Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to identify prevalence rates of medical problems among flautists. The Flute Health Survey (FHS), a questionnaire with items regarding musculoskeletal and nonmusculoskeletal problems, was distributed at the 1999 National Flute Association annual meeting (n = 40). This questionnaire was pilot tested at the 1999 Texas Flute Festival, which is hosted by the Texas Flute Society. The University of North Texas has posted on the Internet a similar questionnaire regarding the medical problems of all musicians. Responses from the University of North Texas Musician Health Survey (UNT-MHS) were filtered to include only those respondents who denoted flute as their primary instruments (n = 328). Data sets from both surveys were then processed using comparative statistics. Findings show that there was no significant difference between the demographics of the two populations. Only one musculoskeletal site, the left hand, was found to be statistically significant between the two groups. Four nonmusculoskeletal items, depression, earache, headache, and sleep disturbances, were found to be different between the two groups. The overall findings of this comparison show that there are many medical problems facing the flute playing community. Further investigation and observations of this population are necessary.

Abstract:

The University of North Texas Libraries’ Digital Collections are situated as a unified whole within their preservation infrastructure, with three separate user interfaces serving the content to different audiences. These separate interfaces are: The UNT Digital Library (DL), The Portal to Texas History, and The Gateway to Oklahoma History. Situated within each interface are collections, and hosted within these collections are digital objects. One collection, the UNT Scholarly Works Repository, specifically serves UNT’s research and creative contributions and functions as the Institutional repository (IR) for the University of North Texas. Because UNT Scholarly works is seated as a collection amongst other collections, users can access faculty research, not just out of an interest in research from specific faculty members, but also as it ties into the user’s broader understanding of a given topic. With flexible infrastructure and metadata schema that connect collections beneath the umbrella of the wider preservation infrastructure, the UNT DL employs full-text searching and interlinked metadata to strengthen and make visible the connections between objects in different collections. This paper examined how users navigated between other collections within the UNT IR, as well as within the UNT DL. Through this examination, we observed patterns between how users navigated between objects, understood which collections may have related to one another, examined why some unique items were used more than others, and viewed the average number of items used within a session.

Abstract:

Musculoskeletal problems are considered significant health factors for performing artists, especially instrumentalists. Although numerous studies exist that document the extent to which musicians experience these problems, serious consideration has not been given to musicians who play the keyboard, or the type of music played by each instrumentalist. Furthermore, although the Internet is an emerging tool for research, epidemiologists have been surprisingly slow in adapting to this novel way to conduct surveys. Using data derived from the University of North Texas Musician Health Survey (UNT-MHS) conducted over the Internet, this study assessed the prevalence of upper-extremity musculoskeletal problems among 455 keyboard instrumentalists and the association with musician type, daily playing time, gender, and age. Age and gender were found to be significant risk factors, while musician type and daily playing time did not show statistical significance.

Abstract:

Intramurals has a long history in recreational sports. In managing intramural sports programs, the programmer needs a variety of methods to “get the word out. “It is important to consider promotion, publicity, advertising, sponsorship, and public relations. While these are important to all aspects of recreational sports, intramurals is typically the “backbone” of programming. With this in mind, it is essential that the intramural programmer be concerned with reaching all the students possible. This article discusses and compares the methods utilized by four different universities. They are Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, Wake Forest University in Winston Salem, North Carolina, Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia. It is believed that these four universities represent a variety of types of institutions including a small private university in a medium sized town, a combination of traditional and commuter on the edge of a metropolitan area, a traditional private institution in a major metropolitan area, and a traditional state university in a smaller community. It is very important to get the word out, regardless of the type of institution. The greater the variety of approaches used the better the chances to reach all students.

Abstract:

During the more than 37-year brutal Israeli occupation of the West Bankand Gaza, the numbers of North American Jews voicing their oppositionin public have been dispiritingly small. Since the outbreak of the secondIntifada in September 2000, however, Jewish anti-occupation activistshave become a visible political presence in Jewish politics in the UnitedStates and Canada. Such groups as Brit Zedek V’Shalom, the TikkunCommunity, and Junity (Jewish Unity for a Just Peace) have spawneddozens of regional chapters across North America. Local groups such asNot In My Name (Chicago), Jewish Voices against the Occupation(Seattle), and Jews for Global Justice (Portland, Oregon) have sprung upspontaneously in almost every major North American city. Numerous adhoc responses have emerged as well. For example, an “Open Letter fromAmerican Jews,” proclaiming opposition to Israeli government policies inthe Occupied Territories and bearing 4,000 signatures, has appeared as afull-page advertisement in The New York Times as well as in a dozen moreAmerican and British newspapers.While very few of these groups would identify themselves as religiouslyobservant, almost all have invoked a Jewish ethical tradition ofsocial justice, derived from Jewish texts and rabbinical tradition, to maketheir political point. Abstract:

In 1992, there was a collaborative effort in reservoir geophysics involving Amoco, Conoco, Schlumberger, and Stanford University in an attempt to delineate variations in reservoir properties of the Grayburg unit in a West Texas [Formula: see text] pilot at North Cowden Field. Our objective was to go beyond traveltime tomography in characterizing reservoir heterogeneity and flow anisotropy. This effort involved a comprehensive set of measurements to do traveltime tomography, to image reflectors, to analyze channel waves for reservoir continuity, to study shear‐wave splitting for borehole stress‐pattern estimation, and to do seismic anisotropy analysis. All these studies were combined with 3-D surface seismic data and with sonic log interpretation. The results are to be validated in the future with cores and engineering data by history matching of primary, water, and [Formula: see text] injection performance. The implementation of these procedures should provide critical information on reservoir heterogeneities and preferential flow direction. Geophysical methods generally indicated a continuous reservoir zone between wells.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to examine the incidence of hearing problems reported from a heterogeneous group of musicians as a function of both primary performance area and primary instrument. Information for the investigation was obtained from the University of North Texas Musician Health Survey that allows musicians to report medical problems via the World Wide Web. Data were generated from a question regarding the presence or absence of hearing loss. The respondents were grouped according to primary performance area, according to primary instrument, and by primary instrument relative to whether they were classical or non-classical musicians. Results showed that 21.7% of the 3,292 musicians responding perceived having a problem with hearing. Findings showed the highest rate of occurrence was in rock/alternative musicians; in musicians who were included in the nonclassical grouping; and in musicians who played amplified instruments, drum-set, and primary brass instruments. Implications for further research and risk management are discussed.

Abstract:

This study examined the medical problems of musicians who primarily perform on a brass instrument. Data for this study (n = 739) were extracted from the University of North Texas Musician Health Survey data set. Subjects were included if they indicated either trumpet, trombone, French horn, or low brass as their primary instrument. Prevalence rates for one or more musculoskeletal problems were determined for the whole group and by instrument. For those subjects who reported problems at specific sites, average severity levels were derived from responses to a five-point grading scale. Additional prevalence rates for non-musculoskeletal problems were established for the whole group and by instrument. About 60% of the brass musicians reported having one or more musculoskeletal problems. The trombone group reported the highest rate (70%), followed by French horn and low brass (62%), and then trumpet (53%). Results suggest unique physical performance requirements and risks across the four main brass instrument groups and that future studies should examine each brass instrument group individually.

Abstract:

Jazz education plays a prominent role in the music education of students in secondary and postsecondary schools. Although there is some research relative to health risks posed to professional musicians, little information is available as it relates to young musicians at the collegiate and secondary levels. The primary purpose of this study was to assess the risk of music-induced hearing loss to members of a college jazz band using the currently defined damage risk criteria of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) (1983). Dosimeter measurements were made over a 3-day period for five different positions within a University of North Texas jazz ensemble. Measurements obtained from each musician and each position were then compared with current OSHA standards. Findings indicated that when equivalent measures were derived for three hours of exposure, allowable exposure limits were exceeded for ten of the 15 measures obtained. The lead musicians within the ensemble appeared to be at the highest risk for hearing loss. The findings lend further support for the inclusion of musicians in an occupational noise standard.

Abstract:

Horton Foote has won many distinguished awards, including two Academy Awards for screenwriting, the Pulitzer Prize for drama, the Lucille Lortel Award, an Emmy, the William Inge Award, lifetime awards from the Academy of Arts and Letters and the Writer's Guild of America, an Outer Critics Circle Award, the Master American Dramatist Award of the PEN American Center, and the National Medal of the Arts. Yet there has been relatively little written about this important American—and southern—writer. Partly that is because he has written in various media, including theatre, film, and television, gaining substantial but limited fame in each, and much of his work is either produced regionally or staged for a small circle of aficionados in New York, where seemingly simple, understated dramas about coastal southeast Texas are never the rage. This tendency is exacerbated by the production history of the nine plays in The Orphans' Home, the subject of Laurin Porter's book. Staged over twenty years, from readings of the first plays in 1977 to the premiere of the final one, The Death of Papa, at Chapel Hill, North Carolina, in February of 1997, the plays have never been staged together.

Abstract:

The aim of this cross-sectional study was to describe self-reported problems among guitarists and to examine differences associated with type of guitar played. Data for the study were extracted from the University of North Texas Musician Health Survey (UNT-MHS) data set. Subjects for the present study (n = 520) were included if they identified acoustic guitar, electric guitar, electric bass or banjo as their primary instrument. Prevalences for musculoskeletal problems were determined for the total group, by guitar-specific groups, and by gender. Prevalences for nonmusculoskeletal, overall health problems were established for the whole guitar group and by instrument. Of the total subjects, 81% reported one or more musculoskeletal problems. The acoustic guitar group reported the highest prevalence (83%), followed by the banjo (78%), electric bass (77%), and electric guitar groups (74%). The highest site-specific prevalences for the whole group were the left fingers (32.9%), left wrist (29.8%), and left hand (24.7%). Regarding nonmusculoskeletal problems, 66% of the total group perceived stress due to work environment as a moderate to high problem. The total group reported mostly problems with fatigue, depression, headache, and eye strain. The overall findings of the study show that musculoskeletal problems as well as stress-related health problems are a major concern for the guitar community.

This cross-sectional study examined the prevalence of self-reported playing-related musculoskeletal disorders (PRMDs) and stress-related health problems among percussionists. Data for the present study were extracted from the University of North Texas Musician Health Survey (UNT-MHS) data set. Subjects (n = 279) were included if they identified auxiliary percussion (i.e., tambourine, triangle, bells, rattle, wood block), drum set, marimba, steel drum, timpani, vibraphone, xylophone, or other percussion as their primary instrument. Prevalence rates for PRMDs and stress-related health problems were determined for the total percussion group and for separate instrument categories. Of the total group, 77% reported one or more PRMDs. The keyboard percussionists (marimba, vibraphone, xylophone, and steel drum) reported the significantly highest prevalence (89%), followed by auxiliary and other percussionists (79%) and membranophone percussionists, including drum set and timpani (74%). The highest region-specific prevalence of PRMDs for the whole group was found in the bilateral hand and low back regions. Stress due to work environment was considered moderate to high by 75% of the respondents. Regarding stress-related health problems, percussionists reported primarily problems with fatigue, depression, and stage fright. The overall findings of this study show that PRMDs and stress-related health problems are a major concern for percussionists and warrant further research.

Abstract:

The article is devoted to the development of Indology at the University of Hamburg and analyzes the contribution of Hamburg Indologists to the study of ancient and medieval India and the study of modern languages and literature of India in the discipline’s development in the sister city of St. Petersburg. The authors note that the development of Indology has a long history in Germany and the uniqueness of the Hamburg school is observed. Germany had more than forty Indology departments in the 19th century, much more than Great Britain then had. The teaching of Indian languages in Hamburg began in 1914 in the classrooms of the university’s predecessor, the Hamburg Colonial Institute founded in 1908 and dissolved in 1919, soon after World War I. The University of Hamburg started as new and progressive institution of education in Weimar Germany, and continued for the next hundred years, where the teaching of Sanskrit, studying ancient medieval monuments of Indian literature, philosophy, and religious texts reached a global level thanks to outstanding Indologists, such as Walter Schubring, Ludwig Alsdorf, Albrecht Welzer, and Lambert Schmithausen. The article also considers the contribution to the development of Indology in Hamburg by current Professors Eva Wilden, Michael Zimmermann, Harunaga Isaacson et al. Thanks to the activities of these professors and their colleagues from Russia and India such as Tatiana Iosifovna and Ram Prasad Bhatta, the study and teaching of the languages and cultures of India within the framework of the Center for Culture and History of India and Tibet of the Institute of Asia and Africa now includes the study of Tamil language and literature as well as North Indian languages and literature.

Abstract:

One aspect of double reed performance warranting consideration involves the biomechanical stress placed on the human body through the performance of these instruments. At present, inadequate information exists that can effectively answer questions regarding the types of physical problems experienced by oboe and bassoon players and the percentages of players who suffer from such problems. The purpose of this study is to describe medical problems of double reed players utilizing data collected through the University of North Texas Musician Health Survey (UNT-MHS). Sixty survey respondents identified oboe as their primary instrument. The majority of musculoskeletal problems reported by oboists related to the right wrist, right hand, right fingers, right forearm, right neck, and right lower back. In all areas, females reported higher percentages of problems than did males. Among nonmusculoskeletal problems, oboists reported a high incidence of headaches, blackouts/dizziness, and stage fright. Seventy-five subjects identified bassoon as their primary instrument. The majority of musculoskeletal problems reported by bassoonists related to the left wrist, left hand, right wrist, and left fingers. Among nonmusculoskeletal problems, bassoonists reported a high incidence of headaches, eyestrain, and fatigue. Since the lack of a truly randomized sample prevents generalization of these results to the total double-reed-playing population, these results should be interpreted with caution. However, the high rates of right upper extremity dysfunction among oboists and left upper extremity dysfunction among bassoonists illustrated in this study warrant additional research.
