Abstract:
Rural crime and criminal justice practices and responses face different challenges from those experienced in urban contexts. A practitioner-focused roundtable, convened by The International Society for the Study of Rural Crime (www.issrc.net), investigated challenges and innovations in international contexts on issues surrounding rural policing. The roundtable was held online on 20 October 2020 and was moderated by Dr Jessica Peterson, formerly of the University of Nebraska at Kearney (now an Assistant Professor at Southern Oregon University). Panellists were asked to respond to two key questions: What are the key challenges for rural policing? What innovations are being deployed internationally to address these challenges? The following are transcripts of the four presentations from the panelists on this Roundtable.

Abstract:
Abstract To establish an Intergenerational Bonding (IGB) program that pairs undergraduate students at the University of Nebraska at Kearney with older adults of this rural community, we first tested acceptability and feasibility of such a program. We surveyed both groups to identify their interest level in IGB and identify their common interests in activities. Older adults residing in independent dwellings, assisted living homes, and nursing homes and members of community groups were invited to participate in the survey. However, the response rate was low. Given the restrictions of the pandemic, accessing community older adults was challenging. Internet access was low, which made virtual and digital participation modalities impossible; recruitment from assisted living facilities was not successful; and, establishing collaboration with nursing homes was not easy despite initial interest. Building trust and working with community activity group facilitators was ultimately beneficial in recruiting older adults. Collaboration with community-based organizations facilitated the study.

Abstract:
Abstract Social isolation and loneliness are detrimental risk factors to older adult’s physical and psychological well-being and quality of life. Given the current situation of the COVID-19 pandemic, social isolation has risen. Social isolation affects younger adults as well and may increase the chances of depression and anxiety. In this study, we tested the acceptability and feasibility of an Intergenerational Bonding (IGB) Program with older and younger adults. Participants include students aged 19-29 at the University of Nebraska at Kearney and older adults above the age of 60 residing in the community. First, we surveyed younger and older adults to determine their interest level in participating in an IGB Program. Both groups of participants rated their interest in different activities. The most popular activities among both groups included engaging in conversations, board games, and an exchange of skills. Neither of the groups was in favor of participating in free housing opportunities or sports-related activities. Response rates were high in young adults but low in older adults, due to lack of trust. Then, in a pilot study, we measured the feasibility and acceptability of the IGB Program. Older adults residing in independent dwellings, assisted living environments, nursing homes and members of community groups were invited to participate in the intergenerational program. Response rates of older adults were low. Further, establishing collaboration with institutions such as nursing homes was not easy despite initial interest. Building trust and working with community activity group facilitators would be beneficial in recruiting older adults.

Abstract:
The positive influence of undergraduate research and mentoring on student success in STEM fields has been well-established. However, the role that the gender of a research mentor may play in the undergraduate research experience warrants further investigation. This is an especially critical issue to address, since the lack of female role models in STEM fields is acknowledged as an impediment to the success and progress of women pursuing STEM-careers. To evaluate how the gender of undergraduate research mentors influences the research experience of students, we collected and analyzed surveys from undergraduates and alumni who had completed undergraduate research at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. We found that even though students did not select mentors based on gender, there were differences in how students perceived their mentors, depending on the gender of their mentors. Interestingly, students with female mentors were more likely than students with male mentors to report that their research experience had prepared them for a career in science. Further, our gender-pairing analyses revealed that students who expressed that the gender of their mentor had contributed to their relationship with their mentor were more likely to have a female mentor. Our data indicate that female mentors favorably influence the undergraduate research experience of both male and female students. Finally, our study reinforces the conclusions of previous studies demonstrating that undergraduate research and mentoring are beneficial for students. Overall, our findings support that, for students to fully benefit from their undergraduate research experience, undergraduate research opportunities for students should include an equitable representation of female mentors.

Abstract:
Serpentine leafminers, Liriomyza spp. (Diptera: Agromyzidae), are polyphagous insects that feed on numerous crops worldwide including potato. Recently, leafminer larvae (Liriomyza trifolii) have become an economically important pest of potato. The larvae eat the mesophyll of leaflets leaving long winding tunnels inside the leaflets. The photosynthetic effects of larval tunneling on the remaining leaf tissue are unknown. In 2003, physiological responses of potato to leafminer, L. trifolii were evaluated in Kearney, Nebraska, USA. The leaflets were examined 7 and 14 days post infestation for leaf area injury, photosynthetic rates and fluorescence. Leafminers caused up to 13% leaf area loss due to leafminer injury with no effect on the photosynthetic rates of the remaining leaf tissue thus having similar effects as other gross tissue removers. However, fluorescence measures revealed changes in the photosynthetic efficiency and depend of the type of injury, it may lead to early leaf senescence. Field monitoring of L. trifolii infestations showed that treatments with abamectin were effective in reducing leafminer numbers and had no immediate effect on beneficial parasitoid from Eulophidae family suggesting that abamectin is a good option for chemical control.

Abstract:
A summary of geophysical applications peculiar to archaeology and magnetic surveying techniques applied by the University of Nebraska to archaeological sites is presented. In contrast to geophysical targets, the size and depth of the features of interest on archaeological sites are from several centimeters to a few meters. Typical features are historic foundations, wells, privies or prehistoric earthen features such as earth house floors, storage pits, or fire hearths. The most commonly used geophysical methods are resistivity, radar, and magnetometry. The program at the University of Nebraska has concentrated on magnetic surveying field methods based on the use of two magnetometers in the difference mode to correct for temporal variations. Data processing used both microcomputers and mainframe computers. Microcomputers are used in the field and near sites to log data and to do preliminary mapping. Mainframe computers are used for further processing and filtering and for producing a variety of graphical representations of the data for an archaeological audience. Case histories presented are from site surveys in North Dakota, Oklahoma, Colorado, and Nebraska.

Abstract:
This field course offers in-service teachers and pre-service science education majors an opportunity to discover the geological history of the Rocky Mountains and experience inquiry-based geoscience education during a 2-week journey across Wyoming, South Dakota and Nebraska. In 2012 this course utilized the UW-NPS facilities for 3 days in mid-June. The group built upon their growing geological knowledge to investigate the geological evolution of the Teton Range. The 2012 course included six in-service teacher participants (all from Nebraska), two pre-service graduate education majors, and one Geoscience Education Research professor who observed the process. The staff included two instructors and one geology undergraduate teaching assistant. This course is offered through the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Nebraska Math and Science Summer Institute (NMSSI) Program. This course improves educators' ability to teach inquiry-based science, gain knowledge and understanding of geoscience, and to demonstrate effective teaching methods that can integrate geoscience into K-12 learning environments. The UW-NPS facilities provide an excellent opportunity for participants to discover the natural history of the Teton Range and catch up on fieldbook notes while sitting at a real table - - a welcome change from our normal campground setting.
