Abstract:
Dr. Brian P. Coppola is Arthur F. Thurnau Professor of Chemistry at the University of Michigan. He was born in 1957, the same year that Sputnik launched, and was educated by many of the progressive school science movements of the 1960s. He excelled in the college preparatory program at Pinkerton Academy, in Derry, NH. He received his B.S. degree in Chemistry in 1978 from the University of New Hampshire, where he also pursued his interest in art, particularly drawing. In 1980, during graduate school at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, while volunteering as the first study group leader in organic chemistry for the Greater University Tutorial Service (GUTS), Coppola had a chance encounter with Harry Behrman. Behrman invented the GUTS program as a part of his PhD in Education, and he ended up sitting in the back of Coppola’s study group room, taking field notes for his thesis. Every week, Behrman and Coppola had a few hours of intense conversation about education as a field of scholarly endeavor, the integration of which into science formed the foundation of Coppola’s professional interests and future plans

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine how the process of creating and implementing sustainability competencies across a university illuminate dynamics of organizational change. The push to advance education for sustainable development in higher education will likely require transformation of existing policies and practices. A set of shared sustainability competencies could guide the integration of sustainability throughout an institution. Design/methodology/approach This paper reports on a case study of one US university, the University of New Hampshire (UNH) that developed institutional-level sustainability competencies. The process used to create and implement sustainability competencies is outlined, and key factors that influenced the associated organizational change are identified. Findings Very few US universities have institutional-level sustainability competencies. At UNH, drivers of organizational change such as overcoming disciplinary boundaries, developing a common vision and working from the bottom-up enabled the creation of institutional sustainability competencies, but the same processes were not enough to drive deeper implementation of the competencies. Originality/value This paper not only identifies the context-specific drivers of the development of institutional sustainability competencies, but also identifies universal themes that can be applied to other institutions embarking on a similar process. Additionally, this paper serves as a foundation for future research exploring how the process of creating institutional sustainability competencies may be linked to how effective they are in shaping subsequent sustainability education.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to describe the development, implementation and impact evaluation of an interactive theater-based workshop by the ADVANCE program at the University of New Hampshire (UNH). The workshop is part of a larger institutional transformation program funded by the National Science Foundation. Design/methodology/approach This institutional transformation program relied upon a systems approach to diagnose potential causes for the underrepresentation of women faculty in certain disciplines. This revealed that increasing awareness of, and reducing, implicit gender bias among members of faculty search committees could, in time, contribute to increasing the representation of women faculty at UNH. A committee charged with developing a faculty workshop to achieve this change identified interactive theater as an effective faculty training approach. The committee oversaw the development of customized scripts, and the hiring of professional actors and a facilitator to implement the workshop. Findings The workshop’s effectiveness in fulfilling its goals was assessed using faculty hiring and composition data, program evaluations, participant interviews and questions in an annual faculty climate survey. Findings indicate that the representation of women faculty increased significantly at UNH since the implementation of the interactive theater workshop. Analysis of the multiple sources of data provides corroborating evidence that a significant portion of the increase is directly attributable to the workshop. Originality/value This paper demonstrates the effectiveness of interactive theater-based workshops in an academic environment and of the systems approach in diagnosing and solving organizational problems.

Abstract On 1 October 2017, the New Hampshire Foundation Act became effective. In 2018, New Hampshire amended the Foundation Act, making several technical corrections. The amendments clarified: that a founder’s contribution of property does not affect the founder’s reserved powers; the statutes governing a protector’s duty of loyalty; a protector’s duty of impartiality and the grounds for removing a protector; and that an individual foundation official’s term ends upon his or her incapacity; they also defined the term ‘principal office’. Those amendments became effective on 8 June 2018.

Abstract In 2018, New Hampshire’s legislature established a study committee charged with re-evaluating the state’s laws governing foundations, trusts, and trust companies. After a series of hearings, the committee generally affirmed the integrity of those laws but recommended a handful of legislative changes. Some of those changes will potentially affect licensed private trust companies, including those organized as foundations. Meanwhile, a set of proposed technical corrections to the Foundation Act remain abeyant.

Abstract:
This study presents the significance of primary and secondary school funding in the State of New Hampshire and its related effects on the University System. Two main research questions are examined. Does the primary and secondary school funding structure impact University System of New Hampshire funding? What impact has the debate around the terms "adequate" and "equitable" had on educational funding? Comparisons between primary and secondary school funding and the University System of New Hampshire funding are examined. With New Hampshire's unique history and large Legislative body, educational funding at all levels can become an often discussed topic. A seventy-five person sample is analyzed and presented in the thesis; as are recommendations for further study.

Abstract:
International students often desire to study overseas and many countries, including New Zealand, welcome them into their schools and universities. Students from Mainland China, one of the most populous countries in the world and, until quite recently closed to the rest of the world, have, in the past few years, made up the large majority of those who come to New Zealand to study. Those wishing to enter university after completing high school in China must acquire a specified level of English and successfully complete a two semester long Foundation Studies course, before being eligible for undergraduate study. Research into independent or self-regulated learning has shown that Western (mainly American) students are much more successful academically and enjoy their studies more if they are willing and able to self-regulate their learning. This research has occurred mostly in Western settings with Western participants. The present research using a mixed methods approach aimed to examine the self-regulated learning, epistemological beliefs, demographic factors and personality traits of Mainland Chinese students studying in the Foundation Studies course and to determine whether any of these factors appeared to have any appreciable effect on their experiences in the course and on their final outcomes. The research found that while no one specific factor seemed to determine experiences and outcomes, it would appear that personality characteristics of face, optimism and other Dependability scores may mediate factors such as ability (measured by grades), length of time in the country, self-regulated learning and motivational strategies (such as organisation, time management, effort regulation and self-efficacy), and previous independent learning to influence these experiences and outcomes. While it appears that the North American theory of self-regulated learning is applicable to these students, it seems that cultural beliefs may affect which self-regulatory factor is most salient in their academic outcomes. Further research would be valuable to clarify these differences.

Abstract:
In the rapidly changing ‘knowledge economy’ where ‘innovation’ and ‘responsiveness’ are vital, tertiary education can be at a point transformation. Since the late 1990s the New Zealand government began to shift part of its tertiary education policy with an increasing focus on what is commonly called ‘foundation’ education. The shift was aimed at ensuring all New Zealanders are equipped for the knowledge economy and raising the skills of individuals. A variety of research and education programmes were launched, and existing foundation or bridging programmes strengthened through policy, research and educational endeavours. Bridging education programmes (a subset of foundation education) are designed to prepare non-traditional and under-prepared students for ongoing study at a higher level. This current research sought to identify the influence of a university bridging programme (Level 4) on students who progressed into further study at undergraduate level. The bridging programme commenced in 2003 providing a pathway for students into undergraduate health degrees. The key question for this thesis was: how does bridging education influence students? To determine the influence of the bridging programme, this research was based on a case-study of seven students who completed four or eight papers in the bridging programme. Participants were in ongoing study (for at least one year) in a Bachelor of Health Science (any major). The methodology was qualitative in design, drawing extensively on a case-study approach to research the influences of the bridging programme. The method of data collection utilised was individual semi-structured interviews with former bridging students to ascertain their perceptions, views and experiences of the influence of a bridging programme, both historically and currently. In examining this unique context, information on the influences of bridging education was explored and the importance of bridging education, from the participant’s perspective, understood more clearly. This thesis and the research within revealed that the influence of the bridging programme began at the participant’s time of enrolment and continued into their undergraduate study and their lives. The bridging programme influenced the way participant’s interacted with a range of factors including: the institution; their undergraduate programme; with educators and peers; and with family, friends and others in society. Equally, it is acknowledged that these factors influenced the participant’s, facilitating or impeding their ongoing learning. The participants also identified several challenges (financial and relational) related to the influence of tertiary study which they faced. The research revealed the programme influenced their ongoing success and continuation in undergraduate study. The programme provided an effective bridge into tertiary education (academically, emotionally and socially). Participant’s acknowledged the influence on their cognitive and meta-cognitive growth and development. The range of tertiary leaning skills and knowledge gained and/or enhanced was considerable. Close links between the academic skills taught in the bridging programme and required in undergraduate study were evident. Positive improvements in confidence, self-efficacy and motivation were also attributed to the influence of the programme. Holistic personal development occurred as the skills and knowledge gained and developed were transferred and extended from academia into other areas of the lives of former bridging students and thus further influenced their family, personal friends and society. The influence of the bridging programme has enabled new opportunities, ways of being and employment to become more than a dream, but a reality which the participants continue to move towards. Overall, it could be claimed that the influence of the bridging programme was holistic. A series of recommendations are provided for theory, policy and practice. The significance for social issues and action are discussed and avenues for further research outlined.

Abstract:
In this study of a grassroots political pressure group, I have assessed the role of religious motivations alongside that of the professional organizer. These organizers, affiliated with Saul Alinsky's Industrial Areas Foundation, must work to present a united coalition made up of congregational groups of diverse backgrounds. This need for coherence and organizational planning is balanced with the members' desire to constructively help the city through the empowerment of its citizens. Limited time and resources are divided between internal meetings and efforts to obtain concrete results. At the same time, there are questions of whether organizational power resides in the formal roles taken up by the group's leaders or on the periphery, being wielded by the congregational pastors

Abstract:
D.Ed.
The University of Venda is situated in an educationally disadvantaged environment. The study skills training programme was introduced in the Faculty of Humanities, Management Sciences and Law Foundation Programme to enhance students’ academic performance through structured interventions incorporating learning strategies, effective time management, and self-concept enhancement, among other skills. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the study skills training programme for disadvantaged students in the Foundation Programme at the University of Venda, and to modify the current study skills training programme based on the findings of the research. Comparison was done between students exposed to the study skills training programme (experimental group) and those students that were not exposed to the programme (control group). The comparison focused on study habits, attitudes, study methods as well as academic performance of both groups. The study was completed in two phases. In the first phase, quantitative and qualitative data were collected through the mixed methods sequential explanatory research design. The researcher first collected and analysed the quantitative data. The qualitative data were collected and analysed second in the sequence and helped to explain the quantitative results obtained earlier. The Survey of Study Habits and Attitudes (SSHA) and the Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) were used to collect quantitative data. Qualitative data collection was done by means of focus group as well as individual interviews. The results indicated that the academic performance of the experimental group was lower as compared to that of the control group. The current study skills training programme did not do enough in raising the motivational levels of students in the Foundation Programme (experimental group). One would therefore conclude that there were some deficiencies in the programme. The control group appeared to be a better group academically compared to the experimental group. The main determinant therefore appears to be potential rather than training. The literature review has yielded important information regarding the enhancement of academic performance of students. For example, it was noted from the literature that the use of a particular learning approach (strategy) should be linked to the learning context as well as the type of learning task.

"Has ultraviolet disinfection technology reached critical mass in the wastewater treatment industry? A case study network analysis of facilities in Vermont and New Hampshire to determine the status of opinion leadership acceptance of ultraviolet light as a replacement for chlorine in the disinfection process." Tulane University, 2004.

Abstract:
A critical mass of adopters, a majority of which are usually opinion leaders, is required for the diffusion of any innovation to become self-sustaining. All public wastewater facilities in Vermont and New Hampshire were surveyed to determine which facilities exchange information, which have adopted UV, and what characteristics are common among adopters, non-adopters, and opinion leaders. Two networks, based on the exchange of general information and information about disinfection technology, were constructed using UCINET; they indicate UV has likely been adopted by a critical mass. Opinion leader facilities' employees interact with consultants and vendors. Opinion leader facilities' managers work closely with their staff and are active in professional organizations. Non-adopter opinion leader facilities are fiscally conservative while innovative opinion leader facilities are shaped by decisions of the community's elected officials. Distance between facilities was mapped using GIS software and did not influence the type of disinfection technology adopted

Abstract:
Abstract Narrative is introduced as a cultural practice and life form which contributes to creating the foundation of our lives as it helps us to interpret the world, through stories, in which we must be able to act. Borrowed from Ricœur (Time and narrative: The configuration of time in fictional narrative (Vol. 2, K. McLaughlin & D. Pellauer, Trans). Chicago, IL: The University of Chicago Press (1985) and The course of recognition (D. Pellauer, Trans). Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press (2005).), the concepts of time and space are presented as the contexts and products of narrative. The functions of storytelling are discussed under the heading of “technologies of Self-construction” (inspired by Foucault, Technologies of the self. In L. H. Martin, H. Gutman, & P. H. Hutton (Eds.), Technologies of the self: A seminar with Michel Foucault (pp. 16–49). Amherst, MA: The University of Massachusetts Press (1988).), which provide orientation, self-understanding, and transgression. These need to be developed within the constraints of social norms—so the theory goes—and yet subjects still have some room to move within the process of adopting norms (Butler, Giving an account of oneself. New York, NY: Fordham University Press (2005).).

In 2019, Southern New Hampshire University (SNHU or University) convened a Digital Credentials Lab (DCL) team to research, design, and pilot micro-credentials. The goal was to determine if there was a demand for this type of “alternative” learning experience in the market to see if it could be sustainable within the current higher education framework at the University. Through rigorous research, including both internal and external interviews, multiple pilots, and testing, the DCL sought to answer these questions and determine if micro-credentials could add more diversity to the SNHU catalog. In this chapter, the authors offer insight and experience, including findings from various pilots and learner feedback, to help inform other institutions that may be considering offering micro-credentials.

Abstract:
This chapter focuses on the Rockefeller Foundation’s support of university new music centers and contemporary chamber ensembles, offering new insights into a commonly understood historiography of U.S. twentieth-century music: the dominance and prestige of experimental music and serialism at universities. Most notably, composers at Columbia, Princeton, the University of Chicago, and Mills College served dually as outside experts and commissioned artists and performers. Milton Babbitt, Otto Luening, and Vladimir Ussachevsky benefited greatly from their involvement at Rockefeller and the Columbia–Princeton Electronic Music Center. The composers and performers justified their work initially through the Soviet threat and rivalries with European studios, and later with innovation and creativity. The new music ensembles solidified a musical circuit that crisscrossed the country, making stops at many Rockefeller-funded centers. The foundation revealed ways it was both an advertent and inadvertent patron of what New Yorker critic Winthrop Sargeant pejoratively referred to as “foundation music.”

If you were to go back just three years, the name “Minerva” was most commonly associated with the mythological Roman goddess of wisdom. Today, it is a registered trademark and refers to the most selective university program on the planet. How did that happen? In this chapter, we describe the journey of building a prestigious brand from scratch—how we got started with just a name and developed brand meaning, values, visual and verbal identity, and a set of principles that has become a foundation of the institution today. The key has been to take this well beyond a name and logo, turning the brand concepts into a working framework for every single person at Minerva, regardless of role.

Abstract:
Offshore wind turbine is a new solution of the energy crisis, and stable foundation is an important guarantee for its safety. An important characteristic of wind turbine foundation is to bear the vertical load, horizontal load and moment at runtime. A large diameter wide-shallow bucket foundation, as a new foundation type, is proposed by Tianjin University for applying to the specific load conditions. The diameter of the foundation is generally more than 30 m, and its embedment ratio is between 0.2 and 0.5. Compared with other traditional forms of ocean engineering foundation, there have been no standards and theories for bucket foundation designing currently. The vertical bearing capacity is an important basic indicator in the process of offshore wind turbine foundation designing, which determines the size of wind turbines and the cost of engineering. This paper proposes two failure mechanisms about vertical bearing capacity of bucket foundation through the experiment. The upper value of vertical bearing capacity of bucket foundation has been derived through the upper bound theorem of classical plasticity theory. Soil damaging rate is specified as a new empirical parameter in the formula. It is defined as the rate between the thickness of the soil which is broken inside the foundation and the radius of foundation, which indicates the range of soil failure. And the number range of soil damaging rate is obtained through the vertical bearing capacity experiments. Relationship between bearing capacity factor Nγ and friction angle also discussed under the specific soil damaging rates. These results are helpful in reducing the uncertainties related to the method of analysis in bearing capacity calculations, paving the way for more cost-effective foundation design.

Abstract:
This paper describes recent research progress at the University of New Hampshire in the area of “Smart Machining Systems (SMS)”. Our approach to SMS is to integrate models with wireless embedded sensor data to monitor and improve the machining process. This paper discusses recent progress in low-cost wireless sensor development, model calibration methods, model accuracy, and tool condition monitoring for SMS. We describe a system that can estimate tool wear using the coefficients of a tangential cutting force model. The model coefficients are estimated by online measurement of spindle motor power. We also show the use of a cutting tool embedded with a wireless vibration sensor to detect the onset of chatter in real-time.

Abstract:
This paper describes recent research progress at the University of New Hampshire in the area of smart machining systems. Central to creating a smart machining system is the challenge of collecting detailed information about the milling process at the tool tip. This paper discusses the design, static calibration, dynamic characterization, and implementation of a low-cost wireless force sensor for end-milling. The sensor is observed to accurately measure force when most of the cutting power is band-limited below the sensor’s natural frequency. Sensor geometry constrains the milling application to a single tooth cutter; while this constraint is impractical for industrial applications, our sensor is shown to provide useful information in a laboratory setting.

This research was carried out to examine the role of educational brand capital applied to public universities in Ireland. To this end, the main contributions in the literature related to the study of brand capital and its application in the Irish educational sector were analyzed, identifying which variables determine brand capital in this sector. Once a suitable model was established, an empirical study was realized using a sample of 423 valid responses from students at the two main public universities in Cork (Ireland). The results obtained will show the repercussion of each variable of the brand capital relative to the determining variables (brand awareness, brand image, perceived quality, and brand loyalty), while laying the foundation for university managers to develop marketing strategies adapted to maximize the building of educational brand capital.

Abstract:
Since 1988, with support from the Foundation Coalition, one of the Engineering Education Coalitions supported by the National Science Foundation, the Dwight Look College of Engineering has invested considerable time and energy in renewing its sophomore engineering courses. The excitement which accompanies the receipt of a large NSF funded program results in an initial enthusiasm and energy that is contagious for both faculty and students. The initial results of a “pilot” program are almost always improved course content, better student attitudes, better retention, etc. However, when the rush wears off and the new courses have to be institutionalized, what happens? What can be learned from consistent, long-term efforts to assess and improve the sophomore engineering science courses? This paper focuses on the introductory sophomore materials science course, Principles of Materials Engineering (ENGR 213). Using data collected from students and evaluation of student performance as measured by course grades and a standardized test, the authors will examine what has been learned since the inception of the course.

Abstract:
Abstract Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) is widely used in industry but is not discussed sufficiently in undergraduate engineering education. In some cases, CFD is studied only from a mathematical perspective, focusing on computational partial differential equations, and in some cases it is introduced as a black-box tool. A hybrid CFD class was developed for undergraduate and graduate students at the University of New Hampshire, which combines the two approaches. The students are exposed to the mathematics and physics behind CFD, and they also utilize OpenFOAM — an open source CFD package — to work on practical problems. Since the code is open-source, the students are able to see and modify it. Although OpenFOAM is challenging due to the minimum graphical user interface, the code-base environment forces the students to learn what the code is doing. Sample assignments and project submissions from the students are presented in the paper.

Abstract:
Three different hydrofoil sections were investigated in the recently renovated High-Speed Cavitation Tunnel (HiCaT) at the University of New Hampshire: a NACA 0015 (reference foil), a NACA 63-424, and a bidirectional version of the NACA 63-424 hydrofoil. Bi-directional hydrofoils are of interest for marine renewable energy conversion, since they allow the elimination of pitch control mechanisms on marine hydrokinetic turbines. Hydrofoil lift and drag were measured for different velocities, pressures, and angles of attack. For some experimental conditions, comparative PIV measurements were performed in the near-wake region. A cavitation inception model for marine hydrokinetic turbines was derived. Cavitation numbers for inception were obtained for the two NACA 63-424 foils by varying pressure at constant speed as well as by varying speed at constant pressure. The performance of the NACA 63-424 and the bidirectional NACA 63-424 was compared.

Abstract:
Abstract An array of close-packed contra-rotating cross-flow vertical-axis tidal rotors, a concept developed to maximize the fraction of flow passage swept, has potential advantages for hydrokinetic power generation. To predict the commercial feasibility of such rotors in large-scale application, a numerical model of a vertical-axis turbine (VAT) with a torque-controlled system is developed using an actuator line model (ALM). The open-source OpenFOAM computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code is first coupled with this ALM model, and efficiently parallelized to examine the characteristics of turbulent flow behind a vertical axis tidal turbine. The numerical model is validated against previous experimental measurements from a 1:6 scale physical model of a three-bladed reference vertical axis tidal turbine at the University of New Hampshire (UNH-RM2). Satisfactory overall agreement is obtained between numerical predictions and measured data on performance and near-wake characteristics, validating the numerical model. Details of the model setup and discussions on its output/results are included in the paper.
