Abstract:
Hawaii is unique in a variety of ways. One of these is the unusual ethnic mixture that makes up its population; under traditional definitions 76% of its population is “minority” and 24% is “White.” The performance of those of its high school students who go on to the University of Hawaii-Manoa on the SAT-Verbal is higher than the national mean, and on the SAT-Mathematical it is much higher. However, the correlation of SAT scores with first year grades has decreased to almost zero since 1982 among Hawaiian students (although among mainland students at UH it is the same as the national average). In this article we provide the facts for a mystery regarding the low and decreasing validity of the SAT at the University of Hawaii among students from Hawaiian secondary schools. Moreover, while we are unable to provide a complete solution, we do eliminate one onerous suspect and provide an evocative hint.

Abstract:
Graduate students within the Tropical Plant and Soil Sciences Department at the University of Hawaii at Manoa developed a program that addressed their concerns regarding career enhancement and planned a Professional Development Seminar Series. Students identified topics related to enhancing their overall graduate experience and professional development, such as ethics in research, leadership in graduate school and beyond, interviewing skills, and writing critically for publications. Experts from the University of Hawaii and business communities presented 35- to 40-minute seminars on the various topics. Expectations of the students included participation in discussion sessions and completion of a critical thinking exercise after each presentation. Course evaluations revealed that the new seminar series was considered to be as effective as established courses within the department. On a scale from 1 = strongly disagree to 5 = strongly agree, students learned to value new viewpoints [4.2 ± 0.8 (mean ± SD)], related what they learned in class to their own experiences (4.5 ± 0.8), and felt the course was a valuable contribution to their education (4.4 ± 0.9). Students suggested offering the course during fall semesters to incoming students, reinforcing of the critical thinking exercise, and making the course mandatory for first-year graduate students.

his book offers an overview and analysis of the twenty-one powers of the US Congress as enumerated in the Constitution. It is organized by the powers of Congress in the order that they appear in Article I Section 8, Article II Section 2, and the enforcement provisions in the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments. Editor Brien Hallett (University of Hawaii, Manoa) introduces the book with historical background on how the American colonies developed the concepts and structures that led to the Constitution. Most important are social contract theory and the influence of the European commercial revolution in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries that had an impact on the original design of colonial government in America.

Abstract:

This thesis examines the trend and problems surrounding Chinese students studying in the US in general and Chinese students studying at University of Hawaii at Hilo (UH Hilo) in particular. The first chapter provides a review of the Chinese student enrollments in US colleges and universities, as well as the University of Hawaii at Hilo's participation in the Sino American 1+2+1 Dual Degree Program. The second chapter reviews research in the fields of Globalization, Internationalization, and Dual Degree programs. It provides a brief history on government sponsored higher education initiatives between China and the United States. The third chapter is a case study of the UH Hilo's Participation in the Sino American 1+2+1 Dual Degree Program. The historical context of the program's initiation, its administrative structure, course articulation process, individual student academic planning, financial system, language requirements, participating colleges and departments, and reasons for the slow growth of the program will be analyzed. Changes in academic policy over the life of the programs will be discussed in detail.

The fourth chapter provides projections of the student enrollments in China and Chinese students attending colleges and universities in the US using a univariate approach. Several projections using the univariate techniques of double moving average, double exponential smoothing, and ARIMA procedures will be presented. Evaluations on these alternative techniques and their applications are discussed. The fifth chapter provides projections of the Chinese students studying in the US using a multivariate approach. Regressions will be performed, and the results will be compared with those in the fourth chapter. Based on the results in the third, fourth, and fifth chapters, the final chapter will summarize the trend and problems concerning Chinese students studying in the US, analyze policy implications at UH Hilo, and provide suggestions for future Dual Degree programs specific to this university.

Abstract:
The University of Hawai‘i at Manoa Sustainability Courtyard provides a venue for campus engagement to educate and increase awareness of developing solutions and/or adaptations to geopolitical and environmental challenges, particularly energy, water, and food security. Few institutions are immune to coping and addressing triple bottom line issues of energy (economy), water, food and waste management (environment), and workplace comfort and safety concerns (equity), so the limited window of time students have on university campuses is an opportunity to engage and prepare them for an uncertain future (+ education).

Abstract:
Issues surrounding the differences between U.S.-based and Japan-based Japanese American studies have been important to me as a person who has pursued degrees at graduate schools in both countries. I first became interested in the history of Japanese Americans in my junior year of college when a visiting white professor from Seattle told me the story of how her father helped his Japanese American friends during World War II. Because I was unaware of what the “camps” meant, I was shocked to learn about the internment experience of Japanese Americans. After writing my senior thesis based on a month of fieldwork in Los Angeles’s Japanese American community, I enrolled in an ethnic studies master’s course at San Francisco State University. Later, I returned to Japan and completed an American studies PhD in the Area Studies Department at the University of Tokyo. Presently, I teach at a Japanese university. My experiences in both the United States and Japan have often led me to questions surrounding my positionality as a Japan-based scholar who engages in Japanese American studies....

Abstract:
This chapter juxtaposes Asian American scholarship in Japan and the United States, and explores ways in which the field can be pedagogically useful for deconstructing hegemonic social discourses on race, culture, ethnicity and justice both for Japanese and American university students and scholars. Teaching the history of Japanese emigration to the Pan-Pacific region not only helps Japanese students to overcome the historical amnesia about their country’s imperial past, but also helps American students to contextualize the migration from Japan to the US within the overall Japanese emigration history. Structural analyses of race lead to students’ better understanding of different ways in which race has historically created, naturalized and perpetuated social and economic hierarchy within the United States and Japan. Furthermore, learning about the social protest and cultural movements that led to the birth of Asian American studies can promote positive views among university students toward political engagement and social activism.

Wave energy conversion as a means for small scale energy production is approaching commercial viability. This paper presents the undergoing development of a wave energy conversion device at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. The device is a three part point absorber with two buoys, one floating and absorbing incoming waves; the other maintaining tension on the third mechanism, the submerged power-take-off unit. This design is discussed as three concept configurations for WEC construction. The analytical solution is developed, and the buoys response is computed due to a selected and analyzed sea-state.

Abstract:
In 2016, the University of Hawaii at Manoa School of Architecture established the University of Hawaii Community Design Center (UHCDC), working in close collaboration with a state legislator to meet the needs of the state government. This unique governmental alignment introduced a novel form of community design that opened up new academic and extramural space for the school and university, taking the form of a top-down public sector practice as distinct from its more common, bottom-up public interest alternative. This paper presents the results of three years of continuous dialogue with the state legislature and over $2 million in contracts with state agencies, by reflecting on the transformative effects of public sector practice on design pedagogy. This reflection follows three case study courses: an undergraduate basic design studio; an undergraduate concentration design studio; and an advanced professional practice course, all required within Hawaii’s undergraduate and graduate curricula. Each case study lists learning, teaching, and long term benefits that flowed from each public sector partnership, focusing on the potential of this model to strengthen and enrich professional education. The evolution of these courses maps the transition from working on projects to working on systems, also a move toward applying equitable academic and design rigor to marginalized project typologies—e.g. utility buildings, infrastructure, renovation, and repair and maintenance. In addition, UHCDC’s contract work represents an expanded field of practice, including social science research, service and strategy design, community engagement, information design, engineering, and development studies, demonstrating the broader disciplinary demands of the public sector. More importantly, the significant dividends from this three year-old public sector practice identifies an opportunity area for architectural education and practice—design in government.
