Abstract:
A study of the students perceived quality at Malmo University Subject, course: Facility Management, Bachelor thesis 15 hp Authors: Marcus Hedenskog, Denniz SjööAdvisor: Peter PalmKeywords: Facility management, in-house, outsourcing, perceived quality ___________________________________________________To understand how space in university premises is used is important to be able to support the education that is taken place. Improvement in the supporting function to the core business is the most efficient method to increase learning and perceived quality in the premises. That is why spaces and cleaning plays a big role in student study results in university. Therefore the cleaning in Malmö University plays a big role in the work of Malmö University Facility Service to create a high quality study environment. Today the cleaning is performed by two contractors, one is an external actor and the other one i part of the Malmö University organization. The purpose of the study is to evaluate the student’s perception of differences in quality of the cleaning operators at Malmö University with the basis of the report Utvärdering av lokalvårdsorganisationen. The evaluation is to be seen as an quality parameter and complement to the existing evaluation of the difference in cost in contracting the two cleaningoperators in the report. The collected information from the study is based on a survey and interview with students in the four university buildings Niagara, Gäddan, Orkanen and Hälsa & Samhälle at Malmö University. The result in this study shows that the cleaning at the Malmö University premises is perceived as both important to the students and to be of an high and even quality today. However the students are mistaking many of the building qualities like age and condition for the technical quality of the performed cleaning that is performed. The small differences thatcan be noted is perceived quality of the cleaning relates to the condition and character of the building rather than the quality in performance of the cleaning operator. The perceived quality of the premises and the effect on study result thereby has a stronger connection between new and airy spaces rather than to higher cost for cleaning operation.

Khatoon, Binish. "The uptake of electronic/mobile technologies in dental education at the University of Birmingham." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2015. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/6306/.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to gain a better understanding of the uptake of new mobile technologies and how they are utilized by staff and students in dental education. A questionnaire was distributed to students at the University of Birmingham, Dental School. Follow up one-to-one interviews were conducted. Tutors were interviewed to understand their attitude and understanding towards the use of electronic/mobile technologies. It is apparent that smartphones are more convenient for students to learn and as a resource to advice patients on their clinic. They are using them on the go in preference to any other device and use the support of mobile tools such as phone apps. Emails are used by students for more formal messages and Instant Messaging and social networking sites are used for shorter messages. Students thought that changes were necessary in the way that they communicate and research their studies. There is an all-embracing use, by both tutors and students of mobile learning tools. Learners wish to embed tools such as Instant Messaging in their learning areas but not without the approval of their respected tutors. Institutions should be aware of such changes and look to adapt their learning practices to mobile technologies.

Abstract:
LITERATURE REVIEW What do we know about working through foster carers? A review of psychologically based consultancy and training approaches in the UK. RESEARCH PAPER ‘Against the Odds’ : Foster carers’ perceptions of family, commitment and belonging in successful placements. The thesis comprises three sections. The first is a Literature Review covering UK published studies over the past twenty years on psychologically based interventions for foster carers. With increased recognition of the crucial role that foster carers play in promoting the psychological well-being and mental health of children in care, there has been a corresponding proliferation of consultation and training programmes aimed at assisting carers with this task. The Review examines the effectiveness of these, with pointers for further research in this area. The second section describes a qualitative study related to unexpected positive outcome in foster care. The specific aim is the exploration of perceptions of ‘family’, ‘commitment’ and ‘belonging’ in foster carers who are providing a placement for a young person who has succeeded with them ‘against the odds’. The study employs Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis to identify common themes in the carers’ accounts and the findings are presented in the Results section of the paper, followed by discussion and personal reflection on the enquiry process. The implications of what these ‘successful’ carers reveal are considered with a view to the training and support of foster carers generally. References for each of the first and second papers are included after each respectively. The third section consists of Appendices, including a Public Domain briefing paper, quality estimations of the research studies reviewed and tabulated summaries of each article. The participant information and consent relating to the Empirical paper are also included in the third Section, as well as the Interview schedule and examples of two stages in data analysis.

Abstract:
[Partial Abstract} A mirror provides a reflection of the beholder. Not quite an exact replica, there is space and time between the original object and its reflection. Different mirrors produce different angles, lighting, tone, and mood. The mirror is a tool of reference and of introspection; of confinement and of freedom. ... Shifting between poetry and prose, my manuscript is two-fold. I am the one holding the mirror, looking into my own face and heart, translating what I feel and see onto the page. Simultaneously, my family's hands clasp the hilt of that mirror, turning it so that I may view their faces and stories in light of my own adaptation. ...

Alewine, Elizabeth. "Landscape of the Past: The 1815 Log House at Western Kentucky University." TopSCHOLAR®, 2008. http://digitalcommons.wku.edu/theses/362.

Full text
Abstract:
The 1815 Log House is located on the campus of Western Kentucky University. Built in the early 1800's by Archibald Felts, the house was occupied by his descendants until 1968. The dogtrot floor plan, V-notched logs, and stone chimneys are some of the historical architectural features that can be viewed. It was donated to the Kentucky Library & Museum at WKU in 1980, and now serves as an on-site exhibit of early frontier life in Kentucky. The new landscape design for the log house includes a kitchen garden with period-appropriate plants and outdoor demonstration areas. The inventories and journals of the Shaker community at South Union, KY provided the basis for the vegetables used in the kitchen garden, including 'Late Flat Dutch' cabbage and 'Long Scarlet' radish. Dye plants, such as bloodroot {Sanguinaria canadensis) and Virginia creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia). are included in the kitchen garden; the front of the house will be used to display examples of field crops, including 'Stowell's Evergreen" corn. An area close to the house has been designed for a native plants display. Construction of these gardens in the spring of 2008 involved the removal of grass around the house in keeping with historical accuracy. Combined with the house's location on campus, this will increase the potential for soil erosion. A fence and plants that are intended to act as vegetative filters are included in the design to help slow water runoff, and the use of raised planting beds and mulch to cover the bare soil will minimize soil loss. The native plant garden is intended to act as an introduction to the larger house exhibit, and provides a selection of plants native to Kentucky. Many plants are not typically seen outside of wild woodland settings, such as strawberry bush (Euonymus americana), bird's foot violet {Violapedala), and rattlesnake plantain {Goodyera pubescens), and should increase visitors' enjoyment of the entire display. A path connects the native garden to the house exhibit.

Ramakadi, Lesiba Phillip. "Outsourcing versus in-house staff : a case of the University of Limpopo's support staff." Thesis, University of Limpopo, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10386/2580.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (MBA.) -- University of Limpopo, 2017<br>The research is focused on outsourcing versus in-house staff in the case of the University of Limpopo. Since the outsourcing path was adopted in 2002, no formal study was instituted by UL to ascertain whether the decision had positive effects on the university’s financial status and former employees’ welfare. One of the impediments that posed a real threat to the UL’s outsourcing agenda was the lack of a guiding document to adequately direct the negotiation process. Lack of feedback and lack of a vibrant communication plan as the main variables that triggered a climate of mistrust between the PCS and stakeholders were identified. This study seeks to determine which option, namely outsourcing versus in-house staff complement will be the most advantageous to UL. The idea taken by the UL in 2002 to outsource what was perceived as non-core operations was an idea that was never easy to implement and ultimately failed to achieve its originally intended purpose. This study opted for the qualitative method because it relied on the views of UL’s former employees who were directly affected by the university’s 2002 outsourcing arrangement. The population of this study consisted of one hundred and fifty (150) people comprising of UL’s in-house employees in the UL. The process of selecting the participants was based on the purposive sampling method. The sample size for this study was 38 of the outsourced operational support staff From the results obtained from the study, a conclusion was drawn that the outsourcing arrangement did not provide any significant benefit to any of the affected parties. The recommendations on measures to improve the effectiveness of UL’s outsourcing arrangement were made and described in detail in chapter five of this study. Recommendations for further studies were also made in chapter five as being inevitable because there is no research that is complete in itself

Abstract:
This thesis reports on the procedure, results and analysis of four full scale fire tests that were performed at the University of Waterloo's Live Fire Research Facility. The purpose of these tests was to investigate the thermal characteristics of one room of the Burn House structure. Comparisons were made of Burn House experimental data to previous residential fire studies undertaken by researchers from the University of Waterloo. This analysis showed similarities in growth rate characteristics, illustrating that fire behaviour in the Burn House is typical of residential structure fire behaviour. The Burn House experimental data was also compared to predictions from a fire model, CFAST. Recommendations were made for future work in relation to further investigation of the fire characteristics of the Burn House.

Abstract:
The Special Collections of the Cadbury Research Library at the University of Birmingham hold seven early Qur’ānic pieces on parchment and papyrus dating from the seventh century. Alphonse Mingana purchased them from the antiquarian dealer von Scherling in 1936. Through investigation of the private correspondence of Mingana and archival documents, this research provides new information about the origin and history of the fragments, whose reception has been influenced by the European cultural context at the beginning of the twentieth century, in contrast with the public image proposed in catalogues, official documents and previous studies. Furthermore, this research is an attempt to initiate an alternative perspective in analysing and editing the physical objects and texts of early Qur’ānic manuscripts by applying digital philology, thus using XML-encoded expressions to transcribe all of the richness of manuscripts in reconstructing the history of their transmission. This perspective interprets the process of the making of the manuscript text and the context in which the manuscript was written, thus editing its mobile and multi-layered text, differently from previous examples of the edition of early Qur’ānic manuscripts.

Mpofu, Bukhosi Dumoluhle. "Consumer perceptions of private label brands: an Eastern Cape university-aged analysis." Thesis, Rhodes University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002783.

Full text
Abstract:
This research investigates the consumer perceptions of private label brands amongst the university aged consumers from selected Eastern Cape universities. The research also aimed to ascertain whether or not generation Y consumers are aware of the existence of private labels, whether price, quality, advertising, packaging, reference groups and demographic variables influenced generation Y purchasing behavior of private label brands. To achieve these objectives, the research made use of the simple random technique to gather the primary data via the use of an online structured questionnaire. The sample population selected where the students in the Eastern Cape Province Universities (Rhodes and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Universities) who reside off-campus. The assumption was that students who reside off-campus are more aware of private labels as they carry out shopping more than those that reside on campus and generally would have more disposable income and the reason that two different universities have been chosen is to provide a broad base of student opinions, covering varying cultural and income backgrounds, thus allowing for unbiased, valuable research. After pre-tests were conducted the questionnaire was made available online to easy the distribution of the questionnaire and allow for a greater response rate. Descriptive and inferential statistics where used to analyze the results of the questionnaire. The results showed that consumers are generally aware of private label brands and have at least seen them being advertised. Furthermore, the results showed that consumers purchase groceries based on price, quality and convenience of location of the grocery stores .The results indicate that Generation Y consumers are indeed a significant part of the consumer population and that they represent a confident, self reliant, optimistic and positive generation and are verbally and visually more sophisticated, creating a whole new language through digital media and that Generation Y consumers are generally aware of the existence of private labels. The results also indicate that Generation Y consumers strongly agreed that they purchase groceries based on price and quality, meaning price and quality are very influential when purchasing groceries and that the packaging of, generally, all private label brands was not attractive hence a conclusion was made that packaging of private labeled products does not influence Generation Y’s purchasing behaviour of private labels.

Abstract:
Recomendamos, portanto, a utilização desta versão para avaliação da mobilidade dos espaços de vida dos idosos brasileiros<br>BACKGROUND Mobility is an important component of functionality, necessary for performance of activities of daily living. The questionnaire The University of Alabama at Birmingham Study of Aging Life-Space Assessment (LSA) evaluates mobility from the spaces that older adults go, the frequency and independence that the person moves through these spaces. The LSA is one among only few instruments that evaluate mobility in the context of participation, and it consists of five simple and quick questions. In addition, the questionnaire may be applied in person or by telephone. There are already validated versions of the LSA for use in other countries and, in the absence of a validated version of the LSA in Brazilian Portuguese, it is necessary to adapt cross-culturally and to analyze the measurement properties of the adapted version, in order to increase the options for mobility evaluation of older adults. The purpose of this study was to adapt cross-culturally the LSA into Brazilian Portuguese, and to analyze its measurement properties. METHODS This cross-cultural adaptation and clinimetric study was conducted in two phases. Phase I - cross-cultural adaptation and analysis of content validity: we performed a cross-cultural adaption of the questionnaire and its instructions for application. The adapted version was pretested with 10 professionals and 30 community-dwelling older adults. Phase II - analysis of measurement properties (reliability, construct validity and interpretability): we included 80 community-dwelling older adults. Initially, the adapted LSA was applied; and we put an accelerometer on the participant\'s waist. After seven days, the accelerometer was removed and the questionnaire was reapplied. Reliability was analyzed by the Cronbach\'s alpha (internal consistency), intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and 95% confidence interval (95%CI) (reproducibility), and standard error of measurement (measurement error). The construct validity was analyzed by Pearson\'s correlation between the scores of LSA and accelerometry data (time in sedentary activities and time in moderate and vigorous activities). Interpretability was analyzed by histograms, minimal detectable change (MDC), and determination of floor and ceiling effects. RESULTS We obtained a Brazilian Portuguese version of the LSA and its instructions for application. This version met the criteria for content validity adopted in this study. Internal consistency (Cronbach\'s alpha) was 0.92 and reproducibility (ICC) was 0.97 (95%CI 0.95 to 0.98). The standard error of measurement was calculated in 4.12 points (3%). The LSA score showed negative correlation with sedentary activities (R = -0.63; p < 0.001), and positive correlation with moderate to vigorous activities (R = 0.49; p < 0.001), the MDC was 0.36 points, and we observed no floor or ceiling effects. CONCLUSION The Brazilian Portuguese version of the LSA reproduces the original version with adequate reliability, validity and interpretability. We therefore recommend the use of this version to evaluate life-space mobility of Brazilian older adults

Abstract:
Master of Science<br>Department of Architecture<br>Donald J. Watts<br>This thesis assesses concepts of architectural education both globally and regionally but ultimately presents a pedagogy aimed at the special needs of Afghan architectural education that will serve the needs of Afghan society. It is the author’s hope that this thesis may aptly establish the first steps for a renewed architectural education at Kabul University, Kabul, Afghanistan. The essence of this thesis presents a carefully reasoned and detailed educational strategy for teaching beginning architectural design. The new curriculum in the Department of Architecture at Kabul University requires new syllabi to achieve higher academic standards. The new design course syllabus should address the existing problems of Afghan society. This thesis begins by understanding the context and the current problems confronting the Kabul University Department of Architecture. It is by understanding these problems that I can begin to identify a solution. Understanding the Kabul Municipality rules and regulations, familiarity with beginning design terminology, a carefully stated and sequenced course description promoting gradual student improvement, understanding interrelationships between the interior spaces, environmental sustainable design, and finally introducing a new generation of conscientious architects to Afghan society are some of the main objectives for designing this course. Identifying the best strategy for teaching this course was a primary research question. Christopher Alexander’s great work, A Pattern Language inspired me to select it as the best methodology for my research. My early research focused upon the creation of a new syllabus for the first semester of architectural design at Kabul University. This new syllabus was launched during the first semester of 2009 in Kabul where I taught the new course alongside a junior Afghan faculty member. Establishing the new course materials for the first semester set the stage for my primary focus of this thesis. That is the creation of the second semester architectural design course using pattern language as my pedagogical framework. This pedagogy is fundamental for establishing architectural studies focused upon meaningful new academic criteria. The ultimate aim of my thesis is to lay the foundation stone for the reincarnation of Afghan architectural identity.

Abstract:
Published Article<br>A growing scholarship links good leadership with in-house mentoring. This article looks at how well-performing school leaders benefitted from the inhouse mentoring they received. The author reports on a qualitative investigation based on in-depth individual interviews with six primary school leaders from Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo and Northwest Provence who were purposefully selected based on their receiving a national award for excellence in leadership. These awards were made by the Department of Basic Education in the category 'Excellence in primary school leadership'. The findings show that in-house mentoring benefitted participants holistically through behavioural, knowledge and skills acquisition. Behavioural acquisition included being humble and empathetic towards constructive work performance. Knowledge and skills acquisition related to sustaining the standard of teaching of core subjects, relying on committee input in a relational leadership approach and ensuring a dedicated teacher corps and positive parent involvement. The findings contribute to the discourse on inhouse mentoring for improved school leadership practice.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the relationships between fictional narratives and material objects through writing and sculptural practice. Its purpose is to explore how fiction assists in an understanding of the world we inhabit and, conversely, how our experiences of the world and its real and physically accessible contents (or objects) prevent fiction from transgressing into nonsense. It is anticipated that the combination of material practice and textual fiction will not be an easy marriage: it may be the objects which ultimately give presence to our voices, voices which historically have often attempted to claim and own of things through utterance. The sculptural component of the project addresses the tactility of objects and examines the space where so many tales are told – the home. In so doing, the project explores issues of isolation and connection through objects and materials which harbour a narrative of ostensible comfort. Objects may simultaneously project conflicting accounts of comfort and unease, connection and isolation, contributing to an articulated consciousness of the home.

Delpino, Rossana. "De lo inconmensurable a lo mensurable : proceso dialéctico desde el imaginario al proyecto del edificio Richards Medical Research Laboratories 1957-1964." Doctoral thesis, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/10803/398914.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation analyses Louis Kahn’s independent work until 1957 period in which he designed the Richards Medical Research Laboratories at the University of Pennsylvania. The Richards Medical Research Laboratories marks the creator’s moment par excellence where he discovers the fundamentals that will become trademark of his work and influence as well the architecture of his time. In order to understand the genesis of the Richards Medical Research Laboratories and find the underlying substrates that originate the project I have traced an imaginary section-cut to the timeline until 1957. The present thesis approach comes from two moments: the immeasurable and measurable, that is, from the world of ideas to the world of tangible objects. And from these two moments this thesis tries to open another space for the unsayable to appear in order to comprehend the significance of the Richards Medical Research laboratories in Kahn's work and in his time. Kahn’s creative process follows a path going from the incommensurable (the idea), to the measurable (the building), and goes back to the incommensurable (transcendence departing from the building). Accordingly this thesis is divided in two fundamental parts the first one titled “From the Incommensurable to the Measurable” and a second part titled “From the Measurable to the Incommensurable”. In the first part “From the Incommensurable to the Measurable” the thesis presents the relationships that builds Khan’s “imaginario” establishing connections between his ideas through Kahn’s own writings, professional relationships, trips, and the city and then relating these elements with the same period’s own and referential projects. In this first part of the thesis ideas are the real protagonists therefore texts takes over images. In the second part of the thesis “From the Measurable to the Incommensurable” the main topic centers on the Richard’s Laboratories and the Biology Laboratories. The focus of the second part will be Kahn’s Richard’s laboratories and earlier projects therefore the materiality of the architectural project becomes protagonist. In the Laboratories Kahn identifies, names, and makes clear the empty space as the organizer of architecture, structure, and installations. Through this empty space as organizer it is possible to individualize the service space with the same bluntness as the architectonic spaces through the use of monumental scale and showing how it works as if it were enormous industrial machinery. Departing from the Richards Medical Research Laboratories building Kahn discovered the fundamentals of his own work because through this building he could synthetize in a project the search of years of work and at the same time the architecture could sediment the legacy of history through his travels, relationship with his own time, and his own experience with the city. On the other hand the building works as a manifesto of Kahn’s architecture because with the Laboratories the architect sets the foundations of his work obliterating the legacy of modern architecture. Kahn will work on a solid architecture instead of a fine and diaphanous architecture offering a juxtaposition of walls and then carving them very carefully. Through this organization Kahn operates a series of almost sculptured wall opening in order to create light effect a light that will be sifted and filtered to convert it into a surreal light. The intention of this thesis is to analyze the different levels of the incommensurable and the measurable in its different approximations of the psyche to the matter and vice-versa in order to make them resonate in the incommensurable level which is the one of transcendence; a transcendence achieved through a building and its impact through time making the building itself the embodiment of Louis Kahn legacy to his time and the history of architecture.<br>El presente trabajo se desarrolla en el periodo inicial de la obra independiente de Louis Kahn hasta el año 1957, cuando realizó el edificio Richards Medical Research Laboratories en la Universidad de Pensilvania.

Abstract:
Previous studies have found that stroke could cause a variety of cognitive deficits, including language, memory, attention, and executive function. The Birmingham University Cognitive Screen (BUCS) is designed specifically for cognitive evaluation of stroke patients with two important features: vertical alignment of stimuli and inclusion of nonverbal tests. The aim of this research is to develop a Chinese version of BUCS (C-BUCS) and evaluate its applicability in Taiwan’s patient population. Furthermore, we validate Chinese BUCS by examining its construct validity and discriminant validity. We recruited 100 volunteers, with 33 stroke patients and 31 normal controls completing all items, to participate in the study. We examined the construct validity of Chinese BUCS using the comparable subtests in Cognitive Ability Screening Instrument (CASI) and also its latent structure using the exploratory factor analysis. In addition, we conducted discriminant analysis and one-way analysis of variance to investigate whether the C-BUCS can classify sub-groups of participants based on two classification schemes (territory, toast). The results showed that the C-BUCS comprised of five factors, including memory, linguistic ability, attentional bias, executive function, and sustained attention. The correlations with comparable CASI subtests with were all significant. In addition, the results of the discriminant analysis showed that C-BUCS was very sensitive and discriminative, reflecting the cognitive abilities of different sub-groups of participants. C-BUCS appears to be an appropriate assessment tool for clinical evaluation, providing clinicians and researchers an objective indicator to test cognitive abilities of stroke patients.

Abstract:
The present study investigated identification, access and usage of periodicals in university libraries in Kenya, with a view of recommending a tool for assisting users to identify information. Using questionnaires completed by 316 university library users and 27 librarians, backed with participant observations, document analysis as well as interviews, it was found that usage of periodicals was low as most users browse through periodicals to identify information, a method that is not effective. In-house indexing was investigated and found to be an effective tool in facilitating access to relevant information. The study recommends establishment of in-house indexing programs and databases in university libraries; formulation of consistent indexing policies to achieve quality indexing; and that indexing should be focused on both content and user requirements by specifying points- of- view, and study methodologies to enhance retrieval of relevant information.<br>Information Science<br>M. Proverbs, Wendy Marjorie. "Designing culture: intersections of Indigenous culture at the First Peoples House, University of Victoria." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/3763.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1997 the University of Victoria began to develop a vision for a First Peoples House with the objective of constructing a welcoming Coast Salish home on the university campus. This vision was realized in 2009 when the First Peoples House opened to the university community and public. Goals stemming from early discussions of a First Peoples House included a house that would support Indigenous culture, community events, and showcase Indigenous art. The First Peoples House represents a case study of how Indigenous artists and their material culture intersect with new Indigenous architecture. This paper is a supporting document to accompany a documentary film showcasing Indigenous artists and key players who participated in the development of the First Peoples House. The purpose of this paper and film is to document developmental stages of the First Peoples House that includes material culture—“art”—embedded within the architecture of the house. Nine interviews include the artistic vision of six artists whose work is represented in the house, and three individuals who were involved in early developmental and current phases of the First Peoples House. The research is placed in a historical context respecting the relationship between Indigenous architecture, residential schools, space and place and material culture. Film adds another dimension to the scope of this paper. Together, the paper and film form a visual and critical analysis highlighting historical shifts along with contemporary understandings of cultural narratives, material culture, Indigenous culture and architecture as integrated within the First Peoples House at the University of Victoria.<br>Graduate
