Abstract:
A team at the University of California, Merced, collaborated to evaluate the value of integrating information literacy into introductory composition courses through a curriculum developed by librarians and writing faculty. Using a mixed-methods approach, the team investigated the impact of the curriculum on students’ learning and achievement at the end of their first semester of college. Students participating in the curriculum demonstrated greater gains than their peers in using suitable sources and presenting arguments and multiple viewpoints with evidence. This learning did not translate to higher student achievement as represented by course grades and grade point average.

Abstract:
The following article outlines the University of California-Merced Library’s unfolding news evaluation campaign,1 shares our strategies, and reflects on our efforts. The impetus for this campaign came when a colleague shared Vanessa Otero’s News Quality Chart, a graphic that places news sources on X and Y axes, representing quality and partisan bias.2 Otero’s work, combined with increasing public concern and conversation about the legitimacy of news, propelled my colleagues and I to start discussing how we might emphasize media literacy, especially news evaluation. We started our discussion just prior to the spring semester, and we launched our campaign a few weeks later. Though this meant limited time for planning, we wanted to capitalize on this opportunity to promote information literacy by initiating and participating in a broader campus conversation about news evaluation.

Abstract:
In 2017, four University of California (UC) campuses took a public stance on accelerating the transition to open access (OA) by endorsing the Open Access 2020 (OA2020) initiative’s Expression of Interest (EOI). OA2020 is an international effort to convert the existing corpus of scholarly journals from subscription-based access to OA. In March 2017, when the first three UC campuses—UC-Berkeley, UC-Davis, and UC-San Francisco—endorsed,1,2 there had been only one U.S. signatory institution (California State University-Northridge, having endorsed in July 2016). Six months later in September 2017, another UC campus, Merced, added its affirmation. As of this writing, these five California universities remain the only OA2020 EOI signatories from the United States.3

Abstract:
A 21st century workforce must be trained to solve not only major national and global challenges but to fit into the current complex work environment. The challenges cannot be solved by a single discipline and require interdisciplinary solutions only possible through the collaboration of physical, biological, and social scientists along with engineers. The 21st century student needs to be educated so they can combine disciplinary depth with the ability to reach out to other disciplines. Such training requires a cost-effective higher education structure that promotes and sustains interdisciplinary research and education (IDRE). The current structure has failed to achieve this. In response to this failure, some private universities like Dartmouth and Olin and public institutions like the University of California Merced (UC Merced) are experimenting with giving up traditional department silos and majors in favor of an interdisciplinary organization. These programs can serve as models for what is to be done in U.S. higher education and may also serve as models for emerging universities in the developing world.

ABSTRACTGas Technology Institute (GTI), together with its partners University of California at Merced (UC Merced) and MicroLink Devices Inc. (MicroLink) are developing a full spectrum solar energy collection system to deliver variable electricity and on-demand heat. The technology uses secondary optics in a solar receiver to achieve high efficiency at high temperature, collects heat in particles for low fire danger, stores heat in particles instead of molten salt for low cost, and uses double junction (2J) photovoltaic (PV) cells with backside infrared (IR) reflectors on the secondary optical element to raise exergy efficiency. The overall goal is to deliver enhancement to established trough technology while exceeding the heliostat power tower molten salt temperature limit. The use of inert particles for heat transfer may make parabolic troughs safer near population centers and may be valuable for industrial facilities.

Abstract:
Ten new marianna root-stocks [Prunus cerasifera Ehrh. × P. munsoniana Wight & Hedr.(?)] derived from open pollination of `Marianna 2616' (M series) were planted in 1987 and evaluated at four commercial orchard locations in California (Tehama, Butte, Sutter, and Merced counties) with `Improved French' prune (P. domestica L.) as the scion. These rootstocks were compared to three standard rootstocks: `Marianna 2624', myrobalan seedling (P. cerasifera Ehrh.) and `Myrobalan 29C'. Leaf potassium (K) and nitrogen (N), tree growth, fruit production and fruit quality were measured. Selection M40 in particular had high leaf N, high leaf K (equal to `Marianna 2624' and better than the myrobalan standards), higher yield efficiency per tree, fruit size, drying characteristics, and few root suckers when compared to the three standard rootstocks. M40 is being considered for patent and release by the Pomology Department at the University of California, Davis. Selection M58 had the highest yield efficiency of any tested rootstock. Several selections had characteristics that would make expanded planting worth considering.

Abstract:
A small collection of ascidians from Indonesian marine lakes in the Raja Ampat Islands, West Papua province, was made by biologists from the university of California, Merced and Coral Reef Research Foundation, Palau during a marine lakes macro-invertebrate diversity survey. It comprises 19 species. Some of them previously described show some modifications of their anatomical characters which may be due to a lower salinity and pH of the lake water or perhaps to evolution in situ. Some specimens (Aplousobranchia) could not be assigned to a species, the samples being too small, the larvae absent, and a possible modification in the number or shape of the calcareous spicules may occur. They are nevertheless described.

Abstract:
The Students Assessing Teaching and Learning (SATAL) Program at the University of California, Merced offers assessment support for faculty and program leads while engaging diverse, cross-program undergraduates in students-as- partners experiences in a work setting. Grounded in the Students as Partners (SaP) principles of respect, responsibility, and reciprocity (Cook-Sather, Bovill, & Felten, 2014), our assessment of the SATAL program reveals benefits for both students and faculty acting as co-creators of teaching and learning. Using the SATAL program as an example, we offer readers a logic model to guide the development of student-faculty-staff partnerships and assess the impact of these programs in a more meaningful and consequential manner. We also provide lessons learned from our evolving SATAL program to support others interested in designing sustainable student assisted assessment partnerships.

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to explore whether faculty perceptions of Wikipedia have changed over a five-year period. Design/methodology/approach – A survey was conducted of four universities in the California State University System – California State University, East Bay; Humboldt State University; Cal Poly San Luis Obispo; and California State University, Fresno. Following the survey, respondents who volunteered their contact information were interviewed about their perceptions and/or their assignments/projects involving Wikipedia. Findings – The study showed that, overall, faculty perceptions of Wikipedia have shifted in Wikipedia’s favor and that some faculty members create interesting and unique assignments that involve Wikipedia or Wikipedia-like work. Research limitations/implications – This study sampled 4 of 23 campuses in the California State University System. Practical implications – The growing acceptance of Wikipedia has implications for course work with students both in terms of assignments in the discipline and also for the need to ensure students understand how to evaluate sources. Social implications – The shift to Wikipedia is symptomatic of the larger shift to non-traditional research tools. Originality/value – The literature discussing faculty perceptions of Wikipedia has not discussed whether faculty perceptions are shifting.

Abstract:
In this paper we propose a multi-branch neural network, called MB-Net, for solving the problem of knowledge adaptation from multiple remote sensing scene datasets acquired with different sensors over diverse locations and manually labeled with different experts. Our aim is to learn invariant feature representations from multiple source domains with labeled images and one target domain with unlabeled images. To this end, we define for MB-Net an objective function that mitigates the multiple domain shifts at both feature representation and decision levels, while retaining the ability to discriminate between different land-cover classes. The complete architecture is trainable end-to-end via the backpropagation algorithm. In the experiments, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method on a new multiple domain dataset created from four heterogonous scene datasets well known to the remote sensing community, namely, the University of California (UC-Merced) dataset, the Aerial Image dataset (AID), the PatternNet dataset, and the Northwestern Polytechnical University (NWPU) dataset. In particular, this method boosts the average accuracy over all transfer scenarios up to 89.05% compared to standard architecture based only on cross-entropy loss, which yields an average accuracy of 78.53%.
