (HSWT), Department of Forestry we introduced a Forest Training Trail (FTT) to complement our curriculum with a strong focus on applied training in the field. The core of the FTT is (i) the trail itself with several sites with different focus and (ii) a questionnaire. Every semester a new trail at a new site within the training forest is set up. Usually, the trail encompasses four to six stations, each station representing a thematic focus of the training in the BA 'Forest Engineering', e.g. vegetation, silviculture, hunting, environmental protection, soil or other aspects. The students form teams of three and walk the FTT with a questionnaire and a map of the trail. After the deadline for handing in the questionnaires a master solution of the FTT is published on the faculty homepage in order to give students an opportunity for a self-feedback. The results of the regular evaluation show a high acceptance by the students. Our conclusion after four years of experience with the FTT is that the design as competition and game including a trophy resulted in a very high acceptance and participation with joy.

Abstract:
Abstract Entrepreneurship education in non-business studies has not been extensively studied. The requirements and special features of engineering education of applied sciences is a fairly unaddressed research topic. Yet, there is a growing need to develop the entrepreneurial behaviour of graduates, as voiced in feedback from stakeholders and other actors in society. The competence requirements of graduates are constantly evolving; they are specified globally as well. The aim and motivation for this study is to develop a new framework for fostering entrepreneurship in engineering education. The developed framework could be used for developing, firstly, entrepreneurial behaviour, and secondly, the entrepreneurial mind-set of the engineering graduates. The main focus of entrepreneurship education research has been on content issues and primarily from the perspective of business studies. Therefore, this study has focused on pondering the methodological challenges of entrepreneurship education in the chosen target field, engineering education. The context for outlining the framework is constructed by first introducing the operational environment of the target organisation. Thereafter, the central concepts of entrepreneurship, entrepreneurship education and technology-based entrepreneurship are processed in a literature review in order to build the theoretical basis. In addition, research methods with ontological and epistemological choices are displayed. Due to the multilevel structure of the research phenomenon, the study approaches the phenomenon through four essays. The first essay opens up the aspects and background in order to understand the role and expectations of stakeholders as regards entrepreneurship education. The second essay concentrates on the pedagogical issues and possibilities of action-based learning methods with respect to entrepreneurship education especially. The third essay combines effectuation and causation perspectives on opportunity recognition and offers a framework for effectuation-based entrepreneurship education. The fourth essay is an empirical study covering effectuation and causation from the point of view of local technology-based companies. The conclusions of the study suggest that the outlined effectual entrepreneurship education, if combined with action-based learning methods like enquiry-based learning for instance, could support the development of entrepreneurial behaviour, and ensuing entrepreneurship, among engineering students. It is also suggested that adoption of the new framework requires renewal of the learning environment, and the involvement of the entire organisation in the change process
Viitekehyksen kontekstia on hahmoteltu esittelemällä ensinnäkin kohdeorganisaation toimintaympäristöä.

Abstract:
The University Course Timetabling Problem (UCTP) can be loosely described as assigning events (e.g lectures) to rooms and timeslots in a way that results in a feasible timetable that is optimal according to some custom criteria. The problem has become increasingly relevant as more programs become available in universities. Due to the complexity of UCTP, the problem is usually solved approximately using heuristics. The KTH-inspired UCTP is a variant of the UCTP that is adapted to KTH Royal Institute of Technology. However, few heuristics have been implemented for this variant of UCTP. Therefore, this study introduces an implementation of The Great Deluge heuristic to the KTH-inspired UCTP, and compares it to a state-of-the-art solver for KTH-inspired UCTP. The Great Deluge implementation was compared against the state-of-the-art KTH-inspired UCTP solver for different time limits. For each time limit, the output timetable quality was recorded over several executions. The comparison was done on two problem instances of varying complexity. The results suggest a behavior that varies over time. For larger time limits, GD produced better timetables than the state-of-the-art and the overall quality of timetables was consistent over several executions. For smaller time limits, GD produced worse timetables than the state-of-the-art and the overall quality of timetables was inconsistent over several executions. A few potential causes for the improved performance during the later stages of execution were found through further analysis of the results. Perhaps the biggest potential cause was utilizing the greedy behavior obtained during the mid to late stages of execution.

Abstract:
In the last three years Peru has gone through changes in the process of strengthening and disseminating open access, especially regarding digital theses and research or governmental data. Enactment of Law 30035, which establishes and regulates the Open Access National Digital Repository of Science, Technology and Innovation; the Regulations of the National Registry of Research Papers Submitted for Academic Degrees and Professional Titles, RENATI; the National Strategy for Open Governmental Data, Peru 2017-2021; and the Peruvian Open Governmental Data Model constitute all a legal framework that fosters open access. Within this context, since 2013 the Peruvian University for Applied Science, UPC, has implemented policies aimed to foster open access to academic and scientific information, as well to support the use of interoperable technological platforms. As a result, in March of 2013, the UPC Academic Repository was published. And, recently, UPC adopted as mandatory the open access publication of bachelor’s and master’s theses. In the last three years, the UPC Academic Repository ranked among the top in the Webometrics Repositories (Peru), and showed a significant improvement at the Latin American and World level: At the national level, it went from being ranked 13th in January 2013 to 3rd in January 2017. Worldwide, it went from being ranked 1,516th in January 2013 to 849th in January 2017. In Latin America, in January 2017 it was ranked 62nd among 217 repositories. All actions implemented have been complemented with the following strategies: the open access publication of the theses-related data; the use of diverse metadata standards —Dublin Core Qualifiers, ETD-MS, DRIVER 2.0 and OpenAIRE—; the use of the OAI-PMH interoperable protocol; the implementation of identifiers of digital content —DOI and Handle— and identifiers for users —ORCID and Google Profile—; and curation of digital content. Future activities will be oriented to increase visibility of the UPC repository contents. To this end, we have proposed the following: to use DOI in bachelor’s and master’s theses; increase the number of bibliographical records for theses and their data; monitor and assess consultations to UPC theses as shown by national repositories ALICIA and RENATI; and, finally, implement an automated system for managing theses integrated into the UPC Academic Repository.

Abstract:
The gamma radiation emitted by a nuclear reactor core might contain information about the reactor state. This information may be used in a monitoring system for severe accidents. The Technische Universität Dresden and the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences are currently carrying out feasibility studies for the development of such a system in a collaborative effort. As one part of such feasibility studies we performed Monte Carlo simulations on a simplified model of a generic pressurized water reactor. For a set of states which represent scenarios of a coolant level decrease and core melt, the gamma radiation distribution outside the reactor pressure vessel has been computed. The results are presented in this paper. They indicate that different coolant levels yield different gamma radiation distributions, and that an accumulation of corium inside the lower head is detectable from the outside.

Abstract:
The investigation of insulation debris generation, transport and sedimentation becomes important with regard to reactor safety research for PWR and BWR, when considering the long-term behavior of emergency core cooling systems during all types of loss of coolant accidents (LOCA). The insulation debris released near the break during a LOCA incident consists of a mixture of disparate particle population that varies with size, shape, consistency and other properties. Some fractions of the released insulation debris can be transported into the reactor sump, where it may perturb/impinge on the emergency core cooling systems. Open questions of generic interest are the sedimentation of the insulation debris in a water pool, its possible re-suspension and transport in the sump water flow and the particle load on strainers and corresponding pressure drop. A joint research project on such questions is being performed in cooperation between the University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Go¨rlitz and the Forschungszentrum Dresden-Rossendorf. The project deals with the experimental investigation of particle transport phenomena in coolant flow and the development of CFD models for its description. While the experiments are performed at the University at Zittau/Go¨rlitz, the theoretical modeling efforts are concentrated at Forschungszentrum Dresden-Rossendorf. In the current paper the basic concepts for CFD modeling are described and feasibility studies including the conceptual design of the experiments are presented.

Abstract:
The paper presents an intercultural serious game ‘Experiment D’, which was developed in a cooperation between the junior professor of Intercultural Competence (Chemnitz University of Technology) and the chair of Social Work Management (FHD Dresden – University of Applied Sciences). The game was successfully tested and assessed in the summer term 2017 and 2018. The main plot consists of a communicative negotiation and strategic handling of a complex situation at university that involves various stakeholders, both within and without it. The game fosters cultural awareness and self-reflection, appreciation of and a creative approach towards diversity, as well as general communicative, social, and team competences. Since it does not require any specialised prior knowledge, ‘Experiment D’ potentially addresses students of all disciplines. The participants of the two test sessions were students of the study fields MERGE Technologies for Resource Efficiency (study component “Soft Skills”, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering) and Intercultural Communication and Competence (compulsory study component Intercultural Learning, Faculty of Humanities) at the Chemnitz University of Technology. Ethnicity, nationality, first language(s), degree of proficiency in English and German, and academic background were all factors that engendered a highly diverse game setting. Aside from the concept of the game, as well as its methodology and didactics, the paper also discusses the results of its assessment.

Abstract:
In line with the cooperative project “Non-invasive Condition Monitoring of Nuclear Reactors for the Detection of Level Change and Deformation of the Core” between the Technical University Dresden and the Institute of Process Technology, Process Automation and Measuring Technology (IPM) of Zittau/Goerlitz University of Applied Sciences, a measuring system for the core state diagnosis during a core melt accident in the reactor pressure vessel of a pressurized water reactor is going to be developed. The operational principle of this system is based on the non-invasive measurement of continuously changing gamma radiations (caused by the shifting of melted materials and fission products) outside of the reactor pressure vessel by means of several gamma radiation sensors. The sensors are arranged over the height of the core and the lower head. By using computer based and real-time capable methods for evaluation of the measured gamma radiations conclusions about the core state can subsequently be drawn. This paper includes a description of a concept as well as several methods for the core state diagnosis during a core melt accident. The main part is the analysis of the methods for the core state diagnosis based on different evaluation criteria.

In 2017 25th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icone25-67245.

Abstract:
The continuing search for a long-term storage for highly-active nuclear waste in Germany requires a prolonged intermediate storage period of spent fuel in dry storage casks at the power plant sites. Currently, it is not sufficiently clear if there might be a loss of integrity of the fuel rods within such long periods, e.g. due to rising pressure from gaseous products of nuclear decay. Regarding a final evaluation, extrapolative modelling of the radiochemical and thermomechanical material behavior is challenging and not suitable for predictions on the condition of storage container inventory after the intermediate storage period. Therefore, it is of public interest to find measurement principles or methods which can provide information about the condition of the storage container inventory. In line with a cooperative project (project partners: Technical University Dresden, Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences) different measurement principles and methods (radiation emission, muon transmission, thermography, acoustical spectrometry) for non-invasive condition monitoring of the storage container inventory in case of prolonged intermediate storage are going to be investigated and evaluated. The results shall help to determine suitable methods for the identification of both changes of the spent fuel and inner container structure over long periods without opening the container and would be a significant contribution for the long-term safety of intermediately stored highly radioactive waste. Furthermore, suitable methods would provide information about the transport and conditioning ability of the waste before transfer to the repository. This paper deals with the content of the subproject of Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences as well as with the approach for project realization. A further main part of this paper is the development of experimental infrastructure to support the investigations.

Abstract:
Plunging jets play an important role in nuclear reactor safety research. In the present paper the case of the strainer clogging issue is considered. Entrained air caused by a plunging jet has an influence of the liquid flow field and on the fibre transport in the sump. In the paper the amount of entrained air is given as an inlet boundary condition according to correlations in the literature and confirmed by own experiments. The influence of entrained air on the fibre deposition pattern at the bottom of a tank and on the mixing procedure for the case of temperature differences between jet and tank water are investigated by CFD calculations and compared to experiments. The presented work is part of a joint research project performed in cooperation between the University of Applied Science Zittau/Go¨rlitz and Forschungszentrum Dresden-Rossendorf. The project deals with the experimental investigation of particle transport phenomena in coolant flow in Zittau and the development of CFD models for its simulation in Rossendorf (Krepper et al. 2008).

In 2016 24th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icone24-60273.

Full text
Abstract:
Generic investigations regarding the influence of corrosion processes of hot-dip galvanized PWR containment installations on strainer clogging as well as on the coolant chemistry and possible resulting in-core effects are carried out within joint research projects of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR), TU Dresden (TUD) and Zittau-Görlitz University of Applied Sciences (HSZG). Lab-scale experiments at HZDR and TUD are focused on elucidation of physico-chemical corrosion and precipitation processes as well as resulting clogging effects. Results of generic experiments in a lab-scale corrosion test facility suggest that there is a multi-stage corrosion process. The first stage comprises dissolution of the zinc layer in the coolant forming zinc ions and in turn affecting the coolant chemistry. During the second stage, the base material (steel) corrodes forming insoluble corrosion particles, which can subsequently lead to accelerated clogging of fiber-laden strainers within a few hours. The main influences on corrosion were identified as impact of the coolant jet onto the corroding surface, water chemistry and zinc surface / coolant volume ratio. Furthermore, retrograde solubility of zinc corrosion products in boric acid containing coolants with increasing temperature was observed. Thus, formation and deposition of solid corrosion products cannot be ruled out if zinc containing coolant is heated up during its recirculation into hot downstream components (e.g. hot-spots in core). Corrosion experiments, which included formation of corrosion products at a heated cladding tube, proved that zinc, dissolved in the coolant at low sump temperatures, turns into solid deposits of zinc borates when contacting heated zircaloy surfaces. Due to alternating heating and cooling of the coolant during sump recirculation operation, a cycle of zinc corrosion and zinc borate precipitation may be initiated, which may eventually influence the thermal hydraulics in downstream components during the post-LOCA stage. The results obtained at lab-scale were confirmed by corresponding experiments in semi-technical test facilities of the project partner HSZG. Based on the experimental results, water chemical measures were tested to reduce corrosion and/or zinc borate precipitation effects.

In 2016 24th International Conference on Nuclear Engineering. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/icone24-60261.

Full text
Abstract:
Investigations about the release, transportation and deposit of fibrous insulation material (FIM), corrosion products as well as resulting compounds and debris mixtures become more important to reactor safety research, when considering long-term behavior of emergency core cooling systems (ECCS) during loss of coolant accidents (LOCA). Debris released by a leakage jet leads to head loss buildups at the sump strainers, the debris filters and the spacers of fuel assemblies. However, these complex processes may influence the decay heat transfer out of the reactor core. A similar but newer scenario implies that the boric acid coolant in pressurized water reactors (PWR) can support corrosion processes at hot-dip galvanized installations, leading to a significant release of ionic zinc into the coolant during the sump recirculation phase. A long-term change of chemical properties of the coolant (e.g. pH, zinc ion concentration) has to be considered in safety analyses. Chemical analyses showed that the solubility of zinc in boric acid coolant is inversely proportional to the coolant temperature. Consequently, zinc ions can be dissolved at lower temperatures in the containment sump. Precipitations of zinc borate (ZBP) are possible at hot spots in the reactor core. The ZBP can be formed as a flocculent disperse phase in the coolant or as solidified layers at hot fuel rod surfaces. Layer spalling could lead to the release of further solid particles into coolant flow inside the reactor core. In several joint research projects between the Zittau/Görlitz University of Applied Sciences (HSZG) and the Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) investigations on the impact of these processes to the head loss buildup and the heat transfer from core were done at laboratory and semi-technical scaled test facilities. Generic experiments showed the formation of ZBP in heating rod configurations. The ZBP may remain in the core structures or can be transported on debris filter cakes in upstream and downstream components of ECCS and influence the head loss. After this, research addressed the systematical clarification of physico-chemical mechanisms and their influence on thermal-hydraulic-dynamic processes occurring as a consequence of flow induced corrosion effects during LOCA. This paper includes a description of the most important involved test facilities, applied measuring techniques, an overview of boundary conditions considered experimentally and selected results.

Full text
Abstract:
The presented work is part of a joint research project performed in cooperation between the Forschungszentrum Dresden and University of Applied Sciences Zittau/Goerlitz. The paper deals with experimental investigations concerning the influence of an impinging jet on sedimented insulation material in the building sump of the reactor containment. One of the main tasks in reactor safety research is the safe heat dissipation from the reactor core and the containment of light-water reactors. In the case of loss of coolant accident (LOCA) the possibility of the entry of insulation material into the containment and the building sump of the containment and into the associated systems to the residual heat exhaust is a serious problem. In the long-term phase of a LOCA the coolant ejected by the pipe leakage falls several meters onto the sump water surface. On this way, the jet is mixed with air. Furthermore, the impinging jet will entrain air bubbles into the building sump of the reactor containment. The entrained air bubbles will rise and have an additional influence on the flow field in the sump and of the sedimented insulation material. Hence, the impinging jet has an influence of the insulation material transport in the sump. To investigate the influence of an impinging jet a special test facility was designed. The test facility “Tank” was build up with acrylic glass. Thereby it is possible to use laser PIV to measure the flow field and high-speed video to analyze the jet-structure in the test facility. With help of this instrumentation the following experiments were performed: • Experiments without air entrainment and different distances between pipe outlet and water surface in the test facility. • Experiments with air entrainment, different distances between pipe outlet and water surface in the test facility and different flow velocities of the impinging jet. • Experiments with a cold impinging jet and hot water in the test facility for a defined distance between pipe outlet and water surface and a defined jet velocity of the jet. The main goal of the experiments is to study the physical phenomena of the impinging jet and provide experimental data for verification of CFD models. The corresponding CFD investigations are reported by Krepper et al. [KRE10].

Abstract:
This publication based on a master thesis explores the challenges of the automotive industry regarding the European chemical regulations REACH and CLP, as well as potential improvements of the current compliance activities and the related incentives and barriers. It answers the research question: "To what extent should the compliance activities of actors in the automotive supply chain be extended in order to meet the requirements of European chemicals regulation; and where would it help to strengthen incentives in enforcement and the legal framework?“. The study’s structure is based on the transdisciplinary delta analysis of the Society for Institutional Analysis at the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. It compares the target state of the legal requirements and the requirements for corresponding compliance with the actual state of the actual compliance measures of the automotive players and attempts to identify their weak points (the delta). The main sources for the analysis are the legal texts and relevant court decisions as well as guideline-based expert interviews with automotive players based on Gläser & Laudel. As objects of the analysis, there are in addition answers to random enquiries according to Article 33 (2) REACH as well as the recommendations and guidelines of the industry associations. The analysis identifies the transmission of material information in the supply chain as a key problem. The global database system used for this purpose, the IMDS, shows gaps in the framework conditions. This results in compliance risk due to the dynamically developing regulation. In addition, the study identifies an incompliance of the investigated automobile manufacturers with regard to Art. 33 REACH. In answering the research question, the study recommends solutions to the automotive players that extend the current compliance activities. In addition, it offers tables and process flow diagrams, which structure the duties and required compliance measures and may serve as basic audit criteria. The analysis is carried out from an external perspective and looks at the entire industry. It therefore cannot cover all the individual peculiarities of each automotive player. As a result, the identified gaps serve only as indications for possible further compliance risks.

Niebler, Rebecca. Abfallwirtschaftliche Geschäftsmodelle für Textilien in der Circular Economy. Sonderforschungsgruppe Institutionenanalyse, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.46850/sofia.9783941627833.

Full text
Abstract:
This master thesis explores the challenges for waste management business models in the field of textiles regarding the requirements of the circular economy, as well as improvement potentials in the current framework conditions. It is concerned with the research question: "Is it advisable to change the frame-work conditions at meso or macro level, with regard to business models for waste management companies in the textile sector that are oriented towards the requirements of the circular economy, and - if so - in what way?” The approach of the study is based on the delta analysis of the e Society for Institutional Analysis at the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences. It compares the target state of the normative requirements with the actual state of the textile and waste management framework conditions and attempts to identify the gaps (the delta). Based on the delta, it develops approaches that are intended to help reduce the gaps. The thesis develops three business models for the target year 2025 in different areas: an exchange platform for sorters, recyclers and designers, an automatic sorting plant and a plant for fibre-to-fibre recycling of mixed materials. It is becoming clear that these business models cannot meet the target requirements for the circular economy. The analysis identifies the remaining gaps in the framework conditions as the main problem. For example, insufficient innovation impulses and the lack of competitiveness of secondary raw materials inhibit the actors from applying and using new technologies and business models. Restricted access to knowledge and information, as well as a lack of transparency between the actors, also prove to be problematic. In order to answer the research question, the study recommends altering the framework conditions at meso and macro level. It proposes a platform for cooperation between designers, the introduction of a material declaration system and an eco-design guideline for textiles as possible development options. In addition, this work offers a matrix of criteria to help the actors test and improve their new waste management business models regarding their suitability for the circular economy. The analysis is carried out from an outsider's perspective on the entire textile industry. It therefore cannot cover and deal with all aspects and individual circumstances of each player in detail. The necessary changes in the framework conditions that have been identified can therefore be used as a basis for further investigations.
