Abstract:
In 2012, heads of local law enforcement agencies in Benton County, Oregon, contacted researchers at Oregon State University to discuss a problem: a sharp rise in the number of contacts between police and suspects displaying symptoms of mental illness. This initial inquiry led to an ongoing collaborative examination of the nature, causes, and consequences of the rise in police contacts. In this article, the authors describe this collaboration between researchers and law enforcement officials from the perspective of both parties, situating it within the context of mental illness in the U.S. criminal justice system. The collaborators draw on firsthand experiences and prior collaborations to discuss the benefits of, challenges in, and recommendations for university–police research collaborations. Although such collaborations may pose challenges (related to relationship definition, data collection and analysis, outputs, and relationship maintenance), the potential benefits—for researchers and law enforcement agencies—are substantial.

Fernandes, Anthony. "Building Alliances: A Partnership between a Middle School Mathematics Teacher and a University Researcher." Diss., The University of Arizona, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/195779.

Full text
Abstract:
This case study examined the evolution of a partnership between a middle school mathematics teacher and a university researcher around discussions on the content and teaching of mathematics. In particular, the study sought to examine the evolution of the partnership, the constraints present for the teacher and researcher, the impact of the partnership on the mathematical and pedagogical issues that arose in planning, teaching, and assessment, and the impact on the tasks that the teacher chose and implemented in the classroom. Drawing from the literature on collaborations and the emergent perspective, the evolution of the partnership occurred through three stages, determined by the content-teaching tensions. The first stage focused on the mathematics content, with the agenda being set and run by the researcher. The second stage gave rise to the content-teaching tensions as the teacher shifted the discussions from content to a focus on lesson planning and teaching. Tensions were resolved in the third stage with the teacher taking a proactive role in the discussions of lesson design and teaching. The mathematical issues in planning and teaching reflected the shift in the partnership where in the beginning the discussions focused on the mathematical content, later discussions centered on a combination of content, pedagogy, and student thinking. The assessment discussions addressed differences between the language of the curriculum and the district and state tests. The shift in the partnership can be attributed to the teacher's choice of high level mathematics tasks, the subsequent adoption of a conceptually based mathematics curriculum and the effective management of the dialectic tensions by both partners. This study illustrated that generating perturbations and effective management of dialectical tensions has the potential for a fruitful collaboration between teachers and researchers.

Lo, Wen-Chu. "An application of the Triarchic Theory of Intelligence to students of English in a Taiwanese university : reflections of an action researcher." Thesis, Durham University, 2009. http://etheses.dur.ac.uk/61/.

Full text
Abstract:
In order to acquire knowledge from my teaching and students’ learning experiences, I have attempted to apply the Triarchic Theory of Intelligence (i.e. analytical, creative and practical intelligence) to teaching English at a Taiwanese university. This study adopted the action research approach and was developed in three stages. Each stage lasted one semester. At the end of stage two, the lesson planning for practical intelligence was found to be difficult to develop. Therefore, the research questions were changed into comparing the experiences between the analytical and creative groups, which received the analytical and creative teaching approaches, respectively. According to the multiple data sources (i.e. students’ reflection papers, interviews, diary writing, testing, etc.), the major findings included: § The discrepancy in applying both analytical and creative teaching approaches from the above theory to teaching Chinese students; § Both the potential of using the creative teaching approach in creative writing during the lessons and the strength of the analytical teaching approach in essay-writing near the end of the intervention to enhance the students’ learning motivation; § The analytical group’s advantage of having self-study time in reducing the learning pressure arising from poor time management, and in facilitating better performances in learning attitudes, relevant disciplines and academic performance, including the language test. The creative group’s disadvantages of having no self-study time but having additional learning through creative writing, as a possible distraction from the novel, creative teaching approach. § The students’ changed perspectives on English writing in both analytical and creative groups from the negative to the positive; § A few students’ disinclination to engage intellectually, possibly due to the influence of the rote learning experienced during their secondary English education; § The students’ changed perspective on learning English in Taiwan from both teaching approaches, the possibility of creative teaching approach to establish the students’ clearer awareness of the importance of the learning methods and the possibility of employing analytical teaching approach to identify with greater clarity the relevant intellectual development. Along with these, the importance of: (1) classroom management, (2) the students’ time management, (3) workload considerations and (4) development in stages, and also the methodological changes via the self-inquiry process of the action research approach were also found to be prominent in this study.

Abstract:
Abstract Research indicates that understanding the influence of leadership and partnership development can inform the need to improve public education (Penuel & Gallagher, 2017). Although leadership theory and change theory support the need for partnerships in education, less attention has been given to how such partnerships develop and the role that leadership plays in that process. Therefore, the present study explored the role of leadership within researcher-practitioner partnerships and the process of developing sustainable partnerships in education as documented in a set of federal grant proposals, their final reports, and other descriptions of their efforts. Grant documents examined were awarded from the 2013 funding announcement of the U.S. Department of Education Institute of Education Sciences (IES) Researcher-Practitioner Partnerships (RPP) in Education Research program. In-depth qualitative document analysis provided a means to unobtrusively examine and interpret comprehensive, historical data (Corbin & Strauss, 2008; Patton, 2002). Directed content analysis (Hsieh & Shannon, 2005; Kaid & Johnston-Wadsworth, 1989) of the documents directed the process of data collection. This process used key concepts from the literature on transformational leadership, shared leadership, and leadership for change as the initial framework for data collection. Data analysis employed Eisner’s (1998) process of educational criticism using description, interpretation, evaluation, and thematics. Hatch’s (2002) process of typological analysis led to four typologies to organize the data for description and interpretation: capacity building; strategies for partnership development; approaches to communication; and the role of reflection in partnership development. The evaluation dimension of educational criticism indicated that partnerships employed shared leadership with evidence of internal and external support and a cultivation of shared commitment. Themes indicated that partnerships focused on both rigorous research and reflective practice, leaders engaged partners in establishing the infrastructure and strategic plans of the partnership, and partnerships galvanized support to address complex social issues beyond their formal organizational structure. Recommendations for future research include the need: (a) to explore the dynamics of communication in partnership work; (b) to clarify and facilitate the process of change in grant and project development; and (c) to develop of a process for sustainability beyond a specific grant or project. Recommendations for practice include the need: (a) to explore the cultivation of relationships in support of partnership development; (b) to identify clearly the primary issue to be addressed in the work of the partnership, and (c) to clarify mutual outcomes. Conclusions from the present study indicate the importance of a focus on the deliberate development of the researcher-practitioner partnerships themselves, the importance of concrete strategies for sharing leadership, and the importance of the development of professional relationships that support sustainability in partnership development.

Abstract:
From its earliest beginnings down to current postmodern XXIst century, Christianity is struck a balance between two phenomena, holding one another in various and complex mounting tensions, of empathy and of awareness towards reason and science. Herein, critical appraisals override the consideration of legitimate autonomy of reason and science, therein, a religious and ethical respect tends to govern various forms and shades of critical esteem, in favour of the autonomy of reason and science. Sciences freed from theologies monopoly, sciences excelling in knowledge and technical performances, but there still remains however, modern and contemporary sciences with misconducts of naturalism, nominalism, narrow positivism or political ideologies.Irrespective of an unresolved conflict, arising from the anti-modernist fights, the Church’s general councils of Vatican I (1869-1870: Constitution Dei Filius, chapter IV) and Vatican II (1962-1965: Constitution Gaudium et spes, 36) made huge steps forward : As the first reminds us of the legitimacy of science and reason in their specific areas of expertise, the second, while taking into account the progress of the theology of history, reflects deeper on the autonomy of worldly realities. With this background, with what canonical tools, could the safeguarding mission of the Roman Catholic character of the Church’s universities, for example, and her protection of cultures, sciences and the world of scientists, - under the conditions - could be guaranteed ?

Abstract:
Understood as a legal discipline, the right of research, relates to the regulation of scientific research between the opposite requirements of science and law. So we're talking through this legal construction of the object : "science", through the "law of research" to understand the patterns of emergence and functions - the development and regulation - of such a right being both caretaker and opponent to the learned institutions. The value and usefulness of the right of the research might be to show, through a legal analysis of scientific behavior, how does the right being understood as a technique works. Does the legal theory can understand a sociological object ? To answer to this, the concept of "scientific community", well known in sociology of science (see especially Robert K. Merton and the "normative structure" of science), will be analyzed according to the theory of the legal system of the Italian constitutional lawyer Santi Romano, in order to better understand the definition of the concept of the legal order.Eventually, it appears that the regulation operated by the state legal order upsets the independence of science, especially the academia sphere and is not always being able to ensure protection where the state should precisely safeguard and promote the quest for knowing. Is it therefore possible to devote a science released from his heteronomy versus the state ? This is the whole final proposal for the establishment of an authentic legal status for the Researcher and, especially, the resolution of scientific disputes by some sort of scientific Labour Court lessons

Abstract:
New Public Management helps universities and research institutions to perform in a highly competitive research environment. Decision making in the face of uncertainty, for example distribution of funds for research needs and purposes, urges research policy makers and university managers to understand the relationships between the dimensions of research performance and the resulting or incoming grants. Thus, it is important to accurately reflect the variables of scientific knowledge production on the level of individuals, research groups and universities. Chapter 2 of this thesis introduces an analysis on the level of individuals. The data are taken from the three widely-used ranking systems in the economic and business sciences among German-speaking countries: Handelsblatt (HB), Research Papers in Economics (RePEc, here RP) and Google Scholar (GS). It proposes a framework for collating ranking data for comparison purposes. Chapter 3 provides empirical evidence on the level of research groups using data from a Collaborative Research Center (CRC) on financial inputs and research output from 2005 to 2016. First, suitable performance indicators are discussed. Second, main properties of the data are described using visualization techniques. Finally, the time fixed effects panel data model and the fixed effects Poisson model are used to analyze an interdependency between financial inputs and research outputs. Chapter 4 examines the interdependence structure between third-party expenses (TPE), publications, citations and academic age using university data on individual performance in different scientific areas. A panel vector autoregressive model with exogenous variables (PVARX), impulse response functions and a forecast error variance decomposition help to capture the relationships in the system. To summarize, the chapter addresses the possible implications for policy and decision making and proposes recommendations for university research management.

Samupwa, Astridah Njala. "Adopting research data management (RDM) practices at the University of Namibia (UNAM): a view from researchers." Master's thesis, Faculty of Humanities, 2019. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/31205.

Abstract:
This study investigated the extent of Research Data Management (RDM) adoption at the University of Namibia (UNAM), viewing it from the researcher’s perspective. The objectives of the study were to investigate the extent to which RDM has been adopted as part of the research process at UNAM, to identify challenges encountered by researchers attempting to practice RDM and to provide solutions to some of the challenges identified. Rogers’ Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) theory was adopted for the study to place UNAM within an innovation-decision process stage. The study took a quantitative approach of which a survey was used. A stratified sample was drawn from a list of all 948 faculty members (the number of academics taken from the UNAM annual report of 2016). The Raosoft sample size calculator (Raosoft, 2004) states that 274 is the minimum recommended sample size necessary for a 5% margin of error and a 95% confidence level from a population of 948, and this was the intended sample size. A questionnaire administered via an online web-based software tool, SurveyMonkey, was used. A series of questions was asked to individuals to obtain statistically useful information on the topic under study. The paid version of SurveyMonkey was used for analysis while graphics and tables were created in Microsoft Excel. The results of the study showed that for the group that responded to the survey, the extent to which they have adopted RDM practices is still very low. Although individuals were found to be managing their research data, this was done out of their own free will; this is to say that there was no policy mandating and guiding their practices. The researcher placed most of the groups that responded to the survey at the first stage of the innovation-decision process, which is the information stage. However, librarians who responded to the survey were found to be more advanced as they were seen to be aware of and engaged in knowledge acquisition regarding RDM practices. Thus, the researcher placed them at the second stage in the innovation-decision process (Persuasion). Recommendations for the study are based on the analysed data. It is recommended, among others, that UNAM should give directives in the form of policies to enhance the adoption of RDM practices and this should be communicated to the entire UNAM community to create awareness regarding the concept of RDM.

Abstract:
AbstractThe Gadfly first materialised as a provocative data performance at the Transitions Research Symposium held at The University of Melbourne in June 2017. The figuration of gadfly in the title shapes the figure of the researcher as (bothersome) questioner that provokes critical dialogue about the assumptions underpinning our own research practices and learning environments research more generally. This figuration provides us an entry point into working data through approaches offered by new materialist and post-qualitative research methods. The resulting data performance came together as a collaborative experiment inhabiting the in-between spaces of researchers, participants, research contexts, and ‘data’ initially generated in a Taekwondo training assemblage. Our collaborative approach involved an intra-active process as a way of doing data differently. Informing our process are concepts of intra-action, assemblage, affect, and sticky data.

Abstract:
Specific Learning Disorders involve a plurality of functions that impact the decoding of the alphabetic code. They have an evolutionary character, that is, vary according to the age of the subject. The present work, connected to positive practical experiences, investigates the characteristics of DSAs in adulthood and the impact with university teaching. It presents the outcomes in progress of an interdisciplinary project (including pedagogical, medical and engineering area). Learning Disabilities (LD) disorder are relatively new for the education at the university level, and have therefore pushed teachers and researcher to define research projects, both scientific and pedagogic, aimed to suit the needs of LD students. In such perspective, due to the high variability of LD manifestations and degrees and also to the peculiar students’ features, a multidisciplinary approach and strategies are required to identify personalized educational paths for LD students while respecting, the specificity and the objectives of the different university courses.

Abstract:
This study is aimed to identify the stages of cooperation between families of people with disabilities and education specialists and the importance of social media in supporting this cooperation and parental participation in the school and civil society institutions, in addition to knowing the dimensions of this participation and its effectiveness in special education programs and educational institutions, including teachers and specialists. Also, others who work in the field of special education. The study followed the quantitative and qualitative approach. The researcher used the two measures of cooperation, acceptance and parental rejection of Khalifa (2007). The researcher used the quantitative and qualitative method to answer the study questions. The study sample consisted of ten parents who have a child with a dependency. The results of the analysis of the parental participation questionnaire showed that the principle of family rights ranked first with a rate of 94.8%, and the highest percentage of responses from the sample members to this variable was 100%, while the lowest percentage of responses was 80%. The defense of the rights of the child comes in second place with a rate of 94.4%, while the principle of commitment is ranked third by a rate of 91%, and the principle of equality came in the fourth rank with a slight difference of 90.5%, and the principle of communication comes in the fifth order with a rate of 90%. Social communication, it ranked sixth by 90%, the principle of respect comes in seventh with a rate of 85%, then the principle of professional competence came in eighth place with a rate of 82%, and finally trust comes in ninth and last place with a rate of 81.5%. Whereas the specialist’s answers to the interview questions indicated the importance of using social media in the process of parental participation in education, which was in agreement with the responses of the families of the disabled, while the specialist’s responses agreed with the families ’responses on the importance of the principle of positive communication with the families of the disabled, and building positive relationships with them. Which will lead to building the principle of mutual trust, as the responses of the specialist indicated that it fully applies the values of parental partnership at a rate of 100% for each value, which did not agree with the responses of the families of students with disabilities.

Charbaji, Rima. "Factors Influencing Reading News on the Mobile Devices in Qatar in Light of Augmented Reality (AR) & Virtual Reality (VR)." In Qatar University Annual Research Forum & Exhibition. Qatar University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.29117/quarfe.2020.0254.

Full text
Abstract:
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine and better understand the factors influencing reading news on the mobile devices in Qatar from the viewpoint of intention to adopt augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). Design/methodology/approach: A large convenience sample of 699 respondents from Qatar was surveyed. Using SPSS, the researcher employed the Kaisers-Meyer-Olkin (KMO) measure of sampling adequacy and the Bartless test of sphericity to establish the construct validity of the instrument. The four extracted and rotated dimensions were found to be reliable and valid. Main findings: Findings from multiple regression analysis have confirmed two out of six hypotheses. Two independent variables (1) nationality and (2) interest in using AR & VR are significant in predicting the use of mobile devices to follow regional and international news in Qatar from the viewpoint of intention to adopt augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). Implications: Implications of this study are two folds. Hypotheses that are partially supported, suggest an urgent need for further research to uncover the various modes afforded by the smart digital society in Qatar. More proactive approach from decision and policy makers in Qatar’s newspaper printing industry is needed to benefit from the digitalization of international news. Novelty: This article empirically correlates two fields of business research: the digital copy of the real world and reading international news. This piece of research has been published in May 2020 at the scopus indexed International Journal of Advanced Research in Engineering and Technology (IJARET).

Abstract:
Discussion of the relevance of Information Systems research to the practitioner community began in the 1990s. Though the issue has faded from top-tier journals, the problem remains. This article provides the first comprehensive consideration of the major papers relating to IS research relevance. It also recognizes that the problem of relevance is not one that is likely to be solved at the global IS level, or even the university level. Rather, the relevance of IS research ultimately will be determined by each individual researcher. To facilitate individual researchers’ progress in moving toward greater relevance, this research provides a concise plan of specific actions that are within the control of each individual IS researcher. These actions involve both how researchers attempt to inform the practitioner community about their work, and how researchers inform themselves about the concerns of practitioners. Several specific actions for improving the relevance of individual research are detailed.

Fakhrou, Abdulnaser Abdulraheem. "The Problems Facing Students of College of Education at Qatar University: A Path to Academic Accreditation." In Qatar University Annual Research Forum & Exhibition. Qatar University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.29117/quarfe.2020.0265.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aimed to reveal the most important problems facing students of the College of Education from their point of view and its relationship to some variables. The study used two tools: the first is the open interview (focus group), and the second is a questionnaire designed by the researcher. It contained 65 items distributed on six axes: costs and assignments, tests, academic professor, academic registration and guidance, the content of study materials, and finally the classrooms have been verified as being truthful and consistent. The results showed that the problems related to the classroom were the most prominent facing students, while the problems related to the academic professor were the least important from their point of view. The order of importance of the problems varied according to the specialization taught by female students, and by the different program registered with it, as well as by the different status of the female student, whether she was a full-time student or on the job. Faculty of Education has to ensure that the students are progressing and achieving high performance during the program with the less problems they face. If students do not meet these criteria/expectations, measures need to be taken to support them and help them improve their skills, knowledge, dispositions and achievement. If students do not meet standards, the College might not get full accreditation, and will have an Area For Improvement. This means that the College has to take other measures to improve students’ achievement to receive full accreditation.

Fadhul, Shereen Radhi. "The Perceptions of the Special Education Teacher and Families of Children with Disabilities about Cooperative Partnership." In Qatar University Annual Research Forum & Exhibition. Qatar University Press, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.29117/quarfe.2020.0271.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aimed to identify the perceptions of the special education teacher and families of children with disabilities about cooperative partnership in the primary stage, specifically in the age group from 6 to 11 years, in order to contribute to providing a vision that can be relied upon in facing the challenges and obstacles that prevent cooperative partnership between families of children, people with disabilities and a special education teacher. The study followed the quantitative and qualitative approach to its relevance to the nature of the study. The study sample consisted of a teacher specializing in the field of special education and eight families from the families of students with disabilities in one of the integration elementary schools for girls affiliated to the Ministry of Education and Higher Education in Qatar. In collecting the data, the researcher used the cooperation and interview scale prepared by Batoul Khalifa 2017. The results of the study found that there are statistically significant differences between the order of the principles of cooperative partnership of the special education teacher and the families of students with disabilities in relation to the principle of family rights and social media. As the overall principles of cooperative partnership of the special education teacher achieved the final percentages, while the results of the principle of family rights and social media among the families of students with disabilities ranged between 33% and 36%. The study also found the relationship of the perceptions of families of students with disabilities about communicating with the educational level of the family, as university and secondary education occupied 44%, compared to only 12% for the average educational level, and the principle of communication among the families of students with disabilities reached 80%.

Abstract:
The CABER group is based at the University of Limerick and for the past 15 years has primarily focused on cardiovascular hemodynamics research. A key element of the group’s research has always been in the application of CFD to idealized and patient specific geometries. Recently the group has changed commercial CFD software’s and so currently has access to 2 packages, Star-CCM+ 6.02.007 and Ansys Fluent 12.1.4. For this challenge it was therefore decided to compare both software packages and also to examine variability between users. The Fluent simulations were conducted by postgraduate researcher Adrian Lynch and the Star CCM software was utilized independently by postgraduate researchers Jennifer Costello and Leonard Browne.
