Abstract:
After studying modern architectural designs during my one-andone-half year residence in the United States, I have deepened my intellectual consciousness for Modern Chinese Architecture, a subject which I had previously researched through my studies in China. As a multi-national country, the United States has absorbed various foreign cultural systems, including the Chinese culture and its architecture. This has revealed itself in part through many unique "China-towns" such as those in New York, San Francisco, Chicago and other major metropolitan areas.Restricted by city planning and highway systems in the in the United States, the Chinese-like buildings in these American Chinatowns can not perfectly show the principles, philosophy and spirit of authentic Chinese architectural concepts. Rather, they are similar only on their facades by incorporating superficially reproduced symbols, responding to a pragmatic commercial need. This problem brings me to an unanswered question of how to present the Chinese concepts of space in modern architecture, and addresses the significant issues I have studied with my colleagues at the Beijing Institute of Architectural Design. After having worked both for S.O.M. in Chicago and at Ball State University I have made a new attempt to understand the philosophy and built forms of my homeland, based on this oneand-one-half year of study and new experience within western architectural design. Combining this older quest with my new experience became the focus of my thesis.
Department of Architecture

Henrion, Andrea. "The urban observatory : spatial adjustment-perception in space." Virtual Press, 1997. http://liblink.bsu.edu/uhtbin/catkey/1116357.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis develops a creative Project, the "Urban Observatory", situated on a traffic island in the center of Chicago on Wacker Drive and Wabash Avenue along the Chicago River. The aim of the building is to inspire and motivate people to experience the city from a different standpoint and to raise the inhabitant of the city to a different level of perception. The purpose of this study was to explore everyday circumstances and observations of an individual place, the American City and the search for its true genius loci. The main intention is to explore and visualize issues about culturally based differences in behavior and perception of people living in place of 'super scale' and 'high technology' on one side and abandonment and destruction on the other side. The study of the American City and its inhabitants results in an experimental design for an Urban Observatory, an architectural formulation standing in opposition to an architecture of change and fragmentation, an architecture of lost and senseless space. Furthermore the study researches the urban American fabric in practice as well as in theory. The intensive study of the writings of Malcolm Quantrill, Richard Sennett, Toni Hiss and others were the base for developing ideas about how people perceive and react consciously and unconsciously to a specific environment. This helped to identify the frame of the architectural exploration, in order to focus on ideas about: what is architecture of observation in the urban context, and what is the idea of perception in its spatial form?A journal of the design process (sketches, writings), models of varying scale and detail, drawings, photographs, etc. are the working tools to shape the idea of a building and fusing all aspects in a final project.
Department of Architecture

Johnson, Natalie Jo. "Weapons in the City: Weapon Use in Chicago Homicide Cases." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2007. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc5160/.

Full text
Abstract:
This study used data from the homicides in Chicago 1965-1995 dataset (N=9,340) to examine the relationship between the use of certain types of weapons in criminal homicides by gender, race, age, victim-offender relationship, motive, location, and changes over time. Differential association and sex-role theory were utilized to argue why gender differences would occur in type of weapon used in a homicide. Subculture of violence theory was used to emphasize that the place where the homicide occurs, the relationship between the victim and offender, motive of the offender, and the remaining variables affects the type of weapon used to kill. Significant relationships were found for all bivariate analyses performed. The type of weapon used to kill differs most by sex of offender, resulting in a moderately strong association. The type of weapon used to kill differs least by age of offender and although statistically significant, the association between the two is very weak.

Pieterse, Juazel. "John Wayne Gacy: a psychobiographical study." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1011580.

Full text
Abstract:
The study is a psychobiographical study, aiming to explore and describe the life of John Wayne Gacy. He was a well-respected man in his community, entertaining the neighbourhood as Pogo the clown. But there was a dark side to his nature that he tried to keep hidden; yet glimpses of it appeared throughout his life. This dark side was exposed to the public when the police found twenty-seven dead bodies ranging from boys of nine to young men twenty years of age hidden in his basement. The study utilises the Erikson’s psychosocial developmental theory in order to examine Gacy’s life and attempt to establish unique character traits. The study utilises a qualitative single case study approach, and the subject was selected through purposive sampling based on interest value. Archival data was collected from secondary sources to enhance validity. Data was analysed by first organising and reducing information obtained; and then displaying it for discussion of Gacy’s life. Gacy’s life was reconstructed from birth, through adolescence and adulthood and his death. The findings suggest that the theoretical approach considered the biopsychosocial as well as cultural and historical influences of situations and experiences in Gacy’s personality development throughout his lifespan. The main themes of discussion centre around the abuse he experienced and the influence this had on his development, the lack of crisis resolution and thus achievement of virtues, Gacy’s lack of difficulty in establishing attachment and the resulting narcissism and lack of self-abandon, as well his homosexuality, sadism and the murders he ultimately committed. The study highlighted the importance of psychobiographical studies and the value of Erikson’s theory in understanding development. Recommendations for future research in this field was made in the hope of further uncovering and understanding the personality and its development.

Full text
Abstract:
The Chicago Area Transportation Study (CATS) set the standard for urban transportation planning during its original 1955-61 genesis years. This study examined CATS' planning methodology during these years and its 1962 regional transportation plan for the Chicago metropolis which had a planning target year of 1980. The subject focus of this study was on expressway planning while the temporal focus was from the late 1950's to circa 1980. The findings of this study revealed four key reasons why CATS' 1962 expressway plan was largely never implemented. These reasons include the inconsistency of some of CATS' 1962 projections for 1980 versus actual 1980 data, the apolitical orientation of CATS, increased urban environmentalism, and rising expressway infrastructure costs. Yet despite the lack of plan implementation, the literature supports the conclusion that CATS did set the standard, at least in its methodology or planning approach.
Department of Urban Planning

Abstract:
This research and documentation project evaluates the architectural and historic significance of the St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church Complex for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. St. Alphonsus Church was founded as a German National Parish and operated by the Redemptorist Order of priests since 1882, providing religious, social, recreational, and educational opportunities in an imposing complex of five buildings occupying a full city block. The complex, composed of a Church, School, Athenaeum, Rectory, and Convent, is locally significant for its associations with German-American immigration and settlement in Chicago's Lakeview community area. The project includes a narrative description of the five properties and their surroundings, plus a statement of its historic and architectural significance during the period between 1882 and 1928.
Department of Architecture

Chapter 5 details Breckinridge’s collaboration with Edith Abbott at the University of Chicago’s School of Social Service Administration, exploring the pair’s distinctive approach to the professionalization of social work and their consistent emphasis on public welfare programs. Building on their previous collaboration at the private Chicago School of Civics and Philanthropy, Breckinridge and Abbott worked in tandem to build the University of Chicago’s School of Social Service Administration and to make it the premier school of social work in the United States. This chapter examines the two women’s distinctive approach to social work, basing social welfare policy on social science research and emphasizing public programs rather than individual responsibility.

Abstract:
This chapter unearths the history of a literary circle formed in 1927 to publish a journal called Letters and foster appreciation of black literature. Its leader was Chicago Defender city editor Dewey Roscoe Jones, whose reviews in his weekly “Bookshelf” column established him as black Chicago’s premier literary critic and commentator on the Harlem Renaissance. Most participants in Letters were university students, but they were joined by several older writers, including poets Fenton Johnson and W. H. A. Moore. Future Black Chicago Renaissance luminaries Richard Wright and Frank Marshall Davis visited occasionally but felt unwelcome. Recovering this missing link in cultural history deepens scholarly understanding of the New Negro movement beyond 1920s Harlem and of early evolution of an African American literary tradition in Chicago.

Chapter 5 of this book looks at how the DuSable Museum conducted its expansion and physical development in the Black Power era. The museum’s relocation to Washington Park, next to the University of Chicago, reimagined a historically African American social space and neighborhood in the city’s geography and can be considered alongside the highly diverse engagements of Black Power and black arts movement activists around the country with civic-level politics. The politics this expansion effort brought into play also demonstrate how museum work became a significant part of local movements for urban racial equality through the 1960s and early 1970s, a process that further reflected growing interest in African American history.

In 1942, at the end of her sophomore year, she met Carl-Gustav Rossby and joined the war effort, working to train aviation cadets for weather forecasting. She pursued advanced training in meteorology, but the all-male Chicago faculty opposed her at every step. Her interest in the tropics was piqued by a class she took with Herbert Riel, and the two began a long-term and fruitful collaboration. Her marriage to meteorologist Victor Starr was short-lived. Abstract:
The chapter is anchored in a survey of African American-owned small presses, literary journals, and magazines to demonstrate how the Black Arts Movement’s editors negotiated readerly taste and institutional politics to bring Black Arts to the masses. I consider, for example, Dudley Randall at Detroit’s Broadside Press, Naomi Long Madgett at Lotus Press (also Detroit), and Haki Madhubuti (Don L. Lee) at Chicago’s Third World Press alongside Hoyt Fuller’s work for periodicals in Chicago (Negro Digest/Black World), and Nommo, the small literary journal of the Organization of Black American Culture. The chapter also reveals how post-civil rights black literary publics formed and considers how, for example, the establishment of Howard University Press in 1974 extended the black intellectual tradition’s effort to recover a “usable past.”

Abstract:
At the 2015 International Hospital Federation (IHF) World Congress in Chicago, Illinois, USA, the Global Consortium for Healthcare Management Professionalization presented a call to action to professionalize the field of healthcare management. Governments and organizations that seek to realize the benefits of professional healthcare managers may meet this challenge by providing educational opportunities to established executives who are positioned to lead and ultimately mentor future managers. This paper introduces a case example of an executive graduate program in health administration, delivered by a university in the United States in partnership with the Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia, with the aim of developing Saudi healthcare professionals as healthcare leaders. We share challenges, experiences and insights related to adapting a US curriculum for the Saudi working executives during a time of transformation in the Kingdom. We also provide a detailed description of the Executive Management Study, an applied synthesis activity required for all executive learners in the program. Results of an alumni survey are incorporated to demonstrate graduates’ perceptions of the effectiveness of the learning experience.

Abstract:
In this paper, a specialized steady state formulation is developed in order to validate the results obtained using multibody wheel/rail two-point contact algorithms developed at the University of Illinois at Chicago. In the specialized formulation, the wheel set is assumed to have three points of contact with the rail. The steady state curving behavior of the wheel set is examined using this specialized formulation. The balanced steady state curving behavior in which the centrifugal force is equal to the lateral component of the gravity force can be obtained as a special case of the specialized steady state formulation developed in this investigation. No derailment analysis or scenarios are considered in this paper in order to validate the results of both the constraint and elastic contact formulations. The results of the simple specialized formulation are compared with the results of the multibody inverse and forward dynamics approaches. In the inverse dynamics, approach it is assumed that the wheel set will maintain three points of contact with the rail. The inverse dynamics formulation model is conceptually different from the specialized steady state formulation since in the inverse dynamics all the degrees of freedom are specified. In the multibody forward dynamics method, no assumptions are made with regard to the existence of the flange contact.

Sperry, Benjamin R., and Curtis A. Morgan. "Results From the 2011 Hiawatha Service Passenger Study." In 2012 Joint Rail Conference. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2012. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/jrc2012-74129.

Abstract:
The Hiawatha Service is an Amtrak intercity passenger rail service operating a 90-mile route between Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Chicago, Illinois. The route has experienced a steady growth in ridership in recent years, carrying more than 815,000 passengers during the 12-month period ending September 2011. Owing to the route’s trip-time competitiveness with the automobile, frequent daily service, an intermodal connection with the airport in Milwaukee, and the multi-state funding partnership between the states of Wisconsin and Illinois, the Hiawatha Service is a model of how passenger rail can be an integral part of the multimodal transportation system in an intercity corridor. In January 2011, researchers from the Texas Transportation Institute (TTI) passenger rail research group, with financial support from the University Transportation Center for Mobility (UTCM) and in partnership with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), initiated a research project to examine the mobility impacts of the Hiawatha Service intercity passenger rail route. One of the major elements of this research project was an on-board survey of Hiawatha Service passengers, implemented in Spring 2011. This paper reports a summary of selected findings from the 2011 TTI/WisDOT Hiawatha Service passenger survey. The survey obtained valuable information about the current passengers, including data on passenger trip purpose, activities before and after the rail trip, travel alternatives to the Hiawatha Service if the route was not available, motivations for choosing rail for the trip, the impact of potential service changes on increasing ridership, and demographic profile data. A majority of passengers traveling on weekdays were regular commuters or business travelers while personal trips are dominant on weekends. Nearly 70 percent of passengers would drive if the rail service was not available, suggesting that the Hiawatha Service plays a critical role in relieving highway congestion in the region. The results of this study can be used by public agency planning staff and policymakers to guide the development of new intercity passenger rail services in similar corridors across the U.S.

Abstract:
As part of ARL’s Research Library Impact Framework initiative, the University of Illinois Chicago (UIC) conducted a study to demonstrate how the availability and use of library collections impacts faculty productivity and publication patterns over time. To address these questions, the project used various statistics: collection size (measured by journal holdings), collection use (measured by number of references in the publications), number of publications by faculty, publication impact (measured by number of citations), number of co-authors, grant funding, page counts, and faculty demographic information.

Abstract:
This study examines the collaborative processes the Chicago Alliance for Equity in Computer Science (CAFÉCS) uses to conduct and use research. The CAFÉCS RPP is a partnership between Chicago Public Schools (CPS), Loyola University Chicago, The Learning Partnership, DePaul University, and University of Illinois at Chicago. Data used in this analysis comes from three years of evaluation data, and includes an analysis of team documents, meeting observations, and interviews with 25 members of the CAFÉCS RPP team. The analysis examines how three problems are being investigated by the partnership: 1) student failure rate in an introductory computer science course, 2) teachers’ limited use of discussion techniques in an introductory computer science class, and 3) computer science teacher retention. Results from the analysis indicate that the RPP engages in a formalized problem-solving cycle. The problem-solving cycle includes the following steps: First, the Office of Computer Science (OCS) identifies a problem. Next, the CAFÉCS team brainstorms and prioritizes hypotheses to test. Next, data analysis clarifies the problem and the research findings are shared and interpreted by the entire team. Finally, the findings are used to inform OCS improvement strategies and next steps for the CAFÉCS research agenda. There are slight variations in the problem-solving cycle, depending on the stage of understanding of the problem, which has implications for the mode of research (e.g hypothesis testing, research and design, continuous improvement, or evaluation).
