Abstract:
Escalas. Abstract:
Since 2008, the Rhode Island (RI) Coastal Resources Management Council has been leading the development of an Ocean Special Area Management Plan (Ocean SAMP), in partnership with the University of Rhode Island, resulting in an extensive multidisciplinary analysis of the Rhode Island offshore environment and its suitability to site offshore wind farms. As part of SAMP, a comprehensive macro-siting optimization tool: the Wind Farm Siting Index (WIFSI), integrating technical, societal, and ecological constraints, was developed within the conceptual framework of ecosystem services. WIFSI uses multivariate statistical analyses (principal component and k-means cluster analyses) to define homogeneous regions, which integrate and balance ecological and societal constraints as part of a Cost/Benefit tool. More recently, a Wind Farm micro-Siting Optimization Tool was developed (WIFSO), which uses a genetic algorithm to derive the optimal layout of a wind farm sited within one of the macro-siting selected regions. In this work, we present an overview of the current state of development of the integrated macro- and micro- siting tools.

Abstract:
Abstract The University of Rhode Island Engaging Generations Cyber-Seniors Program was first implemented in the fall semester of 2015. URI students from 15+ majors have supported the digital competency of older adults in Rhode Island each semester and summer session since its inception. Gradually over time, we modified and expanded this in-person program to meet student, older adult, community partner, and faculty needs. The pandemic led to our program expanding exponentially due to new grant funding opportunities, new partnerships, and student interest. This presentation will address strengths and challenges of implementing this program state-wide in a small, mostly urban state with community partners, mostly involving senior centers. We will describe moving from in-person to phone/virtual and now to a hybrid model. Last, we will explain the program’s efforts to conduct formative and summative evaluation research to assess program output and examine outcomes for students and older adults in the program.

Abstract:
This article examines the use of one low-grade raw material, Narragansett Basin argillite, by prehistoric peoples in southeastern New England. Petrographic sections analyzed by Dr. Dan Murray (Geologist, University of Rhode Island) have provided a detailed account of the lithology of this material. Rock formation processes and lithic sources are also discussed. Artifact analysis has provided data pertaining to the prehistoric periods when Narragansett Basin argillite was most often used by prehistoric populations in Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts. An examination of tool manufacturing techniques has brought to light striking similarities between argillite and quartz Small Stemmed points further supporting the hypothesis of an in situ development of the Small Stemmed Point tradition in New England.

Abstract:
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture, 1988.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 117-122).
This is a study of the design competition for the new State House in Providence, Rhode Island, which began in 1890 and ended in 1892. The competition was supervised by the Rhode Island State House Commission, a body formed by the legislature and presided over by former Rhode Island Governor Herbert W. Ladd. The Commission was initiated in January 1890 and began meetings in May 1890. The competition ran in two parts. First local Rhode Island architects were invited to compete and then a group of nationally known architects were brought in to compete with three of the Rhode Island firms. The interest in this building and the competition which led to its construction lies in the style of the completed building and in who was selected to design it. McKim, Mead & White were the winners of the competition and they produced a design (and eventually a building) which is a monument to the then new trend in American classicism which became popularized through the vehicle of the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893 in Chicago. This building represents the ideals of the "City Beautiful", or "White City", movement which grew out of the influence of the Fair on the American Public. The study seeks to show how a small group of architects, which included McKim, Mead & White, had the correct social and professional connections to obtain such monumental projects as the Rhode Island State House. It is hoped that the story of the State House's competition will shed light on how the small elite which ruled American architecture in the 1890's was able to maintain their control.
by Hilary A. Abstract:
This paper describes preliminary investigations into how sonifications of scientific graphs are perceived by undergraduate students in an introductory course in oceanography at the University of Rhode Island. The goal is to gather data that can assist in gauging students’ levels of engagement with sonification as a component of science education. The results, while preliminary, show promise that sonified graphs improve understanding, especially when they are presented in combination with visual graphs.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The University of Rhode Island (URI) University Libraries publishes five active open access, peer-reviewed scholarly journals on our DigitalCommons@URI platform. Our journal publishing program has grown slowly but steadily over the last decade, with new services added incrementally as needed. In early 2019, we conducted three focus group interviews with nine editors and assistants representing all of the journals on our platform in order to assess our journal publishing efforts. We asked editors to identify the successes, challenges, and unmet needs that they have encountered in the publishing process and what resources they have found to support their journals outside of library offerings. We highlight what we learned from our editors: what they value, what they need, and what they want from library publishing services. We also outline our plans going forward to facilitate ongoing conversations among editors and to find creative solutions to help them with their biggest challenges.

Abstract:
Abstract This paper discusses a new approach to teaching a senior-level mechanical systems design course at the University of Rhode Island. The MCE401 class was split into 9 teams, each with four students. Team members were selected to complement their learning styles. To each team, additional 4 students from the URI Business school were added. In the Fall semester, each team selected one of several different, product-oriented design projects or proposed their own project topic subject to certain requirements. The students were asked to perform a patent search, to critique related products, to prepare a marketing study, to propose a design of this product, and to realize their design using a 3-D solid-modeling software. At the end of the Fall semester, groups competed for funding for activities in the following Spring term that included building prototypes of their design, formulating business plans for commercialization, and applying for patent protection. The new proposed format gave students better understanding and exposure to the entrepreneurial process of product design and innovation.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract The problem of designing an automatic system to hand posts from bulk, to position them precisely and to weld them on findings, such as earrings, has been effectively solved by employing expert system methodologies and graph theory techniques. Design requirements are represented in terms of desired degrees of freedom, desired type of motion, and the complexity of the mechanism in terms of the number of independent loops. The expert system DOMES, Design of Mechanisms by an Expert System, developed at the University of Rhode Island, is employed to identify several kinematic structures of mechanisms which fulfill all requirements. Present semi-automatic systems require an operator to handle and position findings and posts into a welding machine at rates of approximately sixty findings per minute. The developed system handles four hundred findings per minute. Results show that mechanism design techniques based on graph theory and expert systems are powerful tools for creative mechanism design. In this paper, emphasis is placed on the design of the mechanical system. However, the developed automatic earring-post assembly system includes several other features. A commercially available fusion welding machine is improved to attain rates of fourteen instead of three welds per second, a fifteen ton power press is integrated into the system and appropriate controls are designed and implemented together with light and acoustic sensors to synchronize the power press, the fusion welding equipment, and the post-handling equipment and to monitor system performance on a real-time basis.

Abstract:
Most Mechanical Engineering curricula include courses in system dynamics, controls, mechatronics, and vibrations. At most schools, these courses do not have a laboratory component. Even at schools that have such a component, laboratory access is often limited, and thus there is a need to increase students’ laboratory experience. This paper addresses the development and initial testing of instructional material in the form of take-home software and hardware kits that can be used to perform laboratory experiments and measurements at home to illustrate system dynamics concepts. Rather than having students perform an experiment in the university laboratory, the students are given a compact, low cost software and hardware kit with which they can perform an experiment at home using only their PC. The kits are designed so that the experiments can be conducted on a provided experimental setup such as a DC motor/tachometer system or can be used to perform dynamic measurements on engineering systems that are available at home such as motor powered devices and heating/cooling systems. The take-home kit consists of three components. The first component is a hardware interface board that is built around a PIC18F4550 microcontroller which interfaces with the student’s PC and with the experiment hardware. The second component is a Windows based user interface program that is loaded on the student’s PC and is used to run the experiment and collect data. The third component is the actual experimental setup or the sensor system to perform the measurement. Fifty five kits have been fabricated to perform five different experiments. Two of these experiments were tested in two courses in the mechanical engineering department at the University of Rhode Island. The paper discusses the design of the kit components, the details of the experiments, as well the initial experiences gained from using this new approach for laboratory experimentation.
