Abstract:
Purpose Web-based courses are a practical way to engage in meaningful discussions with learners from a diverse set of communities. By gathering online to learn about a topic, learners can form communities that transcend geographic and political boundaries. This paper aims to investigate a partnership between the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UW-Madison) and Wisconsin Library Services, which brought open access online learning to thousands of lifelong learners around the state of Wisconsin. “Changing Weather and Climate in the Great Lakes Region”, a massive open online course the UW-Madison launched in 2015, paired a regional focus with face-to-face discussions at 21 public libraries to deepen learners’ personal connections to the subject matter. Through strategic partnership, targeted course development and marketing of events, intimate local discussion sessions and statewide events provided fora in which Wisconsin residents would explore changing weather and climate with university faculty, staff and students. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses a case study approach and firsthand interview feedback from librarians, library staff and university faculty and staff who were leading the effort. Findings This paper explores the lessons learned and practical implications from the project and offers insight into libraries and universities looking to engage specific communities in non-credit online learning projects into the future. Originality/value This effort was a first of its kind partnership for the University and the State of Wisconsin.

AbstractAstronomical observatory publications include the work of local astronomers from observatories around the world and are traditionally exchanged between observatories through their libraries. However, large collections of these publications appear to be rare and are often incomplete. In order to assess the unique properties of the collections, we compare observatories present in our own collection from the university at Copenhagen, Denmark with two collections from the USA: one at the Woodman Library at Wisconsin-Madison and another at the Dudley Observatory in Loudonville, New York.

The Data and Information Services Center (DISC), formerly known as the Data and Program Library Services (DPLS) has provided learning, teaching and research support to students, staff and faculty in social sciences at the University of Wisconsin-Madison for 50 years. What changes have our organization, collections, and services experienced? How has DISC evolved with the advancement of technology? What role does DISC play in the current and future landscape of social science data services on our campus and beyond? This paper gives answers to these questions and recommends a few simple steps in adding social science data services in academic libraries.

On February 29, 2008, I had the opportunity to sit in on a lecture about the future of academic libraries and the communities they serve. The picture presented was one that had seemed to become formulaic in library discussions: kids don’t want to read anymore, they will continue not to want to read, and on the rare occasion that they do read, it will be on their phones. During this lecture, I thought back to a journal I had discovered in graduate school at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. Abstract:
Despite the short remaining time to rescue unique cultural and personal materials stored on many twentieth- and early twenty-first-century audiovisual and digital storage media, realistic rescue options are starkly limited. Building a rescue apparatus in house, especially to archival standards, requires significant expertise and expense and is often of limited continuing use. Outsourcing digital capture of these materials overwhelms the resources of even well-funded academic libraries and archives, never mind public libraries, small archives, and local historical societies. To address this problem realistically, the University of Wisconsin-Madison Information School has built and documented an in-house rescue installation called RADD (Recover Analog and Digital Data) as well as two self-contained, portable, and shippable rescue kits: PROUD (Portable Recovery of Unique Data) for digital materials and PRAVDA (Portably Reformat Audio and Video to Digital from Analog) for audio and video. All three units are actively rescuing cultural heritage materials, as well as serving training and outreach functions.

Abstract:
Abstract In conjunction with the FutureTruck collegiate design competition, The University of Wisconsin - Madison has integrated an all aluminum frame into their four-wheel drive, charge sustaining, parallel hybrid-electric sport utility vehicle. The base vehicle is a 2000 Chevrolet Suburban nicknamed the “Moollennium” and weighs approximately 2400 kg. The original GMT 830 frame constitutes 10% of the Suburban’s weight and has the largest weight reduction potential. In a cooperative effort with Tower Automotive, the University of Wisconsin-Madison has modeled, stamped and constructed two full aluminum frames using the GMT 430 tooling. The first frame, the UW 430 AL, was assembled to replicate the GMT 430 frame, while the second-generation frame, the UW 830 AL, mimicked the GMT 830 frame. FEA and traditional deflection and bending calculations were used to stiffen and strengthen the aluminum frame to acceptable levels. Front horn crush tests were used to optimize frontal impact energy absorption — the UW 830 AL design absorbs 36% more energy than the original GMT 430 steel frame with a 40% reduction in peak load. The complete aluminum frame weighs 120 kg — 98 kg lighter than the steel GMT 830 frame and 130 kg lighter than the steel GMT 430 frame.

Infrared and visible cirrus cloud optical properties were measured using ground-based high spectral resolution remote sensing data. The optical properties include: downwelling atmospheric radiance at infrared wavelengths in addition to atmospheric aerosol backscatter cross-section and depolarization at a visible wavelength. Data was acquired at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, during a 3 month case study from October through early December, 1995. The instrument suite included: a High Spectral Resolution Lidar (HSRL) (Piironen and Eloranta, 1994), an Atmospheric Emitted Radiance Interferometer (AERI) (Revercomb et al., 1993), and a Cross-chain Loran Atmospheric Sounding System (CLASS).

Abstract:
Negotiations connected with database renewals are sharply critical and ultimately impact renewal decisions. Today, academic libraries face an ever-consolidating marketplace, often accompanied by disruptive cost increases that toss sound reasoning aside. Instances of super-exponential cost increases transfigure once reasonable practices based on sound criteria to unsustainable subscriptions and inappropriate access models. Most troubling is that libraries have seldom been asked to participate in stakeholder discussions before these models and decisions were made. The paper reviews University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point Libraries struggle with these changing metrics. In context, the paper looks at how recent political upheaval in Wisconsin has overturned Wisconsin’s progressive heritage and contributed to a rapid dismantling of state funding for public higher education and its’ associated services. Wisconsin has been known as a ‘laboratory for democracy’ with its’ Wisconsin Idea, publicly championing higher education’s mission and expertise in service of the common good. Times are changing. Today, not only does Wisconsin’s public higher education confront losses of state funding, it faces changing demographics, reduced FTE’s, all equating to even less budget dollars. In turn, budget shortfalls have made it nearly impossible to address declining infrastructures, needs for academic program reorganization and institutional restructuring, much less maintain and enhance existing services.

Abstract:
MELCOR is widely used and sufficiently trusted for severe accident analysis. However, the occurrence of Fukushima has increased the focus on severe accident codes and their use. A MELCOR core degradation calculation was conducted at the University of Wisconsin – Madison. The calculation results were checked by comparing with a past CORA experiment. MELCOR calculation results included the flow rate of argon and steam, the generation rate of hydrogen. Through this work, the performance of MELCOR COR package was reviewed in detail. This paper compares the hydrogen generation rates predicted by MELCOR to the CORA test data. While agreement is reasonable it could be improved. Additionally, the MELCOR zirconium oxidation model was analyzed.
