Pansari, Abdul Latief. "Lifestyle and coronary prone behaviour pattern (Type A) in university administrators." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1985. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/17020.

Full text
Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 87-96.
The prevalence of Type A behaviour pattern and its relationship to specific lifestyle factors were investigated in 180 male university administrators aged 25 to 65. One hundred and twenty respondents were Afrikaans speaking; 60 were English speaking. All respondents were volunteers and were recruited from 16 different universities in South Africa. Information on lifestyles were obtained by questionnaires. Type A behaviour pattern was assessed using the Jenkins Activity survey. The Afrikaans group obtained significantly higher Type A scores than the English group. Factors involved were not clear. Other factors which were significantly related to Type A and/or other JAS scores were the number of people individuals were responsible for at work; the organizational rank and managerial achievement quotient of respondents; the number of promotions and the number of times respondents changed their line of work; the educational level of respondents; their Alcohol Consumption Index; feelings of loneliness; the number of hours they worked per week; their experience of subjective distress; whether they had a wife who worked outside the home or not; marital status of respondents, and their smoking behaviour. Results imply significant differences between culturally different groups leading different lifestyles but doing the same kind of work. Limitations of the study are looked at, and recommendations made for further research.

Abstract:
This investigation explored voice use and perception of use in singers as compared with non-singers at the university. Students recorded the amount and type of their voice use for forty-eight hours. They made judgments about their use and whether a voice disturbance was present. Each student was taped, and tapes were judged for disturbances. It was hypothesized that singers would have greater voice use and awareness than non-singers and experienced singers would have greater voice use and awareness than less experienced singers. Singers used their voices more than non-singers, but there were no differences in awareness. No differences between singer groups were noted. There was a high incidence of voice disturbances in all groups. Suggestions for future research were made.

Mayer, Diane E., and n/a. "Perceptions of a microteaching program by preservice primary teachers and their university tutors." University of Canberra. Education, 1992. http://erl.canberra.edu.au./public/adt-AUC20060907.133436.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis reports on the perceptions held by second year preservice primary teachers and their tutors/supervisors of a 1990 microteaching program at a regional university in Queensland. Perceptions were ascertained on (a) the skills addressed, (b) peer and tutor feedback, (c) the self evaluation techniques used, (d) the content level taught, (e) the videotaping of the sessions, and (f) the effectiveness of the program in the continuing development of teaching skills for preservice teachers. Perceptions were collected using a questionnaire designed for the purpose. The questionnaire incorporates fixed response options, for which percentages of those agreeing with each response are presented in tabular form. It also invites open ended responses which are coded according to the areas designated of interest for the study. A Likert type rating scale is used to ascertain opinions on the effectiveness of the program for developing particular classroom teaching skills. Results of the study indicate that for the participants, microteaching is appropriate and effective in helping to provide prospective teachers with experiences that complement practice teaching in schools, but that the actual structure and components of any such program requires some discussion. Analysis indicates a need to vary microteaching programs from those of many traditional approaches based on the early Stanford model. The writer suggests the concept of a teaching-learning laboratory based on a macro teaching skill approach with peers as more appropriate for current preservice teacher education.

Allen, Hengameh G. "Role Of Membrane Lipids in Developing Insulin resistant Diabetes Mellitus Type II in Caucasians and African Americans." NCSU, 2000. http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/theses/available/etd-20001130-153236.

Full text
Abstract:

Insulin resistance in diabetes (DMII) can result from membrane lipid (PM) changes. Membrane lipids play a major role in hormonal signal transduction and in appropriate amounts of such molecules may lead to either decreased, or increased membrane fluidity. Therefore, in this study we determined whether PM differences exist between African Americans (BL) and Caucasians (W) and if differences contribute to impaired insulin binding (IB) in DMII. Methodology: Subjects were recruited from Caucasian Control (CC) (n=10), African American Control (AC) (n=10), Caucasian Diabetics (CD) (n=5), African American Diabetics (AD) (n=10) groups. The diabetics were type II diabetics on daily insulin injections (age and sex-matched in both racial groups). The evaluations consisted of: three day dietary record, serum total cholesterol (TC), triglyceride (TRG), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), high density lipoprotein (HDL), glucose (Glu), hemoglobin A1C (A1C), insulin (Ins) levels and RBC membrane lipid composition including, fatty acids, phospholipids (PL), cholesterol (CH) and RBC insulin binding (IB), RESULTS: Cholesterol intake did not show any correlations with any blood constituents, membrane lipids or membrane properties. The macronutrient intake did not show a significant correlation with blood lipid levels, membrane properties and the anthropometric measurements as expected. The triglyceride levels were higher in diabetics (P <0.01). The lipoprotein evaluation indicated significant differences in VLDL (P <0.01), LDL (P <0.05) and HDL (P <0.0001) levels between control and diabetic subjects. There were no racial differences seen among the four groups. Diabetics had higher CH and it correlated with Glu (r= 0.65, P<0.05) and IB (r= -0.61, P <0.05). The CH/PL revealed strong correlation between LDL (r=0.42, P <0.01) and HDL (r= -0.56, P <0.05). The PM trans fatty acid levels (TFA) were highest in AD (P <0.01), but no correlations with IB & Glu. The PM saturated/polyunsaturated ratio (S/P) was higher in diabetics (P <0.05) correlating with insulin level (r= 0.42, P <0.01) & IB (r= -0.45, P <0.05), but no correlations with serum lipids occurred. The PL analysis showed no significant group differences for phosphatidyl inositol (PI) levels; however, significant racial differences were observed in phosphatidyl ethanolamine (PE) and phosphatidyl choline (PC). The W showed higher PE levels than BL and lower PC. The RBC rheological (PE/PS) properties (deformability) was lower in diabetics and AC than CC. The saturated nature of RBC [(SPH+PC)/(PE+PS)] was the lowest in CC (P< 0.056). The combination of increased S/P, and increased saturated nature, decreased PE/PS, increased CH/PL indicate decreased membrane fluidity and decreased RBC deformability, which might contribute to decreased IB in DMII. Differences in PE and PC levels between BL and W possibly indicate a racial difference in cause of insulin resistance. The racial differences in developing DMII need to be recognized so the therapeutic agents can target the exact problem in the metabolic pathway to correct the insulin resistance.

Eldred, Kerry T. "Coping with Chronic Illness: Do Strategies Differ by Illness Type?" UNF Digital Commons, 2011. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/125.

Full text
Abstract:
While coping varies with individuals and is a product of complex, interrelated factors, the primary interest of this study was determining how coping behaviors manifest according to these chronic illness types: those of known pathology (e.g., asthma, osteoarthritis, lupus) and those that lack a clear, structural pathology (i.e., functional somatic syndromes and medically unexplained symptoms). Data for this study were gathered from a series of four comprehensive online surveys, which included measures of coping (Brief COPE), pain and health outcomes (SF-36), negative affect (I-PANAS-SF) and depression (PHQ- 8). The analyzed sample was comprised of 148 participants (119 Female, 28 Male and 1 Not Answered) with a mean age of 43.34 (SD = 13.69), all of whom experienced at least three months of chronic physical symptoms. Based on diagnosis, the participants were grouped into that of conventional disease (CD), functional somatic syndromes (FSS) or medically unexplained symptoms (MUS). Even while controlling for significant covariates (e.g., depression, negative affect, pain perception), multivariate analyses revealed no significant differences in coping strategies by illness group, Wilks’s Lambda = .96, F(4, 222) = 1.05, p = .38. The results suggest that the use of coping strategies does not differ by illness type, but can be predicted by other, health-related factors, notably stress, β = -.21, t(120) = -2.09, p = .04; symptoms, β = .32, t(120) = 2.82, p = .01; personal control, β = .19, t(120) = 2.16, p = .03, and negative affect, β = .34, t(121) = 2.81, p = .01. It appears that patient experience with chronic illness can be more informative regarding appropriate treatments and therapeutic interventions than just illness type itself.

McConnell, Melody Dawn. "Interaction and Innovation: The Impacts of Social Factors and Classroom Type on University Biology Instructor Classroom Assessment Decisions." Diss., North Dakota State University, 2020. https://hdl.handle.net/10365/32061.

Full text
Abstract:
Efforts to improve university science education continue to emphasize the importance of active learning, including frequent formative assessment and timely feedback that helps students reach desired learning outcomes. Yet, nationwide, many instructors continue to use primarily lecture-based teaching methods, with limited use of formative assessment and feedback. Factors that affect instructor adoption and implementation of new teaching techniques include departmental norms, peer interaction, and classroom environment. In this work, a model of the impacts of departmental teaching and social norms and peer interactions on instructor innovation decision is presented. This model is then used to explore 1) instructor teaching-related interactions within a single biology department, assessing the conditions for innovation diffusion, and 2) instructor perceptions of norms and interactions in that department and their impact on decision-making. Finally, introductory biology instructors’ use of assessment and feedback techniques were characterized in a lecture hall and an active learning classroom to see how innovation adoption translates to specific assessment practice and investigate the impact of the active learning classroom. Results indicate that perceptions and practices vary widely, but that both peer interactions and active learning classrooms may have a positive impact on teaching innovation adoption and practices in a university biology department. In addition, the pattern of interactions within this department allows instructors of varying assessment experience to interact, making it potentially conducive to the spread of teaching ideas. The model and results presented here will assist in understanding the factors involved in instructor decision-making and can be leveraged to help promote the use of formative assessment and other evidence-based teaching practices.

Full text
Abstract:
College students judged the testimony in a civil trial in which a childhood memory had been recovered after 20 years. Participants were 108 students (n = 79 female and 29 male) enrolled in undergraduate psychology courses. The design was a 2 X 2 X 2 between subjects factorial design which investigated effects of the type of incident (sexual abuse/hit-and-run), how the memory was recovered (therapy/wedding), and type of testimony (assertive/emotional). The study determined that mock jurors were likely to perceive the plaintiff's testimony as credible when she testified she was sexually abused as a child rather than when she was a victim of a hit-and-run accident. The results also indicated that testimonial demeanor had a significant effect on mock jurors' perception of the plaintiff's credibility and that if a female victim testifies with a nonemotional stereotypical masculine demeanor, the jurors may react in a negative manner.

Bernard, Anthony Joseph. "Robust I-Sample Analysis of Means Type Randomization Tests for Variances." UNF Digital Commons, 1999. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/90.

Full text
Abstract:
The advent of powerful computers has brought about the randomization technique for testing statistical hypotheses. Randomization tests are based on shuffles or rearrangements of the (combined) sample. Putting each of the I samples "in a bowl" forms the combined sample. Drawing samples "from the bowl" forms a shuffle. Shuffles can be made with or without replacement. In this thesis, analysis of means type randomization tests will be presented to solve the homogeneity of variance problem. An advantage of these tests is that they allow the user to graphically present the results via a decision chart similar to a Shewhart control chart. The focus is on finding tests that are robust to departures from normality. The proposed tests will be compared against commonly used nonrandomization tests. The type I error stability across several nonnormal distributions and the power of each test will be studied via Monte Carlo simulation.

"Object type graphs." Tulane University, 2001.

Find full text
Abstract:
Object type graphs are proposed as a new approach to the typing of object-languages. Internal dependencies among methods characterize the behavior of objects and differentiate them from records. The specification of these dependencies enrich the type representation of objects. First, we define a simple typed object-oriented language (TOOL) in which such a type representation is introduced by means of links. Then we proceed to describe the essential aspects of TOOL such as typing rules, equational theory, and basic properties of types and links. Next, we formally define the notion of object type graphs and investigate two major issues of object-oriented language typing: subtyping and inheritance. Subtyping based on object type graphs is defined and its results are compared to the subtyping in the language O-1 through a discussion of variance of subtyping (covariance, contravariance, and invariance). Inheritance mechanisms in the languages O-2 and O-3 are analyzed and problems are identified. Inheritance based on object type graphs is defined and its results are compared to that of O-2 and O-3 in the context of the problems found in O-2 and O-3. Finally, the relationship between inheritance and subtyping is investigated under our new typing scheme. We are able to reverse the previously established result in literature---inheritance does not imply subtyping. That is, we prove that inheritance does imply subtyping in our type system Object type graphs and graph-based typing mechanisms are the fiat research effort that captures abstractly the internal structure of objects in heir type representations, and then uses these features to explore typing issues and to define a new typing scheme
acase@tulane.edu

Abstract:
Cloned A-channel candidates (Kv1.4, 3.4, 4.1, 4.2 and 4.3) were initially expressed in Xenopus oocytes. However, functional discrepancies exist between native A-currents and currents resulting from Kv alpha-subunit expression in oocytes. The discrepancies may stem from heteromeric subunit assembly or may simply result from the different expression environments. Therefore, we compared native A-current (IA) from adult rat sympathetic neurons with those from cloned A-channel candidates expressed in HEK293T cells. Native and cloned IA were recorded under similar experimental conditions using the patch-clamp technique. IA of SCG neurons activated at more hyperpolarized voltages than cloned IA. Inactivation of native IA occurred at more negative potentials and the recovery from inactivation was more rapid than that of cloned IA. Native current was more sensitive to 4-aminopyridine than currents from the Kv 4 family. These results demonstrate that single cloned Kv-channel alpha-subunits do not duplicate the native A-current of sympathetic neurons M-channels can be modulated by a large array of Gq/11-coupled receptors. The histamine H1 receptor (H1R) also appears to be a Gq/11-coupled receptor, however, the involvement of H 1R in M-channel modulation has not been addressed. Therefore, we investigated if histamine could inhibit recombinant M-channels produced by KCNQ2/KCNQ3 channel subunit expression via H1R receptors expressed in HEK 293T and HeLa cells. Our studies showed that activation of H1R by histamine significantly inhibited recombinant M-currents (IM). This inhibition was not a peculiarity of the HEK 293T cell since IM inhibition by histamine also occurred in HeLa cells. Activation of a pertussis toxin-insensitive G protein was involved in histamine inhibition. Moreover, Galphaq/11 is a mediator of the inhibition since expression of the Galpha q/11 buffer significantly prevented histamine inhibition. However, expression of Gbetagamma buffers also strongly attenuated IM inhibition by histamine, indicating that the Gbetagamma dimer was also involved in IM modulation by histamine. The histamine inhibition of I M was not mediated by Ca2+ release from an intracellular Ca2+ store since thapsigargin pretreatment with could not prevent histamine inhibition. Pretreatment with nonspecific protein kinases inhibitors were also unable to prevent histamine inhibition, indicating activation of protein kinases was not involved in histamine inhibition of IM
acase@tulane.edu
