Abstract:
This paper examines chat abbreviation and slangs of the University of Port Harcourt students. The qualitative research design was used in analyzing the data collected using the descriptive content analysis. The sampling technique adopted in this paper is the purposive sampling technique and source of data for this paper is primarily observations from students of University of Port Harcourt online platforms and social media used by students and interview. The findings of this paper reveal that students of the University of Port Harcourt use single letters, digits and a combination of both to replace words while some of the words are shortened, contracted and clipped. The paper also establishes that the students abbreviate words in order to minimize cost, save time and add style to their writing. The paper further establishes that chat abbreviation and slangs of the University of Port Harcourt students do not follow the rules of grammar of English language since they are composed haphazardly. It was observed that students of University of Port Harcourt do not use their punctuation marks properly in their formal writings. This paper also reveals that chat abbreviations and slangs have affected the proper usage of English language by some of the students of the University of Port Harcourt. This paper recommends that students should become more conscious of the dangers of chat abbreviation in their academics and identify as well as appreciate the appropriate setting in which to use them.

Abstract:
The study examined the effects of Ponzi schemes on students of University of Port Harcourt. Five research questions were formulated to guide the study. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised 37,628 students of the University of Port Harcourt. The sample size is 396 obtained from applying Taro Yamene’s sample size selection technique. The instrument used for data collection was questionnaire titled Effects of Ponzi Schemes on students Questionnaire (EPSSQ). The reliability of the instrument was determined using test re-test method. Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used for analysis which gave a reliability coefficient of 0.81. Mean (x ̅) statistical tool was used to answer the research questions. At the end of the analysis, it was found that some University of Port Harcourt students who participated in Ponzi Schemes were so negatively affected that they could not only pay their accommodation and tuition fees promptly but also could not progress to next levels. Some became so depressed and took ill, while some others dropped out of school. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that the government agencies such as the police, EFCC (Economic and Finance Crimes Commission) etc should be proactive; the policy of “no fee, no exam” initiated and implemented in University of Port Harcourt should be reviewed; guidance counselors should be made to counsel students periodically.

Abstract:
A short-term study was carried out to comparatively evaluate the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) in soot evading Port Harcourt and its environs. Samples were collected from three (3) different locations namely; Eleme Petrochemicals, Rumuodomaya Town, and University of Port Harcourt (Uniport) to determine the level of residual polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and total petroleum hydrocarbons in soot as dispersed from source to the troposphere. The evaluation was carried out using Gas Chromatography Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID) and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS). Soot particles collected from the various locations were trapped in a tenax Gas Chromatography adsorbent tube for Gas chromatography analysis. The total petroleum hydrocarbons were analyzed according to ASTMD 3911. The result of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons obtained from Eleme Petrochemicals (0.04 mg/m 3 ), Rumuodomaya Town (0.02 mg/m 3 ), and University of Port Harcourt (0.01 mg/m 3 ) were below the permissible limit of World Health Organization (W.H.O.) standard for work place of 0.2 mg/m 3 . This indicates that areas under study were free from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons pollution. However, the values of total petroleum hydrocarbons which has no regulatory limit for soot showed high values of 21.44 mg/m 3 (Eleme Petrochemicals), 18.91 mg/m 3 (Rumuodomaya Town), and 12.68 mg/m 3 (University of Port Harcourt). This suggests that the weight of total petroleum hydrocarbons inhaled by humans and deposited on the body were unsafe. This study recommends safety measures to be taken to reduce emissions of this menace and steps to be taken by the residents to stay healthy in Port Harcourt and its environs.

Abstract:
Several diseases are associated with Epstein Barr virus (EBV) and they can be life threatening especially in immunocompromised individuals. Moreover, there is no well-established EBV prevention and control strategies in Nigeria. Therefore, this study was carried out to assess the prevalence of Epstein Barr Nuclear Antigen (EBNA) IgM antibody among university students in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. A hospital based cross-sectional survey was adopted to randomly analyze 91 students attending lectures in University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) was used to analyze EBNA IgM antibody in the samples obtained. Chi-square analysis was used to determine the association of the infection with socio-demographic factors. Of the 91 subjects, 3(3.2%) were seropositive for EBNA IgM antibody while 88(96.7%) were observed to be seronegative for EBNA IgM antibody. Sera EBNA IgM positivity was highest in age group 20-25 years (4.7%), single (3.2%), male (3.8%), students (3.9), sexually inactive (4.0%), oral sex (2.4%), non-Anal sex (3.4%), never using condoms (5.0%), dry kissing (11.1%), Non-smokers (4.0%), no history of blood transfusion (3.3%), no history of tissue transplant (3.2%), no history of surgery (3.2%). This study confirms the presence of Epstein Barr virus primary infection among university students in Port Harcourt, and an onward risk of Infectious mononucleosis. This comes with the responsibility of establishing surveillance programs for detection, treatment and control of EBV in Port Harcourt and Nigeria at large.

Abstract:
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a chronic and progressive multisystem autoimmune disorder is chiefly mediated by immune complexes in which the body’s immune system produce antibody (mostly antinuclear antibody) against normal cells and organs leading to inflammatory injuries. Several studies on this disease have been done in different parts of the world but very little exist in Nigeria, particularly in Port Harcourt. The study aim to determine the prevalence of systemic lupus erythematosus in Child-bearing female patients between the age ranges of 15 – 45 years, attending University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Rivers State, Nigeria. Ethical approval was sought for and obtained from the Ethical committee of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. A total sample size of 207 was used. 5ml of blood samples were collected with 5ml syringe and needle into non-heparinized bottle from the antecubital fossa of recruited study group between 8am and 11am each day and was taken to the laboratory for analysis. De-fibrination method was used with the aid of centrifuge and microscope for detection of LE cell. Using an SLE latex reagent, the serum was analyzed for the presence of antinuclear antibody after centrifuging for 10mins. The SLE test kit used contained positive and negative controls to which the results were compared. Results gotten were all negative for the test group. This indicates a zero (0) prevalence level of systemic lupus erythematosus amongst child-bearing female patients attending the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.

Abstract:
In Nigeria, gender inequality significantly impacts women's knowledge and awareness of the transmission of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the proliferation of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). Early marriage, traditional beliefs, religion, and polygamy all contribute to gender inequality. This study explored the role of these and other sociocultural practices in the gender inequalities that increase vulnerability of contracting HIV/AIDS among women in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. The study employed a phenomenological design, collected data through a semistructured interview approach, which was managed using NVivo software. The purposive sample comprised 20 female students from a college in Port Harcourt. This study's key findings correlated with other studies highlighting the interconnectedness of sociocultural practices responsible for increasing HIV/AIDS among Port Harcourt women. Other underlying findings included women's lack of economic power to achieve personal needs, such as access to HIV treatment, and the lack of skills to negotiate safe sex, which contributed to increased HIV/AIDS among women. Recommendations for further research include programs for reduction of gender inequality related to this HIV/AIDS outbreak. The implications for social change included adequate government funding to help provide available and accessible health services to women, promote safe sex conduct and education among the most vulnerable (women), and reduce HIV transmission from mother to child.

Ihemere, Kelechukwu Uchechukwu. "A tri-generational study of language choice and language shift in Port Harcourt City Nigeria." Thesis, University of Newcastle Upon Tyne, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/240.

Full text
Abstract:
This study seeks to investigate and present a systematic and coherent synchronic account of the language choice patterns by Ikwerre-Nigerian Pidgin English bilinguals in Port Harcourt City, Nigeria. The Ikwerre people are a little known minority ethnic group whose social history and current linguistic behaviours have before now not been systematically explored. The research is undertaken by means of a variety of methods including ethnographic participant observation, paying particular attention to relevant features of the Ikwerre culture and social organisation. Moreover, information obtained from the anthropological approach is supplemented by data gathered through face-to-face language use in the form of oral interviews and questionnaires. The rationale in this case is to explore methodological issues in the field of language shift more generally - particularly, the harmonisation between self-reported data and ethnographic techniques. The areas covered in the thesis are: i. The extent and patterning of Ikwerre/Nigerian Pidgin English (NPE) bilingualism within the Ikwerre community. ii. The means by which people in this community utilise two different languages in their routine communicative interactions. iii. The social and attitudinal motivations for language choice at both the group (community) and individual level. Further, this study is unique in that it will explore ab initio which languages are preferred in interactions within and across three generations namely: grandparents, parents and children (hereafter referred to as the younger generation). It will utilise the concepts of social network and language attitudes analyses to account for the interrelationship between code-switching and language choice by individual speakers, and for the association of both to the wider socio-economic and macro-sociological peculiarities of this community. In addition, I plan to discover which social groups (older versus younger speakers and males versus females) are leading the change towards permanent language shift to monolingual NPE. Finally, based on the observations and findings from the study, I propose an account of the language choice patterns attested in my Port Harcourt Ikwerre community data that is based on establishing a broad typology which can be directly related to the bilingualism continuum. This framework should be equally applicable to similar bilingual settings around the world and the next phase in the research will be to test its efficacy in different communities, particularly in other non-western communities which, like Port Harcourt, have experienced rapid metropolitan growth as a result of radical socio-economic change in their recent history.

The inherited modernist principles of urban design and development policy have left Social exclusion in its wake. The cities founded during colonial times and there-after continue the legacy of colonial urban development. Within these formal networks of roads and infrastructure, there exist a dynamic relationship between the excluded and the included. An informal network permeates the system with an aim to constantly push against barriers and force their way further in amidst the included. At the bottom of this network exist the Waste pickers also known as scavengers. Perceived as the poorest of the poor and marginal to mainstream economy and society. The individualistic nature of their activities makes them vulnerable to exploitation, but with people migrating to the city everyday from rural areas,The job as a waste picker is where they start their climb up the social ladder. This thesis investigation explores the part played by these individual waste pickers in the collection of refuse and proposes a system that formalizes the informal, A system in which Instead of being a problem, waste pickers can be part of the solution to the seemingly intractable problem of collection and disposal of solid wastes in Nigeria.

Abstract:
Through five case-studies-three in Nigeria (Kano, Lagos and Port Harcourt) and two in South Africa (Durban and Johannesburg), the first aim of this thesis is to make clear the concept of urban violence: its definition does not include any violent events which appen in the cities (and which may be "imported": civil wars, rural protests). But violence "produced" by the cities, from riots to banditry. We need to bear in mind the national contexts of violence to understand the process of urbanisation in Nigeria -a latitudinarianism partly inherited from British liberals' indirect rule-and South Africa-the apartheid system. South of the Sahara, cities show patterns that are common to most developing countries: rural influx, rapid demographic growth without industrialization, informal settlements in the fringes of the cities, huge problems of public administration, duality between rich and poor areas. But African cities have specific patterns: migrants retain strong links with the countryside, there is little or no urban rural dichotomy. Regional factors of violence (Durban and Port Harcourt) may be more important than the urban one (Kano, Lagos and Johannesburg)> a second aim of this thesis is to study the effects of violence on urban control: planning, security forces, justice and social prevention for the state: self-defense, private polices, vigilantes, sorcery, lynches, "bunker's psychosis", creation of "no-areas" and refugees' movements as reflected on the property market from citizens. The violent city loses its social function of modernism and cosmopolitism and turns into a ghetto

Dan-Jumbo, Nimi Gibson. "Assessing the effects of urban development and climate change on flooding in the Greater Port-Harcourt watershed, Niger Delta, Nigeria." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/28960.

Full text
Abstract:
Developing countries have been rapidly urbanising over the last decades, resulting in major environmental pressures and increased vulnerability to natural disasters. A complex combination of factors, including climate change, land use change, poorly implemented regulation and a lack of integrated planning has often resulted in environmental degradation and disproportionate impacts of natural disasters affecting millions worldwide, particularly in tropical cities. The main aim of this study is to understand the effects of land-use and climate change on flooding in the Greater Port-Harcourt watershed. The specific research objectives were: to understand the historical and future land use /land cover changes; to understand the magnitude of change in hydrologic and hydraulic conditions due to land-use and climate changes; to assess the influence of different forest mitigation scenarios on peak-discharge; and to make recommendations on how to improve future planning using insights from this study. Methodologically, the post-classification change detection method was applied to examine the extent and nature of historical LULC changes using remotely sensed data. Future LULC changes were estimated by superimposing the 2060 digitised Masterplan map on the year 2003 baseline imagery. Hydrologic changes were assessed using HEC-HMS model, while changes in the hydraulic condition were assessed using HEC-RAS model. Model output was further used to map flood hazards, flood zones and damage potential. Priority areas and infrastructure at risk were identified by means of their location in flood zones and exposure to floods with high damage potential. On the extent of change, this study revealed that urbanisation and loss of agricultural land had been the dominant and intensive land use change in the watershed. Urbanisation is projected to almost double its 2003 extent by 2060 and is likely to remain the dominant force of land use change. On the nature of change, this study found that urban land was the most dynamic in terms of gross gain and net change. It exhibited the grossest gain (about 9% of the watershed) and the grossest loss leading to a high net change of about 8.6%. In fact, the most prominent transition was the conversion of agricultural land (about 422km2) to urban land, and roughly 93.3% of all conversions to urban land resulted from agricultural land. On the process of change, urban land mainly experienced a net-type of change (change in quantity), whereas changes in agricultural land was more of a swap-type of change (change in location). Importantly, the study reveals that the impact on flood flow was historically significant (about 68%) and is projected to amplify in future, however, these changes are largely attributed to increased storm size. Urbanisation is likely to have little or no impact on annual maximum peak flow at the watershed scale; however, urbanisation is projected to have a considerable impact on peak flow in a number of subbasins, which could have severe implications for flash flooding in those subbasins. Similarly, afforestation could have little or no impact on future maximum peak flow when assessed at the watershed scale. Although some subbasins experienced changes in peak flow, the effect of forest is variable. The study concludes that although the impact of urbanisation is projected to be insignificant at the watershed scale, it could also increase flood risk due to increasing developments in floodplains and channel encroachment. Priority infrastructure and areas requiring urgent flood risk management include the Port-Harcourt seaports, Onne seaport, the University of Science and Technology and cement factory. Priority areas in the Masterplan are mainly in the south (Phase 3), comprising of the Air force base and the residential area near Onne seaport. Lastly, approximately 8.1km and 189m of road and rail network are at greater risk of flooding by means of their exposure to floods with the highest damage potential. Based on this study, I have furthered understanding by showing that the transition to urban land category was dominated by net changes (i.e. changes in quantity). I have also furthered understanding by showing that substantial changes in future urban land-use may not have significant effect on flood parameters. My main contribution to knowledge is that despite the high rate of urbanisation in the GPH watershed and its minimal impact on flooding (which could be due the large size of the storm and watershed), urbanisation could still increase flood risk due to greater exposure of elements at risk in the flood plains to damaging floods. Based on the results, the study recommends that the development authorities should integrate both structural measures (mainly for flood defence around existing developments) and non-structural measures (primarily for future developments). For flood risk management research, this study recommends that conclusions about the effects of urbanisation should not be made solely on the basis of changes in hydrology and river hydraulics, however researchers should also consider the exposure of important elements at risk within the floodplains under study to better understand the effects of urbanisation. Moreover, to better understand urbanisation effects on runoff dynamics in other watersheds, this study recommends that research efforts should be concerted in understanding subbasin-scale changes given that the effects of urbanisation are more pronounced in smaller basins.

Nwuche, Christine Adaobi. "The relevance of technology in the organisation of work in a third world workplace : a case study of the Port Harcourt refinery, Nigeria." Thesis, Brunel University, 1993. http://bura.brunel.ac.uk/handle/2438/5314.

Full text
Abstract:
The organisation of work is seen here as concerning the ways in which various elements in work such as skills, tasks and structures of relationship are planned and managed. The technological artefact used in work is recognized as a relevant resource in the work organisation phenomenon. This is particularly so in a developing country like Nigeria where technology is looked upon as a harbinger of modernization along western lines. Hence, the study rejects the relegation of technology and the corresponding elevation of social factors to a determinist height by Gallie, Bijker and Pinch, and others. It agrees that technology is a social construct but argues that when a technological artefact becomes existent, it is capable of influencing its environment. Its construction or design would have been unnecessary if this was not the case. On the other hand, deviating from Ellul and post - industrial society theorists generally, the study argues that technological relevance does not mean its determinacy. It recognizes that it would be wrong to discount the social origins of technology as well as the import of social choice. Therefore, the study draws on the interactive model posited by Hughes, Law, Latour and others which rejects any form of determinism, whether 'social' or 'technological'. However, unlike some proponents of the model (for example, Latour) the study presumes the possibility of assessing the influence of these 'actants'. Hence, it sees a crude oil refining plant as distinctly able to turn out refined petroleum products, not textiles; and able to influence certain aspects of work organisation. Overall, the study is congruent with the interactive model in arguing that the social and the technological are in %alliance', neither being the sole determinant of the way work is organised. This remains the order of things even in *developing' Nigeria where imported technology is yearned for and revered.

Mac-Ikemenjima, Dabesaki. ""Becoming somebody in the future" : exploring undergraduate students' self-articulated goals to develop a measure of students' quality of life in Port Harcourt, Nigeria." Thesis, University of East Anglia, 2015. https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/56895/.

Full text
Abstract:
Quality of life (QoL) measures are useful in international development as they can be used to generate locally grounded and individualised understandings of people’s lives in contexts of social, economic and political uncertainty. Although the last decade has witnessed growth in research on urban youth goals and experiences in sub-Saharan Africa, studies which measure their QoL are surprisingly few despite suggestions from research in psychology that goal achievement contributes to QoL. This thesis develops a contextually grounded measure of urban undergraduate students’ QoL, defined as the gap between important goals and satisfaction with achievement, in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. It draws on goals, satisfaction and weighted QoL (based on subtracting goal satisfaction from importance), which are operationalised using a goals-satisfaction framework. The study uses a mixed methods design with data collected through interviews, focus group discussions and a students’ QoL scale (SQOLS) instrument which taps into goals and satisfaction. The data was analysed using a partial grounded theory approach, and descriptive and inferential statistics. The goals identified through the qualitative analysis were developed into four categories: becoming somebody, making it in life, having valuable relationships and having a voice. When operationalised as items, the goals were endorsed as important, while satisfaction with their achievement was lower. Principal components analysis found a three factor structure for goals. This factor structure had good fit in confirmatory factor analysis using both goals and QoL items. The QoL measure correlated negatively with a measure of life satisfaction, indicating that it captures the extent to which students’ lives fall short of their desired states. The findings of the study suggest that items generated through qualitative work with educated urban youth can be used to develop a valid measure of their QoL while at the same time providing contextually grounded understandings of their lives.

Abstract:
AbstractPort Harcourt, Nigeria, as with many cities in Africa, is already experiencing impacts from climate change while also facing development challenges and compounding vulnerabilities. There is often a gap between the adaptation recommendations of academia and international organizations and the conditions needed to achieve these recommendations given the realities on the ground in cities with vulnerable populations, pressing challenges, and minimal capacity. This gap can make it difficult to translate theoretically persuasive plans and guidance into practically sustainable actions. This chapter builds on the experience of CMAP, a Port Harcourt-based NGO leading participatory mapping, community media, and public space design programs in the city’s informal waterfront settlements. Drawing on the perspectives of Chicoco Collective, the youth-led volunteer network which CMAP supports, and the datasets that they have built, the chapter explores local awareness and skills for climate change adaptation. This chapter concludes with recommendations relevant for Port Harcourt and similar African cities to build on such local skills and experiences and advocates for a partnership-based approach that brings together adaptation professionals and community-based actors for more effective critical analysis of local conditions and prioritization of actions to meet the development and climate change needs of local communities.

Abstract:
AbstractIn the era of smart cities, the digital twin of a settlement system allows not only the real-time control of the quality levers offers by the subsystems, but also the prediction of the future performance over the life cycle. This is feasible through the implementation of predictive models and the simulation of the impact that the design solutions can generate. The Digital and Sustainable Harbour 2030 (DSH2030) project, funded under the Liguria region’s POR FESR, sees the cooperation of the Innovation, Development, and Sustainability structure of the Porto Antico of Genoa, with ETT S.p.A. supported by the Department of Architecture of Naples, Netalia S.r.l., BF Partners S.r.l., Colouree S.r.l., AiTrust S.r.l., Circle Garage S.r.l., and the University of Genoa in the MaLGA structure. In particular, the research question expressed by the local authority of the Porto Antico of Genoa concerns the measurement and evaluation of environmental parameters, in relation to the consumption and production of renewable energy; monitoring of the flow of people and vehicles (land and sea) for both security and commercial purposes; the control of safety performances and usability of the built system. A complex virtual model is the answer to which the partnership is working on. The paper illustrates the criteria and principles that inform the design, testing, and validation of an enhanced digital twin for the tourist port of Genoa. Specifically, it discusses the work carried out by ETT S.p.A. with the Department of Architecture of Naples that, through the integration of sensors, measurement technologies, Internet of Things (IoT), machine learning technologies, intends to prefigure new models of sustainable management and maintenance of the port area.

Abstract:
AbstractThe new generation of water-free cooling reactors: the FuSTAR system (Fluoride-Salt-cooled high-Temperature Advanced Reactor), mainly proposed by Xi’an Jiaotong University, is at the design stage. So far, the overall parameters of the heat transport system of FuSTAR have been obtained, and there is a pressing need to design and optimize the mass flow distribution device of Downcomer. In this paper, to obtain the specific parameters of structure matching the design values of mass flow rate, the finite element analysis was adopted, combined with the Nelder-Mead algorithm in the nonlinear programming. The results show that the mass flow distribution device with a multiple-port plate structure can achieve the purpose of the values of mass flow rate. Moreover, the mass flow rate is not so sensitive to the geometric parameters of these structures, which means more engineering margin. Based on this research, the detailed structural parameters and physical information about the distribution device were obtained, and the data from numerical tests can be used to build the proxy models to speed up transient analysis programs of FuSTAR.

Abstract:
Purpose- The purpose of this paper was to review related literature on community service initiatives, benefits and the involvement of librarians in Community service programme with a focus on the University of Port Harcourt Community Service programme. This review was also undertaken to establish a link between the Community Service programme and purposeful librarianship. Methodology- Related literature was reviewed on involvement of academic librarians in community service programmes/initiatives in Universities with a focus on University of Port Harcourt community service programme. Findings- Community service programmes and initiatives play an essential role in linking students with host communities and provide the opportunities and prospects for the development of entrepreneurial skills. This paper highlighted the benefits of community service activities to all the stakeholders. It also exposed the problem of little or non-involvement of librarians in community service initiatives. This problem is more pronounced in Nigeria where librarians of all categories are not involved. Originality-This is a baseline review as no such paper has been written on this topic. Thus, it provides the basic information needed for further studies in this area.

Full text
Abstract:
A short but productive cruise aboard RV William Kennedy tested various new field equipment near Halifax (port of departure and return) but also in areas that could also benefit science understanding. The GSC-A Gavia Autonomous Underwater Vehicle equipped with bathymetric, sidescan and sub-bottom profiler was successfully deployed for the first time on Scotian Shelf science targets. It surveyed three small areas: two across known benthic sponge, Vazella (Russian Hat) within a DFO-directed trawling closure area on the SE flank of Sambro Bank, bordering Emerald Basin, and one across known pockmarks, eroded cone-shaped depression in soft mud due to fluid efflux. The sponge study sites (~ 150 170 m water depth) were known to lie in an area of till (subglacial diamict) exposure at the seabed. The AUV data identified gravel and cobble-rich seabed, registering individual clasts at 35 cm gridded resolution. A subtle variation in seabed texture is recognized in sidescan images, from cobble-rich on ridge crests and flanks, to limited mud-rich sediment in intervening troughs. Correlation between seabed topography and texture with the (previously collected) Vazella distribution along two transects is not straightforward. However there may be a preference for the sponge in the depressions, some of which have a thin but possibly ephemeral sediment cover. Both sponge study sites depict a hereto unknown morphology, carved in glacial deposits, consisting of a series of discontinuous ridges interpreted to be generated by erosion in multiple, continuous, meandering and cross-cutting channels. The morphology is identical to glacial Nye, or mp;lt;"N-mp;lt;"channels, cut by sub-glacial meltwater. However their scale (10 to 100 times mp;lt;"typicalmp;gt;" N-channels) and the unique eroded medium, (till rather than bedrock), presents a rare or unknown size and medium and suggests a continuum in sub-glacial meltwater channels between much larger tunnel valleys, common to the eastward, and the bedrock forms. A comparison is made with coastal Nova Scotia forms in bedrock. The Emerald Basin AUV site, targeting pockmarks was in ~260 to 270 m water depth and imaged eight large and one small pockmark. The main aim was to investigate possible recent or continuous fluid flux activity in light of ocean acidification or greenhouse gas contribution; most accounts to date suggested inactivity. While a lack of common attributes marking activity is confirmed, creep or rotational flank failure is recognized, as is a depletion of buried diffuse methane immediately below the seabed features. Discovery of a second, buried, pockmark horizon, with smaller but more numerous erosive cones and no spatial correlation to the buried diffuse gas or the seabed pockmarks, indicates a paleo-event of fluid or gas efflux; general timing and possible mechanisms are suggested. The basinal survey also registered numerous otter board trawl marks cutting the surficial mud from past fishing activity. The AUV data present a unique dataset for follow-up quantification of the disturbance. Recent realization that this may play a significant role in ocean acidification on a global scale can benefit from such disturbance quantification. The new pole-mounted sub-bottom profiler collected high quality data, enabling correlation of recently recognized till ridges exposed at the seabed as they become buried across the flank and base of the basin. These, along with the Nye channels, will help reconstruct glacial behavior and flow patterns which to date are only vaguely documented. Several cores provide the potential for stratigraphic dating of key horizons and will augment Holocene environmental history investigations by a Dalhousie University student. In summary, several unique features have been identified, providing sufficient field data for further compilation, analysis and follow-up publications.
