Japan created ‘the PKO Law’ in 1992 to provide a legal framework for international peacekeeping activities, following its financial involvement in the Gulf War of 1991. This paper argues that the PKO Law imposed certain restrictions which complicated the missions of the Japanese Self Defence Forces (SDF) and civilian personnel in operational fields. Post 11 September (2001), the Japanese government created a new legal framework for counter-terrorism and dispatched its SDF personnel to the United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) and the United Nations Mission of Suppor

AbstractMeat quality was studied in pigs reared in groups kept as units during the fattening period and slaughter (unmixed). The results were compared with conventionally reared pigs, which were mixed during the fattening period, at transport to the abattoir and at lairage (mixed). It is concluded that the unmixed pigs in this study had a better meat quality measured as pH,, pHu, weight loss and also fewer skin lacerations compared with the mixed groups (i.e. less development of pale, soft exudative (PSE) and dark, firm dry (DFD) in the unmixed animals). I re-examine the starting point of the Philebus’ description of the ‘divine method’ and argue that the vexed phrase τῶν ἀεὶ λεγομένων εἶναι at 16c9 refers to sensibles only. In doing so, I especially stress the significance of the phrase τούτων οὕτω διακεκοσμημένων at 16d1. The proposed interpretation fits the rest of the description of the ‘divine method’, preserves the Forms’ unmixed nature and the consistency of the Philebus.

An evaluation of the geochemistry of the environment prior to large-scale changes enables scientists and other stakeholders to assess both baseline conditions and the potential impact of those changes to the environment. One area in which documentation of pre-development geochemistry is particularly important is in the exploitation of ore deposits. Ore deposits consist of concentrations of elements or minerals that are enriched enough to be of potential economic value. Their unusual geochemistry often leaves a signature on the environment that can both aid in location an economic resource and

Abstract:
Abstract Guidelines for optimizing the corrosion resistance of welded stainless steel structures are presented along with illustrative case histories of actual problems. Field experiences with weldment corrosion are related to metallurgical factors such as secondary phase precipitation, heat-tint oxides, unmixed zones, and weld metal dilution and microsegregation. Solutions to these problems include balancing alloy compositions, using over-alloyed filler metals, proper gas-shielding, controlling the heat input and throughly mixing weld with base metals, and grinding followed by acid cleaning.

Autogenous fusion weldments have corrosion resistance below that of the parent, but low arc energy, high travel speed and use of N2- bearing shielding gas are recommended for best properties.
