Abstract:
On July 23, 1987, the University of New Orleans (UNO) dedicated its new Engineering Building, which houses a 38.3 m×4.57 m×0–2.134 m deep ship-offshore university laboratory tow tank. This paper covers the initial stages of the project and summarizes the towing tank design for ship-offshore testing. The tank is configured for three purposes: 1) conventional ship research in deep water with calm water or waves; 2) offshore structure testing with provision for observation and anchoring; 3) shallow water research in calm water, current, and waves.

Abstract:
Xavier University of Louisiana (XULA) is a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) university located in New Orleans, Louisiana. As an Historically Black University (HBCU), the university serves a diverse community of students in which many are first generation college graduates. Students enrolled in Design courses at XULA are studying in Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Art programs and majoring in subjects such as Computer Science, Physics, Mass Communication, Art, Business, and Science. The interdisciplinary student environment offers a unique opportunity for collaboration and peer learning, whereby students are able to share diverse perspectives on a topic by relating design processes to their fields of study. In laboratory practice, students work on independent and collaborative projects in Product Design and User Experience by developing work through a design process from ideation to production.

Abstract:
John L. Riddell, though primarily interested in chemistry, botany, and medicine, made considerable contributions to geology. From 1827-1829 he was a student at Rensselaer under Amos Eaton, the first American teacher of geology. Riddell's first scientific lecture, A new theory of the earth, was delivered at Rensselaer in August 1829. It dealt with geological formations and the fossil remains contained therein. From 1830-1832 Riddell presented public subscription lectures in New York, Ontario, Pennsylvania, and Ohio. Late in 1832 he became professor of chemistry and botany at the Ohio Reformed Medical College, where he began to study the geology of the state. Geology of Ohio, his first formal paper on geological subjects, appeared in 1833. Others papers soon followed. He worked with Samuel P. Hildreth on Survey of the geology of Ohio, which was completed in 1836. Soon afterwards, Riddell married and moved to New Orleans, becoming professor of chemistry at the New Orleans Medical College, now Tulane University. He remained in New Orleans until his death nearly thirty years later. In 1839 Riddell attempted to secure state authorization to conduct a geological survey of Louisiana. Also in 1839, he made two excursions to Texas, resulting in his Geology of the Trinity Country, Texas, published in 1839. Finally, in 1841, the Geological Committee of the State of Louisiana was formed, with Riddell as Chairman. There were five other members. Tragically, the result of their work was lost before being published, and no trace of the manuscript is known to exist today. In his later years, Riddell continued to do geological work, including studies of Mississippi River dynamics. He also continued his long teaching career in New Orleans.

Abstract:
From mid-May 2009 to mid-August 2009, I served as an intern in the Marketing department of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. As an intern at this museum, I examined its daily operations, organizational structure, and program planning through the lens of a graduate student in the program of Arts Administration at the University New Orleans. Based on my internship at the Guggenheim, I have written a comprehensive report outlining my experiences and observations at the internationally renowned arts organization. The following report includes a brief history of the organization and description of its mission and organizational structure; details of the projects and tasks I was assigned as an intern; an analysis of the organization’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats; best practices for the industry and competitor analysis; and a description of my contribution to the Museum.

Lorenz, Robert. "Catholic Student Protest and Campus Change at Loyola University in New Orleans, 1964-1971." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2009. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/1000.

Full text
Abstract:
This study analyzes the development of the student protest movement at Loyola University New Orleans from1964 to 1971. It focuses on student protests against racial discrimination and the Vietnam War, student agitation for greater freedom on campus, and battles that Loyola's faculty had with the university administration. This study argues that Loyola's student protesters were acting as Catholics against situations they believed were immoral and unjust. In this sense, they were ahead of the Jesuit clergy at Loyola, who took action only after student protest on those issues. Indeed, student protest filled a void of moral leadership that the Jesuit administration at Loyola failed to provide. Moreover, in the areas of student participation in university governance, changes in curriculum and university restrictions, and student rights and freedoms, the student protesters joined with Catholic commentators who advocated for major changes at the country's Catholic universities.

Dunbar, Jerod F. A. "The Effects of Automated Grading on Computer Science Courses at the University of New Orleans." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2019. https://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/2689.

Abstract:
This is a study of the impacts of the incorporation, into certain points of the Computer Science degree program at the University of New Orleans, of Course Management software with an Autograding component. The software in question, developed at Carnegie Mellon University, is called “Autolab.” We begin by dissecting Autolab in order to gain an understanding of its inner workings. We can then take out understanding of its functionality and apply that to an examination of fundamental changes to courses in the time since they incorporated the software. With that, we then compare Drop, Failure, Withdrawal rate data from before and after the introduction of Autolab. With this collection of data, we can conclude, to a certain extent, that Autolab has had a negligible impact on course outcomes, but a measurable impact on course structure and pedagogy as well as improved quality of life for students and professors, alike.

Darbonne, August J. "A Space of Their Own Color: Black Greek Letter Organizations at the University of New Orleans." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2019. https://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/2602.

Full text
Abstract:
Every semester across the United States, countless students join Greek letter organizations. While some may recognize the Greek letters, many Americans do not know the racial divide within the Greek life system, and the difference of purpose those organizations hold. This study focuses on eight historically Black fraternities and sororities and more specifically, their chapters at the University of New Orleans, a university that throughout its history has had a predominantly White student body, and often fostered an environment overtly and subtly hostile to African-American students. Using oral histories, university yearbooks, and university newspapers this study demonstrates how Black fraternities and sororities at UNO promoted and supported the academic success of African-American students by emphasizing community service work, communal bonds, and connections to campus activities. These organizations provided emotional and academic support for African-American students and actively resisted the racial divisiveness present on their university campus.

Abstract:
The following is a case study of the University of New Orleans Disaster Resistant University project. The Disaster Resistant University project involved the creation, adoption, and implementation of an all-hazards campus mitigation plan. On August 29, 2005 Hurricane Katrina struck the City of New Orleans. This disaster caused the need for a reassessment of the original campus mitigation plan. Both the original plan, and its reassessment, are the subject of this case study.

Abstract:
The life and career of Albert Wicker, Jr. (1869-1928), reflects the growth of the new urban African-American middle class in New Orleans, Louisiana, in the early years of the twentieth century. He spent his career working for advances in education while using memberships in churches, Masonic groups, insurance companies, benevolent societies, and educational leagues to achieve his personal and professional goals. The networks created by him and others along the way illustrate not only complexity of black life in New Orleans but also the growing tendency of differing ethnic groups to work together to achieve common economic, political, social objectives.

The purpose of this paper is to combine and extend existing potential flow theory in order to analyze the linear free surface problem of an Oscillating Water Column (OWC) device and apply it to moonpool design. Analytical results were obtained implementing the previously derived theories, and later compared to experimental results conducted at the University of New Orleans Towing Tank. The model tests consisted of a study of a cylindrical OWC. The theoretical and experimental results of the free surface for the OWC tests agree for the resonant frequency estimation response but they disagree on the amplitude of the response.
