Abstract:
In this article, I report on an action project undertaken by a group of young women (aged 18 to 20) to foster public discussions about the prevalence of rape culture on their university’s campus. Students proposed this action project during a book study of a young adult (YA) novel that focused on rape culture and sexual violence. Discussions during the book study resulted in the women creating a video designed for university orientation events that addressed common misconceptions about issues such as consent, relationship violence, sexual coercion, and victimhood. Using case study and narrative methods, I recount my experience of witnessing unexpected activism in my classroom. Framed within critical literacy research, I consider the outcomes of making space for student activism and I discuss implications for practitioners.

Abstract:
Objective : Reading is a crucial academic behavior, which directly affects the formation of personality and develops people's thinking. In the higher education environment, reading culture helps students acquire new knowledge quickly and effectively. However, in recent years, young people and students tend to be lazy to read books, afraid of reading academic books while prefer reading comics and novels. At the same time, the dominance of the internet and audio-visual equipment makes reading in schools and universities become less attractive. This study was conducted with two objectives: (1) To describe the current situation of reading culture; and (2) To identify some factors affecting the reading culture of full-time bachelor students in Hanoi University of Public Health in 2019. Thereby, contributing to raise students' awareness about the roles of reading and providing information to help improving the quality and performance of the university’s library. Methods: The study was conducted on 420 full-time bachelor students from the first year to the fourth year, belonging to four majors of the Hanoi University of Public Health in 2019. Main findings: The study results showed that among 420 full-time bachelor students, 41.0% read books on a regular basis and 80.0% liked reading books. With regression bionary logistic analasys, associated factors with reading frequency includes: Going to library weekly (OR=1,87; p=0,004; CI95%: 1,22 – 2,84) and Completed reading the document assigned by teachers (OR=1,61; p=0,043; CI95%: 1,01 – 2,55). In addition, students who were reading addiction were likely to read all the book assigned, which was higher than the students who did not like reading. Conclusions: With full-time Bachelor students at Hanoi University of Public Health, percentages of students with frequent reading behavior were not high in general. However, it could be seen that the reading behavior of students was influenced by the teachers’ activities. Therefore, teachers should enhance checking books and course materials that students have read before classes as well as setting a criteria on the minimum number of academic books students should read while doing their assignments so that students are more aware of the importance of academic reading while studying at university. Abstract:
From 1973 until early 1992, the Creswell Library of Islamic Art and Architecture, first established at the American University in Cairo (AUC) in 1957, evolved from a restricted research library dominated by its original owner, K. A. C. Creswell, into a teaching and research branch library integrated within the university’s library system. International politics and university-wide library needs delayed improvements, but the Creswell collection was fully catalogued and interfiled when the new Main Library opened in 1982. As use of the Creswell Library accelerated, stacks nominally closed were opened to faculty and trusted students until standard procedures resumed after a 1989 budget and staff increase, anticipating the library’s 1992 incorporation in AUC’s new Rare Book and Special Collections Library.A marked increase in MA degrees awarded in the discipline and in use by visiting researchers during the library’s final years testifies to its effectiveness in supporting the study of Islamic art. Assessments of the library’s overall contribution, however, must balance the value of a core collection of beautiful books, little used, against an incalculable loss: the records of Cairo buildings no longer extant that would have resulted from the larger student group a more accessible library would have encouraged.

Abstract:
<p>The present study is an applied research project and uses a descriptive-analytical survey design. It follows both qualitative and quantitative data collection procedures. The statistical population of the qualitative section consists of 19 Iranian education experts who are selected via targeted random sampling. And the statistical population of the quantitative section consists of all full-time instructors and faculty members of Farhangian University in six provinces of Iran (n=181), of whom 150 are selected via random sampling.<strong> </strong>Data are collected through semi-structured interviews and researcher-made questionnaires. To determine the validity of interviews and questionnaires, we have used confirmatory factor analysis for verifying construct validity and Cronbach’s alpha for estimating questionnaire reliability. Qualitative findings are analyzed based on the spiral of analysis and quantitative data are processed through descriptive and inferential statistics. According to the results of the qualitative section, the most important educational needs of Farhangian University’s faculty members fir into two areas: 1. Religious needs with an emphasis on Islamic education, and 2. ethical, cultural and social needs comprising four domains: 2.1 cultural, 2.2 social, 2.3 ethical, and 2.4 political. The results of the quantitative section also indicate that the educational needs of Farhangian University’s faculty members are higher than average in both areas. The most important need of Farhangian University’s faculty members in the cultural domain is related to the subscale “being aware of the role of university professors in relation to preserving, transferring, reforming, and recreating culture” while their most important need in the theological domain is related to “the ability to use the educational principles and implications of the Quran and Nahjolbalaghe” (Imam Ali’s book of ethical teachings)</p>

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate students’ understandings of ocean sustainability and the pedagogical influence of higher education on those conceptions. Design/methodology/approach The conceptions of ocean sustainability of 54 university students of various academic disciplines enrolled in the 2014/2015 semester course “Sustainable Oceans” were assessed through use of auto-photography. Data were collected at the beginning and end of the course. Inter-rater reliability was measured by percentage of identical coding outcomes by two coders. Findings Auto-photography is effective in assessing notions of sustainability. Social and economic dimensions were captured less frequently than environmental aspects in the students’ photographs. Overall, students demonstrated vague perceptual awareness about who should take responsibility concerning lifeworld-related issues. Also, their perceptions were affected by their choice of academic discipline. Engaging students in inter-/transdisciplinary learning, integrating the arts, science and community, helped develop a more balanced, action-motivated conception of sustainability. Post-test patterns of change in students’ vision and action were observed. Practical implications Implementing sustainability education in a university’s coordinating bodies is effective in constructing a campus-based learning network, and participation in local community empowerment promotes a substantial and multidimensional concept of sustainability, and teaching material that includes content from the fine arts, literature or music stimulates students’ awareness of, and sensitivity to, lifeworld issues. Originality/value This paper provides an innovative, auto-photography-based methodology, including an operational procedure, coding book and method of analysis, for assessing students’ conceptions of sustainability. It also develops an interdisciplinary course that serves a “threshold” intervention role in ocean sustainability education.

Kissinger, Jeffrey Scott. "A Collective Case Study of Mobile E-Book Learning Experiences." UNF Digital Commons, 2011. http://digitalcommons.unf.edu/etd/127.

Full text
Abstract:
This research was designed to explore the learning experiences of state college students using mobile e-book readers. The purpose of the study was to build a rich description of how students used electronic textbooks delivered on mobile computing devices for college-level, introductory sociology courses. This research employed a multiple case study design that thoroughly investigated and documented student experiences with this instructional technology. The bounding frame was comprised of the literature on mobile technology, mobile learning theories, and e-books. Situated within the mobile learning framework was a theoretical lens of learning theories commonly found in the literature on mobile learning (constructivism, social cognitive theory, self-efficacy theory, expectancy x value theory, self-determination theory, and situated cognition). This lens was used to provide insight into the student’s learning experiences. This study was comprised of data from a variety of sources that were chosen for their ability to produce insight into the learning experiences of mobile e-book students taking introduction to sociology courses at a Southeastern public state college. The data analysis was comprised of three levels of increasing stages of granular examination. These included level one: descriptive summaries of student cases, level two: student and instructor interview data and excerpts from audio recording transcriptions organized by topical categories, and level three: cross-case synthesis relating to the theoretical framework and research questions. Students were found to be competent with the e-books, confident, metacognitive, and desirous of more social learning opportunities within their e-books. By addressing the primary research question and the subquestions, six major conclusions were reached. These were: (a) students expressed competence in their use of the mobile e-books, (b) students expressed feelings of high self-efficacy when using the mobile e-books, (c) students overall valued the use of the e-book for their learning, (d) students were individualized and metacognitive in their learning with the mobile e-books, (e) students enhanced their learning socially and within situated learning opportunities, and (f) the students and the instructor had divergent views on the value and utility of social, interactive textbooks. Increasing understanding of the use of electronic and mobile instructional technologies such as e-books may better assist educational leaders with preparing students for today’s global knowledge economy. Based on the conclusions of this study, recommendations for future research and educational leadership were addressed.

Atsango, Margaret Aronya. "The use of electronic books in academic libraries : a case study of the University of the Witwatersrand." Diss., University of Pretoria, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/2263/51687.

Full text
Abstract:
Although electronic books are becoming a common place globally, they are not necessarily as widely used as other e-resources due to non-familiarity by many users. Academic libraries are important research centres, supporting the research activities of all disciplines, and seeking to establish and cultivate initiatives which address research output challenges. Traditionally, libraries are the best agencies for collecting, organizing and preserving print information resources for effective use, and for the advancement of knowledge. However, the evolution of electronic information resources and electronic books, has forced librarians in developing countries to rethink collection development policies, and to assess accessibility and convenience. The period since 2005 has seen growth in print and electronic resources, and the development of new clientele relationships, which has changed user information needs as a result of the development of an advanced modern electronic networked environment, that supports the distribution of information content and facilitates its use. The purpose of this research was to conduct a case study research in the University of the Witwatersrand, to explore the use of e-books among undergraduate students in its Faculty of Engineering, to assess levels of e-book use; attitude and perception, check user viewpoints on favourable and unfavourable characteristics of e-books; whether there are any preferences for print versus e-books; the impact of e-books on studies; the purpose they choose to use or not use e-books and to assess any challenges. This study utilised questionnaire and interviews to collect data. The findings indicate that Wits engineering students have preference for print; however, e-books are essential as complementary resources for research. The slow uptake can be attributed to various challenges such as lack of awareness among students; inadequate technology infrastructure; intermittent power outages; different platforms requiring passwords; eye fatigue while reading on the screen; lack of subject specific e-books, and publisher restrictions. The study concludes that it is essential to involve the faculty and lecturers, to increase awareness and usage amongst specific target population.<br>Mini Dissertation (MIT)--University of Pretoria, 2015.<br>Information Science<br>MIT<br>Unrestricted

Abstract:
This case study sheds light on successful matriculation practices which emerge from the combination of institutional efforts and student needs. In order to discern successful matriculation data was collected in the form of interviews, observations, and documents at a less selective college with a high rate of retention. Mortimer Adler College possesses unique qualities with respect to curriculum, student population, teaching styles, and student life which affect retention in both positive and negative ways. The institution utilizes a highly structured Great Books curriculum and does not utilize traditional grading and assessment methods. The methods of student socialization are also explored through interviews with faculty and administrators. The findings of this study reveal the qualities of Mortimer Adler College which both support and hinder student success. The study also gives insight to the views of students within this unique institutional setting, focusing on their needs and goals and how their perceptions of the institution impact retention. The review of practices at this institution combined with the perception of the student body allows for the examination of programs and practices employed by Mortimer Adler College which aid in improving and supporting high retention that may also be used at other institutions of higher education. Abstract:
Educational Leadership<br>Ed.D.<br>Accreditors and administrators have begun to focus on general education with an eye to improvement. One of the most valued, but difficult to assess, learning outcomes in general education is critical thinking. Critical thinking is thought to play a role in student engagement and positive student learning outcomes. This study examined students' acquisition of critical thinking skills in a required general education great books course at a large, mid-Atlantic, Research I university with a high transfer-in population. Student interviews, class observations and document analysis were employed in the study. Specific attention was paid to dialogic learning, as Vygotsky's theory of social learning and the theory of student engagement underpinned the study. This study found that critical thinking learning goals were not communicated to the students explicitly through the syllabus. Only 20 percent of the students in the class reported acquiring critical thinking skills. All of those students were female transfer students. Many students described the class as outside their primary educational interests. Those who acquired critical thinking skills were more likely to be active participants in the class, value professor-student conferences and have a strong academic support network. Social interaction contributed to students' acquisition of critical thinking skills in this class. Future assessment of critical thinking will depend on a clearer definition of the concept. General education programs and courses that link social interaction and the acquisition of critical thinking skills are worthy of further study.<br>Temple University--Theses

Full text
Abstract:
If you are holding this textbook in your hands, it means that you understand the need to solve problems when studying a physics course at school. Indeed, it is difficult to overestimate the effect that the solution of problems in the study of physics gives. The textbook contains about 800 problems for the high school physics course. The tasks are based on the examination materials of various universities, including the Republic of Crimea, data from the magazines "Kvant", "Physics at School", information received from correspondence physics and mathematics schools of the Moscow State University named after M. V. Lomonosov, National Research Nuclear University "MEPhI", Bauman Moscow State Technical University, Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology (State University). We also used the problem books that were released in various years to help those entering universities. The number of problems and their selection are not random and allow, according to the compilers, to demonstrate the types of problems that are often found in the high school physics course, the most rational methods, general approaches and ideas for solving them, and also help to acquire certain skills in solving problems. Can be useful for use in secondary schools when working with students for whom physics is of interest, optional, if you prepare for the entrance exams for physics, a specialized school with advanced study of physics, as well as anyone who wants to learn how to solve problems in physics.

Abstract:
The Museum of Natural History of the University of Florence, founded in 1775 by Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo d'Asburgo Lorena, is one of the oldest and most prestigious scientific museums in the world. The fourth volume on the Collections of the Mineralogy and Lithology Section, published like the previous volumes by the Firenze University Press, fits perfectly in the series dedicated to the collections of the University's Museum System. The first part of the book describes in great detail the paths that led to the formation of the collections, starting with those dating to the Medici period and arriving at the specimens collected during recent expeditions. The second part illustrates and documents the extraordinary specimens of minerals, hardstone carvings and meteorites which represent the material patrimony of this section. Particular attention is given to the holotypes, the Elban Collection and the minerals of pegmatites, as well as the methods and solutions adopted to realize the project of the new museum exhibition set-up. The third and last part describes the studies carried out on the materials: from the minerals of the systematic collections to the rock specimens that recount not only the geodiversity of a region but also the history of a city.

Abstract:
AbstractIn Chap. 10.1007/978-3-030-28561-6_2, we posed questions about the differences in several national curricula, and some of them were related to the definition of multiplication. In Chap. 10.1007/978-3-030-28561-6_3, several problematics for defining multiplication were discussed, particularly the unique Japanese definition of multiplication, which is called definition of multiplication by measurement. It can be seen as a kind of definition by a group of groups, if we limit it to whole numbers. In Chap. 10.1007/978-3-030-28561-6_4, introduction of multiplication and its extensions in the Japanese curriculum terminology were illustrated to explain how this unique definition is related to further learning. Multiplicand and multiplier are necessary not only for understanding the meaning of multiplication but also for making sense the future learning. The curriculum sequence is established through the extension and integration process in relation to multiplication. In this chapter, two examples of lesson study illustrate how to introduce the definition of multiplication by measurement in a Japanese class. Additionally, how students develop and change their idea of units—that any number can be a unit in multiplication beyond just counting by one—is illustrated by a survey before and after the introduction of multiplication. After the illustration of the Japanese approach, its significance is discussed in comparison with the Chilean curriculum guidebook. Then, the conclusion illustrates the feature of the Japanese approach as being relatively sense making for students who learn mathematics by and for themselves by setting the unit for measurement (McCallum, W. (2018). Making sense of mathematics and making mathematics make sense. Proceedings of ICMI Study 24 School Mathematics Curriculum Reforms: challenges, changes and Opportunities (pp. 1–8). Tsukuba, Japan: University of Tsukuba.). A comparison with Chile is given in order to demonstrate the sense of it from the teacher’s side. In relation to lesson study, this is a good exemplar of how Japanese teachers develop mathematical thinking. It also illustrates the case for being able to see the situation based on the idea of multiplication (Isoda, M. and Katagiri, S. (2012). Mathematical thinking: How to develop it in the classroom. Singapore: World Scientific; Rasmussen and Isoda Research in Mathematics Education 21:43–59, 2019), as seen in Figs. 10.1007/978-3-030-28561-6_4#Fig2 and 10.1007/978-3-030-28561-6_4#Fig3 in Chap. 10.1007/978-3-030-28561-6_4 of this book.

Abstract:
AbstractThe results presented in the preceding sections were primarily aimed at developing a test on professional competence of pre-service teachers specifically for teaching mathematical modelling. In a first step, the theoretical foundations were laid and, based on this, the structure of professional competence used for teaching mathematical modelling was explained. Subsequently, the relevant constructs were operationalised and empirically checked. The results of the analyses presented regarding the test quality are summarised below and are classified in the current state of research to discuss possible explanations for the observed results on this basis. In order to further define the scope of the results, key limits of the test instrument in relation to the present study will be addressed. The book concludes with an outlook, in which possible implications are derived from this study for didactic research as well as for university teacher education.

Abstract:
AbstractA significant effort in theorising and conceptualising the visual has been made within various disciplines. To mention only a few, Howard Becker (Art as collective action. Am Sociol Rev 767–776, 1974) in visual sociology, Lucien Taylor (Visualising theory. Routledge, 1994), Marcus Banks and Howard Morphy ((eds): Rethinking visual anthropology. Yale University Press, London, 1999) and Jay Ruby (Picturing culture: explorations of film and anthropology. University of Chicago Press, Chicago, 2000) in visual anthropology, Chris Jenk ((ed): Visual culture. Routledge, 1995) in cultural studies, Gillian Rose (Visual methodologies: an introduction to the interpretation of visual methods. Sage, 2001) in geography and Sarah Pink (Doing visual ethnography. Sage, London, 2001) in visual ethnography, all produced fundamental works focusing on the visual in social sciences. This book, however, without diminishing the disciplinary work within the subject, proposes to approach visual methodologies in the specific context of a field of study, adopting an interdisciplinary approach that brings together geography, sociology, anthropology and communication studies. As Adrian Favell (Rebooting migration theory: interdisciplinarity, globality and postdisciplinarity in migration studies. In: Brettell C, Hollifield J (eds) Migration theory: talking across disciplines. Routledge, pp 259–278, 2007, p. 1988) has suggested: “On the face of it, there could hardly be a topic in the contemporary social sciences more naturally ripe for interdisciplinary thinking than migration studies.” In this piece we will attempt to explain why the adoption of visual methodologies in the field of migration studies is of particular interest.

Abstract:
About a year ago, I received a copy of a letter that took the editor of the Trinity Reporter, the College’s alumni magazine, to task for publishing a version of some of the previous chapter. An institution like Trinity College, the writer argued, must “unequivocally support the values and institutions of traditional Judeo-Christian culture and western European civilization.” Otherwise the “elitist” and “totalitarian” political agenda, which he believed I was pushing, would triumph, to the ruination of academic freedom, our democratic way of life, and even the cultural diversity I was espousing. It its small way, this letter expressed a set of ideas in a strident tone widely heard in Reaganized America. Its best known cultural representative is, of course, Allan Bloom. Like the letter writer, Bloom sets forth a conservative answer to the questions of the canon—that is, from what tradition, or traditions, do “we, the people” derive? And what should be the canonical texts we ought to study, teach, and pass on to our young people? My letter writer, in brief, and Bloom, in a book of some 400 pages, argue for what they see as the key works of a well-defined Western tradition, from Plato, through St. Paul, to the American Founding Fathers. Others, like those who succeeded in reforming Stanford University’s core humanities sequence in small but significant ways, propose a rather more diverse set of traditions, reaching out beyond the patriarchal or even the Western script. Under this important but seemingly academic question of the canon lurks a more intense conflict. Indeed, the intellectual battle in which my letter writer and Bloom are enlisted has been waged in terms usually reserved for a war of succession. Stanford gets excoriated as a mutinous principality; whereas Columbia, entrenched behind its primigenial curriculum, is lauded for repelling the hordes from outside the Heights. Questions about the adequacy of the Western canon seem to get taken as doubts about the birthright of its defenders. Bloom pitches his book like an Old Testament jeremiad designed through its very denunciatory power to rescue us from imminent barbarism.

Abstract:
The University of Michigan Press, with support from the Mellon Foundation, asked John Lavender, of Lavender Consulting, to conduct a review of the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) Humanities E-Book collection (HEB) following its launch on Michigan’s new Fulcrum platform. ACLS-HEB is an online collection of over 5,400 high-quality humanities books from over 100 publishers. Now that the market for e-books has matured, part of the review was a comparative study of e-book platforms run by publishers, university presses and e-book vendors; 17 platforms were selected. The review looked at the key features offered by each platform, how they handled searching, content delivery, displaying results, ability to view and download and other key features, there was no attempt to judge the value of the content. Following this review, Michigan Press felt that it would be beneficial to share the results with the wider community. As well as being of interest to publishers, the review will also be relevant for librarians making purchasing decisions and vendors selling e-book services. In addition to synthesizing the results of the e-book platform review, this paper presents a librarian’s perspectives on e-book assessment criteria. Courtney McAllister, Electronic Resources Librarian at Yale University’s Law Library, describes the importance of attributes such as accessibility compliance, library branding, and metadata. Library collections are shaped by a plethora of concerns and criteria. This paper seeks to outline some key elements to consider as part of e-book platform decision-making.

Abstract:
This study examined the ethical behaviour of undergraduate students in relation to cyber technology at the University of Zululand (UNIZULU), South Africa, and the Federal University of Agriculture in Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Nigeria. We adopted the pragmatic research paradigm that combines both quantitative and qualitative research methods through the survey method. The sample for the study was drawn from undergraduate students in two purposively selected universities in South Africa and Nigeria. Overall, 450 undergraduate students were invited to participate in the survey; 380 respondents completed and returned the questionnaire, resulting in a response rate of 84.4%. 14 of the expected 16 members of staff of both Information &amp; Communication Technology Resource Centre ICTREC and Information Technology Section ITS were interviewed, resulting in a response rate of 88%. A combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches was used for data analysis. Most of the respondents from the sampled universities reported that they were aware of what constitutes unethical cyber behaviour. Further, the participants (98; 52.1%) revealed that they had never received ethical orientation/training in the university on cyber behaviour, cyber space, or cyber technology. Challenges facing the students is reported. The study recommends that universities should sustain orientation/training programmes on cyber ethics and cyber security awareness at the start of each academic year, especially for newly enrolled students so that they can act responsibly when using the university’s cyberspace. The results of this study may spark further discussions and research on cyber technology access and use in contemporary society.

Abstract:
For many years, librarians and industry experts predicted that electronic books would surpass print books as the format of preference. The advantages that digital books provide seemed to all but guarantee the demise of print. But something happened along the way. Numerous studies during the last decade have demonstrated that print still has a place for libraries, vendors and most importantly, end users. So what’s happened – why hasn’t that time come like it has for journals? And will the “tipping point” for books ever arrive? One explanation is that eBooks have not met user expectations, but optimizing user experience when users range from students, to faculty, to librarians is a big challenge! This session included a lively discussion about the user experience for eBooks from multiple perspectives. Gabrielle Wiersma from the University of Colorado Boulder shared findings from an eBook usability study with students and asked the audience to consider the reasons why people prefer one format over another. Two graduate students shared their perceptions and format preferences and answered questions from the audience. Finally, Leigh Beauchamp, Vice President of Product Development discussed how ProQuest is making patrons the center of Ebook Central platform development and how eBooks are evolving to bring the most important elements of the print experience to digital book research.

Abstract:
Even with the amount of information that is diffused nowadays over the internet it is undeniable that the books in paper format are still a valuable source of knowledge either because they are often a reliable source or because the paper gives us a sensation that a screen does not give. Having said that, it is essential that a library not only publishes on the internet all the available books but also ensures good management for all that knowledge source. That is how this research and project comes up, a compilation of library standards for its management from the cataloguing of the books to its physical display in the library, as well as the automatization of all that standards. This study and the application of its results were done in a small library, Centro de Camões that complements the Department of Humanities of Marie Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin, Poland. It used the Agile software engineering methodology, a light, efficient and low risk way of development. User stories were used as an approach that promotes essentially the user’s point of view in the solution, i.e lead the team to think, question and perceive what they are developing. The main features of the automatization and management system are the cataloging with a book online search script by ISBN that returns the vital intel of a book, a website that shares with the users all the bibliography available and a books manager, also includes a requisitions manager that allows warnings to the library and users. The framework used was Django, a high-level Python Web framework. On it, we apply technologies like channels, Web sockets and all the fundamental guidelines of Web development. Therefore, this article is a jump start for those who want either implement a similar solution in a library or want to apply some technologies used on this project on their own projects, the source code of this project can be found at https://github.com/tfcl/camoes.

Abstract:
Learning and teaching procedures need to evolve, regarding the high technological profile most students have. The Teacher might consider that in some cases, outdated teaching methods create barriers for students who are used to interaction with modern technological gadgets and computers. Augmented Reality technology emerges as a great potential tool in the teaching environment. Augmented reality (AR) is a cost-effective technology which has the ability to coexist with paper books supplying students with more attractive and didactic contents meaning rebirth of classic textbooks. In this work we present the developed didactic material supported by AR technology for learning sketching, designation and rules of standard mechanical elements. This book has been included in the curriculum of engineering graphics subject of the Mechanical Engineering Degree in a Spanish University for performing a pilot study seeking comparison of academic performance acquired and motivation for study between two groups of students. Abstract:
At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, in 2016, the concept of the 4th Industrial revolution (4IR) was coined by Klaus Schwab, Founder and Executive Chairman of the World Economic Forum, with the reference that it would be building on «the Third, the digital revolution» and would be «characterized by a fusion of technologies that is blurring the lines between the physical, digital, and biological». Thus, the ‘smart’ technologies will spearhead the revolution. We acknowledge that the 4IR will impact on everything, everywhere, including research and libraries. In this paper we conceptualize 4IR, and compare current academic/university library services/trends in South Africa with 4IR requirements through the analysis of 26 public university library websites. The findings show that the libraries are responding well to the revolution through their services, with remarkable of innovation and creativity on display. The study expects library services to be responsive, resourced and accessible anytime and anywhere, and provides a framework for further research and exploration in the region and perhaps elsewhere.

Comprehension of academic literature is a key element in the immersion of university students in the academic subcultures of each discipline (Chanock, 2001; Estienne &amp;amp; Carlino, 2004; Gottschalk &amp;amp; Hjortshoj, 2004). To do so, universities opt for the implementation of text discussion such as book clubs (Hartley, 2002; Long, 2003), dialogic literary gatherings (Flecha, 2000; Mirceva &amp;amp; Larena, 2010). or literary circles (Daniels, 2002; Duncan, 2012).This case study, essentially qualitative, seeks to know the impact of text discussions on the professional identity of the students of Teacher Education and Computer Science at the University of Andorra (UdA). Results are obtained by student focus groups, the Likert test Motivational Survey on Academic Reading, teacher interviews and taking notes in situ throughout the discussions. The main results indicate that the text discussions have a positive impact on students as (1) it increases the reflection, understanding and critique of the professional world, (2) they apply evidence-based content in professional contexts and (3) it improves the justification of informed professional decisions.
