Abstract:
This thesis is an investigation of the relationship between the mass media and urban space, which takes as its object of analysis the concentration of newspaper buildings on Park Row in New York in the second half of the nineteenth century. By analysing five major New York newspapers and the architecture which housed them, commonalities in form, style and structure are revealed which are based on notions of display, spectacle, advertisement, order, and sensationalism. As daily newspapers achieved greater status in nineteenth century cities, their buildings increasingly took on Italian Renaissance, French Second Empire and Gothic forms, and became among the first skyscrapers in America. This thesis documents the designs and decisions of the construction process, as well as the interpretations and justifications of the chosen styles that were offered in the newspapers, in order to explain the form and meaning of this important phenomenon of American media history.

Architecture occurs when you as a designer create spaces in which people can experience a whole range of emotions, learn something not only about architecture, but about themselves and go away feeling more in tune with what is around them. I wanted to convey an attitude about architecture: the idea of how architecture can express the function of a building. In this case the government of the Town and Village of Ossining, New York.

Abstract:
This thesis is an exercise in responsibility regarding my actions as an architect. It is based upon the belief that architecture is a product conveying culture. While architecture can convey culture, it also has the potential to shape and facilitate change q in culture. Therefore, one can view the architect as more than a technician, making architecture stand and work properly, or an artist, concerned with the aesthetic/architectonic qualities of architecture, but rather as an active entity who can both convey and change cultural values through the built environment. The struggle in this thesis regarding responsibility has been to make my role more than an active entity in culture, but a consciously active entity in culture. Since I have long viewed culture as a political product and one's existence in culture as a political act, then one’s responsibility as an architect could be to make architecture as the conscious embodiment of a political ideology. For me, feminism is the political ideology, and Liberative Architecture is the conscious embodiment.

Abstract:
Part of the struggle of making architecture is reconciling its various realities; as it exists as pure idea and its transformation into a ‘thing’ existing in the world. Modern times pose a new challenge as well. As Jacob Bronowski has said, the dilemma is no longer to find structure for material but to find material for structure. Therefore, the ‘imposed idea’ is important as an impetus for Architecture to exist. In this project the imposed idea was the use of a series of parallel walls, vertical planes, that delimit the place for dwelling. In the first drawings, an attempt was made to use color as the substantiation or realization of space. The line drawing remains as a descriptive adjunct to the expressive drawing. They become together; the idea vs. its realization each describing the ‘thing’ in its evolving reality.

Abstract:
This study sought to identify factors that influence the adoption of Web-based courses by State University of New York faculty members engaged in professional development and preparation of teachers. The central question of this research study was: What factors and concerns affect State University of New York teacher education faculty members' decisions regarding development and implementation of Web-based courses? The study addressed issues raised during earlier research efforts on the objections, problems, or barriers to the use of distance learning during the academic preparation of teachers. Earlier studies revealed technical barriers surrounding the perceived reliability or unreliability of hardware components or software available to instructors. Non-technical problems centered on professional objections to online courses. Job security, intellectual property rights, course control, and the constant requirement to learn or maintain new skills were listed as concerns by faculty. Implementation of Web-based courses also required a training period for faculty. Teacher education programs found within the State University of New York were selected as the focus of this study due to the availability of a structured resource for faculty seeking to develop and present online courses to their students. State University of New York faculty respondents in these programs were experienced educators who viewed Web-based teaching within the context of pre-service teacher preparation as important or very important but were concerned about "quality" issues such as student discussion or interaction, the suitability of course content, and concerns that more time is needed to prepare online courses without any corresponding support or policy guidance from institutional administration. Few courses were offered to pre-service teachers in the setting that was studied. Many respondents viewed the use of Web-mediated instruction as inconsistent with the requirements of pre-service classroom observation or other efforts to develop teaching skills. Several respondents reported that they had no online teaching experience but indicated some exposure to online teaching resources. This would suggest that hybrid courses (a mix of classroom contact supported by Web-based classes) should be explored.

Abstract:
The Student Health Services is located in Henderson Hall, a complex consisting of several buildings constructed at various times. Three other departments share this complex. Because of inadequate space and a building layout which does not easily accommodate the Health Services’ function, a study was completed to determine needs of the facility, and a final design solution was produced to supply the needs of the University, the Health Services and the community. Advantages of the existing location as well as the university master plan indicated keeping the facility in the same area. But problems created by the layout and shape of the present facility necessitate a new facility designed to increase both efficient handling of patient and staff flow as well as creating a positive image. The facility should communicate that it is a place for healing rather than a place for the sick. The new building ties into the existing complex creating a boundary between the University and the community, and creates a front facing the new student activities building. The original residence of the first College president will be restored to its original scale and identity by the removal of its present two additions.

Abstract:
The purpose of this project dissertation was to research, create and assess a hypothetical two-year musical theatre/music theater (MT) curriculum to serve as a model for future implementation at community colleges. As one of the fastest growing and most prolific forms of popular entertainment today, the 21st Century musical is uniquely poised to depict artistically and culturally diverse narratives. Vividly reflecting the sociopolitical context surrounding their production (Kenrick, 2017, p. 2), both new musicals and musical revivals, viewed through a more contemporary lens, may permit increasing employment opportunities for historically minoritized persons. As the relatively new baccalaureate credential in MT increasingly becomes the baseline criteria for entrance to the MT industry, competitive conservatory programs continue to face difficulty in matriculating more inclusive freshman cohorts. The American community college has a long tradition of supporting demographically diverse populations as well as “atypical” learners such as the differently abled, adults returning to school, veterans and first-generation college attendees in the pursuit of vocational training, terminal credentials in the form of a certificate or associate degree, or, increasingly, students aiming to transfer to four-year degree programs. However, accredited, two-year programs dedicated to the study and practice of MT remain virtually nonexistent in the United States, and, due to the relative newness of the discipline as an area of scholarly interest, have little precedent or pedagogic research to guide best practices. To address this need, this project created a two-year program for MT study according to the practical restraints of the State University of New York and Dutchess Community College’s collective guidelines for curricular development, as well as the dual recommendations of the National Association of Schools of Music and National Association of Schools of Theatre. All stages of the project design were subject to peer review by a varied panel of tertiary MT educators and MT practitioners, tasked to assess academic and artistic potential of such a program if formally implemented. Upon conclusion of both formative and summative evaluations, a series of general guidelines for the development of similar programs were generated to inform similar future initiatives within both two-year and four-year settings.

Oral health is crucial to overall health and a focus of the U.S. Health Center program, which provides preventive dental services in medically underserved communities. Dental hygiene is an oral health profession whose practice is focused on dental disease prevention and oral health promotion. Variations in the practice and regulation of dental hygiene has been demonstrated to influence access to dental care at a state level; restrictive policies are associated lower rates of access to care. Understanding whether and to what extent policy variations affect availability and access to dental care and the oral health of medically underserved communities served by grantees of the U.S. Health Center program is the focus of this study. This longitudinal study examines dental service utilization at 1,135 health center grantees that received community health center funding from 2004 to 2011. The Dental Hygiene Professional Practice Index (DHPPI) was used as an indicator of the state policy environment. The influence of grantee and state level characteristics are also considered. Mixed effects models were used to account for correlations introduced by the multiple hierarchical structure of the data. Key findings of this study demonstrate that state policy environment is a predictor of the availability and access to dental care and the oral health status of medically underserved communities that received care at a grantee of the U.S. Health Center program. Grantees located in states with highly restrictive policy environments were 73% less likely to deliver dental services and, those that do, provided care to 7% fewer patients than those grantees located in states with the most supportive policy environments. Population’s served by grantees from the most restrictive states received less preventive care and had greater restorative and emergency dental care needs. State policy environment is a predictor of availability and access to dental care and the oral health status of medically underserved communities. This study has important implications for policy at the federal, state, and local levels. Findings demonstrate the need for policy and advocacy efforts at all levels, especially within states with restrictive policy environments.
