Abstract:
Medieval studies are not one of the areas that the University of New Brunswick emphasises. It is only in the English Department that they are substantially taught, and the department does not require eidier Old or Middle English for the doctorate. We do have three medievalists: an Anglo-Saxonist (myself) and two middle English specialists—Christa Canitz at the Fredericton campus and Janies Noble at Saint John. It is likely that Old English will disappear from our offerings when I retire in five years.

Abstract:
A condensed history of forestry and forest management in New Brunswick's Crown Forest during the 20th century is presented. It begins with a description of the advanced state of forest management in New Brunswick today. The description provides a sharp contrast to the subsequent detailing of forestry operations, and lack of forest management, that characterized the early decades of the 20th century. A gradual improvement followed, as professional forestry education and technology combined to elevate forestry practice. Next examined is forestry practice and its change across several distinct periods: the inter-wars period (1914–1938), WWII and aftermath (1939–1957), two decades of profound change (1958–1980), and the modern era (1981–2005). It is concluded that a few key events and individuals explain the gradual evolution of forestry in New Brunswick from controlled exploitation to sustainable management. Also suggested is that the Faculty of Forestry and Environmental Management at the University of New Brunswick must continue to attract the brightest and best to its forestry programmes, if New Brunswick is to maintain its leadership position in management of public forests. Abstract:
Purpose. To compare the initial clinical features, laboratory values, and bone mineral density among patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) in Changsha (China) and New Brunswick (USA). Methods. In this retrospective study, we reviewed 169 PHPT patients who presented at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital and 133 PHPT patients who presented at the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University in the same time period. The following characteristics were compared between the groups: age, gender, BMI, serum calcium, alkaline phosphatase (AKP), albumin, intact PTH (iPTH), 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25 (OH) D), fasting blood glucose levels, and bone mineral density (BMD). All these parameters were also compared according to gender and menopausal status. iPTH associations were also assessed along with several other parameters. Results. PHPT patients from Changsha had higher serum calcium, iPTH, and AKP levels but lower 25 (OH) D levels than the patients from New Brunswick (p<0.05). Patients in Changsha had lower T-scores and Z-scores in both the lumbar spine and hip regions than those in New Brunswick (p<0.05). Patients in New Brunswick had lower percentages of parathyroid adenoma and kidney stones. Serum iPTH level was positively correlated with serum calcium and serum AKP levels in both Changsha and New Brunswick (p<0.05). Conclusions. There are distinct biochemical and clinical differences between patients with PHPT in China and the United States. Our study revealed that Asian PHPT patients from Changsha presented more severe PHPT profiles, lower bone mineral density, and higher incidence of renal stones.

Abstract:
Background:There is limited research on responsiveness of prosthetic rehabilitation outcome measures. Objectives:To examine responsiveness of the Box and Block test, Jebsen–Taylor Hand Function tests, Upper Extremity Functional Scale, University of New Brunswick skill and spontaneity tests, Activity Measure for Upper Limb Amputation, and the Patient-Specific Functional Scale.Study design:This was a quasi-experimental study with repeated measurements in a convenience sample of upper limb amputees. Methods:Measures were collected before, during, and after training with the DEKA Arm.Results:Largest effect sizes were observed for Patient-Specific Functional Scale (effect size: 1.59, confidence interval: 1.00, 2.14), Activity Measure for Upper Limb Amputation (effect size: 1.33, confidence interval: 0.73, 1.90), and University of New Brunswick skill test (effect size: 1.18, confidence interval: 0.61, 1.73). Other measures that were responsive to change were Box and Block test, Jebsen–Taylor Hand Function light and heavy can tests, and University of New Brunswick spontaneity test. Responsiveness and pattern of responsiveness varied by prosthetic level. Conclusions:The Box and Block test, Jebsen–Taylor Hand Function light and heavy can tests, University of New Brunswick skill and spontaneity tests, Activities Measure for Upper Limb Amputation, and the Patient-Specific Functional Scale were responsive to change during prosthetic training. These findings have implications for choice of measures for research and practice and inform clinicians about the amount of training necessary to maximize outcomes with the DEKA Arm.Clinical relevanceFindings on responsiveness of outcome measures have implications for the choice of measures for clinical trials and practice. Findings regarding the responsiveness to change over the course of training can inform clinicians about the amount of training that may be necessary to maximize specific outcomes with the DEKA Arm.

Abstract:
AbstractThis study investigates the learning of Referential French by speakers of Acadian French at the university level. One difference between the two varieties lies in their use of auxiliaries in compound tenses. In Acadian French, avoiris used categorically in compound tenses with verbs of inherently directed motion and pronominal verbs, while Referential French usesêtre. A controlled-production task and an acceptability judgment task were administered to 80 speakers of New Brunswick Acadian French who were students at a francophone university in New Brunswick, 40 first-year students and 40 fourth-year students. Results show that, while there is still variability in the fourth-year students’ auxiliary use, their performance is significantly closer to Referential French than that of the first-year students.

Full text
Abstract:
Transport Canada has developed a model, called the Highway User Benefit Assessment Model (HUBAM), as part of their assessment procedure for selecting projects for federal funding. A key step in this model is the estimation of average speed. These speed equations are the focus of the research on which this paper is based. The University of New Brunswick (UNB) recently completed a research project funded by Transport Canada and the New Brunswick Department of Transportation on the factors that influence highway speed. The purpose of the study was to develop speed equations for the Province of New Brunswick which could be incorporated into HUBAM. As part of the research, this paper evaluated the accuracy of the default equations in HUBAM relating speed and flow rate.An analysis of the speed and traffic flow data indicated that HUBAM underestimates speed for New Brunswick conditions. The low estimates appear to result from the curves of speed versus volume to capacity. It was concluded that regression equations developed by UNB should provide more realistic results, since the UNB equations provide a superior estimate of the observed field data. Key words: speed, traffic flow, highway access, highway user costs.

Abstract:
The Computer-Assisted Learning (CAL) experiences of the Department of Forest Resources at the University of New Brunswick are described. The paper defines the principal benefit of CAL as better students rather than better teaching and states that CAL has contributed to the former by enhancing learning in three important ways: (i) new subjects, not possible before, have been introduced; (ii) certain topics have been dealt with more often; (iii) the delivery of some subjects has been better managed. The paper continues with a discussion of three strategies that were successfully employed in implementing the CAL programme. These strategies are (1) the programme emphasized heuristic CAL activities: probelm-solving, self-discovery and "what-if" learning, as opposed to drill and tutorial exercises: (2) the programme was committed to developing and maintaining appropriate CAL infrastructure: a dedicated and fully equipped CAL laboratory, plus the ongoing support of a CAL specialist to assist and educate faculty in integrating and implementing CAL techniques and. avoid reliance upon imported, often inappropriate, courseware; (3) in a limited funding situation the programme deliberately traded microcomputer quality for quantity, thus maximizing number of students accommodated. The paper concludes with a description of several CAL examples taken from undergraduate courses currently offered at the Faculty of Forestry. Key words: computer-assisted learning, forestry education.

Abstract:
Applied breeding programs in New Brunswick have been coordinated for the past 20 years by the New Brunswick Tree Improvement Council. First-generation programs for black spruce (Picea mariana [Mill.] BSP) and jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) consisted of seedling seed orchards and open-pollinated family tests, in contrast to those of white spruce (Picea glauca [Moench] Voss) and tamarack (Larix laricina [Du Roi] K.Koch), which were clonal seed orchards and control-pollinated progeny tests. Production from the seed orchards has been regular and heavy. In only 15 years, most reforestation stock was being grown from orchard seed. Early results from black spruce and jack pine realized gain tests indicate increases of 12 to 20% in volume growth by using genetically improved seed. This is double the prediction that was made when the program started. Stem straightness of jack pine trees has been improved by 25%. Second-generation programs of black spruce and jack pine are well underway and production from these orchards is steadily increasing. Indications are that gains from using this seed will be substantial. An ongoing research and development program has contributed to a more effective breeding program, has increased seed production, and has given further insights into wood quality. The success of the Council's program is due to excellent participation and team work by government, university and industrial agencies and their long-term commitment. Key words: seed production, tree improvement, black spruce, white spruce, jack pine, tamarack

Abstract:
In 2015, the University of New Brunswick hosted the Kawaskimhon Talking Circle Moot. The moot problem was based on the case of Buctouche First Nation v. New Brunswick. The applicant First Nation applied to the courts for an injunction opposing the New Brunswick government’s forest strategy. The forest strategy increased the annual harvesting of softwood timber while reducing the area of Crown-protected conservation forest. Participants were assigned clients and asked to represent these clients’ interests and perspectives. This article presents the argument made on behalf of the Council of Traditional Elders and Chiefs of the Mi’kmaq peoples. Their interests consist of protecting the traditional lands of the Mi’kmaq people while recognizing that the Mi’kmaq have a legal duty to the forests upon which they depend. The argument is presented as a dialogue between two Indigenous tricksters—Klooscap (a Mi’kmaq trickster) and Wesakechak (a Cree trickster). The tricksters advance their position using Mi’kmaq law. In particular, the tricksters focus on the environmental and constitutional principle of netukulimk. Netukulimk is a theory of sustainability that is offered as an alternative framework to the colonial laws that currently dominate Canadian Aboriginal legal issues. The use of Mi’kmaq law presents opportunities for self-governance by recognizing and applying Mi’kmaq legal obligations to the natural world. This article concludes with a brief commentary on the application of Indigenous law in this fictionalized context and its future as an influence on and alternative to Canadian Aboriginal law.

Abstract:
The Paul A. Stellhorn Undergraduate Paper in New Jersey History Award was established in 2004 to honor Paul A. Stellhorn (1947-2001), a distinguished historian and public servant who worked for the New Jersey Historical Commission, the New Jersey Committee (now Council) for the Humanities, and the Newark Pubic Library. An especially active and effective member of the New Jersey history community, he did much to expand the audience for New Jersey history and was an effective advocate for public history and a vigorous supporter of scholarship and publication about the state’s history. As a program officer and a grants administrator he helped many of our present historians and humanities scholars to achieve their goals, whether as scholars, history agency personnel, or educators. He earned a Ph.D. in American History from Rutgers University with a dissertation about Newark during the era of the Great Depression. He was the author or editor of many works about New Jersey’s past, especially about its urban history. The Stellhorn Awards consist of a framed certificate and a modest cash award, presented at the New Jersey Historical Commission’s Annual Conference. The Award’s sponsors are the New Jersey Studies Academic Alliance; the New Jersey Historical Commission, New Jersey Department of State; Special Collections and University Archives, Rutgers University Libraries; the New Jersey Caucus, Mid-Atlantic Regional Archives Conference; and the New Jersey Council for History Education. The Stellhorn Award Committee members are Richard Waldron (chair), Mark Lender, Brooke Hunter, and Peter Mickulas. Click here for more information. The following paper by Mr. Federowicz, nominated by Professor Richard L. McCormick, was one of two 2017 winners.

Abstract:
Modern developments in both hardware and software have significantly changed the scope of mapping. The classical approaches, centered around analogue photogrammetry and cartography, are rapidly being supplemented or replaced by digital and analytical methods. Recognizing this, a new comprehensive mapping curriculum is being designed at the University of New Brunswick. It emphasizes the integration of photogrammetry into the mapping process rather than treating it as a separate entity.
