Abstract:
Swati Dhingra of London School of Economics and Political Science reviews, “Reforms and Economic Transformation in India” edited by Jagdish Bhagwati and Arvind Panagariya. The Econlit abstract of this book begins: “Nine papers explore economic policy reforms in India and consider why their impact has not been as significant as it has been in other reform-oriented economies. Papers discuss labor regulations and firm size distribution in Indian manufacturing; complementarity between formal and informal manufacturing in India—the role of policies and institutions; services growth in India—a look inside the black box; organized retailing in India—issues and outlook; selling the family silver to pay the grocer's bill?—the case of privatization in India; variety in, variety out—imported input and product scope expansion in India; reforms and the competitive environment; the postreform narrowing of inequality across castes—evidence from the states; and entrepreneurship in services and the socially disadvantaged in India. Bhagwati is University Professor of Economics and Law at Columbia University. Panagariya is Professor of Economics and Jagdish Bhagwati Professor of Indian Political Economy at Columbia University.”

Abstract:
In NTQ 14. Graham Holderness welcomed the Swan at Stratford as the home, at once new and old, of a ‘radical energy’ opposed to the ‘ossified establishment’ in the main house. Here Peter Womack, concentrating on John Caird's 1987 production of The New Inn, suggests a different and more suspicious interpretation of the building and its uses. By a sort of historical coincidence, the conservative nostalgia of Jonson's play reveals the close links between the Swan project and that distinctively 1980s construction of the national past – the heritage industry. Peter Womack, who lectures in English at the University of East Anglia, is the author of a book on Ben Jonson in the ‘Rereading Literature’ series. This article is based on a paper given to a conference on the politics of early seventeenth-century drama, Oxford, June 1988.

What is the role of political theory in a world of partisan politics? Various approaches to this long-standing problem are raised in this stimulating collection of essays. Arlene Saxonhouse begins the volume by usefully reminding us of Plato's metaphor of the ship in book 6 of the Republic, in which self-interested sailors fight over the boat's direction "while the one who knows how to guide the boat, who can read the stars, stands aft staring upward and is considered useless" (p. 19). Similarly in the Assembly, self-interested rhetoricians may sway the crowd, without any concern for the pursuit of truth.

Abstract:
Abstract Robert L. Smale’s work looks in detail at the origins of Bolivia’s labour movement in the tin mines of the early twentieth century. This provides a good starting point for an account of the rapid rise of Trotskyism in the period leading up to the national revolution of 1952, a phenomenon described in detail in S. Sándor John’s book. Sándor John’s work in particular is important in understanding both the strengths and limitations of the Trotskyist POR, which was not able to displace rival nationalist organisations to achieve political hegemony in the struggles of the second half of the twentieth century.

Abstract:
Seyyed Hossein Nasr (b. 1933) is one of the most important living mysticphilosopherstoday. His consistent and clairvoyant critique of the materialism, secularism, and anthropocentricism of modernity for the last fifty yearshas been a wake-up call to many across the religious divide. Thus it is onlyfitting that the teachings on environment of a thinker who saw well beforemost of us the signs of our ominous times, one who wrote against the futilityof technological fixes and the need to reject modern metaphysics, shouldbe the subject of a dedicated monograph. The present book by Tarik M.Quadir is based on his PhD dissertation, which aims to present Nasr’s contentionson the subject over his long and productive career in one coherentnarrative. Being “the first person ever to write extensively about the philosophicaland religious dimension of the crisis” (emphasis in the original),Nasr’s critiques and specific suggestions are scattered in various writingsand interviews. The book at hand seeks to be the go-to volume for “the response[to the ecological crisis] that he envisions for any human civilization”(pp. 4-6).Nasr, educated in the United States since the age of thirteen, attended MITand Harvard. Having taught in Iran, the United Kingdom, the United States, and elsewhere, he finally settled at the George Washington University. Arenowned scholar and author of nearly fifty books and many more articles, his teachings are a blend of Shi‘ism, Sufism, and, most of all, the perennialist,anti-modernist philosophy of René Guénon (1886-1951) and Frithjof Schuon(1907-98). Nasr’s response to the environmental cataclysm is derived fromhis perennialist philosophy and is based on the spiritual reality of nature andits relevance to human purpose as defined by religion, and not merely on thebasis of consideration for physical survival, which permeates nearly the entiretyof environmentalist activism today.Quadir reviews a swath of literature by various authors, including activists, scholars, and scientists, who warn of the end of our world as we knowit and the limits of growth. From scientific projections to confessions of failureby leading environmentalists, several alarming and alarmist books are addedto the list every month. Nasr argues that many mainstream environmentalistsrecognize that not only is business as usual (i.e., capitalist growth) unsustainable,...

Binion, Gayle. "At the Heart of Freedom: Feminism, Sex, and Equality. By Drucilla Cornell. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 1998. 254p. $14.95 paper." American Political Science Review 96, no. 1 (2002): 174. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s0003055402234310.

Full text
Abstract:
Drucilla Cornell has two goals: Pinpoint equal freedom as the core of sexual equality and make the case for the equal rights of gays and lesbians. Interwoven within these themes is a case for sexual freedom itself, for men and women. With erudite references to a wide multidisciplinary swath of literature, she succeeds in hammering home these concerns and in demanding that the sociolegal order reform its policies affecting sexuality, reproduction, and definitions of family. In these respects, this is a valuable study of how the United States specifically and other societies referentially fall short of what Christine Littleton calls making sex “cost free.” Cornell's book, which in the subjects and issues it analyzes covers very familiar territory, is intriguing for a very different reason. It is one of a very few works in radical feminist thought that is fundamentally about employing the tenets of classical liberalism, if not libertarianism, in the service of progressive social change. In contrast with the paradigms of modal feminism, which address social structures and connectedness, and which are concerned predominantly with equality, this work unabashedly focuses on the individual and stresses the freedom of each as a sexual being.

Meyrick, Julian. "The Limits of Theory: Academic versus Professional Understanding of Theatre Problems." New Theatre Quarterly 19, no. 3 (2003): 230–42. http://dx.doi.org/10.1017/s0266464x03000137.

Abstract:
The exponential growth of ‘theoretical’ approaches to theatre in the last twenty years has given rise to a vast body of literature and a swag of highly influential ‘command metaphors’. In this article, Julian Meyrick describes and analyzes the rise of such theories, contrasting academic understanding of theatre with the more experiential problem-solving of the profession. He argues that sophisticated ‘theoretical’ approaches to the theatre too often preclude or traduce the thinking of artists themselves, presenting practical concerns as epiphenomenal or untutored. This, in turn, points to important short-circuits in some academic takes on theatre which need modifying if ‘theory’ and ‘practice’ are once again to feed into each other in a meaningful way. Julian Meyrick Is currently an Associate Director and Literary Adviser at Melbourne Theatre Company, and an Honorary Associate with the Drama Program, La Trobe University. His production for the Melbourne Workers' Theatre, Who's Afraid of the Working Class? attracted numerous awards, and toured widely in Australia. He has published in the areas of arts policy, the theory/practice nexus, and post-1945 Australian theatre. His book on Sydney's Nimrod Theatre, See How It Runs: Nimrod and the New Wave was published by Currency Press in 2002.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (M. Tech. (Civil engineering)) - Central University of Technology, free State, 2013
Hydrological models have become vital tools for understanding hydrologic processes at the catchment level. In order to use model outputs for tasks ranging from regulation to research, models should be scientifically sound, robust, and tenable. Model evaluation is therefore beneficial in the acceptance of models to support scientific research and to guide policy, regulatory, and management decision-making. The objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of the SWAT model in simulating stream flow for the Modder River Basin. The study area is situated at -29° 11’ latitude and 26° 6’ longitude at an elevation of 1335 m and drains a land area of 949 km2. The land cover is mainly grassland (pasture) with other minor land use types. The climate of the area is semi-arid with Mean Annual Precipitation (MAP) of 563 mm. Two techniques that are widely used in evaluating models, namely quantitative statistics and graphical techniques, were applied to evaluate the performance of the SWAT model. Three quantitative statistics, namely Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE), percent bias (PBIAS), and ratio of the mean square error to the standard deviation of measured data (RSR), in addition to the graphical techniques, were identified to be used in model evaluation. Results of calibration and validation of the model at a monthly time step gave NSE of 0.65, Pbias of 15 and RSR of 0.4, while NSE of 0.5, Pbias of 31 and RSR of 0.5 were recorded for validation. According to monthly model performance ratings, the model performed well during calibration and performed satisfactory during the validation stage.

Evento aupiciado por la Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos (UNMSM) y la Universidad Peruana de Ciencias Aplicadas (UPC).
The rise of electronic publication is irrevocably altering the landscape of scholarly communication. Discussions of electronic modes of publication typically focus on new business models, open access, OAI protocols, and retaining the authority of the peer review process in a world increasingly relying on crowdsourcing. This presentation focuses on a less-discussed but very fundamental aspect of the epub revolution in scholarly communication: the evolution of codex-based monographs, and articles to the next form. We will survey how university libraries and presses are pushing the boundaries of traditional scholarly monographs and articles, giving us a sneak preview, perhaps, of what scholarly communication will look like in the “post book” era.

Abstract:
Pivot is a movement of radical ideas for the Caribbean of the future. In 2020, the IDB and its partners (Caribbean Climate Smart-Accelerator (CCSA), Destination Experience (DE), and Singularity University) launched The Pivot Movement and asked the people of the Caribbean to think of big ideas to transform the region. A small group came together at The Pivot Event to design 9 moonshots for electric vehicles, digital transformation and tourism. Pivot: The Future Makers is a comic book produced by the Pivot partners and illustrated by Caribbean artists. In it, the 9 moonshots have been developed into fictional stories as a simple and powerful means of conveying possible, probable futures, to help us visualize the Caribbean in 2040.
