Abstract:
PurposeThe purpose of this study is to assess the appraisal of records at the University of Witwatersrand and the University of Venda. Furthermore, the study intends to recommend appraisal of records to recognize African culture, reviewing records management policy to include an element on the appraisal of records, raise awareness on the appraisal of records, capacity building and develop electronic records management strategy to appraise records.Design/methodology/approachThis study is based on the qualitative research technique. The research approach is a multiple case study comparing the previously advantaged and disadvantaged universities in South Africa.FindingsThe study found that archives and records management legislation, archives and records management policy, re-appraisal of records, capacity building are essential for the appraisal of university records. Lack of appropriate appraisal theory and strategy by the University of Witwatersrand and the University of Venda leads to a loss of institutional memory.Research limitations/implicationsThis research is limited to the University of Witwatersrand and the University of Venda. These two institutions are a sample of the state of archiving in South Africa.Originality/valueThere is very little, if any, research on the appraisal of South African universities' records. The outcome of this research will benefit universities that are seeking to develop and implement appraisal strategies.

Tlakula, Tintswalo Pascalis, and Madeleine Fombad. "The use of electronic resources by undergraduate students at the University of Venda, South Africa." Electronic Library 35, no. 5 (2017): 861–81. http://dx.doi.org/10.1108/el-06-2016-0140.

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose This paper aims to establish the level of use of the electronic resources at the University of Venda, which is one of the previously disadvantaged universities in South Africa. It identifies the different electronic resources used at the university, determines the level of awareness and training in the use of these resources and suggests ways in which electronic resources may be enhanced. The rapid changes in the information and communication technology (ICTs) have influenced service delivery in academic libraries in terms of how information is gathered, accessed, retrieved and used. Hence, electronic resources are invaluable research tools in academic libraries in the twenty-first century. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative research methodology was adopted, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with each participant to get in-depth information. The target population was all third-year students registered with the School of Human and Social Sciences at the University of Venda. The third year undergraduate students from this particular school where chosen because statistics revealed that these students where ranked among the top in the use of computers. Findings The findings revealed that the level of usage of these resources by undergraduate students is elementary and limited to SABINET and EBSCO host. Undergraduate student’s level of awareness of the different electronic resources is low. They confused electronic resources to Web-based internet sources. It also revealed that the level of awareness and training in the use of these resources is still generic, as training is mostly a once off orientation at the first year. Research limitations/implications This paper focuses on third year undergraduate students who were using computers because the researchers were interested in finding out whether students using computers were also using electronic resources. It excluded other profiles such as age, gender and computer usage behaviour of electronic resources. Practical implications Adequate use and knowledge of electronic resources at universities is instrumental towards realisation of the country’s ICT Strategy and the outcome-based education (OBE) model of teaching movement. Suggestions are made to the university, the university library, university librarians and the Library Association of South Africa on how to enhance the use of electronic resources. Originality/value It establishes the level of use of electronic resources in one of South African historically disadvantaged universities, a point of contact to other previously South African disadvantaged universities and make suggestions on how electronic resources may be enhanced. It adds to the body of knowledge on the use of electronic resources in academic libraries in South African universities.

Abstract:
The University of Venda(Univen) distributed tablets to students for facilitating and enhancing their studies. However, the provision of tablet PCs to students may not be a panacea for quality learning, especially to technological disadvantaged rural student population. The aim of study was to investigate the use of digital mobile devices for enhancing teaching and learning at the Univen. The research questions focused on determining the current level of use of mobile devices, how they can be used effectively for teaching and learning. Mixed methods approach was applied with data being solicited from a convenient sample of students, lecturers and an IT technician. The results of the study indicated that many students and lecturers are active and have higher perceptions of mobile devices usage. The results of the study are to be used to explicate and advance the integration of the mobile devices for promoting learning and teaching accomplishments. The findings clearly showed that mobile devices have a positive impact on the academic experience. The results also indicate that there is a gradual acceptance of the Learners Management Systems (Blackboard) by both academics and students. The digital mobile devices are eventually enhancing teaching and learning at Univen.

Abstract:
This research investigated on the perceived benefits and barriers to the application of mobile and social networking technologies in South African Higher Learning Institutions (HLIs). A quantitative orientation was used in carrying out the study through self-administered questionnaires and a descriptive quantitative method of analysis was applied. The research population consisted of some students and lecturers from University of Venda (Univen) and University of Limpopo (UL). The research results showed that indeed HLIs in South Africa enjoy some benefits using mobile and social networking technologies which makes students and lecturers participate in virtual learning. The results also confirmed that HLIs in South Africa are faced with various barriers affecting mobile and social networking technology adaptations. Five noteworthy barriers identified were connectivity, security problems, small screens, lack of equipment and technology and lack of training among users. Benefits which were identified included, improved participation, improved communication between students and lecturers and enhancement of teaching and learning processes in HLIs. The research recommended HLIs to be aware of the major Learning Management Systems (LMS) which they should use together with social networking platforms to successfully gain full benefits of using mobile and social networking technologies in the education sector.

Abstract:
This commentary looks at the last three articles on the special issue, those by Velda McCune, Evangelia Karagiannopoulou and SueHallam and Hazel Francis. The first two papers focus on exploring students’ understanding. Velda McCune explores learner identities and the will to understand of undergraduate bioscience students. Evagelia Karagiannopoulou analyses the effect of in-class experiences and the nature of examinations on understanding of final-year psychology students. The third paper by Sue Hallam and Hazel Francis deals indirectly with understanding and focuses on analysing students’ conceptions of the nature of argument. Skills of argumentation are a crucial part of critical thinking skills which, in turn, have been shown to be related to the deep approach to learning.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this study to investigate the relationships between South Africa (SA) universities and universities surrounding communities (USC) for preserving community histories and serve the universities’ mandate to support their local communities and support universities’ teaching and scholarship. Design/methodology/approach The study used a multiple case study approach through interviews. The population of the study comprised representatives from selected universities and their USC. Findings The findings revealed a lack of effective relationships between universities and USC to preserve communities’ histories. Hence, the communities’ archives are tools for teaching and scholarship. Relations between universities and USC are to be built on trust. Accountability and transparency are to be considered by both parties. Research limitations/implications The research is limited to selected SA universities, namely, University of Venda, Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, Pretoria and SA and USC. The findings are applicable to all SA universities and USC. Practical implications The relationship between universities and USC has a practical impact on the National archives of South Africa (NARSSA) to collect communities archives because it is in conflict with the mandate of NARSSA. The National Archives’ Act 43 of 1996 obliged NARSSA to collect and preserve communities’ archives on behalf of societies. Social implications Lack of universities and USC can lead to the loss of communities histories or archives. Originality/value This paper appears to be the first to research the relationship between SA universities and USC.

Palavras-chave: Território; Tráfico; Drogas; Rede.ABSTRACTUnderstanding the processes that occur in space requires several factors that help gather information that spreads throughout your organization. Then, from the problematic of drug trafficking in the university city Prof. José da Silveira Netto (UFPA), where this activity ends up exerting new dynamics on space, having the potential to be considered an parallel agent to the State, the article aims to make a theoretical approximation of the concepts that permeate drug trafficking on campus, in order to understand the spatial dynamics of this practice, aiming the construction of a network of social relations. Thus, the paper intends to collaborate for studies related to the concept of territory geared to the issue of public safety, aimed at research in the field of Geography and/or related sciences, where the research element is placed in the urban context. As methodological procedures, two stages were used: bibliographical review of authors that deal with the social relations that involve space, materializing the territory, being the main concept and, from then on, to relate the own to the activity of sale and drug use at university; fieldwork to better understand the reality of the area of study, and thus, to use all the theoretical discussion about this reality. Therefore, a study of drug trafficking in UFPA has several challenges, since the issue of drug sales and consumption on campus is an activity that many people know to occur, but few make any discussion about the subject, lack of debate to arrive at actions that deal with this problem more seriously, and seek to make possible the coexistence of people who attend and use these spaces. Keywords: Territory; Traffic; Drugs; Network.RESUMENComprender los procesos que hacen con que no hay espacio necesario de varios factores que ayudan a reunir información que se lanzan en su organización. I would argue that history students should understand that the whole body of historical writing consists of interpretations of the past. They should be able to analyse a wide variety of texts and form their own opinions on a historical topic, and should be able to construct a coherent argument, using evidence to support their opinion. In doing so, they should be actively aware that their argument is no more “true” than that offered by any other historian. It is as much a product of their personal biography and the social formation in which they live as of the evidence used in its construction. Even this evidence is the product of other personal biographies and other social forces.

Abstract:
This paper presents a sustainable development project in which University of Virginia students collaborated with University of Venda faculty, Global Sustainability Club students, and local community members to address water problems in a village in the Venda region of the Limpopo Province, South Africa. The cohort’s goal was to implement a sustainable and contextually appropriate water purification and distribution system. The authors present the design and constructed process for a slow sand filtration system intended to provide clean drinking water to most households in the community. They present and analyze the successes, failures, and ethical dilemmas encountered throughout project execution. Also, the authors assess the project based on three evaluation criteria for service learning projects and explore possibilities for follow-up through the collaboration between the University of Virginia and the University of Venda. The paper ends with a reflection examining aspects of engineering community engagement projects including site assessments prior to project implementation, project timeframes, and crosscultural institutional collaborations.

"First Analysis from a Phase 1/2 Study of Venetoclax in Combination with Daratumumab and Dexamethasone, +/- Bortezomib, in Patients with Relapsed/Refractory Multiple Myeloma." Blood 134, Supplement_1 (2019): 925. http://dx.doi.org/10.1182/blood-2019-124407.

Abstract:
Background: Novel and more effective therapies for multiple myeloma (MM) have led to increasing overall survival, but most patients (pts) will eventually relapse or become refractory (RR). The proteasome inhibitor (PI) bortezomib (V), the anti-CD38 antibody daratumumab (D), and dexamethasone (d) are key agents for combination therapy in first-line and RR settings. Venetoclax (Ven) is a highly selective, potent, oral BCL-2 inhibitor that induces apoptosis in BCL-2-dependent MM cells in vitro. Encouraging clinical efficacy has been observed with Ven monotherapy in t(11;14) pts, and with VenV in pts irrespective of disease genetic background. In view of MM intraclonal heterogeneity, the addition of D to Ven +/- PI is postulated to further enhance antitumor activity of Ven-based regimens in RRMM. Methods: M15-654 (NCT03314181) is an ongoing Phase 1/2, nonrandomized, multicenter study of combination therapy consisting of VenDd +/- V in pts with RRMM. The primary objective is to evaluate the safety, tolerability, and preliminary efficacy of VenDd +/- V. In Part 1, VenDd was evaluated in t(11;14) MM pts who received ≥1 prior line of therapy that included a PI and an immunomodulatory drug (IMiD). In Part 2, VenDVd was evaluated in MM pts irrespective of t(11;14) status who were non-refractory to PIs and received 1 - 3 prior lines of therapy. Each regimen was evaluated in a dose escalation and expansion phase. In each part, Ven dose escalation was initiated at 400 mg daily (QD) and escalated to 800 mg QD if acceptable safety and tolerability were observed. Escalation cohorts had ≥3 pts, and escalation decisions were based on a Bayesian optimal interval design and the number of pts with a dose limiting toxicity (DLT). In Part 1, cycles (C) were 28-day: Ven QD + D 16 mg/kg intravenous (IV) (C1, 2: Days 1, 8, 15, 22; C3 - 6: Days 1, 15; C7+: Day 1) + d 40 mg total weekly. In Part 2, C1 - 8 were 21-day, C9+ were 28-day: Ven QD + D 16 mg/kg IV (C1 - 3: Days 1, 8, 15; C4+: Day 1) + V 1.3 mg/m2 subcutaneous (C1 - 8, Days 1, 4, 8, 11) + d 20 mg (C1 - 3: Days 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11, 12, 15; C4 - 8, Days 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11, 12) and 40 mg weekly for C9+. Results: As of 13 May 2019, 48 pts were enrolled. Of 24 t(11;14) pts treated in Part 1 with VenDd, median age was 63 (range, 51 - 76), median prior lines of therapy was 2.5 (range, 1 - 8), 14 (58%) had ISS II/III disease, and 24 (100%) received both prior PI and IMiD (46% refractory to PI, 71% refractory to IMiD, 42% double refractory). Of 24 pts treated in Part 2 with VenDVd, median age was 64 (range, 41 - 80), median prior lines of therapy was 1 (range, 1 - 3), 14 (58%) had ISS II/III disease, and 6 (25%) were t(11;14). Twenty-two (92%) pts received prior PI, 17 (71%) received prior IMiD (33% refractory), and 15 (63%) received prior PI + IMiD. The most common adverse events (AEs; VenDd/VenDVd) were fatigue (54%/21%), diarrhea (50%/42%), nausea (33%/38%), insomnia (29%/42%), cough (21%/8%), headache (21%/4%), upper respiratory tract infection (21%/17%), constipation (8%/33%), infusion related reaction (8%/33%), peripheral neuropathy (4%/25%), and dyspepsia (4%/21%). Grade 3/4 AEs were seen in 63%/54% of pts. The most common Grade 3/4 AEs in pts receiving VenDd were neutropenia (13%), fatigue, hyperglycemia, and hypertension (8% each); in pts receiving VenDVd, the most common were insomnia (17%), diarrhea, and thrombocytopenia (8% each). There were 6 pts with infection-related Grade 3/4 AEs (3 VenDd, 3 VenDVd). No AEs of tumor lysis syndrome were observed. Eleven pts had a serious AE (5 VenDd, 6 VenDVd), the most common being pyrexia in 3 pts. One pt treated with VenDd had a DLT of febrile neutropenia, and 1 pt treated with VenDVd died due to progressive disease. No infection-related deaths were seen. Pharmacokinetic analyses demonstrated that addition of D and V did not impact Ven exposure. Median time on study is 3.6 months (m; 8.1 m escalation, 2.8 m expansion) in the VenDd arm and 3.1 m (5.8 m escalation, 2.4 m expansion) in the VenDVd arm. The objective response rate (ORR) was 92% and 88% in pts receiving VenDd and VenDVd, respectively (Table). Conclusions: This first analysis of pts treated with VenDd +/- V demonstrate a tolerable safety profile with encouraging efficacy, notably among t(11;14) pts treated with VenDd who had an ORR of 92%. No new safety signals were observed. Although the study is currently on partial clinical hold, enrolled pts continue to be followed. Analysis will be updated at presentation. Abstract:
AbstractBackgroundThe acquisition of a medical professorship represents a significant step in a physician’s academic career. The responsibility as well as the honor and the associated obligations are significant; however, the requirements to become a medical professor vary in Germany.ObjectiveWe analyzed the variable requirements for prospective medical professors in Germany, with special focus on the tenure track concept and the U.S. system.MethodsBased on an online research, we queried German medical faculty regulations to obtain a medical professorship within Germany.ResultsWe analyzed 35 German universities. On average, 11 publications are required after “venia legendi” to meet professorship (apl) prerequisites (median x̅ = 10, max = 24, min = 6, n = 16), whereas 6 publications with first or last authorship are required on average (x̅ = 6, max = 16, min = 4, n = 26). In most German universities, it takes an average of 4 years after gaining habilitation to apply for a professorship (x̅ = 5 years, max = 6 years, min = 2 years). Candidates for university chair positions, however, can shorten this period by an average of 38%.DiscussionIn the German academic system, the prerequisites to gain a professorship differ among universities. Due to different scientific cooperation and exchange programs, research and academic activities have reached an intense international exchange level. Yet there is no international or even national standardization, quality assurance, and comparability to gain a medical professorship.

Abstract:
Background: Presented is a case of persistent left superior vena cava draining into the right atrium through coronary sinus and finally opens into right atrium. Abnormalities of the vascular system are more commonly seen due to its importance in circulation. Persistent left superior vena cava is rare but important congenital vascular anomaly. It results when the left superior cardinal vein caudal to the innominate vein fails to regress. The venous anomaly of a persistent left superior vena cava (PLSVC) affects 0.3%–0.5% of the general population. Normally the superior vena cava is a single vascular structure formed by the union of right and left brachiocephalic veins which are in turn formed by the union of internal jugular and subclavian veins of corresponding side, draining the head and neck as well as the superior extremity.
Aims and Objective: To evaluate the accuracy of persistent left superior vena cava and to find out the opening of PLSVC and formations of both SVC.
Materials and Methods: During routine dissection of Thorax, we have opened the thoracic cage and take out the Heart. during that we found separate SVC and then we did the study on this PLSVC in the Department of Anatomy, Jaipur National University Institute for Medical Sciences and Research Centre (JNUIMSRC) Jaipur and National Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (NIMS & R).
Results: We found persistent left superior vena cava in two cadavers out of 30 cadavers (6.66%) one was 64-year-old male cadaver and another 72-year-old male cadaver. Both the vena cavae were formed as of brachiocephalic veins of the corresponding side. The persistent left superior vena cava opened into the enlarged coronary sinus that drained into the right atrium between the opening of inferior vena cava and right atrio-ventricular orifice.
Conclusion: It has important clinical implications in certain clinical interventions. It may complicate placementof cardiac catheters or pacemaker leads.

Abstract:
Since its establishment two and half decades ago, the School of Management Sciences at the University of Venda (UNIVEN) has produced hundreds of Bachelor of Commerce (BCOM) graduates for the South African work force. Yet the School has had no formal feedback from its graduates regarding the relevance, usefulness, strengths and weakness of its BCOM programmes. The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of the BCOM (Accounting) programme on job prospects of UNIVEN graduates. A structured questionnaire was sent to a sample of 61 graduates of UNIVEN’s BCOMA programme through the Snowball technique of tracing survey respondents. The questionnaire sought the participating graduates’ opinions on several aspects of their educational experience at Univen including adequacy of the training and employability, among others. The study used the IBM SPSS version 21 to analyse the study data. The key findings of the study suggest that the components of the BCOMA programme that need major improvement to increase the employability of graduates are training in practical skills, using computers in Accounting training, as well as improvement in teaching and delivery methods. The study also found that modules offered in the BCOM programme were relevant to the graduate’s job needs.

Abstract:
This article explores the contribution of scientists, who’s scientific and teaching activities were associated with the Department of International Law of the University of St. Volodymyr in Kiev, in the development of problems of the law of war. In the XIX century began the process of codification of laws and customs of war, which is carried out in two directions – the protection of war victims (i.e., the Geneva law, which began with the Geneva Convention for the Amelioration of the Condition of the Wounded in Armies in the Field 1864) and legal regulation of limits on methods and means of waging war (i.e. the Hague Law, which began with documents such as the Liber Code 1863, the St. Petersburg Declaration Renouncing the Use, in Time of War, of Explosive Projectiles Under 400 Grammes Weight 1868 and the draft Brussels Declaration Concerning the Laws and Customs of War 1874), which eventually led to adoption of the Hague Conventions of 1899 and 1907. It is not surprising, therefore, that the international legal doctrine of the nineteenth century in many countries has paid considerable attention to the study of issues related to the laws and customs of war. International lawyers, whose scientific activity was connected with St. Volodymyr's University in Kyiv, were no exception. All of them have published works on the general question of the relationship between war and international law, or the legal regulation of limits on methods and means of waging war and protecting the victims of war. This topic also dominates in their dissertation research, in particular the dissertation pro venia legendi by R. Baziner, master's dissertation by N. Rennenkampf, master's and doctoral dissertations by O. Eikhel’man and P Bogaevskii. Among the topics that were the subject of scientific research of pre-revolutionary Kyiv international lawyers can be identified general issues of the relationship between war and international law (V. Nezabitovskii), the law of naval warfare, in particular the inviolability of private property during naval war (N. Rennenkampf, R. Baziner), legal status of prisoners of war (O. Eichelman), rights and responsibilities of the occupying state (O. Eikhel’man), legal issues of the Red Cross (P. Bogaevskii), legal content and history of adoption Geneva Convention for the Amelioration of the Condition of the Wounded in Armies in the Field of August 22, 1864 (P. Bogaevskii).

Abstract:
Student affairs records are essential components in addressing basic functionalities in the university environment as they serve diverse purposes such as the life of a student on the campus. However, these records are often not preserved properly especially at universities in rural settings. This study assessed student affairs records, with consideration to preservation strategy at the University of Venda in South Africa. Data were collected through interviews with ten purposively selected staff members from student affairs division. The key findings reveal that while the university has an archive service within the library, the responsibility of preserving student records lies with records management division that resides within the registrar’s office. However, there is no preservation strategy for student affairs records. It is concluded that collaboration between student affairs and records and archives department enhance to collect the student affairs records. A comprehensive study on the management of student affairs records in South African universities is recommended.

Abstract:
This study focuses on the determinants of employee performance at the University of Venda, premised on the extent to which stakeholders are involved in the strategic planning of the institution. The aim of the study was to establish the effect of stakeholders involvement in the strategic planning of the University of Venda and to determine how different stakeholders are involved in the strategic planning and ultimate implication of their involvement - or lack of involvement - on the overall performance of the institution. Using a survey approach, this study revealed that the process of strategic planning is absolutely dominated by the management cadre, thereby sending the other stakeholders into the doldrums. In the practical sense (as indicated by the findings), those who are directly affected by the strategic plan are least involved in the process of the planning. Because of the lack of involvement, the majority of the stakeholders became de-motivated, culminating in their lack-lustre approach toward the implementation of the orchestrated plan. The resultant lack of buy-in by the affected stakeholders - essentially the internal stakeholders (staff members and the student community) - lays credence to the paucity of the process and the resultant poor performance on a number of indicators.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Improving the cryopreservation technique for indigenous fowl semen may contribute to the development of cryogene banks in South Africa. The goal was to identify a cryoprotectant among dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), ethylene glycol (EG), and propanediol (PND) that is compatible with survival after freezing of Venda cock spermatozoa. Six Venda cocks were used for semen collection. The abdominal massaging technique was applied for semen collection from cocks. Individual ejaculates were diluted with modified Kobidil+ (mK+) extender (extender A) at ratio of 1:2 (v/v) before freezing, and equilibrated for 2 h. Semen was diluted again at a ratio of 1:1 (v/v) with mK+ plus 8% DMSO, EG, and PND (extender B) and equilibrated for 2 h at 5°C. Semen were then transferred into 0.25-mL plastic straws and placed into a programmable freezer (Planer Kryosave). The temperature of the chamber was decreased in a stepwise manner, from 5°C at a rate of 1°C min–1 until it reached the target temperature of –20°C. Finally, the straws were exposed to liquid nitrogen (LN2) vapor and plunged into LN2 (–196°C). The semen straws were stored in an LN2 tank at –196°C. After 1 week, frozen semen straws were thawed at 5°C for evaluation of spermatozoa survivability and motility rate at 0, 30, 60, and 90 min, using contrast microscopy (20× magnification). Data were analyzed by ANOVA. Spermatozoa live and motility rates were greater before freezing (Table 1) in all groups. There was no significance difference between DMSO and EG with regard to live and motility rates. However, the lowest rates of live and motility spermatozoa were recorded in the PND group. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that the cryopreservation process reduces sperm quality and propanediol was not suitable for cryopreserving Venda cock spermatozoa. Table 1.Comparison of three CPA on cryopreservation of Venda cock semen This study was funded by the South African National Department of Agriculture, ARC, DST-PDP (RT19000), and National Research Foundation (NRF, Grant. no. RT21 and 24000).

Abstract:
In contrast with numerous references in world literature linking soft drinking water with an increased prevalence of hypertension, degenerative vascular diseases and cardiovascular disease, research done by the Hans Snyckers Institute at Tshikundamalema in Venda would indicate the opposite. The drinking water in this remote area is extremely soft but the traditional living people of the area appear to be free of these diseases.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This paper presents the extension of a sustainable water purification project conducted by engineering students from the University of Venda in South Africa and the University of Virginia in the United States. Through collaboration with faculty at both universities and a community in rural South Africa, the student team facilitated the repair of a water filtration system installed the previous year. While the team had the specific goal to repair the system, they entered into this commitment with an open-ended approach to problem solving that drew heavily on community engagement and participation. The following paper describes the technical details of the project and the process by which the community was enabled to take the lead in the assessment, design and implementation of a sustainable repair to their water filtration system.
