Lothringer, Peter Alan 1958. "Origin Unknown." Diss., The University of Arizona, 1997. http://hdl.handle.net/10150/298724.

Abstract:
Origin Unknown is a 15-minute, single-movement work for orchestra. The piece maintains an understated, meditative quality throughout, and adheres to the principle of perpetual variation of a very limited amount of material. The form of the work is process-oriented: the music unfolds slowly, according to a consistent, yet flexible, dialectic. Two basic materials—one that is tonally stable, and another that modulates—alternate throughout the piece and form a harmonic backdrop. A type of respiration occurs, as the lengths of the stable sections expand and contract, while the modulatory passages g

Abstract:
Dynamic Visual Acuity (DVA) refers to an observer's ability to resolve a critical detail in a visual target under conditions of relative motion between an observer and a target. DVA research has conventionally used visual targets originating from a single fixation point and moving in a predictable linear path. These procedures (dictated by apparatus constraints), ensured observers knew when and from where targets would appear. Shevlin, Prestrude, and Shevlin (1997) examined DVA using computer-generated targets presented from fixed (left to right) and random (six possible) origins. As hypo

Viral metagenomics of feces collected from 58 Peruvian children with unexplained diarrhea revealed several small circular ssDNA genomes. Two genomes related to sequences previously reported in feces from chimpanzees and other mammals and recently named smacoviruses were characterized and then detected by PCR in 1.7 % (1/58) and 19 % (11/58) of diarrheal samples, respectively. Another three genomes from a distinct small circular ssDNA viral group provisionally called pecoviruses encoded Cap and Rep proteins with <35 % identity to those in related genomes reported in human, seal, porcine and dro

The monograph is devoted to the literary and scientific heritage of the famous French writer, historian, philosopher, thinker, diplomat and statesman F. R. de Chateaubriand, whose scientific works were practically unknown to the Russian reader for many decades. Being the founder of French romanticism and laying the main elements of this direction of culture, F. R. de Chateaubriand nevertheless causes numerous disputes and questions. The monograph shows the process of formation of the writer's romantic worldview on the example of his early works, which still retain traces of the literature of t
