Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of the study is to determine the most preferred catalogue format – card catalogue or online public access catalogue (OPAC) for searching library material in Oriental languages, i.e. Urdu, Arabic, Persian, Punjabi, Hindi, Sanskrit, Sindhi and Pashto of the Central Library, University of the Punjab, Lahore. It also explores the users’ searching behaviour for finding the library material in Oriental languages. Design/methodology/approach – A purposive sample of 100 respondents was chosen for this study. The questionnaire contained both close- and open-ended questions. SPSS (version 11.5) was used for quantitative analysis of data. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used for reaching conclusions. The qualitative data analysis software “X-Sight” was used for analysing the qualitative data. Findings – The study highlights the importance of both types of catalogue. Many of the findings of the study related to the card catalogue and OPAC are surprising when compared to their general perceptions. It is important to note that the users perceived the card catalogue as more effective for searching the library material in Oriental languages. However, they also face many problems while using both types of catalogues. Originality/value – It is the first study of its type in Pakistan that explored the users’ perceptions and behaviour of searching Oriental language material from the card catalogue and OPAC. The findings of the study are valuable for library management, not only at the Central Library of Punjab University but also for other libraries. These findings can help in making both card catalogue and OPAC more effective and user-centred. It will also assist them to improve weaknesses of both types of catalogues. Implications of the study – This study compares the users’ preferences for card catalogue and/or OPAC when searching Oriental language material. There are very few studies available on this subject and most of them are dated.

Abstract:
Visually disabled people confront numerous problems in learning and completing typical activities due to their peculiar physical condition. This study aims to focus on the usefulness of the Social Model of Disability for English Language Teaching to visually impaired students in the institute of Pakistan. The visually students are those who study with other students in the same public sector. We are comparing Punjab University and Lahore College of Women University with the other universities that are not using the social model of disability Government graduate college of science and Samanabad College. The results indicate that the Social Model of Disability can help disabled students and teachers understand each other better. The way language is taught in their institution provides them with the same possibilities to study language as other students; it was demonstrated that students believe that their language teacher is assisting them in overcoming language learning hurdles. So, it has been concluded that Punjab University and Lahore College of Women University are using the social model of disability in their teaching of visually impaired students, while the Government graduate college of science and Samanabad college is not using this social model in their teaching.

Abstract:
The Department for the "administration of affairs with Asian nations" at College of Foreign Affairs was established on February 26, 1796 by the imperial decree and the school for Chinese, Manchu, Persian and Turkish languages translators was opened one year later. However, special training of the Russian diplomatic corps, dealing with the relations with Asian nations, was established only in the XIX century. In 1815 Lazarev Institute of Oriental Languages was founded. In 1823 Training Department of Oriental Languages at the Asian Department of the Foreign Ministry of the Russian Empire was established. The tradition was continued by the Soviet Russian Institute of Oriental Studies, which become a leading center for the training of specialists, necessary for most important public institutions and social organizations. Moscow Institute for Oriental Studies inherited traditions and rich library from Lazarev Institute. At the confluence of MGIMO and Moscow Institute of Oriental Studies in 1954 the library holdings were transferred to the MGIMO, they now form the basis of the rare fund of the university research library. Development of Oriental School MGIMO historically was influenced by the specifics of the traditional conglomerate of Oriental Sciences and ever increasing needs in the practical application of knowledge about the East. Of course, in addition to the Lazarev Institute other leading centers of domestic study of the East made a considerable impact on the development of Oriental Studies at MGIMO. St. Petersburg (Leningrad) University and the University of Kazan are the most prominent ones, where the Oriental Studies tradition is rooted in the XIX century. Evacuation of many prominent representatives of the Moscow and Leningrad school of Oriental Studies during the Great Patriotic War to Kazan and Central Asia gave new impetus to oriental studies at universities in these regions.

Abstract:
Fareeha Zafar’s book Canals, Colonies and Class: British Policy in the Punjab 1880-1940 is essentially an edited reproduction of her PhD thesis, The Impact of Canal Construction on the Rural Structures of the Punjab: The Canal Colony Districts, 1880 To 1940. The thesis was completed about 35 years ago at the School of Oriental and African Studies, the University of London (now SOAS, the University of London). She studies the British colonisation process in the Punjab and its effect on the local environment, the production patterns, and social relations, understanding that despite several similar studies on the region, no serious effort had been made to synthesise these issues the way she does in this book. However, in the form of a new book, the synthesis does not add much value as it reiterates the British colonisers’ well-known strategies, namely irrigation development as a tool to settle disarmed forces and nomads and, thereby, strengthening a class of local landed elite to maintain their power in the colonies, their revenue-seeking policies, indebtedness of the landed class and alike. Nevertheless, considering the timing of the original contribution, the book, if read together with the contributions such as Khuhro (1978/1999) and Cheesman (1997), provides a relatively rich description of geographers’ analyses of the British policies, their intentions, and their effects.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper argues that concerns for the government appointment of qazis, officers for the administration of Muslim law, and the greater application of shari'at critically shaped Muslim community formation in later nineteenth century Punjab. Between 1865 and 1885, Punjabi Muslim elites attested the necessity of qazis being appointed by government and Muslim law being administered in the colonial judicial system. With the support of Gottlieb Leitner, registrar of the Punjab University College, Muslim parties used the emergent associations of Punjab civil society, including the Anjuman-i-Punjab (Lahore) and Anjuman-i-Islam (Lahore), to assert the indispensability of religious law. In doing so, they challenged the Anglo-Indian decision to prioritize customary law in the Punjab and advanced the religious group as the basic social unit of Punjab society. In Punjab public spaces, the relevance of Islam was proclaimed, challenging the professed Anglo-Indian distinction between private and public, religious and secular spheres. However, demands for qazi appointment and the administration of shari'at problematize well-rehearsed arguments about the relationships between family, community, state and religion in colonial Punjab. Only through an enquiry into the two decades after 1865 may later political campaigns for the application of shari'at be understood.

Abstract:
Using a quantitative approach employing a descriptive survey research design, 150 Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEED) alumni of the Davao Oriental State University – Cateel Extension Campus (DORSU-CEC) from the classes of 2013-2021 were surveyed for to conduct this tracer study. Results revealed that most of graduates were females, single, employed regular or permanent basic education teachers within Davao Oriental under public or government organizations. Parents or relatives were very influential in their choice of program in college. Their main employer was the Department of Education (DepEd), and they occupied professional, technical or supervisory job level positions in their first and present employment. Further, graduates acquired their first job within 1 to 6 months after graduating in college, and earned a monthly income of almost ₱27,500 in their first and present employment. Moreover, graduates perceived that the curriculum offered to them in college was relevant in their first and present employment. They believed that communication skills and discipline that they learned in college are the most useful competency and core values on their employment. Additionally, the courses in the campus can be strengthened further if the library and laboratory are provided with more resources, equipment, and facilities that can aid the students in their studies, and if the campus offers more number of optional subjects.

Abstract:
The present study was conducted August to December, 2019 under the Department of Human Development and Family Studies, College of Community Science, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana, Punjab, India to assess the relationship between the well-being index and interpersonal support among university students i.e. Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar (GNDU), Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana (PAU) and Punjabi University, Patiala (PUP). The sample consisted of 480 students from the science stream studying in the 1st and 2nd years of the undergraduate program. The sample consisted of an equal number of first-year students (n=80) and second-year students (n=80) from each university. Random sampling was done to draw samples from three purposively selected universities. The study’s objective was to assess the relationship between the well-being index and interpersonal support of university students. The well-being index and the Interpersonal support scale were used as data collection tools to evaluate the well-being index and available interpersonal support among university students. Statistical tools were used to analyse the data. The results revealed that all the dimensions of the well-being index were positively related to interpersonal support year-wise, gender-wise, and overall universities-wise. Those students who perceived higher levels of interpersonal support also tended to have higher levels of well-being across various dimensions. The study will be helpful for the youth to understand the importance of interpersonal support and its relationship with the well-being index. University students who perceived better social support networks tend to have higher levels of well-being compared to those who lack such support.

Abstract:
Each year, thousands of individuals are diagnosed with an illness directly related to poorly designed workstations, and among these are Musculoskeletal Disorders (MSDs). MSDs are the repeated trauma and deterioration of the tissues, joint, tendons, and nerves that affect the muscles and supporting structures of the body, caused by the work nature or by an employee’s working environment (Bernard 1997). The prevalence of Work-related Musculoskeletal Disorders (WMSD‘s) is increasing among Computer users throughout the world. Approximately 76% of Computer professionals from India reported musculoskeletal discomfort in various epidemiological studies. So, the present study was undertaken to study computer/laptop use pattern and knowledge of related ergonomic practices among students of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana, India and to assess the prevalence and magnitude of computer/laptop use related MSDs among students. 120 students pursuing post-graduation were selected randomly from the four different disciplines namely College of Agriculture, College of Agriculture Engineering and Technology, College of Basic Sciences and Humanities and College of Home Science of PAU. Results revealed that majority of the respondents were in the age group of 26-27 years. They were using computer/laptop for 3-4 years, for 3-4 hours daily and they used to sit in bed while working on computer/laptop. Majority of the respondents had some knowledge about the importance of work behavior while using computer/laptop. Most of the total respondents felt pain in the neck (88.32%), lower back (75.00%), mid back (73.33%) and upper back (72.50%) while working on computer/laptop. Overall bodily fatigue or tiredness, shoulder or back pain/stiffness and headache during or after working on the computer were the major symptoms as reported by respondents

Abstract:
I had originally thought of calling this piece, with a startlinglack of originality, ‘Forty years on’. It is after all exactly forty years since my own existing interests in African bibliography became formalised when I followed the option ‘Oriental and African bibliography’ at the School of Library Studies, University College London, taught by J.D. Pearson, the Librarian of the School of Oriental and African Studies. I later came to teach thisoption myself, from 1965 onwards, and indeed to follow Pearson by becoming the second to hold a chair entitled ‘Professor of the Bibliography of Asia and Africa in the University of London’. And in 2002 it will be forty years since SCOLMA (Standing Committee on Library Materials on Africa) was founded, the body that has done most in the U.K. to respond to the perceived needs of African bibliography, and one with which I have been associated for many years.

Abstract:
Social media has taken over our lives in this era of technology and globalization in many ways. Among many other impacts on the users, the language choices, and expressions, mostly preferred by youth, are manipulated and affected by such online platforms. With this in view, this research seeks to understand how social media has transformed the language expressions of young Pakistanis. It also focuses on the possible resultant changes in linguistic choices made by youth after being influenced by social media. Data was collected through previous papers to discover the research gaps, and an online survey/questionnaire was administered to fulfil this study's goal. Fifty participants were randomly selected from five educational institutions in Sialkot, Pakistan (Govt. Abstract:
Students are vital to the growth of society and nations. Universities prepare students for the real world. The study examines the threat of e-bullying to university students' social lives. The study's goal was to discover how college students perceive and use e-bullying in their daily lives. It was a descriptive study. In this survey, students from two public universities in Southern Punjab were included. The study sample was obtained by a multi-stage sampling method, and data was collected from a sample of 200 university students. A self-developed questionnaire was used to collect data from the study sample. Personal visits collected the data. The data was examined as a percentage. According to the survey, university students have more online friends than "real world" pals because they find it more manageable. The results suggest that university students want to establish a more social and polite online world.

Abstract:
AbstractDaughter of a Victorian clergyman, Caroline Mary Ridding (1862–1941) was one of the few experts who could catalogue the materials that came to the UK in the wake of the Younghusband Mission. In 1911, after completing her work on the part of the collection received by the Cambridge University Library, she was put forward as the curator of the Oriental department of the library. This proposal was rejected with five favourable and six contrary votes but was nonetheless remarkable and shows how the acquisition of competence in rare and emerging subjects such as Oriental studies could open spaces for women at a time in which they were still largely excluded from academia. It also shows how books could make people and shape lives. Having graduated in classics from Girton College, Cambridge, Ridding became a Sanskritist and eventually taught herself Tibetan. After spending a significant amount of unpaid time poring over esoteric Buddhist documents that few people at the time could read, she eventually became a respected member of the Royal Asiatic Society and the first woman to be employed by the Cambridge University Library. This article explores the relationship between the life of this eccentric woman and oriental books and manuscripts, against the background of the rapidly transforming society of the late British Empire and the new aspirations that women had started to develop towards the turn of the century.

Abstract:
Teachers are at the core of society’s education and literacy, making them an indispensable workforce. While the profession offers a noble cause, it is not without challenges and difficulties. The institution where they belong is expected to provide them with the necessary support so they can perform their job well. This study looks into the relationship between the organizational commitment levels and job satisfaction of 29 regular-fulltime faculty of the College of Business Administration of the Negros Oriental State University main campus. A survey questionnaire was administered to measure their affective, continuance, and normative organizational commitment levels, and job satisfaction. Through Pearson’s r, it was found that there is no statistically significant relationship between affective and continuance commitment to job satisfaction. Although not strong, there is a recorded significant relationship between normative commitment and job satisfaction. The results showed that organizational commitment is not a strong driver for job satisfaction and vice versa. Several factors may affect this result such as the demographic profile of the respondents and their innate interest in the profession. As the study has its limitations, further research can be conducted to explore other factors of job satisfaction and influences in the organizational commitment.

Abstract:
It would, of course, be possible in the case of a man such as Sir Ralph Turner to devote an entire lecture to an extended obituary. Several full obituaries have already been published, but a brief notice of some salient features of his life and career are still, perhaps, in place in a Memorial Lecture in his honour. Ralph Lilley Turner was born in 1888 and educated at The Perse School, Cambridge, and at Christ's College, Cambridge. He entered the Indian Education Service and during the First World War he served with the Gurkha Rifles. After the war he was Professor of Indian Linguistics at Benares University, until he was appointed to the Chair of Sanskrit in London. In 1937 he became Director of the School of Oriental Studies, soon to become the School of Oriental and African Studies, until 1957. He was knighted in 1950, and from 1957 he spent an active retirement working almost until his death in 1983 on the final stages of the supplements to his life's work, theComparative Dictionary of the Indo-Aryan Languages.
