Abstract:
At the University of Ottawa we have a multidisciplinary undergraduate (concentration) program in Medieval Studies housed within the Faculty of Aits. Most of the students take it as a second concentration, most frequently with history, literature, or classics. When we took stock of the program in 1994, it was barely alive, with an enrolment that had been consistently under ten students and no attention given to the program in matters of curriculum or publicity for more than a decade. This situation was not surprising, since all of the university's resources and administrative attention flow through departments and our medieval studies program received only what came its way occasionally and incidentally.

Abstract:
This article reports on case studies of university students participating in the University of Ottawa French Immersion Study (FIS) program, the largest tertiary immersion option in Canada. This program allows Anglophone students to complete an undergraduate degree while taking academic courses in their second official language (French). Semi-structured interviews with case study participants were used to analyze immersion students’ accounts of their experiences within this program. Findings focus on the interactions offered to FIS students and their role in shaping students’ identities and orientation to French and Francophones. Through the FIS, students are able not only to acquire linguistic and disciplinary knowledge, but also engage, often for the first time, in in-depth and daily interactions with the French community. As a result, their discourse reflects an identification and coming together with the Francophone community thereby seeming to bridge a gap between English speakers and French speakers typically found in elementary and secondary immersion programs.

Abstract:
Background: The Ottawa Shanghai Joint School of Medicine (OSJSM) is a campus of the University of Ottawa Medical School in Shanghai, China. This collaboration allowed us to study whether a Canadian curriculum is suitable for the Chinese population. The aim of this study is to evaluate: 1) The OSJSM diabetes curriculum; and 2) The relevancy of the content for the Chinese population. Methods: The diabetes curriculum content was evaluated using a curriculum comparison between the University of Ottawa, OSJSM, and the Shanghai Jiao Tong School of Medicine (SJTSM). A literature search compared the diabetes populations in Canada and China. Interviews determined how physicians and patients manage diabetes. Results: The diabetes curriculum at the OSJSM is identical to that of the University of Ottawa. Canada and China have a similar diabetes prevalence, diagnostic criteria, and management. Although both countries utilize the same screening guidelines for diabetes and its complications, patients in Canada are more likely to adhere to these recommendations. Conclusion: This study suggests that the diabetes content of the University of Ottawa curriculum remains relevant in China. A greater emphasis on the importance of screening for disease complications in the curriculum may facilitate making this a priority for patients and healthcare providers in China.

Abstract:
In a sports medicine center, we prospectively evaluated the Ottawa Ankle Rules over 1 year for their ability to identify clinically significant ankle and midfoot fractures and to reduce the need for radiography. We also developed a modification to improve specificity for malleolar fracture identification. Patients with acute ankle injuries ( 10 days old) had the rules applied and then had radiographs taken. Sensitivity, specificity, and the potential reduction in the use of radiography were calculated for the Ottawa Ankle Rules in 132 patients and for the new “Buffalo” rule in 78 of these patients. There were 11 clinically significant fractures (fracture rate, 8.3% per year). In these 132 patients, the Ottawa Ankle Rules would have reduced the need for radiography by 34%, without any fractures being missed (sensitivity 100%, specificity 37%). In 78 patients, the specificity for malleolar fracture for the new rule was significantly greater than that of the Ottawa Ankle Rules malleolar rule (59% versus 42%), sensitivity remained 100%, and the potential reduction in the need for radiography (54%) was significantly greater. The Ottawa Ankle Rules could significantly reduce the need for radiography in patients with acute ankle and midfoot injuries in this setting without missing clinically significant fractures. The Buffalo modification could improve specificity for malleolar fractures without sacrificing sensitivity and could significantly reduce the need for radiography.

Abstract:
Air photos have been used to support GIS-related research projects at the University of Ottawa, particularly in the field of climate science. The University of Ottawa Library houses a large collection of historical paper air photos and have recently increased efforts to further digitize this collection. Traditionally, the photographs have been searchable through a custom ArcGIS Online Web App, but this standalone portal has been limited in the accessibility and discoverability of these resources. In 2021, the University of Ottawa Library implemented Alma Digital as its institutional DAMS, which allowed its digital assets to be searchable directly within the library catalog, Omni. Following the implementation of this DAMS, close to 1,000 of the Library’s digital air photo collection were added to this platform. This has provided a new discovery portal for these digital air photos. Work to improve the discoverability, organization, and description of these resources, as well as numerous digitization projects, is still ongoing.

From January 29th to February 1st, 2015, a group of University of Ottawa undergraduate students and I hosted an exhibit about the life and research of French physician Dr. Jérôme Lejeune, who in 1959 discovered Trisomy 21, the genetic origin of Down syndrome (DS). Considered the father of modern genetics, Dr. Lejeune believed medicine should serve the patient and not the disease. The exhibit focused on Lejeune’s profound humanity and compassion that accompanied his commitment to scientific truth. It also showed how this great scientist maintained an unshakeable adherence to his faith and conscience despite challenges and adversity. Abstract:
BACKGROUND: Asymptomatic catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are common in hospitalized patients. They are associated with a low incidence of sequelae and morbidity, and in most patients resolve spontaneously on removal of the catheter. As a result, it is not recommended that asymptomatic catheter-associated bacteriuria or candiduria be treated with antimicrobial agents while the catheter remains in place because it may lead to the evolution of resistant flora.OBJECTIVE: To assess the current management of patients with CAUTIs with respect to antimicrobial therapy at The Ottawa Hospital and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute, Ottawa, Ontario.METHODS: A prospective observational study over a period of 26 consecutive days was conducted at The Ottawa Hospital (General and Civic campuses) and the University of Ottawa Heart Institute. Inpatients with an indwelling catheter, a positive urine culture and the absence of UTI signs or symptoms were assessed. Patients were followed for five days to determine whether antimicrobials were prescribed.RESULTS: From March 3 to March 28, 2003, 29 of 119 patients screened met inclusion criteria. Of these 29 patients, 15 (52%) were prescribed antimicrobials and were therefore considered to be inappropriately managed. Differences were observed between the appropriate and inappropriate management groups in terms of duration of stay to positive urine culture and whether yeast or bacteria were isolated from the culture.CONCLUSION: Antimicrobial agents were prescribed in over one-half of CAUTI cases, contrary to recommendations from the literature. Education is required to bring this strongly supported recommendation into clinical practice.
