Abstract:
This paper examines chat abbreviation and slangs of the University of Port Harcourt students. The qualitative research design was used in analyzing the data collected using the descriptive content analysis. The sampling technique adopted in this paper is the purposive sampling technique and source of data for this paper is primarily observations from students of University of Port Harcourt online platforms and social media used by students and interview. The findings of this paper reveal that students of the University of Port Harcourt use single letters, digits and a combination of both to replace words while some of the words are shortened, contracted and clipped. The paper also establishes that the students abbreviate words in order to minimize cost, save time and add style to their writing. The paper further establishes that chat abbreviation and slangs of the University of Port Harcourt students do not follow the rules of grammar of English language since they are composed haphazardly. It was observed that students of University of Port Harcourt do not use their punctuation marks properly in their formal writings. This paper also reveals that chat abbreviations and slangs have affected the proper usage of English language by some of the students of the University of Port Harcourt. This paper recommends that students should become more conscious of the dangers of chat abbreviation in their academics and identify as well as appreciate the appropriate setting in which to use them.

Abstract:
The study examined the effects of Ponzi schemes on students of University of Port Harcourt. Five research questions were formulated to guide the study. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised 37,628 students of the University of Port Harcourt. The sample size is 396 obtained from applying Taro Yamene’s sample size selection technique. The instrument used for data collection was questionnaire titled Effects of Ponzi Schemes on students Questionnaire (EPSSQ). The reliability of the instrument was determined using test re-test method. Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used for analysis which gave a reliability coefficient of 0.81. Mean (x ̅) statistical tool was used to answer the research questions. At the end of the analysis, it was found that some University of Port Harcourt students who participated in Ponzi Schemes were so negatively affected that they could not only pay their accommodation and tuition fees promptly but also could not progress to next levels. Some became so depressed and took ill, while some others dropped out of school. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others that the government agencies such as the police, EFCC (Economic and Finance Crimes Commission) etc should be proactive; the policy of “no fee, no exam” initiated and implemented in University of Port Harcourt should be reviewed; guidance counselors should be made to counsel students periodically.

Abstract:
A short-term study was carried out to comparatively evaluate the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPHs) in soot evading Port Harcourt and its environs. Samples were collected from three (3) different locations namely; Eleme Petrochemicals, Rumuodomaya Town, and University of Port Harcourt (Uniport) to determine the level of residual polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and total petroleum hydrocarbons in soot as dispersed from source to the troposphere. The evaluation was carried out using Gas Chromatography Flame Ionization Detector (GC-FID) and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer (GC-MS). Soot particles collected from the various locations were trapped in a tenax Gas Chromatography adsorbent tube for Gas chromatography analysis. The total petroleum hydrocarbons were analyzed according to ASTMD 3911. The result of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons obtained from Eleme Petrochemicals (0.04 mg/m 3 ), Rumuodomaya Town (0.02 mg/m 3 ), and University of Port Harcourt (0.01 mg/m 3 ) were below the permissible limit of World Health Organization (W.H.O.) standard for work place of 0.2 mg/m 3 . This indicates that areas under study were free from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons pollution. However, the values of total petroleum hydrocarbons which has no regulatory limit for soot showed high values of 21.44 mg/m 3 (Eleme Petrochemicals), 18.91 mg/m 3 (Rumuodomaya Town), and 12.68 mg/m 3 (University of Port Harcourt). This suggests that the weight of total petroleum hydrocarbons inhaled by humans and deposited on the body were unsafe. This study recommends safety measures to be taken to reduce emissions of this menace and steps to be taken by the residents to stay healthy in Port Harcourt and its environs.

Abstract:
Several diseases are associated with Epstein Barr virus (EBV) and they can be life threatening especially in immunocompromised individuals. Moreover, there is no well-established EBV prevention and control strategies in Nigeria. Therefore, this study was carried out to assess the prevalence of Epstein Barr Nuclear Antigen (EBNA) IgM antibody among university students in Port Harcourt, Nigeria. A hospital based cross-sectional survey was adopted to randomly analyze 91 students attending lectures in University of Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) was used to analyze EBNA IgM antibody in the samples obtained. Chi-square analysis was used to determine the association of the infection with socio-demographic factors. Of the 91 subjects, 3(3.2%) were seropositive for EBNA IgM antibody while 88(96.7%) were observed to be seronegative for EBNA IgM antibody. Sera EBNA IgM positivity was highest in age group 20-25 years (4.7%), single (3.2%), male (3.8%), students (3.9), sexually inactive (4.0%), oral sex (2.4%), non-Anal sex (3.4%), never using condoms (5.0%), dry kissing (11.1%), Non-smokers (4.0%), no history of blood transfusion (3.3%), no history of tissue transplant (3.2%), no history of surgery (3.2%). This study confirms the presence of Epstein Barr virus primary infection among university students in Port Harcourt, and an onward risk of Infectious mononucleosis. This comes with the responsibility of establishing surveillance programs for detection, treatment and control of EBV in Port Harcourt and Nigeria at large.

Abstract:
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), a chronic and progressive multisystem autoimmune disorder is chiefly mediated by immune complexes in which the body’s immune system produce antibody (mostly antinuclear antibody) against normal cells and organs leading to inflammatory injuries. Several studies on this disease have been done in different parts of the world but very little exist in Nigeria, particularly in Port Harcourt. The study aim to determine the prevalence of systemic lupus erythematosus in Child-bearing female patients between the age ranges of 15 – 45 years, attending University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Rivers State, Nigeria. Ethical approval was sought for and obtained from the Ethical committee of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. A total sample size of 207 was used. 5ml of blood samples were collected with 5ml syringe and needle into non-heparinized bottle from the antecubital fossa of recruited study group between 8am and 11am each day and was taken to the laboratory for analysis. De-fibrination method was used with the aid of centrifuge and microscope for detection of LE cell. Using an SLE latex reagent, the serum was analyzed for the presence of antinuclear antibody after centrifuging for 10mins. The SLE test kit used contained positive and negative controls to which the results were compared. Results gotten were all negative for the test group. This indicates a zero (0) prevalence level of systemic lupus erythematosus amongst child-bearing female patients attending the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital.

Abstract:
The causative agent of a mysterious pneumonia was identified as clustered of unexplained pneumonia, was identified as a novel coronavirus in Wuhan, China and was named coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) by the World Health Organization. There are thousands of infectious individuals worldwide and millions of deaths. A total number of 248 subjects (124 males and 124 females) of returning students of some Faculties of University of Port Harcourt were used. Questionnaire were used to collect some demographic data from the subjects while Standard Q COVID-19 Antigen Test Kit methods were applied for the screening. The subjects that gave consent were made to sit down comfortably with their head tilted back and nasal samples collected with COVID-19 swab stick. The swab was inserted into an extraction buffer tube and squeezed at the sides to extract the liquid. 4 drops of the extracted specimen were applied to the well of the Standard Q COVID-19 Antigen Test Kit. The result was read in 20 minutes and was recorded. All the results of the study read negative. This showed zero prevalence of COVID-19 disease amongst the returning students of University of Port Harcourt. This could be as a result of age, environmental factor or strong COVID-19 preventive measures within the campus. Nevertheless, continuous observance of COVID-19 preventive protocols, further COVID-19 screening tests amongst the staff and in a hospital, setting is strongly recommended.

Abstract:
Dengue fever has grown to be a significant public health issue. By testing HIV-infected patients for IgM antibodies to the dengue virus, the study sought to determine its serological evidence in Port Harcourt Nigeria. Infected patients with HIV who were seen at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital (UPTH), Port Harcourt, Nigeria, were the subject of this cross-sectional study. A total of 94 HIV-positive patients were enlisted, and after gaining consent, approximately 5 ml of whole blood was taken. Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay was used to detect the presence of IgM antibodies to the dengue fever virus (ELISA). IgM antibodies prevalence to the dengue fever virus was found to be 35.1%. Females (43.6%) had a higher prevalence. Age- wise, the group of those under 25 showed a higher prevalence (46.7%). Single people (37.9%), people with tertiary degrees (52.9%), those without jobs (42.9%), and people who live in cities (37.8%) all had higher incidence rates. Several sociodemographic characteristics and dengue fever did not differ significantly (p > 0.05), although sex (p = 0.04), employment (p = 0.02), and place of residence (p = 0.001) were statistically linked to the prevalence of dengue IgM. This study found significant serological evidence of IgM antibodies to the dengue virus, indicating that HIV-infected patients in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, were carriers of this virus. Further research on this virus is required to build on the relationship between age, marital status, education, and most importantly, the seasonal variation of the virus in terms of infection rates.

Abstract:
Aim: Respiratory diseases are common causes of childhood morbidity and mortality worldwide. Variations in the pattern of respiratory diseases exist globally, due to environmental conditions, poverty, hygiene and so on. This study sought to determine the pattern of respiratory diseases among children admitted into the emergency ward of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. Study Design: Retrospective cross-sectional study. Setting and Duration of Study: Children Emergency Ward of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, between January 2019 and January 2021. Methodology: This was a retrospective cross-sectional study. Data were collected from case notes of 3,851 children, aged two months to 18 years, admitted to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, over three years. Results: Respiratory diseases accounted for 500 (13%) of the total admissions, and was more common among males than females (M: F = 1.3:1). The mean age of children with respiratory illnesses was 2.27±4.6 years. Infectious causes {443 (88.6%)} were significantly higher than non-infectious causes {57 (11.4%)}, p<0.001. Bronchopneumonia, bronchial asthma and bronchiolitis were the commonest morbidities seen, accounting for 394 (78.8%), 34 (6.8%) and 22 (4.4%) of cases respectively. Conclusion: The prevalence of respiratory diseases is high. Infectious causes are still prevalent with cases presenting more during the dry season. Measures to reduce environmental pollution and enhance immunization can greatly reduce respiratory diseases among children.

Abstract:
Trichomonas vaginalis is one of the most common curable sexually transmitted disease. Untreated Trichomoniasis in women can cause cervicitis, vaginites and pelvic inflammatory disease. Trichomonas vaginalisis contributes to high risk of cervical cancer in women and HIV in men. This is an institutional based cross- sectional descriptive study conducted among two hundred (200) female students of Delta Hostels, University of Port Harcourt. High vaginal swabs (HVS) and urine samples were collected from consented students and examined for the presence of T. vaginalis under the microscope. A total of 32(16%) were infected and results obtained from HVS showed a prevalence of 32% compared to urine microscopy which no positive sample was detected. Students between the age group 15-25yrs had the highest prevalence of infection 31(17.2%) while the age group 26-35 years had 1(5%). However, the difference was statistically significant. Based on marital status all were single and had 32(16%) prevalence. This study observed a high prevalence of T. Vaginalis and its symptoms among the study population. The study also noted that high vaginal swab microscopy showed better detection sensitivity compared to urine microscopy. The best option for prevention and control is to educate students on personal hygiene and safe sex practice.

Abstract:
The study investigated personality traits as predictors of burnout syndrome among nurses in the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital Rivers State. The study used the correlational research design. The population of the study comprised of all 750 nurses in the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. A sample of 300 nurses from Paediatrics Ward, Male Ward, Female Ward and Intensive Care Unit (ICU), were randomly selected using the simple random sampling technique (balloting). Two instruments titled; Maslach Burnout Scale (MBS) by Maslach (1996) and Personality Inventory (NEO) by Costa and McCrae (1992) were used to collect data for the study. The Cronbach Alpha reliability was used to establish the internal consistency reliability coefficients of 0.87 and 0.81respectively. Responses to the research questions were analyzed with mean and standard deviation, while the hypotheses will be tested with multiple regression associated with independent sample t-test statistics. The findings of the study revealed that personality traits (neuroticism, extraversion, openness to experience) jointly predict burnout syndrome among nurses in University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital. Further analysis of the result showed that when personality traits of neuroticism, extraversion, openness to experience where looked at independently, only neuroticism and extraversion relate significantly predict burnout syndrome while openness to experience did not. Based on the findings of the study it was recommended among others that counsellors, psychologists and others in the helping profession should readily offer practical assistance to nurses experiencing burnout to enable them cope with the stressful experience they encounter in their daily work assignments.

Abstract:
A cross-sectional investigation of hepatitis-B status among attendees of Modern Primary Health Centre, Eneka and Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, Port Harcourt was evaluated. Seven hundred (700) subjects of different ages of both sexes were included in the study after ethical approval was obtained from the Rivers State Ministry of Health, Port Harcourt. Consent forms were issued to get subjects’ consent before questionnaire administration to obtain their demographic data. The uninfected subjects were used as control. About 4mls of blood was taken from each subject by vein-puncture; 2mls each was dispensed into EDTA and plain bottles for analysis. The samples were used to assay for hepatitis-B surface antigen (HBsAg), hepatitis–B virus (HBV) markers (HBsAb, HBeAg, HBeAb, HBcAb) using standard techniques. The overall prevalence of HBV was 5.1% in Port Harcourt. The males had higher prevalence of 7.9% HBV than the females 3.4% HBV, although there was no statistically significant difference (P ≥0.05). The HBV was highest among subjects of age group 24-29 years (8.29%) and 30-35 years (9.2%) accordingly. The HBV markers results show that while HBsAg occurred among all the subjects that were positive for HBV, HBeAb was completely absent.

Abstract:
Mobile subscribers’ satisfaction constitute a critical success factor among competitors in the telecommunication industry. The dynamics of this phenomenon in the University of Port Harcourt has given rise to an ambivalence of subscribers’ milieu of choices; with them acquiring multiple simcards on one hand, and choosing a single simcard on the other. Either way, their quest for satisfaction appear to be a wild-goose chase. Consequently, this paper examined the determinants of mobile subscribers’ satisfaction vis-à-vis the University of Port Harcourt. Based on a common parlance definition of these determinants, derived through descriptive research, six variables were identified and tested as dependent variables of mobile subscribers’ satisfaction. For the purpose of this study, a sample size of two-hundred (200) respondents was selected from Choba and Abuja campuses of the University of Port Harcourt through random sampling technique, and data were obtained using a Structured Likert Scale questionnaire where respondents tick (√) either in negation or affirmation of the item. The results revealed four of the variables as having a positive correlation with mobile subscribers’ satisfaction while two recorded a negative correlation. An outcome which gives credence to ‘prompt and affordable connectivity’; ‘24 hours affordable internet connectivity’; worldwide connectivity spectrum’ and ‘proliferation of freebies outlets’ as determinants of ‘mobile subscribers satisfaction’. At the same time, the study makes a mute point of the often touted allusions of an existing nexus between mobile subscribers satisfaction and a telecommunication service provider’s ‘toasted brand name-cum-indigenous outfit patronization syndrome’ .In the main, the work constitutes an added voice to the call for a pro-active regulatory body that would irrespective of the service provider a subscriber patronizes be able to ensure that mobile subscribers are always provided with an equally affordable, hitch-free connectivity that smacks of uniformity of service.

Abstract:
Purpose. With many preterm babies now surviving as a result of improvement in neonatal care in Nigeria, the incidence of visual impairment/blindness as a result of retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) may rise. We describe our findings after screening starts for the first time in a 15-year-old special care baby unit so as to establish the incidence and risk factors for developing ROP. Methods. A prospective study carried out at the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) and Pediatric Outpatient Clinics of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital between January 1 and October 31, 2012. Fifty-three preterm babies (of 550 neonates admitted within the study period) delivered before 32 completed weeks and weighing less than 1500 g were included in the study following informed consent and the main outcome measure was the development of any stage of ROP. Results. Mean gestational age at birth was 28.98±1.38 weeks. Mean birth weight was 1411±128 g. Out of 550 babies admitted at SCBU, 87 of 100 preterms survived with 53 included in study. Twenty-five (47.2%) had different degrees of ROP with prevalence found to be 47.2%. Prevalence was higher (75%) in babies weighing <1300 g and those delivered before 30-week gestation (58%). Twenty-one (84%) had stage 1 no plus disease and 3 (12%) had stage 2 no plus disease. Only 1 (4%) had threshold disease in Zone 1. None had disease at stage 4 or 5 or AP-ROP. Receiving supplemental oxygen (χ2=6.17; P=0.01), presence of sepsis (χ2=7.47; P=0.006), multiple blood transfusions (χ2=5.11; P=0.02), and delivery by caesarian section (χ2=4.22; P=0.04) were significantly associated with development of ROP. There were no significant differences with gender, apneic spells, jaundice, or phototherapy. Conclusions and Relevance. All live infants with ROP were noted to regress spontaneously in this study. Though it may not be cost effective to acquire treatment facilities at the moment (the only child with treatable disease died), facilities for screening preterm infants displaying high risk features may be essential as smaller babies are saved.

Abstract:
Despite the fact that the World Health Organization (WHO) had provided an average global reference data of Coagulation Properties (CP) of blood in the world, available statistics still suggest a significant discrepancy in CPs of blood among various age groups, socioeconomic classes and races in different locations of the world. Here in Port Harcourt Nigeria, absence of such local reference data had continued to pose over-reliance on the WHO global standards without recourse to our distinctive geospatial and socioeconomic peculiarities. As a result, this study therefore investigated coagulation properties of blood in healthy university students in Port Harcourt. A total of 157 participants were recruited into the study using Stratified Random Sampling techniques. They were administered well-structured questionnaires for an on-the-spot data collections. Thereafter, 5ml of venous blood were aspirated for various coagulation properties (Bleeding, clotting and Prothrombin times and Platelets Counts) investigation. Clotting and bleeding times were measured instantly using capillary and Ivy’s methods respectively. Results from the study revealed a significant (ρ≤0.05) coagulation difference between the WHO standards and both gender (male, 311032 ± 17300* and female, 293600 ± 12800*) for platelets counts. In the age groups, only ≥40 group were significant to all CP (10.30 ± 0.00* for BT, 10.00 ± 1.30* for CT, 10.22 ± 2.88* for PT and 190320.73 ± 1886.45* for PC). Similar significant result was also noted for Obese Class 2, morbid obesity and protein diet groups as compared with the Control. This study therefore concluded that CP significantly vary with the WHO standards, age, gender, BMI and nutritional background and recommended similar study be conducted in other locations in Nigeria and Africa.

Abstract:
Non-obstetric vulva haematomas are uncommon, with an incidence of 3.7% accounting for less than 1% of gynaecologic emergencies. Non-consensual sexual intercourse constitutes the most common aetiology. A 15-year-old adolescent Nigerian girl, who presented to the Gynaecologic Emergency Unit of the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Port Harcourt, Nigeria, with vulva haematoma following sexual assault, is presented. She had surgical management, screening and prophylaxis for sexually transmitted infections, emergency contraception, and psychosocial therapy and was discharged after 24 hours, following an unremarkable postoperative period. This case is being reported to draw attention to the serious global public health problem of adolescent sexual abuse, highlight that though rare, vulva haematomas, which could be life-threatening, can be a complication of sexual assault, and review the literature on its management.

Abstract:
Objective: To assess the level of awareness and knowledge of orthodontics, as well as its implications, among medical and dental undergraduates at the University of Port Harcourt, Port Harcourt, Nigeria.Method: A self-administered questionnaire was distributed to 160 medical and dental students in their lecture rooms. The students were in different levels of study; ranging from first year to final year, i.e. both pre-clinical and clinical. The questionnaire examined their awareness and knowledge of orthodontics, as well as their past dental experiences, if any. It also included questions such as whether a medical doctor should refer patients with malocclusion to an orthodontist, and whether respondents would refer patients with malocclusions to an orthodontist. Statistical analyses were carried out with Epi-info version 7.0 on a personal laptop computer.Result: Only 147 (92%) questionnaires were properly completed and analyzed. Dental students were significantly more aware of orthodontics than their medical counterparts (p = 0.029). Over half of the students (53.7%) had never heard of the term 'malocclusion'. Majority (91.2%) of those who had heard of the term 'malocclusion' answered correctly that it refers to 'badly arranged teeth', while a quarter of them (25.5%) believed that malocclusion affects appearance alone. Conclusion: Generally, the knowledge of orthodontics as a specialty in dentistry, malocclusion and its impacts, as well as benefits from treatment is very poor among these undergraduates in the College of Health Sciences, University of Port Harcourt. There is a need to include an introductory course in orthodontics in the undergraduate medical curricula.
