Abstract:

Baloh, Robert W. Schuknecht and His Breakthrough on Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. Oxford University Press, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/med/9780190600129.003.0017.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1949, Harold Schuknecht completed his residency in John Lindsay’s Otolaryngology Department at the University of Chicago and stayed first as a clinical instructor and then as an assistant professor. Schuknecht reviewed the temporal bone specimens from the patient reported by his mentor, John Lindsay, and from patients reported by Charles Hallpike and colleagues and was struck by the similarity in the pathologic changes. He concluded that in each case damage to the labyrinth resulted from occlusion of the anterior vestibular artery. Schuknecht believed that the delayed positional vertigo that occurred in these cases must have originated from the posterior semicircular canal. He reasoned that with degeneration of the superior vestibular labyrinth, otoconia would be released from the otolithic membrane of the utricular macule and that, in certain positions of the head, the otoconia would respond to gravity and thereby activate the cupula of the posterior semicircular canal.

Full text
Abstract:
This chapter describes how the Indian education system began to undergo a systemic transformation from 1990s, how ‘international’ schools made their appearance, how private-unaided institutions (self-financing institutions) began to dominate professional education, how the idea of private universities begins to acquire traction, and how India began to be increasingly exposed to the ongoing globalization of education. It critiques the functioning of the AICTE and NCTE. It outlines the policy initiatives undertaken by Madhavrao Scindia and S.R. Bommai as Ministers, MHRD. It narrates the controversy aroused by the proposal to set up a world class National Science University. It describes the salient features of the Private Universities (Establishment and Regulation) Bill, 1995, introduced in the Rajya Sabha by Scindia, and the efforts made by Bommai to amend the Constitution so as to make elementary education a Fundamental Right.

Turner, Stephen. Knowledge Formations. Edited by Robert Frodeman. Oxford University Press, 2017. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780198733522.013.2.

Full text
Abstract:
Knowledge is socially distributed, and the distribution of knowledge is socially structured, but the distribution and the structures within which it is produced and reproduced—often two separate things—have varied enormously. Disciplines are one knowledge formation of special significance. They can be thought of as very old, or as a very recent phenomenon: In the very old sense, disciplines begin with the creation of rituals of certification and exclusion related to knowledge; in the more recent sense, they are the product of university organization, and especially that part of university organization that joins research and teaching, knowledge production and reproduction, in the modern research university. If we understand the general structural constraints on knowledge formations, we can understand the peculiar strengths of disciplines, as well as the historical alternatives to disciplines and the motives for finding alternatives.

Kuhn, Will, and Ethan Hein. Electronic Music School. Oxford University Press, 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190076634.001.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
This book is a practical blueprint for teachers who want to begin teaching project-based music technology, production, and songwriting to secondary and college-age students. It aims to inspire teachers to expand beyond the usual ensemble offerings and to create a culture of unique creativity at their schools. The approach primarily draws upon the authors’ experiences developing and implementing the music technology program at Lebanon (Ohio) High School, one of the nation’s largest secondary-level programs, and courses at New York University and Montclair State University. While the lesson templates can be used with any hardware and software setup, the popular digital audio workstation Ableton Live is used for specific examples and screenshots.

Full text
Abstract:
This book provides detailed information about successful collaborations between universities and public behavioral health organizations in criminal justice contexts. The authors begin by introducing the relevant purpose and definitions and then describe each of the nine contributed chapters to follow. Each of these chapters describes a particular collaboration between a university and a public behavioral health organization. Each chapter is structured around a description of the collaboration’s purposes, beginning, leadership, who is served, services, operations, effectiveness measurement, financial arrangements, and lessons learned. Collaborative projects were selected because they were long-standing and successful. The descriptions provided by each project are then aggregated into a larger model for success. This is detailed in the final chapter with a distillation of “lessons learned” in building, operating, and sustaining a successful collaboration. These lessons are provided in particular areas: planning, working together, training, consultation, financial considerations, personnel, and research. By considering these nine exemplary projects and the final “lessons learned,” this book has implications for comparable collaborations between universities and public behavioral health organizations in a criminal justice context.
