An artists's approach to studio practice reflects knowledge acquired from a variety of source. Various methods are tried, modified, and re-interpreted, culmination in a studio practice that reflects one's own understanding of process and work ethic. This process is the work and the work practice concealed in the artwork, is rarely framed in verbal language. Martin Heidegger offers a particular philosophy of work practice that is clarified in words, allowing me to place my present understanding of studio practice within the notion of Greek techne. This essay is an explication of two works by the German philosopher Martin Heidegger, namely 'The Question Concerning Technology' and 'The origin of the Work of Art.' Heidegger's notion of authentic production and truth in art, provide a contextual framework within which I place my own understanding of studio practice and creative process. This method of work practice positions the artist as facilitator, co-dependent and co-responsible with the materials and form. The artist responds to the needs of the work allowing the materials and form to interact and ultimately reveal the work's true identity. Inherent in this work practice is the artist's knowledge, technical skill and commitment to process rather than outcome. This method of work practice is used in many cultures, from eastern calligraphy to western action painting, and has influenced contemporary artists too numerous to name individually. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the extent to which graduates from the Bachelor of Nursing (BN) program at the University of Technology, Sydney were adequately prepared for the nursing role in the current Australian health care system. This question was examined by adapting the illuminative evaluation method developed by Parlett and Hamilton (1977), and a meta-evaluation is provided of the model that was developed. Data were gathered from academic staff, clinical facilitators, curriculum and clinical experts and students. Course mileau and documentation were also assessed. The results indicate that graduates from the BN were adequately prepared to fulfil the nursing role. However, during the research a number of critical issues emerged which led to the development of an alternative model of curriculum. Although the conclusions support the continuance of a generic preparatory course, a number of changes to the course are recommended and two areas of future research identified. The first relates to exploring the depth, breadth and extent of knowledge that is required of a beginning registered nurse. The second involves evaluating the curriculum changes proposed here to assess whether this model is able to achieve improved outcomes in graduatesDoctor of Philosophy (PhD)

The object of this study was to answer four major research questions dealing with the intention of teachers to use information technologies: what are the teacher characteristics and dispositions that impact upon teacher intentions to use computers in teaching and learning; how do these characteristics and dThis study aimed to answer four research questions dealing with the intentions of teachers to use ispositions impact upon teacher intentions to use computers in teaching and learning; how do these characteristics and dispositions relate to each other; can the pattern of relationship between these characteristics and dispositions explain conceptually the processes by which teachers' uptake computers into teaching and learning situations. Teachers were sampled from seven secondary schools located in Western Sydney. Subjects were provided with a questionnaire pertaining to educational, professional and computing backgrounds, and attitudes toward computers. Results show teachers' use of computers to be influenced by attitudes toward computers as well as factors such as teachers' computer skill, their involvement in formal training, and their access to computers outside of school. Gender issues were examined and while some effect was found, the effect was not consistent across all variables. The results of the inferential analysis were used to formulate a causal model, the purpose of which was to explain further the relationship between teachers' attitudes toward computers and computer use

This work describes the concept of 'micro-agreement', representing the many forms of interaction occurring between parties involved in large and complex information technology projects. Micro-agreements can provide benefits as well as disadvantages to such projects and need to be effectively managed. This work begins by describing the nature of information technology projects from an engineering perspective, particularly in light of the problems that may occur. The existing legal doctrines that are relevant to such projects are then described and expanded into the concept of a micro-agreement. The concept of micro-agreement is supported through the analysis of a number of csae studies relevant to the information technology industry, together with further analysis of legal relationship models. A number of key recommendations are made which provide support for gaining maximum benefits from micro-agreements. These recommendations include: linking information technology contracts to software engineering best practice; using an appropriate legal relationship model; and developing an industry wide Information Technology Code of Conduct.

In this work, the author aims to trace some of the transformative effects of televisual technologies in contemporary post-industrial culture, and to critically assess their impact on the way knowledge is produced, and experience a sense of embodiment and social agency. The relation between humans and tools is questioned, and the hybridity of words such as technoculture and biotechnology is investigated, arguing that the separation of human and technology,and body and tool, at the level of both existence and knowledge is a synthetic distinction. Specifically, the author concentrates on some of the medium specific effects of postclassical visualising technologies, from high-end ensembles such as virtual reality and medical imaging apparatuses, to the mundane apparatus of television and the remote control device. Such ways of seeing, it is argued, collaborate in producing an emergent tele-body, or a telesomatic mode of perception and knowing which exceeds standard epistemologies of vision in both science and the everyday. This work thus aims to develop a theoretical and conceptual framework for understanding the variable effects of postclassical technovision and televisuality upon our modes of embodiment.

Hexachlorobenzene (HCB) is a pollutant, and there is an urgent need to degrade it. Two methods of degrading HCB to ethers are nucleophilic substitution and electroreduction, chosen for their viability and safety. The kinetics of substitution of HCB by potassium hydroxide and methanol were examined. The substitution of HCB by methoxide produced 1,2,3,5-tetrachloro-4.6-dimethoxybenzene (1,2,3,5-TCDMB) as the major substitution product, and side reactions produced extra chloride due to other substitution products. Thus, the proposed reaction mechanism is complicated due to the formation of ethers and phenols due to consecutive and parallel reactions. The substitution products of HCB were uncatalytically and catalytically electroreduced. Products with increasingly more methoxy substituents had lower electron affinities and increasing positive free energies. Catalysed electroreduction was more effective than uncatalysed electroreduction in dechlorinating the HCB substitution products to aromatic ethers. The most effective organic catalysts were those that possessed the lowest electron affinity as reflected in the reduction potential. A combination of nucleophilic substitution and electroreduction of HCB and its substitution products produced mono-, di- and trimethoxide chloroaromatic ethers and phenols. These products, particularly the ethers, may have future applications as fragrance ingredients

Environmental education is a relatively young area that can trace its roots back to the global environmental crises of the late 1960s and 1970s. Research in environmental education since this time has established the justification for its existence in the formal curriculum of schools. Less research has been conducted on the actual pedagogy of environmental education. This forms one part of the justification for this research study. The other justification for this research study is school students' objectification of the environment evidenced from the findings of a large survey of NSW school students. The objectification of the environment finding referred to students' responses that suggested that the environment was separate from them in contrast to a minority of students' responses that referred to a relational view (Loughland, Reid, Walker & Petocz, 2003). The two foci of pedagogy and students' understandings of the environment come together in the research question of this thesis, what is the relation between pedagogy and representations of the environment in environmental education? A Bernsteinian model of pedagogy, the pedagogical device, underpins the theoretical analysis of the pedagogy of environmental education in this study (Bernstein, 1990). A particular aspect of this device, the pedagogic recontextualising field, is used as a framework of analysis for the exposition of the major influences on the development of pedagogy of environmental education in NSW. Another theory of pedagogy, the NSW Quality Teaching Framework, is used to offer a performative angle on pedagogy to provide theoretical triangulation for the study. The pedagogy of environmental education was examined through a classroom ethnography with the researcher acting as a participant observer. The data were in the form of field notes, curriculum materials including children's literature, transcripts of classroom learning and products of students' learning. The analysis of the data was conducted using a variety of methods of analysis. The data were initially coded for themes that were the different representations of the environment in the pedagogy of this classroom. Further, the NSW Quality Teaching Framework (NSW DET 2003) was used as a theoretical framework of analysis in order to examine the data from the perspective of student performance in relation to current understandings of what constitutes good pedagogical practice. Next, Bernstein's model of the pedagogic device (1990) was used to analyse the data in the larger context of the social construction of knowledge in the school curriculum. This analysis incorporated Bernstein's original notions of pedagogical classification and framing (1971). This study has two main findings. First, the pedagogy of environmental education has strong classification and framing (after Bernstein 1971) that supports the objectification of the environment. Second, there is also some weak framing of the pedagogy of environmental education that generally does not support the objectification of the environment. The implications for these findings for practice are that environmental educators should be aware of deterministic curriculum that seeks to impose one view of the environment onto students. This curriculum positions the environment as an object that needs to be saved through human intervention. Further research into the pedagogy of environmental education that explores the relation of students' understandings of the environment and their relation to the epistemological and theoretical bases of pedagogy is warranted as a result of this study.

This dissertation focuses on conceptual frameworks from which to study information systems knowledge management (ISKM). Knowledge management (KM) is an emergent discipline arising from a breadth of fields with conflicting definitions and approaches to applying KM processes. The diversity of approaches is symptomatic of the need for development of theoretical foundations that provide a deeper understanding of the knowledge phenomena in organisations, and for KM methodologies grounded in such theoretical foundations. The study highlights conflicting tensions on various sensemaking levels, such as that between individual need for creativity and flexibility against organisational need for regulatory standardisation, and demonstrates the need for organisations to seek answers to these challenges within their own cultural setting.

Australia's space activities since the early sixties have been science-oriented and uncoordinated. As a result, Australia has been unable to develop a long-term sustainable domestic technological capability; with industry being dependent on government funding for its involvement in the nation's space plan. This thesis examines public policy aspects focussing on technology independence that is the building of competencies for the sustainable development of an industry. It compares national technological development by relating Australia's recent space-related successes and failures to those of other nations (especially selected Asian countries and Israel). The overarching research problem addressed within this thesis examined the Australian national space policy and strategy since 1984.It investigated why the Australian Space Industry Development Strategy was not a successful influence on the development of a long-term sustainable national technological base or on the establishment of a viable commercial space-related industry in Australia. The research included the development of a strategic multilevel planning system involving a network innovation model into a nation's space science and technology policy development. The outcomes of the research reported in the thesis are discussed. The level of technological capability and capacity is a direct, inversely related factor to an increase in the degree in technology dependency. Australia needs a change of philosophy by accepting the global challenge through defining and supporting, within a national strategic planning, a national space strategy that incorporates network innovation concepts: a concept that must involve a balanced supply (science) and demand (commercial) characteristics of an innovation network system.

Early childhood curriculum is limited when early multiliteracies are insufficiently understood. The purpose of this doctorate is to investigate and document children’s early multiliteracies. Children actively learn multiliteracies, including critical dialogue, through their relationships and interactions within family and community. My goal is to influence early childhood policy-makers and educators to reconceptualise early multiliteracies through examining family practices, children’s agency and critical dialogue, subsequently strengthening pedagogical practice. This reconceptualisation is crucial to ensure engaging curriculum and equitable multiliteracies learning opportunities for all children. The challenge lies in deepening the integration of these distinctive themes within a broad curriculum. Papers contained in this portfolio examine young children’s multiliteracies, at home and in educational settings from theoretical, practice and philosophical perspectives. They present findings from four research projects which respectively focus on early literacy and social justice, internet services, play and literacy, and critical dialogue. These projects primarily draw on qualitative strategies of inquiry located within the constructivist-interpretative paradigm. Three projects involved participants from largely metropolitan and coastal New South Wales in Australia, whilst one took a national perspective by engaging a small number of participants across Australia. My research strategies emerging from an educational ethnographic stance included grounded theory, case study and practitioner research. Methods of collecting and analysing evidence drew on literature, observations, individual and group interviews, focus groups and artifacts. The portfolio brings together the major themes of family practices, children’s agency and critical dialogue. My papers argue for educators and policy makers to reconceptualise early multiliteracies from children’s lived experiences, to strengthen relationships with families and so expand possibilities for all children’s multiliteracies learning and critical dialogue, especially enabling children to critique their social worlds. This portfolio comprises an Introduction, an Overarching Statement, a Record of Research Participation, Evidence of Scholarly Activity containing 11 portfolio papers and Appendices and References. The Overarching Statement outlines themes within this doctorate in relation to literature and examines the directions which shape the portfolio papers. Next this statement identifies and rationalises the four research projects and research events. The strategies of inquiry as well as methods of collecting and analysing evidence are then explained. Next, the contribution of the research projects towards my personal and professional development, and the field of scholarship are given. Finally my future directions are outlined.

This thesis investigates the problem of market mechanism design for supply chain management and e-marketplace development. Instead of viewing a market as an isolated entity, we consider each market to be a part of a supply chain and study the effects of interactions between different markets in the supply chain. We focus on three important issues in relation to market mechanism design and investigate them using a variety of approaches, such as game-theoretic, strategic and experimental methods. Capacity allocation has been a research topic in management science and operations research for several years, dealing with imbalance between supply and demand in a market. In recent years, this topic, known as resource allocation, has become an active research area in computer science. The first issue we consider is how to design market mechanisms for capacity allocation. We deal with capacity allocation problems in a supply chain model rather than in a single market. Based on this model, we examine the game-theoretic properties of allocation mechanisms, such as efficiency, profit maximising, and truth-telling, with respect to quantity competition and price competition in a related market of the supply chain. We prove that a few typical allocation mechanisms that have been generally used in industry are sensitive to supply chain settings. For instance, proportional allocation is no longer a Pareto optimal allocation mechanism in our supply chain model in contrast to the results in the existing researches that deal with monopolistic downstream markets. There are two reasons for this. The first reason is that competition in our supply chain model makes retailers submit greater orders than the quantities that maximises the total retailer profit. The second reason is that proportional allocation does not strictly prioritise allocations to the best performing retailers. As a result, this allocation mechanism does not maximise the total retailer profit. In order to achieve Pareto optimality, we propose max-max allocation that strictly prioritises the greater orders. We prove that this allocation mechanism satisfies Pareto optimality in our competitive supply chain model. However, under this allocation mechanism, we show that retailers inflate orders. This phenomenon is known as bullwhip effect in supply chains which leads inaccurate transmission of order information. In order to prevent order inflation, we design a new allocation mechanism, capped-allocation, which assigns maximum allocation quantity prior to order submission. In addition to analyse how supply chain settings influence properties of allocation mechanisms, we undertake equilibrium analysis that shows how allocation mechanisms influence market behaviour in supply chains. We prove that order quantities are greater under proportional allocation than the ones under uniform allocation. Under price competition, proportional allocation leads higher market price than uniform allocation. A key reason is that strict imbalance of allocation leads higher market prices and proportional allocation tends to allocate heterogeneously. The second issue we investigate is design of market mechanisms for online markets. Typical market participants in online markets are loosely connected even though online market owners require their business partners such as sellers. In order to bind these market participants, we introduce an approach to the modelling of online markets as supply chains, in which a coordination mechanism is applied to the market between the online market owner and the sellers. We examine a set of coordination mechanisms based on fixed-fee contracts, revenue-sharing contracts, and profit-sharing contracts in relation to different marketing strategies, such as advertisement. We prove that the fixed-fee contract achieves coordination while the revenue-sharing contract does not achieve coordination if we do not consider the effect of advertisement.
These results are opposed to the existing researches in traditional intermediaries. A key reason is that online market owners do not deal with transactional costs, in contrast to the transactional intermediaries. Therefore, revenue-sharing may charge more than the coordinated case. We design a new online market contact based on the idea of profit-sharing and prove that it achieves coordination between online market owners and sellers with advertisement. This contract shares both revenue and cost between these parties. Finally, we explore the problem of market mechanism design using autonomous trading agents. We introduce a formal representation of market policies, such as accepting policies, charging policies, pricing policies and matching policies, based on double auction mechanisms. By utilising the Market Design Game platform for the Trading Agent Competition (TAC), we analyse how specific market policies influence market behaviour of specific types of autonomous trading agents using experimental methods. We design a range of market policies and test them with three types of trading agents: random, learning and human-like bidding agents. We find that market performance, such as the profit of market makers, allocation efficiency and transaction volume, improves with time. The experiments also show that the periodic clearing policy gives market makers greater profits than the continuous clearing for all three types of trading agents we use. However, for learning and human-like bidding agents, the continuous clearing policy is preferable to the periodic clearing policy because it can improve allocation efficiency and transaction volume. Based on this experimental approach, we design and implement our market mechanism. This mechanism has been tested and proved as a robust, efficient and effective market mechanism as a winner of the tenth Trading Agent Competition in Market Design.

This thesis focuses on the redevelopment of two child welfare case management systems used in Australia: Looking After Children (LAC) and Supporting Children and Responding to Families (SCARF). LAC and SCARF are attempts to address the poor outcomes that are widely agreed to be experienced by children in ‘out of home care‘ or ‘in need‘ in their own families. These case management systems are significant attempts to change social work practice. They represent a shift from earlier modes of practice characterised by autonomous professional relationships to more standardised approaches to social work. They rely heavily on written text and open the opportunity to use information and communication technology (ICT) in child welfare services. A decade after their introduction, the local licensee of these case management systems sought to reassess the use of LAC and SCARF in Australia. This thesis is part of that process. It aims to address three issues: firstly, to investigate the experiences of children, young people and their families of case managed interventions; secondly, to see if recent developments in ICT could contribute to children‘s welfare if integrated into case management systems, and if so how; and thirdly, to examine how the answers to these questions could inform the future development of case management systems. I take a social constructionist approach to LAC and SCARF and the research questions and draw on Michel Foucault‘s theories of discourse and power/knowledge. I explore LAC and SCARF as texts that embody discourses of social work, management and childhood, and reflect tendencies towards ‘technologisation‘ and ‘democratisation‘ (Fairclough, 1992). I use social constructionist theories to explore the increased use of written text and ICT in child welfare. I identify these discourses by using Fairclough‘s text oriented discourse analysis (TODA) with three sets of texts: the relevant social work literature, the LAC and SCARF forms and transcripts of semi-structured interviews undertaken in a study with service users. The study undertaken for this thesis augmented the limited international and local research on service users experiences of case management systems, and, extended the scope of these studies to consider the neglected impact of technology in social work interventions. I undertook the design, implementation and interpretation of the study by considering the exercise of power in the research setting. The study was unique in that it explored the long-term use of case management systems in which service users were no longer dependent on welfare agencies. The 2 and others to subjugate service users voices. The study findings relate to the aims, planning process, power relations and technology of the case managed intervention. Service users were found to have a wide range of experiences. Many participants valued practical, social and emotional assistance and the development of insight. The findings indicated that trusting and reliable relationships between service users and social workers were possible. Service users, however, challenged the way in which poverty, extended family relations and childhood were understood and wanted more specialised assistance. They identified written text as creating barriers to their participation in interventions. They described the case management systems as failing to constrain their own, or workers‘, exercise of power. Technology was inevitably part of these child welfare interventions. The existing pen and paper-based systems were problematic. ICT was shown to have communication possibilities in child welfare interventions, and its greater use could potentially address the increasing social disadvantage of service users in the wider society. Although growth in the use of ICT appeared inevitable, however, methods employed aimed, as far as possible, to acknowledge and restrict the opportunity for myself
ICT was shown to have limited impact on social work aims and processes and may be problematic in child welfare. In addition, there were significant barriers to the immediate use of ICT, including limited availability, co-option by social workers and managers and poor understanding of ICT‘s impact on communication in social work practice. The findings of this study provide a basis for redevelopment of LAC and SCARF and the construction of social work knowledge. Service users could make an important contribution, and this study has identified areas in which social work knowledge could better reflect their experiences. This is particularly so as social workers are significantly divided over the aims and processes of intervention, and there is only limited debate about the effects on child welfare of societal -orders of discourse regarding childhood,‘democratisation‘ and ‘technologisation‘. Social workers interests need to be differentiated from those of service users, particularly in relation to the use of ICT. Future development of case management systems will be highly contested given the complex and socially significant discourses that they embody. Change will be constrained, but inevitable, and discourses must be monitored for their impact. Methods and opportunities must be found to involve service users in the redevelopment of case management systems. ICT will play an increasing role in social work practice, and will require ongoing assessment. This study provides a possible starting point for policy development focused on service users experiences.

Creating and performing electroacoustic music utilising interactive systems is now a well-established paradigm. Sensing technology can map gestures to sound generating processes, capturing the nuances of a gesture and sculpting the sound accordingly. Interactive installations enable audiences to become part of the process of realising a creative work. Yet many of the models and frameworks for interactive systems, specifically music focused systems, are strongly oriented around a MIDI event based framework, with little or no provision to accommodate the potentials of more dynamic approaches to creative practice. This research seeks to address the lack of appropriate models currently available and come to a more contemporary understanding of interactive music making. My approach follows two trajectories. Firstly, I undertake a comprehensive review of interactive creative works, encompassing the live electronic music of the 1950s and 1960s, interactive installation, digital musical instruments and computer networked ensembles. Secondly, I explore and draw together proposed definitions, models and classifications of interactive systems, clarifying concepts such as mapping, processing, gesture and response. Throughout the centuries, business lives have been changing and modifying. Each era in history brought new needs, demands and requirements. During the Agricultural era land and tools played important roles, while during the Industrial era machines and factories played a dominant role in shaping the organisational and social structures. Today, we find ourselves in the Information era where Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has a crucial role and has become an integral business component. Survival of businesses nowadays depends strongly on how well they can use ICT to enhance their business processes. Successful electronic transformation is determined by how well companies can identify and implement the eTransformation requirements and with it adjust to the demands of the Information era. Previous research indicates that Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in particular are struggling to find the optimal way in which to track, guide and measure their eTransformation journey. In order to identify this, the following research question was proposed: “How can SMEs guide, track and measure the progress made along the eTransformation journey? The Researcher identified that to conduct this investigation the Cynefin framework would be the most suitable methodology. The framework provides techniques and methods to move the problem from one domain to the other until the solution is found. Furthermore, the methodology is based on the concept that each problem and the difficulty of solving it, can be classified into one of the Cynefin domains namely: Chaos, the extreme of the unknown, Complex, Knowable and Known, the solution. When conducting the literature review and studying the eTransformation of the
SMEs today the Researcher identified that the problem that requires the identification of “How SMEs can guide, track and measure the progress made along the eTransformation journey” is in the Cynefin domain of Chaos as at that time there is no known solutions to the problem. To find out the best way to move the problem from unknown closer to the solution, in this case from Chaos to Complex, the Researcher studied currently known data. The study helped identify issues and challenges of eTransformation and reasons why companies throughout the history wanted to undertake transformation and change. Moreover, the study helped the Researcher understand the situation SMEs were facing and has allowed the Researcher to identify new pattern formations. This brought the problem into the Complex domain where now patterns were emerging and desirable ones required stabilisation. Therefore, to understand the patterns better the Researcher studied models of Organisational Change and eTransformation. The studies identified that the eTransformation Road Map assesses eTransformation along the Dimension of IT Tools and Systems the most comprehensively. Furthermore, the study revealed that eTransformation is a staged process and that it is influenced not only by the ICT factors, but also by other non- ICT factors, therefore that it is multidimensional. To identify other dimensions the Researcher, through case studies, pinpointed Key Features of eTransformation as well as that Tasks and Processes are one of the other dimensions playing a role in eTransformation. While studying eTransformation models the Researcher also reviewed models used to measure the effectiveness of ICT within the organisations (Valuations Model) where it was identified that eTransformation cannot be measured in monetary values. Therefore, to identify possible measurement criteria, the Researcher continued to study Characteristics of eTransformation through case study narratives, which helped pattern stabilisation. Conducted narrative analysis identified that to pinpoint dimensions, which influence eTransformation, dimensions of the 7 S Model would need to be studied. The investigation was conducted through interviews. Data analysis of the interviews allowed the Researcher to identify four Dimensions crucial for eTransformation. Firstly, eTransforming SMEs are required to identify their Strategy – business goals and values, following by Structure – business departments and functions, then business Tasks and Processes – essential activities for business operations so that an SME can achieve their set goals and objectives, and finally IT Tools and Systems – business technology essential to complete set activities quickly and smoothly. Following the above finding the Researcher studied eTransforming SMEs with the aim of identifying characteristics of companies for each of the eTransformation dimensions across eTransformation stages. Following the identification of eTransformation Dimensions and their Characteristics, questions, abilities and recommendations for the model, eT Guide, that can be used to track, guide and measure eTransformation were tested and applied to 30 SMEs. The study resulted in the production of eT Reports which SMEs could now use to track, measure and guide their eTransformation journey. This led to the identification of the eT Guide requirements which brought this research closer to the solution and moved the problem from the Complex domain into Knowable where an expert, here the Researcher, had the solution to the problem. Next step for the Researcher was to move the problem from the Knowable domain into Known and design and develop an online eT Guide System that SMEs could use themselves.
As a result of this research, the problem has been moved from the Chaos domain into a solution of the Known domain which is accessible to the SMEs. The solution, eT Guide, can now be used by all eTransforming SMEs themselves. By answering a series of yes / no questions, SMEs can identify their current eTransformation stage, their abilities - what they can do with the resources they currently have and their recommendations - what they could do in order to improve in the form of an eT Report. Furthermore, the system allows organisations to regularly track and measure their progress through features of eT History and eT Position. In the years to come, it is expected that the eT Guide will help assist eTransforming businesses and provide them with the essentials that would help them sustain pressures of the Information era.

This thesis is concerned with the derivation of similarity solutions for one-dimensional coupled systems of reaction - diffusion equations, a semi-linear system and a one-dimensional tripled system. The first area of research in this thesis involves a coupled system of diffusion equations for the existence of two distinct families of diffusion paths. Constructing one-parameter transformation groups preserving the invariance of this system of equations enables similarity solutions for this coupled system to be derived via the classical and non-classical procedures. This system of equation is the uncoupled in the hope of recovering further similarity solutions for the system. Once again, one-parameter groups leaving the uncoupled system invariant are obtained, enabling similarity solutions for the system to be elicited. A one-dimensional pattern formation in a model of burning forms the next component of this thesis. The primary focus of this area is the determination of similarity solutions for this reaction - diffusion system by means of one-parameter transformation group methods. Consequently, similarity solutions which are a generalisation of the solutions of the one-dimensional steady equations derived by Forbes are deduced. Attention in this thesis is then directed toward a semi-linear coupled system representing a predator - prey relationship. Two approaches to solving this system are made using the classical procedure, leading to one-parameter transformation groups which are instrumental in elicting the general similarity solution for this system. A triple system of equations representing a one-dimensional case of diffusion in the presence of three diffusion paths constitutes the next theme of this thesis. In association with the classical and non-classical procedures, the derivation of one-parameter transformation groups leaving this system invariant enables similarity solutions for this system to be deduced. The final strand of this thesis involves a one- dimensional case of the general linear system of coupled diffusion equations with cross-effects for which one-parameter transformation group methods are once more employed. The one-parameter groups constructed for this system prove instrumental in enabling the attainment of similarity solutions for this system to be accomplished

This study discusses the strategies and lessons learned by the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in targeting rice research toward poor women.The strategies include socio-economic research on gender issues;technology development for women-specific tasks through participatory research; collaborative research with national agricultural research systems (NARS) and networks; research-oriented training on gender analysis; organization of conferences and workshops on gender issues; recognition of female rice scientists; gender audit of research projects and appointment of a social scientist to coordinate gender-related activities.A revised conceptual framework of farming systems research and gender analysis was used to better understand the complex interrelationship between the environment (physical, socio-economic, cultural), and intra-household dynamics, particularly men and women's roles and responsibilities in rice-based farming systems.Case studies were conducted in the Philippines and eastern India.Improved seed management and adoption of improved glutinous rice varieties showed potential for increasing yields and income.Women's narratives were interwoven within the quantitative analysis to make their voices heard in the story.The most important lesson learned from the author's experience is that targeting research toward poor rural women can be an effective strategy in providing them with choices, opportunities and abilities to enhance their role as food producers. The principal aims of this thesis were to examine whether there were hydraulic links between individual on-site wastewater systems in sandy soils at Salt Ash and the Tilgerry Creek estuary near Port Stephens, New South Wales, and whether the chemical and microbiological contaminants from on-site systems could reach surface and groundwaters, and possibly lead to impacts on estuarine oyster growing waters. The research outcomes are contained within the thesis and in four refereed papers presented at conferences, and which have been subsequently published, or are in press. Copies of each of these papers are contained within the thesis Appendices. The presence of faecal contamination from domestic systems in the estuary, and surface drains in particular, has been confirmed by work contained in this thesis. The potential level of risk to human health from the consumption of contaminated oysters is, however, regarded as very low, although an assessment of health risk using established microbial assessment models has not been undertaken

In this integration the inherent security flaws and associated problems of these technological advancements are also brought together under this web environment. These flaws, when exploited, could lead to system compromises of various kinds including stealing of security sensitive information, system take-over fabrication of fake electronic documents and illegal alteration to web sites contents. Therefore, the successful, prompt and appropriate responses of these complex web-based systems to security threats and breaches, such as in the cases of document tampering and misrepresentation from illegal users, are imperative in promoting the user's willingness and confidence when interacting with these systems. Accordingly, this has become one of the major concerns in development, management and operation of web-based systems. This thesis also studies the authentication of dynamic web contents through the application of a one-time digital signature. To this effect, relevant concepts and possible approaches have been discussed. Authentication and verification of dynamic contents, efficiently in the web environment, is suggested as a separate research area and as a direction for future work.

Using Computational Fluid Dynamics Simulations, the flow in the new University of Sydney closed circuit wind tunnel has been analyzed prior to the construction of the tunnel. The objective was to obtain a uniform flow in the test section of the wind tunnel while keeping the pressure losses over the tunnel as low as possible. This was achieved by using several flow-improving components such as guide vanes, screens, a honeycomb and a settling chamber. The guide vanes were used in the corners and in the diverging part leading into the settling chamber, giving a significant improvement of the flow as they prevent it from taking undesired paths. The settling chamber is used to decelerate the flow before it is accelerated when leaving the settling chamber, a process which reduces the turbulence in the flow. Screens were used in the settling chamber to further improve the flow by imposing a pressure drop which evens out differences in the flow speed and reduces the turbulence. The honeycomb, which is situated in the end of the settling chamber, makes the flow more uniform by forcing it to go in only one direction. A uniform flow was obtained using three screens and one honeycomb together with the guide vanes and the settling chamber.

This thesis took the TPACK framework (Mishra and Koehler, 2006) as its theoretical starting point and posed the question: how do a group of exemplary teachers conceptualise their knowledge of technology integration in education contexts? The research was a series of purposeful, intensive case studies of four teachers in Stages 1-5 classrooms (approximate ages 6-16 years) in different school sites. The study found that the teachers‟ knowledge of technology integration is constructed on theory (T), creativity (C), public learning (P), life preparation (L) and contextual accommodations (C). These five main conceptions are underpinned by particular pedagogical themes. In the first conception, T, is underpinned by construction of learning, purposeful teaching, focused planning, enriched subject matter, promotion of reflective learning, shifts in conversations and thinking and authentic student engagement. The second conception, C, is underpinned by boosting creative learning, creating opportunities for production, unleashing playful moments, supporting values and differentiating learning. The third conception, P, is underpinned by scaffolding performance by making learning public and enhancing outcomes. Life preparation, or L, is underpinned by operationalising the real world, giving voice, ownership and responsibility, and the revelation of effectiveness in terms of self-regulation and self-efficacy. The final conception, contextual accommodations, C, is underpinned by the personal and professional, changes to time, nurturing community and defining the game. Each initial of the conceptions come together to form a fresh equation, T+C+P+L+C = high possibility classrooms (HPC). The study findings add to what is known about the TPACK framework by deriving five new conceptions out of exemplary teachers‟ knowledge of technology integration. Recent moves in some futures literature (Chen, 2010; Craft, 2011, Gardner, 2012; Mishra and Koehler, 2012a; Pink, 2009; Robinson, 2012; Zhao, 2012) reflect the study findings about where education must go if young people are to be involved in high possibility classrooms where they are given opportunities to learn well, be creative, productive and thinking citizens who 2 can help solve some of the world’s most significant problems. New knowledge generated by this study forms a useful and practical conduit to ensuring all children have an experience of learning that is important and relevant. The study findings are both theoretical and practical in their approach to graduate and experienced teachers‟ knowledge of technology integration and will be of critical significance to leaders in teacher professional learning in education jurisdictions.
