This thesis assesses concepts of architectural education both globally and regionally but ultimately presents a pedagogy aimed at the special needs of Afghan architectural education that will serve the needs of Afghan society. It is the author’s hope that this thesis may aptly establish the first steps for a renewed architectural education at Kabul University, Kabul, Afghanistan. The essence of this thesis presents a carefully reasoned and detailed educational strategy for teaching beginning architectural design. The new curriculum in the Department of Architecture at Kabul University requires new syllabi to achieve higher academic standards. The new design course syllabus should address the existing problems of Afghan society. This thesis begins by understanding the context and the current problems confronting the Kabul University Department of Architecture. It is by understanding these problems that I can begin to identify a solution. Understanding the Kabul Municipality rules and regulations, familiarity with beginning design terminology, a carefully stated and sequenced course description promoting gradual student improvement, understanding interrelationships between the interior spaces, environmental sustainable design, and finally introducing a new generation of conscientious architects to Afghan society are some of the main objectives for designing this course. Identifying the best strategy for teaching this course was a primary research question. Christopher Alexander’s great work, A Pattern Language inspired me to select it as the best methodology for my research. My early research focused upon the creation of a new syllabus for the first semester of architectural design at Kabul University. This new syllabus was launched during the first semester of 2009 in Kabul where I taught the new course alongside a junior Afghan faculty member. Establishing the new course materials for the first semester set the stage for my primary focus of this thesis. That is the creation of the second semester architectural design course using pattern language as my pedagogical framework. This pedagogy is fundamental for establishing architectural studies focused upon meaningful new academic criteria. The ultimate aim of my thesis is to lay the foundation stone for the reincarnation of Afghan architectural identity.

In the changed under the big environment, the lower rate of birth and the aging era is coming. This phenomenon is not only affecting the whole number of the national population, and also the proportion of the age. It brought out the decreasing number of the population that to accept the National Educations. Therefore, the enrollment of the private colleges were relatively getting lesser, and this problem is seriously affecting the whole operation for the private colleges. Based on the number of the students is decreasing, in order to reach the school achievements by using every resources, how to allocate the teachers would be the most importance to reach. First, be able to understand the characteristics of each colleges’ in architecture major, we began with investigating the related documentations, therefore, we were able to analyse each individual document. Then, we started by using the grey relational analysis, which we found out the significant matters for the allocation. At final, the applied on the multiple regression analysis, which let us to build up the final method of the allocation of the teachers. Here are the final showed of this study: 1. Based on the grey relational analysis, the significant matters for the allocation are, the number of the undergraduate students, the graduate students, the credits for graduation, the requirements’ credits, the optionals’ credits, and, the number of the classrooms in the major. The highest matters of the coefficient that showed, which was the number of the undergraduate students. 2. By using the multiple regression analysis, we plus the logarithm with the three variability, which are the number of the undergraduate students, the number of the graduate students, and also the credits for graduate, the result that we were getting is the most efficiency affecting matter for the allocation of teachers. Based on the method for the allocation that we build up in front, the number of the students, is the most affecting matter for the final allocated decision. Although, the others matters have their own importance, however, the number of the students, still the largest relation effecting matter for the allocation of teachers in decision.

With the opening to the establishment of universities and junior colleges in recent years, the number of departments about architecture in Taiwan raises rapidly. Numerous and characterized departments concerned with architecture were established by the schools. However, different schools emphasize on different development in the field of architecture. Therefore, how to estimate a student’s core competency of architecture in an objective way becomes an important research topic. Accompanying with progressing in architecture technology and applying of computers in recent years, knowledge in the field of “architecture” has got rid of the traditional definition of “design and architecture engineering technology” and moves towards more diversified development, which makes it hard to estimate a student’s core competency. It is worth reviewing further if students’ core competency qualifies the demand of the job market. The purpose of our research is to collect the information that architecture experts in the productive and academic circles suppose what person of talent the job market needs to construct core competence which students in the department of architecture in university and institute of technology should have, which can be a basis of architectural course development and professional recognition. The research is done by collecting experts’ opinions which are analyzed by applying Fuzzy Delphi Method to pick out 35 principles from 45 principles to estimate students’ core competency in the department of architecture in university and institute of technology. By research results we can find : 1. Using Fuzzy Delphi Method to solve the problem of time and cost that traditional Delphi Method takes is practicable. 2. The main important items of design competence are “have professional design competence of middle and small architecture size” and “have basic design competence”. 3. Architecture and environment planning knowledge are more important as the two items of ”have the specialty about architecture plans”, “have the specialty about architecture physics”, and “have the specialty about site plans“. 4. Architecture technique knowledge shows that experts think understanding of structural analysis is more important than structural calculation. 5. “have the specialty of laws about building laws” is the most important architecture standard knowledge. 6. Applying computers to deal with architecture expression is more important than working by hand in architecture expression. 7.Applying computer technology to architecture is a very important core competence. Due to lack of the research data on the instructional and learning environment of the Department of Architecture in Taiwan, especially in terms of its functionality and utility, which not only impacts the quality of teaching but also impedes student''s self-learning from their own environment. The main purposes of this study are to understand the efficiency of utilization of the institute''s space and facilities, by means of studying the students daily activities and their responses to institute''s interior design, furthermore, to examine the effectiveness of the planning and design of the Department''s building ; eventually, to collect all these data for planners, designers, researchers, and managers to improve their work in future. The context of this study includes : (1) to understand the allocation, the facilities, the compartments of the building. (2) to investigate the interactions between facilities and students activities. (3) to explore the effectiveness of atrium and high-raise of this building from users. This study used questionnaire as a main research tool. This study tried to analyze and compare how effectively the whole environment has been used, and through observation and interviews, to clarify the problems and to explain the phenomenon we found from the questionnaire. The conclusion shows: 1. High-raise of building offers a better environment, but some teaching curricula are limited to extend to outdoor. It is also less possible to make any extension of the building later on. 2. The design of atrium improves the ventilation and lighting condition, but which is also besieged by the surrounding noises. 3. Most people could appreciate the purpose of classrooms serving as a place for teaching and learning, which justifies the necessity of setting classrooms in department''s building. 4. Most studios are situated in the easily accessible location, and the ventilation and lighting condition are also amicable. The environment however is quite uncanny and insufficient in terms of the space. The fact that all three main activities, teaching, drafting and presentation, share the same space may also pose some negative impact on each other. 5. Neglecting the part of prior programming will not only be overloading the designer''s responsibilities, but also be easy to expose the using problems after the building''s completion. 6. The designers skillfully solved the physical limitation of the building by using atrium. However, some of the arrangement of facilities are not properly designed. The physical environment with regard to the purpose of teaching is well arranged, however, the relationship between different several spaces is not properly taken care of ; neither is the prior planning of all the facilities arrangement. 7. The main issue that affects its functionality is the management. The concept of serving and the method to serve its users is demonstrated by proper management, thus only through prior and effective communication of the managerial policies with planners and designers will the full function of facilities be exerted.

Architecture is a profession comprises several disciplines. The study was to explore the information behaviors and use of information resources among students at the Department of Architecture, Shih-Chien University. Interviews and questionnaires were employed for both qualitative and quantitative approaches in the study. The purposes of this study were to explore the information needs and behaviors among architecture students in their professional training. Policies of user services and adjustments for library management and collection development were suggested. The results of the study indicate that students in architecture-major attended to their information needs in the design courses more than the other courses. The students also put more emphasis on the information embedded with fruitful connotations and design inspiration. In seeking information, students used multiple channels to seek information. They relied on large-chain bookstores for seeking information. Most students were infrequent library users, and frequent internet users. Diverse information behaviors were observed among students in architecture major. From the results of the study, it is suggested that the government departments need to provide electronic document delivery services for students in architecture major. To meet the preview needs of this target group, bookstores may provide services for exhibiting sample books or uploading electronic book files on internet convenient for browsing. The library might provide more flexible policies for the management and use collection expediently to meet these users’ needs. Integration of library and information in curriculum might be also planned with teaching faculty in the Department of Architecture. The department of architecture might set up their own library collection to meet students’ needs for easy access of needed resources. For future research, observations and focus group interviews might be employed for further exploration of students’ information behaviors. Expanding research scope or focusing on other subject areas related to curriculum, academics, and practices in architecture discipline might also be emphasized.

The development of thoughts on modern architecture in Taiwan is more diversified. The evolution of the thoughts is determined by the practicing process of architectural experts. Therefore the training of architectural experts is an issue that is worth noticing. Architectural education in Taiwan, which was established during the Japanese Colonial Period, was changed dramatically after the war. After the Nationalist Government took over Taiwan in 1949, architectural experts from mainland China began the construction of modernized architecture after the war and took their position in the development context of architectural education in Taiwan. In 1970s, as students who studied in the USA came back to Taiwan and devoted in architectural education, they promoted the connection between Taiwan and modern architectural education system. It was an important stage for architectural experts in Taiwan to learn about and discover modern architecture after the war. The Department of Architecture of Chung Yuan University was found in 1960. In addition to meeting the demands of social and economic developments, it reflects the transfer path of architectural education in Taiwan after the war. Hence, in order to understand the relationship between architectural education practice and architectural development in Taiwan after the war, Department of Architecture of Chung Yuan Christian University was used as an example. Historical research method was applied to discuss the educational idea, teaching resource, curriculum and teaching content in 1960s and 1970s through literature investigation and oral history interview, in order to understand the path of architectural education during the early stage in Taiwan after the war. After discussion and analysis, the practicing process and content of modern architectural education in Taiwan after the war can be summarized into a few points in terms of the development of architectural education in Department of Architecture of Chung Yuan Christian University. Furthermore, some of the characteristics in the development context is continued or changed. In terms of the teaching content, due to the influence of teaching resources in different periods, the curriculum characteristic has changed from “Beaux” to “Bauhaus.” In terms of the training of architectural design, the design thinking has changed from “drawing” to “theory. Moreover, as affected by teaching resources of central system and urban development in Taiwan, architectural history and urbanization course became important teaching curricula in 1960s and 1970s. They also influenced the research field of Department of Architecture of Chung Yuan Christian University in the later period. Overall, Department of Architecture of Chung Yuan Christian University is very important and representative in the development of architectural education in Taiwan after the war. For example, in terms of the architecture field in Taiwan, the education characteristics in architecture professionalism led it became the main source of experts in architectural practice in Taiwan after the war. In view of the development of architectural education system in Taiwan, the implementation of the 5-year system and the curriculum reform of removing engineering course were very innovative educational ideas at the time. For the passing-on of the whole architectural education, the teaching resource of central system in China opened a new chapter in modern architectural education in China and has a special status in the passing-on. Teachers who studied in the USA brought in American-style professional architecture training in the architectural education practice period in the 1970s and became the main education characteristic at the time.

The Executive Yuan of the Republic of China has announced “Energy Continuity Guidelines” in 2008 which requests energy consumptions of all schools has to reduce at least 1% annually. Therefore, universities are bound to conduct the assessment and improvement of energy efficiency actions within short time of period. However, the managing team will face three difficulties under different demands for energy in different departments in the university: i) they would not know "actual energy consumption", ii) lack of appropriate evaluation criteria, iii) unable to provide the most energy-saving potential of improved management direction. The purpose of this case study is to assist department managers to resolve the difficulties they encountered and the research goals are: (1) to establish a Building Energy Evaluation System, BEES; (2) a case study of NTUST Architecture Department, established a minimum energy requirements can satisfying various types space patterns; (3) a case study of NTUST Architecture Department, BEES operation and propose recommendations for improvement. This study will adopt a literature review, field surveys and methods of operation to operate, in order to complete the three research purposes. First of all, the BEES developed under this case study will obtain the departments "reality energy consumption" through the computer simulation of energy and differences space mood as a concept in various types space patterns, set various types space "standard usage settings" to help managers obtain the most economical and reasonable "standard energy consumption", and to serve as an ideal energy base of the department. Then re-calculate the department resource to obtain "floating energy consumption" and "energy efficiency index" analysis of energy efficiency (energy efficiency index analysis, the proportion of various types of equipment, sensitivity analysis of using model) to provide department manager advice and to improve the direction, then response to University of department managers its three difficulties encountered, moreover, this study characteristics of building energy factor classification, five types of factors (climate, building, equipment, load and use) are divided into categories according to characteristics of "building environmental factors" and "human use factors" and to establish its "standard usage settings". The setting range is "human use factor" of the load factor (human density, office equipment and miscellaneous equipment density) and the use of factors (time, space operations, air conditioning temperature settings). Finally, this study through the Architecture Department of NTUST to practice, estimates the department "reality energy consumption" is 179.97 kWh/m2-yr, ideally dissipate benchmark is 132.91 kWh/m2-yr ( standard energy consumption), and also has 35.4% of the energy saving potential. Department of Architecture, where the seventh floor is the most energy-saving space (54.8%), the primary focus of the improvement is the research and work space for the air conditioning temperature setting, and the operation of the corridor and work space of time.

The space of architectural schools, different from that of other disciplines, must serve the activities of the specific form of education. The students spend long time in the specific space for learning and practice. The environment facilitates the most direct spatial experiences and further influences the students’ perception and comprehension of architectural learning and their development of life experiences. The students’ behaviors would in turn intervene the form of the space. Architectural schools have compact relationship between environment and users. The research explores the questions of how the students of Ming Chuan University Department of Architecture expect and experience the 5th floor courtyard of the Design Building for learning and everyday life. Through the method of questionnaire, the research induces the evaluations of the space from the viewpoint of students as users, measures the students’ satisfaction and expectation of intervention works within the courtyard. The analysis also produces the suggestions for the Department about the future improvements, rearrangements and utility of the space for educational purposes. The research indicates the inconvenience factors of equipment, physical environment and intervention works. It also argues the students’ design works can respond to the actual spatial problems. The students’ design intervention not only can be used for the training of observation skills, and for the cultivation of positive attitude of active resolving real spatial problems through professionalism of design. Hence it can embody the philosophy of learning-by-doing of architectural education. Current environment of the courtyard and the students’ intervention works, the research also discovers, can assist the communication and relaxation. This feature can be used to promote connection between faculty and students, and to enhance the students’ coherence. The ongoing production of intervention works can contribute to the image of continued retransformation of this space. Further, the research indicates, the encouragement of students’ design intervention can possibly extend the collective memory of this space through future students’ learning experiences and empower emotional inheritance.

The learning environment attaching equal importance to both practice and theory is increasingly preferred by people in selection of education in response to working in the modern pluralistic society. In order to allow students to cultivate their sense of space in terms of environment in their daily learning immediately after admission and further improve their sensitivity in learning spatial knowledge, “Department of Architecture, Tunghai University” started to design teaching space and established the special hall for Department of Architecture based on students’ needs from 1976. Therefore, this study was to discuss the importance of design of education space in universities based on the case of “Hall of Department of Architecture, Tunghai University”, and understand the development history of Hall of Department of Architecture through literature review. This study covered the spatial organization in 3 periods after the establishment of the Hall of the Department of Architecture in 1976. Then, research on details was implemented through quantitative analysis of “space syntax”. Values of “spatial unit shape (convex space)” and “spatial generatrix shape (axis)” generated by spatial structure and the implications of such data were analyzed by using “UCL Depth map” software, in hope of validating the correlation among and uniqueness of components in the space in this case thereby. Set out below are the findings of this study: 1) as for the overall changes of “Hall of Department of Architecture, Tunghai University” before and after expansion in the 3 periods, the overall convenience value of its space before and after expansion showed no significant changes, but the overall convenience value of generatrix reduced significantly; the overall extent of visual penetration of both space and generatrix increased, indicating that the thoughtfulness of space of the hall improved, such that it would be easier for people to find their way in the space after expansion and generatrix was smoother; while each space within the hall was more independent after expansion. As for current planning and design of spatial arrangement within the hall, based on the issues and improvement methods proposed for department library, a department library should be located in a convenient position in terms of space and generatrix, so as to help students find the books and materials they need for study. However, the department library is now located in a less convenient position, and the position in 1976 is recommended based on the data of department library alone.

Purpose of this study are: (1) Taiwan University of Science and Technology as a case study, analysis of the status of consumption and construction-type relationship. (2) Survey the Department of Architecture for a target. Analysis space categories with electricity consumption variation. (3) The establishment of actual consumption estimation method. Analysis building’s electricity data of case study recently. Electricity consumption with large differences in three building types, and the highest electricity intensity was research’s building type. This study investigated each space unit in architecture department. Spatial unit used by the user and the space’s function were divided into seven categories. Recording the equipment usage data of each space unit. Based on the space use patterns (equipment density, use of time and personnel utilization) provided the space consumption compute method. Computing seven space categories consumption intensity of architecture. According to the result of several space type electric consumption, the study had save energy suggestions as follows: "Lab" and "Studio" space types were with high-EUI phenomenon. In order to reduce energy use, we should focus on air conditioning maintenance and decrease energy consumption situation with low usage rate. "Professor’s Office" space type had the equipment EUI higher situation. Therefore, proposed to the hotel-style management trends for the future management of electrical energy.

Basic Design is the most important curriculum in the spread of modernist spatial cognition. Based on the typical divide between design and architectural education, the Basic Design can be seen as the philosophical foundation of the architectural education. This research is aimed to focus on Spatial Conception of the Basic Design Curriculum at the end of the 20th Century in Taiwan, especially to its content and shift, while raising two critical questions, to first identify what are the keywords within the conception vocabulary within the text content of the design curriculum; two is to investigate on how these keywords are able to present what types of knowledge episteme with their inherited basic assumption on architecture. Based on the necessity to research and create the Basic Design curriculum, Tamkang Architecture has formulated its doubt, adjustment and correction of its stance during the process of structuring its Basic Design curriculum. On the teaching model structured based on text format instruction, it has studied the shift for the spatial conception to develop eight specific keywords and their respective knowledge base, while engaging in the knowledge summarization process based the trends of spatial concept of the 1990’s to develop a design curriculum rationale and method derived from the interpretation of specific keywords. By utilizing vocabulary to identify knowledge model, the research has discovered that the fine art principles were still the dominated as the core fundamental value underpinning the basic design education at Tamkang Architecture until 1980s. The Basic Design Curriculum in architectural education in Taiwan embarked a clear shift of paradigm during the mid-1990, and Tamkang embraced this educational trend in 1992, and in a subsequent 5-year span to develop a new set of basic design education curriculum to replace a design teaching tradition that had last for more than 20 years, which further transcends a departmental goal to create a basic design education based on architecture that originally initiated back in 1972. There was a brief attempt between 1993-96 to incorporate environmental awareness into the basic design curriculum in order to restructure the descriptive language for spatial interpretation. With the general acceptance of the Westernized educational philosophy during 1997-2001, the adaptation of American style curriculum model has signified a successful achievement transplant of the design curriculum restructuring goal set forth since the 1970’s. From a power relation point of view, this research also demonstrates the fact that knowledge of transfer is inevitably a product of result power struggle between various competing interested groups. In spite of different design philosophies between the East and West Coasts brand of modernism, Tamkang was able to create an assemblage form of teaching method by accident that mainly attributed to an unique historical condition which intentionally bypassing the debate discussion of architectural autonomy point of view. Within the episteme of spatial conception based on the bricolage of eight keywords in curriculum, there is an attempt to create a dialogue with the British architectural historian, Adrain Forty who discoursed of the word "space", where he pointed out that the meaning of space lost the definition of real life experience during its importation from Europe into America, and that is the linkage to the issues resulting from the modernist spatial interpretation. During the mid-1990’s Tamkang’s Basic Design Curriculum was structured with an attempt to make up the lost meaning. However, since the development of special concept is putting too much emphasis on formalism while the social conception vocabulary emphasized by field traits could not be fully applied in the basic design studio, thus making it difficult to expand design research that was based on Taiwan as a site-specific curriculum theory. The suggested conclusion is therefore to build a vocabulary network with emphasis on site-relation structure, based on the reconsideration the action in which the condition of the design is made, which will always nurtured an academic landscape that is equipped with uniquely linked format of basic design curriculum.

In recent years, countries in the world have been aware of global warming and climate anomalies, so the concept of environmental protection is on the rise. And the government advocated the concept of “energy saving and carbon reduction”, and experts in the field have tried to thorough their own professional often to this problem, and the rapid growth of information and communication technology the impact of the development, science and technology, has changed human life mode. Through a combination of information and communication technology and construction field the in Telligent system into building space. Increase users through after the introduction of comfort, convenience and reduce energy use, a more convenient life for the future. In this study, process and improve the existing building construction record smart space, and through the smart system control air conditioning, in the form of constrains on energy consumption. In order to face of fingerprint identification system on the indoor the laboratory safety and take attendance, hope to achieve safety monitoring.

In recent years the Taiwanese government plans to establish and execute the policies about energy saving. However, the government fails to offer enough information of the cost of energy-saving techniques and its energy efficiency data, and many colleges, such as National Taiwan University (NTU) and National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (NTUST) are forced to use the air conditioning automatic shut-down devices (ACASDs), which lake of scientific evidence. In view of the importance of air-conditioning energy-saving techniques, the motives of our research focus on three parts: (1)Proposing energy saving techniques and the saving potential of air-conditioning systemswhile analyzing international and domesticscientific literatures. (2) Evaluating the energy efficiency of an ACASD(3) Discussing the relationship between theshut-down cycle of ACASD,and its energy efficiency. While analyzing several scientific literaturesabout air-conditioning system, the results showed that the saving potential of avariable frequency drive (VFD) in acentral air conditioning system is 8.6 to 19.7 %; 18.2 % for the cooling water setting ofachiller system, 14.1% for awater mist system, 7 % for a controlled water mist, 23 to 30 % for anew air conditioning system, and 6 % for aventilated cooling tower. Additionally, while analyzing scientific literatures about split air-conditioning system, the saving potential is determined to be 10% for a VFD and 4 to 15% for a water mist system. When increasing the distance between outdoor compressors, the saving potential becomes to be 18%. Besides, the saving potential of an ACASD has not been determined yet. According to the datacollected from architecture department building at NTUST, the energy efficiency of an ACASD is negligible in 7th, 8th, and 9th floor. This explains that the effect of energy saving is measly when the air temperatures are comparable before and after the installation of an ACASD.This experiment alsoconcludes that an ACASD fails in energy saving. The relationship between the shut-down cycleand the depletion of electricity of an air-conditioning system was studied by using architecture department rooms. The results showed that the saving potential is 22% in RB905 with 3 hour shut-down cycle and negligible percent of saving potential in RB906 with 1 hour shut-down cycle. From such experiment, the relationship between energy efficiency andshut-down cycle of an ACASD can also be known. In order to increase the energy efficiency of an ACASD, we proposed that(1) the shut-down cycle of an ACASD should be increased to three hours or more (2) connecting an electric lighting switch with an ACASD. In addition, the two systems are designed to work at different time, and a time delay is required before the shut-down cycle beginswhen the electric lighting switch is off (3) the shut-down cycle operates during only working hours.

Facing the impacts of market transformation, low birthrate and transition of the educational system, the Private Higher Technical and Vocational Education needs to innovate and to establish the marketing strategies for sustainable operation. Meanwhile, the educational institutions need to recognize the students as customers and to develop marketing strategies based on the students’ needs and values. Architecture integrating with interior design has become an oncoming market and industry followed the environmental transition and human life quality. The education of architecture and engineering has progressively transformed into the concept of interior and spatial design, and the source of students for architecture of higher technical and vocational education has been oriented to the fields of commercial design and industrial design. This study was to establish the marketing strategies focused on a case of Department of Architecture and Interior Design in ChengShiu University. The research procedure of this study following by the Porter and SWOT analysis including:1) establishing the 3 main principles including the school’s “branding”, department’s “products and service”, “vision supply” based on literature and document review;2) scholar and expert opinion survey by the ways of unstructured-direct interviews to establish 18 strategies;3) ranking the strategies by the ways of sampling questionnaire. After the statistics and analysis of 335 responding questionnaires by SPSS for Windows 10, the students generally had higher effect on the principle of “vision supply” including the strategies “creating the opportunities of jobs and advance study”, “alliance with industry(supplying part-time and practical training)” and “ counseling for professional certification and national examination”. They had lower effect on the principle of school “branding”. The marketing strategies via this approach would be focused on the ways of vision planning, employment, curriculum and faculty to meet the students’(customers’) needs and to create their values. Therefore, the motive for sustainable operation of the department of architecture and interior design is to establish unique “products” and “services” based on the students’ need and to create the vision for students.
