Abstract:
AbstractIn 1968, the Democratic Front organized a folkloric dance recital at the University of Khartoum as a prelude to the upcoming student union elections, a recital that was opposed by the Islamic Movement. This dispute culminated in a riot in which a student was killed, an event referred to as the ‘Ajakoincident’, which is discussed as the first recorded instance of inter-student violence at the university. Drawing on newspaper accounts from the time, secondary sources and first-hand interviews with participants, this article explores the clashing political and moral ideologies at stake within the University of Khartoum, and their links and affective power in relation to Khartoum politics more widely. In the process, it argues that the student political sphere did not simply function as a mirror to the wider political environment, but rather as a mobilizing ground for ideologically based parties, allowing more radical youth groups to influence national dialogues and put pressure on national political actors.

Abstract:
This paper investigated how the articles are used by Sudanese university students studying the English language in Khartoum to highlight their effective mastery of “a”, “an” and “the”. Specifically, the descriptions of proper and improper use of articles by students of Khartoum State universities were done in relation to factors propelling them. The data for the study were drawn from the essays of university students in Khartoum. Through the research design, collection and analysis of first-hand information were done using qualitative approach and techniques. The findings revealed that most Sudan University students are not aware of the right usage of English articles and their application, and using English articles is considered a daunting task during language learning. In addition, most of the challenges faced by students in using articles in English require that both students and teachers pay attention to ways of overcoming them. Hence, teachers should implement academic activities to help English language learners improve their writing abilities, especially on proper usage of articles in English.

Abstract:
This empirical study aims at assessing the attitudes, perception and intention of university students towards entrepreneurship and new venture creation with a focus on gender differences in entrepreneurial perceptions and intentions to start new business in the future. Data were collected using a questionnaire-based survey of 350 students at the University of Khartoum in Sudan. The target population was the students in the final year in the University of Khartoum. The stratified sampling technique was used to select the sample size because the population consisted of a number of subgroups that differed in their characteristics. The results showed significant differences between genders in entrepreneurial intentions and its antecedents. Thus, it is important that customized approaches based on gender are needed for developing entrepreneurial intentions among college students.

Abstract:
The research was conducted in Khartoum, Sudan, with the purpose to see whether there was an awareness on e-health among students in Khartoum and how they perceive health-related information on the Internet. As there is very little covered in this area, this research also aims to cover the gap in information and data of this field in this particular region, as e-health in Africa is an under-researched area in general. The general picture is that health information in Africa lacks coordination and that e-health system implementations are incapable of allocating crucial information on health for a continuity of care.[1] Health care systems are shifting towards models that emphasizes self-care management and two major concerns in the general perception of online based health information are; The limitations in health-seekers’ own ability as well as the limitations/credibility of online information. With this in mind I conducted a qualitative method using focus groups. I did so due to the ability of creating a discussion with a wider range of perspectives, with a larger number of participants during one discussion, rather than one-to-one discussion/interview, and to identify collective thoughts or perspectives in order to see what might be treated/viewed upon as culturally. The targeted groups consisted of students, mixed gender, in the age group of 17-25 in Khartoum. Abstract:
In the Sudanese multilingual context, where French is taught as a second foreign language, educational bodies demonstrate a genuine interest in French language and culture. This thesis focuses on the teaching of French and francophone literature in Sudanese universities. Two main questions are asked: What problems are linked to teaching/learning literature in French as a foreign language courses at the Faculty of arts of the University of Khartoum? And how can the department’s teaching methods for literature modules be improved? The thesis proposes an analysis of the didactic practises through a cross-analysis of class observations, interviews with professors and students, and students’ written work. The foreign language learner cannot be separated from their context, their native language and their learning strategies, which is why the first part of the thesis isdedicated to the Sudanese historical and sociolinguistic context, as well as a brief introduction to the school system. The second part presents the research’s theoretical integration as well as the methodological frame. The third part presents the analysis of the collected data. The main objective of this thesis is to suggest improvement ideas for the teaching of literature at this university

Abstract Thus spoke a ‘Mohamedan schoolmaster’ in the Bengal Infantry stationed in Suakin upon hearing that Kitchener was collecting money in England to build a College in Khartoum. The schoolmaster may have been a figment of Kipling’s imagination but the occasion certainly was not, for Kitchener’s initiative led to the opening of Gordon College in Khartoum in 1902. Gordon College, later to become Khartoum University, is really the starting point for both the themes of this chapter. Firstly, its foundation heralded what was to become known as the ‘educational experiment in the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan’ (Currie 1934) an experiment which was to shape the current education system of Sudan and have a fundamental effect on education development throughout Africa.

Abstract:
Abstract As young Sudanese intellectual returning to his country in 1964 after completing his doctoral studies at the Sorbonne in Paris, Hasan al-Turabi seemed about to begin a career as a distinguished academic. Instead, he became one of the world’s most visible and well-known Muslim activist intellectuals. Hasan al-Turabi had an important appointment in the Faculty of Law at the University of Khartoum when he returned from Paris and was poised to become a member of the Sudanese intellectual establishment. Instead he gave a stirring oration at a political rally that helped to crystallize opposition to the existing Sudanese military regime of Ibrahim Abboud. Turabi was catapulted into the center of the Sudanese political maelstrom, and he has remained there ever since. He has been an important actor in every major political development in Sudan since 1964. Turabi is reported by most observers to have been the leading ideologue in the regime that came to power in Sudan in 1989 under the banner of establishing an authentically Islamic political system and social order, and even when he was relieved of his positions in 1999 he remained a major political figure.

Abstract:
INTRODUCTION The parasitic disease visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is most commonly caused by Leishmania donovani in eastern Africa, currently the region with highest burden worldwide. Current treatment for VL comprises the combination of sodium stibogluconate and paromomycin, SSG/PM; this is toxic, painful, and requires hospitalisation and daily injections. Treatments are urgently needed that are safe, effective, and appropriate for use in remote areas. METHODS We conducted a phase III open-label randomised non-inferiority trial in Ethiopia, Kenya, Sudan, and Uganda. The trial used a parallel-arm design with two arms, comparing the combination regimen of 20 mg/kg/day paromomycin and allometric miltefosine (MF) for 14 days with the current 17-day standard of care, 20 mg/kg/day SSG and 15 mg/kg/day PM. We enrolled adults and children aged 4-50 years with primary VL, without HIV or severe concomitant disease co-infection. The primary endpoint was definitive cure at 6 months’ follow-up. ETHICS This study was approved by the MSF Ethics Review Board and by ethics committees at the Institute of Endemic Diseases, Khartoum, Sudan; Kenya Medical Research Institute, Nairobi, Kenya; Makerere University, Uganda; and the University of Gondar, Ethiopia. Clinicaltrials.gov registry number, NCT03129646. RESULTS 439 predominantly male (80%) patients aged 4 to 50 years were recruited over a period of 29 months. A similar proportion of patients in the PM/MF and the SSG/PM arms achieved definitive cure at 6-month follow-up in primary efficacy analysis using modified intention-to-treat; mITT; 91.2% cure for PM/MF (97.5% confidence interval, CI, 85-98.6) and 91.8% for SSG/PM (97.5% CI, 85.6-99.2). Non-inferiority was not demonstrated in the mITT population, with the upper limit of the 97.5% CI, 7.4%, slightly exceeding the non-inferiority margin of 7%. However, the per protocol analysis did show non-inferiority, with 92% (97.5% CI, 85-98.5) cure in the PM/MF arm, as compared to 91.7% (97.5% CI, 84.7-98.2) in the SSG/PM arm. Most adverse drug reactions (ADR’s) were mild to moderate. The most common expected ADR’s were MF-related vomiting, and PM-related injection site pain and hypoacusis. ADR’s suggesting SSG-related cardiac toxicity were reported in 6.5% (11/170) of patients in the SSG/PM arm. Eighteen serious adverse events were reported in 13 patients, four of which were considered related to study drugs. Fatality rate in the trial was 0.9% (4/439), with one death judged due to SSG-related cardiotoxicity. CONCLUSION The results of this study demonstrate that the 14-day PM/MF regimen achieved a clinically meaningful rate of cure with very similar efficacy to the standard of care, SSG/PM. It was generally well tolerated, with ADR’s as expected, based on the known safety profiles of study drugs. The PM/MF regimen has one fewer painful injection per day, a 3-day shorter treatment duration, and with no risk of SSG-associated life threating cardiotoxicity, as compared to SSG/PM. This regimen may therefore provide a more patient-friendly alternative for adults and children with VL in eastern Africa. CONFLICTS OF INTEREST None declared
