Abstract:
✓ After retiring from the presidency of the United States, Thomas Jefferson concentrated his latter years on establishing The University of Virginia. He personally undertook the design of the buildings and directed the early days of the institution. The Rotunda, with its famous Dome Room and outside porticos, continues to receive critical acclaim for its architectural design.

Abstract:
If you got into a train at Euston, and started travelling northwards towards Liverpool, it would be a great surprise if you finished up in Tunbridge Wells. I had the same sense of an impossible change of direction when I learned about Virginia Bottomley's early life and subsequent career. Her mother was a Conservative Education councillor, elected after Virginia Bottomley became an MP, but her uncle was a Labour Cabinet minister and she herself was the Labour candidate in her school's mock election. Then, in the hippy, radical, mid to late Sixties, she went on to read sociology at the University of Essex, surely the most radical of all the university campuses. After graduation, she went to work for Frank Field at the Child Poverty Action Group. Then on to the London School of Economics to train as a social worker, before employment as a full-time social worker for 10 years, first at Brixton and then at the Camberwell Child Guidance Unit. How on earth could all that lead to a safe Conservative seat in Surrey and then to two Cabinet posts in a Tory government, first as Secretary of State for Health and then as Secretary of State for National Heritage?

Abstract:
Abstract:
Metabolic Syndrome (MetS) contributes to the development of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and type II diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Few studies have investigated the MetS risk of young adults (18–24 years old). This study aims to determine the prevalence of MetS in Appalachian and non-Appalachian students attending West Virginia University. The prevalence of MetS in this population was 15%. There was no difference in MetS prevalence between male students and female students (18.8% males and 11.1% females, p-value = 0.30), or between Appalachian students and non-Appalachian students (17.7% Appalachian and 10.0% non-Appalachian, p-value = 0.33). Identification of MetS early in life is needed in order to reduce the onset of chronic disease. Therefore, implementing a screening process to identify at-risk young adults will help tailor more effective behavioral interventions.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Mid-Atlantic Twin Registry (MATR) is a population-based registry of more than 60,000 twins primarily born or living in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Researchers may utilize the MATR for administration of research services, including study recruitment, data or sample (e.g., DNA) collection, archival dataset creation, as well as data collection through mailed, phone or online surveys. In addition, the MATR houses the MATR Repository, with over 1700 DNA samples primarily from whole blood available for researchers interested in DNA genotyping. For over 40 years MATR twins have participated in research studies with investigators from a range of scientific disciplines and institutions. These studies, which have resulted in numerous publications, explored diverse topics, including substance use, smoking behaviors, developmental psychopathology, bullying, children’s health, cardiovascular disease, cancer, the human microbiome, epigenetics of aging, children of twins and sleep homeostasis. Researchers interested in utilizing twins are encouraged to contact the MATR to discuss potential research opportunities.
